She can’t pinpoint exactly when her feelings towards Steve began to evolve again. Maybe back when he’d saved her at the mall. Maybe when he’d risked his life time and time again for the kids. Maybe when he’d shown up after Fred’s death, his face her only reprieve from a waking nightmare; or perhaps when he’d been calling her name, desperately trying to wake her from Henry’s trance. 

Or maybe, she thinks, the feelings never truly left at all.

Trauma has a way of bonding people — sometimes to their detriment — and it’s one of the many reasons why Nancy’s purposefully remained single after her and Steve’s alcohol-fueled breakup years ago. 

—but it’s different with him, isn’t it? They’d liked each other before all of this crazy bullshit had showed itself to them. Surely that had to mean something, right?

     Nance. I miss you.

It’s a brisk October night, yet after Steve’s confession, Nancy feels anything but chilly. Warmth like she’s never known it pools in her gut; and with crimson painted cheeks, she finally allows herself to let the worries go. 

Just for a moment. Let me just have a moment. 

All thoughts of the Upside Down, of Max, of Henry, of the impending danger they’re all facing — all of it is released with a soft, tiny exhale against Steve’s mouth. Already are her arms shifting to wrap around him, the embrace one she desperately wants to hold onto. ❝ Steve. ❞ It’s said against his mouth, for she’s only pulled her face back just enough to take a breath. ❝ I’ve missed you, too. ❞ 

There’s moisture in her eyes, Nancy’s glassy blue gaze focused entirely on the man in front of her. They’d needed to break it off back then — for they both had learning to do, growing to do; but now?

She can’t think of anywhere else she’d rather be.  It terrifies her more than any monster ever could.

❝ You know, I kind of thought you’d call me out on that, what with me jumping in the lake after you. ❞ It’s said with a breathless little laugh, her mouth curled upwards with endless affection. Of course they both know she’d have jumped in for anyone — but Steve is one of the people who knows her best in this world; has known who she was before all of this tragedy, and how these disasters have made her slightly reckless. 

Especially when it comes to those she loves.

❝ I’m so scared, ❞ she admits, and by god is it difficult to say. Her chest burns with the weight of the world, and only as Nancy’s forehead touches Steve’s again does it feel slightly eased. ❝ I’m so scared of not being able to keep everyone safe, and I just — I just, god, you need to be okay. ❞

With a press of her mouth to his, she’s finally kissing him again — and it’s Nancy who's initiated this time, some of her fingers curled delicately into the other’s hair. ❝ Tell me you’ll be safe. Promise me, Steve. No matter what, I need you to be okay. ❞

THE MANY MEANINGS OF "HEY.": A PROMPT LIST.

i often have these ideas that have no real origin, but i can actually tell you precisely why my brain wanted this: i was listening to "hey, soul sister" by train on a loop and i got thinking abt the fact that we really do just say "hey" for so many reasons. and i wanted to make that your thought of the evening! so happy november, bon appetit, wrap up warm, DO NOT ADD TO THIS LIST, and enjoy your writings!

[ GREETING ]: sender says "hey" as a greeting to the receiver.

[ ATTENTION ]: sender, having just noticed something strange or remarkable, calls for the receiver to get their attention.

[ REASSURE ]: in a bid to steady the unsettled receiver, the sender lightly says "hey" to help them calm down.

[ ANGER ]: the sender sharply snaps "hey" at the receiver, clearly angry about something the receiver has just done or had done in the past.

[ IDEA ]: having been presented with a predicament, the sender suddenly unravels a solution, introducing it to the receiver by saying "hey…".

[ GUILT ]: having just done something that they know the receiver won't be pleased with, the sender sheepishly greets them once they arrive to see the damage.

[ GOSSIP ]: the sender turns to face the receiver conspiratorially, clearly eager to share some new gossip with them.

[ BREATHLESS ]: having clearly just sprinted down to the receiver, the sender tries to catch their breath while greeting them.

[ SAVE ]: after just saving the receiver's life in a very heroic fashion, the sender smoothly greets them while helping them escape.

[ FLIRT ]: the sender meets the receiver in a social setting, and attempts to flirt with them with the very traditional pick-up line: "hey.".

[ APOLOGY ]: the sender, having recently done something that hurt or upset the receiver, reunites with them and addresses the elephant in the room by greeting them with a sincerely apologetic tone.

[ AWKWARD ]: after a particularly rough first encounter, the sender meets the receiver again, and awkwardly greets them with more than a touch of embarrassment.

[ GENTLE ]: having found the receiver in an emotionally compromised position, the sender closes the door and approaches them carefully, gently saying "hey…" to try and get them to communicate what has upset them.

[ HARD ]: preparing to deliver what they both know will be bad news, the sender tries to prepare the receiver by quietly greeting them in a solemn tone.

October is always a welcome reprieve from the tragic tribulations of September. While every year has certainly gotten easier, the passage of time an aid in Henry's struggles, Nancy can't help the relief October's cooler breeze carries. Yet this isn't the only reason the month is cherished; not only does it contain Henry's favorite holiday (as well as one she now adores, all thanks to him) it also contains one of Nancy's favorite days of the year.

His birthday.

While Henry worked, Nancy remained upstairs, their Halloween decorations now riddled with small, tasteful nods to her husband's birthday. And the centerpiece of this celebration? A spider-riddled cake she'd baked and decorated on her own, topped with a headstone and a small black cat. It'd taken hours of work and quite a few lessons from Karen, but she's happy with the result, the final touch of crushed Oreo cookies finally added to mark the grave's freshly disturbed dirt. With webbing made of icing, fake spiders, and a killer flavor combination of chocolate and banana crème, she's hopeful he'll like it — and the homemade ravioli she'd cooked for their dinner.

Some may think the macabre theming off-putting, but Nancy knows Henry — knows he'll understand the references and appreciate the effort even while he insists he isn't worth the trouble.

It isn't any trouble, but even if it was, no one is more worth it than him.

With their dinner table set, the ravioli plated, and his gifts set beside the cake, all that's left to do is light a few candles and wait for him to come upstairs; and thanks to the way she'd timed this out, that particular thing doesn't take long.

The sound of the door opening sees her grinning, Nancy's lacy, red, off-the-shoulder dress adjusted hastily. It's funny — they've been together so long, and yet she still wants to look good for him.

Especially on special occasions.

❝ Why would you think that, Two? I don't spend time with anyone who revolts me, and I certainly wouldn't be going out of my way to help them. ❞ Sure, she'd not turn a blind eye to someone truly in need of assistance, but befriending a true revolting asshole (like Carol or Tommy)? Absolutely not. 

❝ I know you get too angry sometimes, but you've been working on it. You're doing well.  Being angry doesn't make you revolting or someone worth avoiding. We just...have to find healthier ways for you to let it out, don't we? ❞ Nancy has no doubt that May's already been working with Two on this particular issue. Yet it's not something that goes away overnight; years of trauma manifest for different people in various ways. For Henry, he shuts down — hides his emotions and swallows them until they finally erupt with volcanic ferocity, sometimes resulting in days in bed or nights tearing apart forests. For Two, he seems to let every discomfort out immediately — even if the target of his anger or upset is nowhere in sight. 

They could both use a sort of medium, really.

After everything that's happened, Nancy can't deny the growth of Steve Harrington. The man who sits beside her now reminds her of the man she'd initially thought he was — who she hoped he could be — before his disregard for Barb's death had ultimately forced her hand. It'd been a painful experience to feel so alone; yet she'd ultimately carried on — had to, because if she hadn't sought out justice for Barbara's death, who would have? 

Her research had proven successful in the end, though the complete story of the Upside Down, the Creel tragedy, and Brenner's corruption was far more complex than any of them bargained for. To be left with a deteriorating Hawkins has the very core of Nancy's soul feeling frigid; and this is something Steve must know, because his jacket is soon draped gently over her shoulders. 

It's such a simple gesture, yet it means the world to Nancy; for it isn't only his jacket that has her feeling warmer. 

❝ Thank you. ❞ Blue eyes flit from the darkening sky to his face, Nancy's shaking fingers tight in the material of Steve's coat. ❝ It's just — this is a lot, isn't it? And I don't know where we all go from here. ❞ She's always done her best to be the leader of the group; to assure each of them into safety, into a future, but now? Max is in the hospital. Eddie and others are dead. Another realm is leaking into their own, monsters and horrors controlled by man desperate for revenge and stronger than all of them out for blood.

How exactly is she meant to fix this?

( It's been months since their standoff with Vecna Henry, and still Nancy hasn't figured it out. )

❝ You know, I keep telling the kids it'll be alright. That we'll get through this, that everything is going to be fine. But I don't know if it will be, Steve, and I feel....horrible, for all of it. October air usually brings with it a sense of spooky joy, but it's harder to let go this year — harder to look past her failures and allow herself to have some much-needed fun.

okay so i got like, three books delivered this week, and in anticipation i reread another book that i had, and lads, let me tell ye, it was like quicksand. so now i have a list, some from my head, many from my wonderful friends’ heads, of prompts that basically made us all very soft or very “pleasantly scandalized rich lady from the sixties who just found out a juicy bit of goss about the new neighbor”. i hope ye like them! (DO NOT ADD TO THE LIST. I WILL MAKE A PART TWO. AND THREE. AND FOUR. MANY MANY PARTS. EVENTUALLY. )

[ HAIR ]:          sender slowly reaches out to catch a loose strand of the receiver’s hair and tuck it gently and securely back behind their ear, letting their touch linger afterwards. (if the receiver has short hair, then the sender reaches out and gently runs their fingers through their hair to smooth it back.)

[ CLOSE ]:          while standing remarkably close to one another, the sender is unable to stop themselves from running their gaze across the receiver’s body, lingering for a moment on their lips, before returning to initiate prolonged, intense eye contact.

[ CHIN ]:          as they stand close to one another, the sender hooks a finger and tenderly lifts the receiver’s chin, tilting it up so that they can look at one another, and running a thumb across their skin lightly.

[ THUMB ]:          while cupping the receiver’s cheek in their hand, the sender slowly glides their thumb across their cheekbone in a tender, sweeping caress.

[ WOUND ]:          upon noticing a recent injury on the receiver’s person, the sender carefully moves closer, running a thumb (or hand) across the wound in a gentle, troubled manner.
