Bucky, heir to the Scottish Duke of Buchanan, is betrothed to Tony, the son of a wealthy English industrialist. Despite tension between their countries, the boys are instantly taken with one another, and strike up a fond friendship and lively correspondence. They’re only able to meet in person a handful of times, but both are eagerly looking forward to the day when Tony is old enough to wed and can make the journey north to join his husband-to-be at Castle Buchanan.
Which makes it all the more upsetting when Tony turns seventeen and Bucky doesn’t send for him, and Tony’s letters go unanswered. Tony is left to wait, alone, and wonder what’s become of his betrothed.
Imprisoned by Hydra, a band of Scottish rebels, Bucky’s every breath is a struggle for mere survival. It’s a good thing Tony’s there to help him through.

After HYDRA, Bucky's Sentinel gifts are out of control, and nothing appears capable of helping. He keeps falling into Zones, but none of the Guides that SHIELD continues bringing in are able to form even a superficial bond with him, instead ending up breaking down themselves. The only Guide capable of being around him for longer periods of time is Tony, and Bucky can't help but want, even though he knows an attempt at a bond won't end in anything but pain for the both of them. So he'll keep his distance, no matter how much he wants to get closer.
Tony, in the meantime, longs. But he knows he's no good as a Guide, knows that Bucky deserves so much more than him. So he'll stay away, even when all he wants is to get closer.

“What’s wrong?” Bucky asks, propping himself up on one hand, and gently rolling Tony onto his back with the other. “Are you hurt?”
Tony looks soft and sleep-rumpled, mostly, and maybe a little paler than normal, though it’s difficult to tell in the dim light. Bucky brushes his hair back, then presses the back of his hand against Tony’s forehead. “It’s not time for your heat yet. Is it? You feelin’ sick?”
“Not really,” Tony says, and takes Bucky’s hand, moving it to lie just below his belly button. “It’s just my stomach, feels kind of bloated.” He grins, tongue-in-cheek. “Probably from Clint’s chili last night.”
Or; Tony has a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week. But at least it ends with a happy surprise.

The Asset eyed the Mechanic. The Mechanic was glassy-eyed and unresponsive.
He’d probably be dead in a week.
