on trust, being a creative, and fan support
from what i can tell, the reality is that steven, ryan, and shane make content (primarily) for themselves. they make content they want to make. they're trying to make content they're really proud of and excited for. any creator/artist can tell you that being excited for your own work and being the #1 cheerleader of your work is the main driving force that 1) gets work done and 2) makes the art good. for a creative, passion is hugely important. and it is a very good thing that the boys are compelled to want to up the quality and production of their shows, because that means there's a passion there that they're trying to nurse.
now, if the content they want to make requires more money, they're allowed to ask for more money. even though success in their line of work requires views and a certain level of fan support, they're allowed to act for themselves and their own creations. they're allowed to advocate for the art they want to make, art that maybe the fans aren't asking for. yes, it does shatter the misconception that they're doing all this exclusively for the fans. but it shouldn't be viewed as a breach of trust for them to simply ask that of their fans. and imo it shouldn't even be that surprising since that's the main reason they left buzzfeed in the first place—feeling creatively stifled, and feeling like they could make things they're really passionate about, if only they could make the space for themselves.
i think with all that in mind, i would say a lot of the common arguments against the move are essentially rendered void and misplaced. in the end, if someone really hated the move and felt betrayed, they could've just packed up shop and stopped watching; a lot of people did not do that, and i think their inability to cut ties with something they didn't like and was generally harmless was a fault of their own. BUT the only argument that might still stand is this: the bottom line is that if watcher won't listen to what the fans want, watcher won't last.
you're right! they won't. that's probably why they backtracked on the move.
but then i ask you what you truly want as a fan. the main "want" i've heard from people is for watcher to cut down on production/quality, and just focus on the real magic, that is the humor and chemistry between our watcher boys.
but what if watcher knows this and they still decide that they want something else? again, what if watcher wants to focus on creating something larger than two guys cracking jokes on a crappy handheld camera? if they only ever followed the fans' desires over their own, and all their videos from now on was just them shooting the shit on camera, maybe that would be just fine for you! maybe you'd love that content! but would you really be supporting watcher in the end, or would you just be supporting the versions of themselves they molded for you? could you really be a fan of theirs if you denied them the mere attempt at becoming the creatives they truly wanted to be? is getting exactly what you want all the time worth making life shittier and more stifling for the people giving it to you? is that what you wanted when you first followed watcher from buzzfeed?

“So you forgive them, just like that?”
i’ve never felt that it was a matter of forgiveness, more of if you accept to continue watching the content and creators even if you disagreed strongly with a business move and they way they presented it. if you can move past it. forgiveness would be more personal, and imply a relationship.. which isn’t the case. i think shane and ryan are great content creators, and i find their content very entertaining, they’ve taken accountability and changed the issues i had with the streamer. why wouldn’t i come back?
“they’re still money hungry, they revealed their true colors!”
they’re a business, and they have 25 employees that rely on them. of course they’re looking for profit, and expand the business. that’s what businesses do

Was reading comments on instagram. And the stark difference between the comments under Steven’s and Shane and Ryan’s posts is crazy. The way people are putting ALL the blame on Steven and babying Ryan and Shane is mindblowing. They might not be the CEOs but they are cofounders of the company. Ain’t no way they didn’t have ANY say in the matter and it’s 100% Steven’s decision.
“Is Steven holding you guys hostage?” “We will support you if you(Ryan) and Shane go off and do something of your own” “this isn’t you” etc
At the end of the day Shane and Ryan are strangers to us, what we see and know about them is what they want us to see. Get a grip and realise that, thanks.

no amount of friends at 25 will fill the empty seats at the lunch tables of your past / and all of my enemies started out friends / a friend to all is a friend to none / ‘cause my friends found friends who care / no one wanted to play with me as a little kid / i’m alone on my own and that’s all i know / you’re on your own kid you always have been

I am a nostalgic person. Through and through. The bittersweet taste of memories tinted by people long forgotten on the cobblestone pathways of my life pleases me more than living in the moment ever could. Maybe that is why I have difficulty in letting go of things. I still have my little friendship bands from 1st grade saved in a box, their ends fraying, all matted and tangled with each other, almost like the memories themselves. I don't particularly remember who gave me which piece of the ribbon, but I remember the love and care that went in buying the rolls of coloured ribbons together, measuring them out and cutting them to the lengths of our little wrists. We exchanged them like they were something much more precious than mere pieces of ribbon waiting to disintegrate into the lengths of threads that made them and, they were. They were precious enough to be stored in a box still, even when I haven't known the whereabouts of the people who bestowed them upon me in years. They are now just memories, covered by the rose-coloured filter of nostalgia. Maybe I hold on to such tchotchkes because of my incapacity to hold on to people. The friendship bands, the greeting cards, the wrapping papers, the chocolate wrappers, the little bayblades, the empty pen cases, the little rocks, the stone less ring, the dandiya sticks, the slam books, the diaries, the chits passed around in class, the "song book", the stupid photo frame and the weird hats, the receipts from all cafe visits, the tabs from cans and the labels from bottles, the photographs and the screenshots of chats I still can't seem to delete- laid out in multiple nooks and crannies of my life- exist to remind me of the relationships I couldn't preserve. Nostalgia rots all senses with it's cloying sweetness, suffocating oneself with thoughts that turn to 'these people left because I couldn't hold them tight enough, for long enough or with enough adoration and appreciation'. Maybe such is the folly of a person who lives with nostalgia. The hues of nostalgia blurs the pain of separation, masks the rationale behind why one had to remove oneself from someone or something they loved. All thats left behind is pink skies and a portrait of happiness. Why wouldn't it be addictive? To vie for something familiar, something beautiful, just devoid of all the hurt and the ugly! So yes I am a nostalgic person.
