funniest thing about getting my friend to finally watch black sails is how every other episode shes been asking me why i never made her watch it before, even though i have, on multiple occasion, attempted to do exactly that, including but not limited to putting on the first episode on her own tv at her place of residence. anyway im so glad they put it on netflix so more people can experience it

finished Line and Orbit by sunny moraine and lisa soem, and it was kind of really fucking good. very plot heavy, dealing with eugenics and genetic disease and a conflict between heavily modified ('perfected') humans, and those who split off long ago to keep their cultures and 'messy' humanity. i found it to be very impactful through its level of violence and heart. and its deeply struggling characters.

the only weak points were one or two chapters in the middle that didn't hold up as well to the others, and the fact that the few typos it has are pretty severe (missing and misplaced words). but the story and writing beyond that are solid. many quotes stood out to me as just genuinely good writing - everything from memorable descriptions, compelling emotions, and thoughtful dialogue.

regarding the romance, i think the description is a little misleading because our main leads spend most of the book disliking each other, and later dancing around the very concept of love. but i found that to be more interesting than a typical romance anyway and really enjoyed seeing them gravitate (!) toward each other in a different way. it's also really great to see a genuine gay relationship with racial diversity where the black character's culture and identity and background is a massive part of the story. especially in the context of scifi where most stories tend to 'move beyond the need' from where we as humans came from. especially when the story presses directly on that point at its core.

i also really appreciated how even though the trans male character wasn't a POV character, he still had a huge presence and impact on the main characters, and that he was portrayed as being much more than his transness while still letting his transness have its place in the story.

overall i really enjoyed this and will be checking out the rest of the series. and since this first book isn't available through any official means, here's a download so you can read it too.

been rewatching black sails with my friend (its her first time) and ive been getting teary eyed and going into hysterics at all the expected scenes but i did not expect to nearly start bawling while seeing silver handle randal's peg leg and knee brace and trying to get him to wear them while being his caretaker on the ship in season 1 like just drag me across the barnacles under a burning sun, that would hurt less
