If the Upside Down is stuck in 1983, why are the decorations from the Snow Ball there? The gym should look exactly like it did the day Will went missing. I think it has something to do with Max entering her memories and the Upside Down being Will's mind.
Tumblr media
Once Vecna found Max in her Snow Ball memory, it started being infested with spores and the wood began to rot. It started to look like the UD. The memory now exists within the UD.
So how does this relate to the UD being Will's mind? So I think Will's mind is in a memory-like state just like Max's mind was when she entered her memory. It took a snapshot in time. Max left a piece of her memory within her other memories with the Snow Ball table at the skate park. If Vecna is piggybacking through Will's mind, he's bringing Will's UD "memory" with him, leaving spores in his trail.
If Will's memory could leave a mark in Max's memory, then we can assume that her memory also left a mark in his when they started to combine. The Snow Ball decorations transferred to the UD to represent this. So Max's and Will's minds are connecting through Vecna's piggyback and this left marks in each other's memories.
But that doesn't explain why the decorations appeared years ago. If the UD really is stuck in a piece of time, if it gets altered in the "future," it will also be altered in the past. This is why the Snow Ball would replicate Max's memory despite her not entering it until two years later. It works like a time paradox.

Can Vecna… see into the future?
When he does the gate vision with Nancy, he shows the Creel house gate opening. How did he know the last kill would happen in the attic? This was before Max came up with the plan to bait him, so he didn’t read her mind. And he didn’t plan it because Max was supposed to die at the cemetery (supposedly). He just knew. How? He could’ve killed anyone anywhere to open that last one.
His whole deal with time must include him seeing into the future. There’s no other explanation.
Side note: I wonder why we didn’t get a visual of the Wheelers “dying” (tbh I don’t think they died bc Nancy didn’t finish her sentence) during this sequence. Maybe because it won’t come true like the gates did? Or maybe I’m right and it isn’t death, but something else that would be spoiled with a visual and it will come true. Flaying? Intense injuries? Something new that Nancy couldn’t quite describe?

When the rest of the world looks at the united states right now, we see a government who sends billions to support genocide but cannot help their own people starving on the streets.
We see a police force who won't go in to save children from school shootings, but deploy at a rapid rate to arrest peaceful protestors using their right to free speech to protest a genocide
America, you are a war mongering snake eating your own tail. You will protect and support war criminals in another country but let your own people starve and die
To the students bravely protesting now, we see your strength. We see what we saw when students protested the Vietnam War. We have faith you will prevail

I was looking back at bts pics Ross shared and this Nancy Drew book… a missing will in a clock? This is obviously referring to a will as in a document leaving their belongings. BUT what if they referenced this book as a play on words and it’s a missing WILL! Byers!
Maybe hinting at Will’s disappearance having something to do with the time travel clock stuff? OR information is hidden INSIDE of Vecna’s clock that they need to unlock. Maybe that’s how they find about his past? Documents of the lab’s agreements with Henry’s parents? That’s why he’s obsessed with the clock and his mindscape is stuck in that house… he wants them to find out the truth.

Thoughts on "Escape from Camazotz"
Oppressive Suburbia, Conformity, and Season 5 Themes
Tumblr media
I've long thought that a major focus of Season 5 will be the contrast between the families of The Wheelers and The Byers, and exploring how non-traditional family environments can be freeing vs the oppressive structure of the nuclear family.
In a Wrinkle In Time, Camazotz is a planet controlled by the big bad of the book, the "IT", who forces the citizens into a conformity that resembles American suburbia. All of the houses the same, the citizens the same, doing the same things at the same time without individual identity. Without anything different. Different means a lot of things, but with Stranger Things dropping different in reference to Will's identity and the presumable themes of this season, it will heavily codify as queerness and how it threatens the cisheterosexual family model.
Tumblr media
Henry was raised in the 1950s, a decade still revered by conservatives for it's traditional family dynamics that supposedly were the peak of culture and happiness for all. That was all a lie, of course, and Henry knew so as he shows to Nancy and Eleven during his monologue. The second most conservative decade aside from the 1950s in American society is widely considered to be the 1980s.
The Creels will serve in parallel to The Wheelers; the worst example of what they could become and the damage that this type of family could do to a child that is different in any way. Notice how Vecna selectively shows Nancy visions of The Wheelers dying, but not anyone else she may consider family or friends (like Jonathan).
That is; unless they change their ways and come together as a healthy functioning family facing their traumas, The Wheelers will be toast.
Karen has been moved up to a main character role this season. Ted's actor says the father starts to show up more for Holly (hold that) and realizes he wants to act differently. Holly has been recast. Finn has said Mike goes on a much more personal journey this season, and steps up as a leader.
Oh, also: the catalyst for all of this is that Holly goes missing. The contrast will help show how the Byers (including El and Hopper here) were able to pull together and help solve Will's disappearance, versus how the Wheelers as a closed off nuclear family grapple with Holly's vanishing.
Tumblr media
Each of the Byers is in some kind of a non-1950s conformist relationship, but particularly Will (not in one now but we all know he will be). I think El might represent, after she breaks up with Mike, the fear of the unmarried woman being satisfied without a husband. The above shot really emphasizes my point.
I predict that Will will end up coming out to his family rather early on, and we will see all of them immediately accept him with little surprise or push-back. Will is a visible gay man who comes from an open minded non traditional family (divorced, non-married, adoptive) that is willing to have honest conversations.
But this theme will place the most focus on the Wheelers. Mike is the main character of said family and this will particularly focus on his arc, and his acceptance of his queerness in the midst of suburban conformity.
He is not visible, he comes from a Reagan-supporting family who don't communicate with each other. He is not particularly close with his family like Will is. He pushes his feelings down and tries his damn hardest to be normal despite it all. His trauma hasn't really been addressed at all. He is falling back into his usual habits - the one thing he dared to do different (grow his hair long) has gone back to how it was.
It's not all doom and gloom though. This season above all will be a redemption arc of the American nuclear family, how they choose to escape their conformity and learn to be there for each other, thus overpowering Vecna. Not that the Wheelers are going to end this personally.

"Great, more hysteria. Just what we need". "It's the news, now indistinguishable from the tabloids".

‘shock jock’ is a radio broadcaster or DJ who uses controversial and offensive statements to keep viewers. so it seems that episode 5 will be related to the radio station and maybe even deal with the ignorance of Hawkins?
or maybe it’s a play on words dealing with electricity at the radio station?

I feel like it’s most likely going to be Holly who disappears. She almost got taken by the demogorgon in s1, Vecna’s vision of Holly dying (?), and she’s framed with as much significance at the end of s4 as the other mains. She also saw El walking around in s1 and overheard the Vecna convo in s4 so she kind of already knows things (she doesn’t know what it means but she’s heard of it before). It would be an easy way to get Karen and Ted to find out about everything.
Mike is likely too but I think we saw him filming ep 3 so idk. I can’t see Nancy or Ted going missing… Karen maybe? Holly just makes the most sense to me.

You talk about when Mike got caught looking at Will in the desert. I talk about when he didn't.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is before Will started talking, he was just gesturing in reaction while Jonathan and Argyle were talking one on one. But I'm rewatching the scene thinking about Mike and there is a lot of time between the inciting moment of Argyle saying they're gonna kill El and the triple take at the end of this scene. He had a full soliloquy alone, that triple take was not an immediate reaction and I think we forget that. He had been sitting with himself in silence, tuning them out for 0:56 seconds before that triple take. He isn't listening to them. He's thinking. And while he's thinking, he looks over at Will 0:12 seconds before we see him do it up close.
As I say, he's surprised he got caught because he usually doesn't. He wasn't expecting Will to be looking at him because he wasn't when he tried 10 seconds prior.

no but. THIS is why lucas is so good for max. because instead of blaming her for being upset, or treating her badly, he approaches his parents (a happily married couple) and asks honestly how to handle the situation. because he is so earnest and good and he wants to show max she can trust him. lucas is a goddamn king and we don't talk about it enough
