End of Beginning
~End of Beginning by Djo~
Author's Note: requested :) Summary: Luke's last day as a rookie Warnings: None! Word Count: 1,569 Luke Hughes x fm!reader
Tumblr media
He was lying on the couch, asleep holding a pillow to his chest. A snore came out of his throat every so often. She would roll her eyes every time the sound left his body. It was something that she has gotten used to over the season.
He said he would sleep too well if he napped in their bedroom, so for two hours every game day she would have to tip-toe around the apartment to let him sleep. She walked into the bathroom to start getting ready herself for the last game of the season.
After another twenty minutes she was just about to finish her shower when Luke stumbled into the bathroom sleepily. She turned her head and watched her reach his hands above his head, he rested them onto the door frame.
He leaned forward stretching his arms, “Hey baby,” he yawned out. He stumbled further into the bathroom, rubbing his hand across his chin. “Are you almost done?” he asked shyly.
She nodded, “You wanna just join me?” she asked, raising her eyebrows as she added conditioner to her hand.
“Any other day of the week I would say yes but right now I’m running late and I gotta drive myself again,” he mumbled as he tilted his head to the side. She nodded and smiled towards him as she began rubbing conditioner to her hair.
“Give me five minutes, my love,” she mumbled and he nodded, wandering out of the bathroom. She quickly finished her shower, to be able to let him continue his game day routine; uninterrupted.
She stepped out of the shower, wrapping her body in a towel as she walked into the bedroom, “Luke? You can shower now,” she mumbled as she walked towards the closet. She scrunched her features as she watched him stare towards the six suits he had in his closet. “What are you doing?” she asked in a soft voice. He rested his hands on his hips as he looked towards his suits.
“I don’t know which one to wear,” he muttered, shifting his gaze back and forth from the line of suits. She watched his back muscles, tense as he tilted his head back. She tightened her grip around her towel as she used her other hand and rested it onto his back. He spun around and met her gaze. “I mean it’s my last game, its gotta be good,”
She switched her gaze back to the suits, all of which he’s worn all year long, “Well, my love, you’ve worn all of them already,” she said, confusion written all over her features. He nodded dramatically, he pulled his lips between his teeth.
“You’re right,” He muttered as he moved past her, delicately holding her arm in place as he moved towards their bathroom. She stood still for a moment before she took a few steps towards her side of the closet to find herself an outfit.
She took a red long sleeve with a turtle neck from the hanger and a pair of black leather pants and wandered towards their bed. She placed the outfit onto the bed, before she wandered towards the bathroom to start getting ready. She glanced towards the shower, watching him face towards the shower head. Letting the water cascaded over his curls.
She took a deep breath as she took the towel off of her body, and took a hold of her robe and covered her frame. She began drying her hair.
For the next twenty minutes it was quiet. After she dried her hair she walked into the bedroom to see Luke staring towards his suits again, this time his frame only covered by a towel around his waist.
He kept his gaze on the suits, his eyes lingering on the dark blue suit, it was one of his favorites. “Luke?” she questioned as she leaned her head against the doorway. He turned his head around, meeting her gaze. He smiled softly once he saw her. “Are you okay?” she asked barely above a whisper. He clenched his jaw as he nodded. “The blue one would be perfect,” she comforted. He nodded as he took a hold of it.
He leaned towards her pressing his lips against her cheek. “Thank you,” he whispered before he walked past her towards the bed to start getting dressed.
It had been another forty minutes, he was sitting on the couch texting with Jack when Y/N walked into the living room. Her boots clicked against the hardwood floor. He lifted his gaze from his phone towards her. She met his tired gaze. He smiled softly towards her.
“What’s wrong?” she asked as she walked towards the couch.
“I’m not a rookie after today,” he mumbled, blinking rapidly as he nodded. She pouted her lips as she rested her head onto his shoulder. He reached his hand over and squeezed her thigh, “Now if I make a mistake, the press can no longer say it's because I’m a rookie. They can just say I’m a bad player,” he said tilted his head back against the top of the couch.
“Lukey, don’t say that,” she took a hold of his hand and squeezed it, “You’re an amazing player and you know it,” she reassured, lifting her head from his shoulder. “It’s been a long year, try and enjoy your last rookie game and enjoy the off-season,” she mumbled, pressing her lips to his cheek afterwards. He smiled as his cheeks pinked up.
“I love you, you know that?” he let out before he leaned towards her, kissing her softly.
~~~
The game ended with a 4-1 loss for the Devils. She knew that Luke was going to be either in two moods. Excited that it was finally done or sad. There was no in-between. Instead of waiting outside of the locker room, she decided to wait outside their car in the parking garage.
She texted him that, that is what she was planning on doing. He sent back a smiley emoji, which said that he was in a decent enough mood. She tapped her fingertips against the car door as she kept her gaze on her phone, scrolling through Twitter.
For the most part, Twitter was just focused on the battle for the final wildcard spot. She was just happy to not see any mean tweets towards Luke or the rest of the team. She lifted her gaze to see Luke walking beside Dawson as they were making their way towards their cars.
Luke was carrying a brown bag, she shoved her phone into her pocket. Luke smiled towards Dawson, waving towards him slightly before he jogged towards Y/N. He smiled a wide toothy grin. She giggled as she stared towards him confused. “Hey baby,” he mumbled as he engulfed her in a hug. She wrapped her arms around the center of his back.
“Ready for off-season,” he whispered against her ear as he pulled away. She smiled softly as she took a hold of his cheeks and pulled him towards her. She kissed him urgently.
“What’s this?” she asked, referencing the bag in his hand. He glanced down towards it, smiling widely.
“Dinner,” he said before he leaned towards her and kissed her.
After a few seconds, they climbed into the car together, he placed the bag in the backseat. He turned the car on as he connected his bluetooth. He tilted his head to the side, taking in a long breath as he puckered his lips awaiting a kiss. She rolled her eyes playfully as she leaned over and kissed him. “Needy,” she muttered against his lips before she tried to pull away. He hummed before he reached his hand over and pulled her towards him again.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” she asked as she pulled away, tilting her head to the side. He nodded, taking in a long breath.
“I’m a seasoned player now,” he cleared his throat, smirking. He put the car in drive as he began pulling out of the parking garage.
“Oh, oh are you?” she teased. He nodded while biting his bottom lip. She clenched her jaw as she watched his smile falter slightly. “You’re allowed to be a little sad,” she let out. He took a sharp breath as he licked his lips. “It was a crazy year,”
“Just wish we made the playoffs,” he mumbled. She nodded as he reached his hand over and rested it onto her thigh, he ran his hand up and down her thigh slowly. “But I’m glad to rest and visit Michigan again,” he explained.
“I’m sure, my love,” she let out.
“But now we get to watch Quinny,” he said with a dry chuckle. She rolled her eyes playfully. “We’re gonna get a suite and watch the games, it’s gonna be great,” he exclaimed.
She tilted her head to the side, admiring his side profile as the city lights flashed behind him. A small pout on her lips. He shifted his gaze towards her as they stopped at a red light. “I’m okay,” he muttered as he looked deeply into her eyes.
“Okay,” she let out barely above a whisper as she reached her hand over and ran her hand across his cheek.
“I’m going all Jason Kelce if Quinn makes the finals,” he let out with a small smirk. She laughed as she rolled her eyes playfully.
Lover Boy-The Relationship
~Lover Boy by Phum Viphurit~
Author's Note: Listen idk Summary: Luke and Y/N put a title on their relationship Warnings: underage drinking Word Count: 2,117 Luke Hughes x Edwards sister!reader
Tumblr media
She sat at the table with Nessa beside her, watching the boys be swarmed with girls. She clenched her jaw as she watched Luke flirt with a short blonde girl. Nessa rested her hand onto Y/N’s arm trying to be reassuring.
Ethan wandered towards the pair, alone. He held three drinks in his hand as he delicately rested them onto the table. The three glasses were filled to the brim with mixed drinks. Y/N took a hold of one of the glasses and began to sip for several seconds. She forced her gaze back down at the drink, staring at the drink less full.
Ethan stared towards her, wide eyed. He slowly sat down, sliding his glass towards himself. “What’s wrong with you?” he asked before he took a sip of his drink. She shrugged as she pushed the glass away from her. “Your date not go well last night?” he asked.
It was the exact opposite, it was the best night she’s ever had. They didn’t get back to their dorm building until after two in the morning. She watched as Luke’s gaze shifted towards their table. He straightened his posture as he smiled politely towards the girl before he wandered away from the crowd.
“It was fine,” she muttered, lying. Ethan nodded suspiciously.
She watched him walk towards the table, keeping his attention towards Ethan. Y/N dropped her gaze towards her phone on the table. She began scrolling through Instagram.
“What happened?” Ethan asked Luke, he shrugged as a reply as he rested his hands on the table. He let out a huff of air as he shifted his gaze towards Y/N, his cheeks flushing red.
“She kept asking about when I’ll be in the NHL, not even sure she knows my name,” Luke said while chuckling nervously, he met Y/N’s gaze. She clenched her jaw as she looked towards Nessa.
“That’s annoying,” Ethan said before he took a sip of his drink, his eyes danced around the bar. “I’m gonna go talk to some girl,” he continued as he danced awkwardly with the drink in his hand away from the table. He pointed towards Y/N while nodding dramatically. He was drunk, it was easy to tell, he never dances unless he was drinking. Y/N smiled towards him before she shifted her gaze towards Luke.
Luke shifted awkwardly as he glanced towards Nessa before he met Y/N’s gaze again. “I’ve got to use the bathroom,” Nessa muttered as she stood up from the table and began manuering through the bar away from the pair.
Luke leaned his body against the table, a shy smile on his lips. “I’m sorry, she came up to me. I didn’t-”
“Luke,” she interrupted, leaning towards him. His mouth clamped shut. “It’s not like we’re dating,” she said as she smiled kindly towards him. He leaned towards her, glancing around him. He checked to see if there were any wandering eyes.
“Well, that’s the goal though, right?” he asked, widening his eyes.
“Is it?” she asked while a smirk toyed to her lips.
He scoffed playfully as he leaned back, crossing his arms over his chest. His lips curled up in a teasing smirk. “I mean of course,” he let out as he ran his tongue over his bottom lip as he pulled his lips between his teeth.
Before she could say anything, Dylan came up behind Luke smacking his hand against his shoulder, “Come on, we're doing shots,” Dylan took a hold of Luke’s bicep forcing him away from the table. Luke smiled towards her as he shook his head laughing.
She dropped her gaze towards the drink, she took a hold of her straw and began stirring her drink.
~~~
Several hours later, Luke was walking both Nessa and Y/N back to their dorm. They were waiting in the elevator. It was awkward silence as Nessa was standing between Luke and Y/N.
Nessa’s phone began buzzing in her pocket, she quickly pulled it out and brought her phone to her ear. “Hey,” she whispered, her eyes widened as she glanced towards Y/N. “Yeah, I’ll be down in like two minutes,” she mumbled, “Alright, love you.”
Y/N furrowed her eyebrows as she looked Nessa up and down.
“Derek’s here, we’re gonna go to his place,” she explained as she looked towards Luke. The elevator doors opened, letting Luke and Y/N step off. Nessa pressed the lobby button as she winked towards the pair.
They stared towards one another, fighting off the smiles forming on their lips. “She’s ridicious,” Y/N let out as she started walking backwards towards her end of the hallway. She held out her hand towards him. He excitedly took a hold of her hand, letting her lead him astray towards her room.
Shamelessly, he stared towards her frame, watching her hips sway back and forth. “What am I supposed to tell Duker?” he mumbled as she slowly stopped in front of her door, leaning her back against the door. He rested his hands against the door, holding her in place. She looked towards him, shrugging his shoulders.
“Tell him you changed your mind about the girl at the bar,” she teased.
“He knows I’m walking you to your dorm because Eddie asked me too,” he mumbled as he brushed a few pieces of hair away from her face.
“Tell Duker that I didn’t want to be alone and you slept on my floor,” she said as she dug her keys out of her pocket. She held the keys in front of her face, he gladly took them and unlocked the door for her.
“He’s not going to believe that,” he whispered as he unlocked the door, handing her the keys before he shoved the door open. He rested his hands onto her hips as he guided her into the dorm room. “But I don’t really care,” he mumbled as he locked the door behind him before he planted his lips onto hers.
She hummed against his lips as he tightened his grip against her hips. She pulled away, taking a deep breath, “We’re not-” she trailed off, suddenly very nervous. He shook his head instantly.
“No, we’re gonna do a lot of this,” he mumbled slowly before he pressed his lips against hers. She began stumbling backwards towards her bed as their lips remained connected. Her body began to tingle as he loosened his grip along her body, gliding his hands delicately along her hips.
She pulled away from him, breathily as she sat down on her bed, looking up towards him. He took in a sharp breath as he scanned her features. Everything about her seemed perfect. He delicately reached his hand towards her cheek, brushing her hair behind her ear.
He leaned down towards her, gliding his hand from her jaw towards her chin. He tilted her head up. He leaned towards her, his lips hovering over her own. He smiled as he watched her lean towards him, craving his lips against hers.
His phone began vibrating in his pocket, he groaned as he pulled away from her. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled. He pulled his phone from his pocket to see Dylan calling him. He pulled it towards his ear. She sighed as she hopped off the bed and wandered towards her closet.
He watched her movements, “Duker what’s up?” Luke asked as he watched her reach into her closet for comfy clothes. She tilted her head to the side while widening her eyes. Luke smiled as he rolled his eyes playfully. He spun around facing away from her.
“I’m staying at Rutger’s to-tonight, I can’t get back to the ro-room,” Dylan slurred. There was shuffling on his end of the phone.
“He’s fucked man, Kayleigh and I are taking care of him,” Rutger offered on the phone.
“Yeah, alright, well tell him to call me in the morning,” Luke expressed as he kept staring towards the small alarm clock on her side table.
“Will do, you make it back to your room okay?” Rutger asked. Luke cheeks flushed red as he took in a sharp breath.
“Yeah, yeah,” he lied. Rutger hummed.
“Good, man, see you tomorrow,” Rutger said before he hung up the phone.
Luke pulled the phone from his ear, he delicately placed it down onto the side table, tilting his head back. “Can I look at you now?” he asked, quietly. She hummed as he spun around. She smiled as she walked towards him.
“Dylan okay?” she asked as she delicately rested her hands onto his chest.
“He’s going to regret being alive tomorrow but Rutger and Kayleigh are taking care of him,” Luke explained as he took a hold of her waist, pulling her towards him. “Come on,” he whispered as he pressed his lips against her cheek, “Let’s get some sleep,”
He reached around her waist, lifting her up in the air. A dramatic laugh leaves her throat as she is thrown onto the mattress. “Luke, what are you doing?” she asked as she took in a sharp breath. He tugged on the comforter as he climbed underneath the blanket, she quickly tucked her legs underneath. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her towards him. He pressed his lips against her shoulder. “We cuddle now?” she asked as she took a hold of his hand, interlocking their fingers. He hummed as he nuzzled into her neck.
She smiled to herself as she pushed herself back, creating less space between them. “Is that okay?” he asked, his voice slightly rasped. She spun arond slowly, meeting his gaze. She took her hand away from his and rested it onto his cheek, running her thumb across his cheek.
“Think so,” she muttered as she pulled him towards her, kissing him delicately.
~~~
It had been nearly a month since their first date together. They’ve practically spent nearly every night together they could. Whether that was a group setting with the other players or just themselves.
The only other person that knew about their situation was Nessa. It was starting to become a lot of pressure for her. She was doing everything in her power to not let it slip.
Luke and Y/N were walking side by side through the dining hall searching for something to eat. Ethan, Dylan, Nessa, and Derek were all wandering around as well.
“Can we tell Duker? It would make things so much easier,” he whispered as he smiled politely to a friend from one of his classes. Her eyes widened as she shook her head.
“You tell Dylan and then he tells Jacob and then he tells Rutger and then-” she rambled.
“Okay, okay, I get it. I just-when can we start telling people?” he asked as he guided her towards one of the stations. He picked up a plate and began adding chicken to his plate. She sighed as she brushed a few pieces of hair away from her face.
“When this becomes serious,” she muttered as she walked away from him. Luke lifted his gaze as he watched her walk away from. He scoffed while rolling his eyes.
He clenched his jaw as he finished making his plate. He walked towards the large circle booth the other members of their little friend group were sitting at. There was only one spot left, and it was on the end beside Ethan. Y/N was sitting beside Nessa on the other side of the table.
“Hughesy, are you going out tomorrow night? Might be our last friday we can go out for a while,” Ethan asked before he took a dramatic bite of his salad on his plate. Luke shook his head as he met Y/N’s gaze for a second.
A small smirk formed onto his lips, “I’m taking my girlfriend out to dinner and we’re going to this drive-in movie tomorrow,” he let out. Y/N’s eyes widened slightly as she kept her gaze towards her food, Nessa gripped her thigh.
The boys all cheer, excitedly, “Since when dude?” Dylan said, reaching across the table to scruff Luke’s hair. He leaned away with a smirk on his lips, he shrugged slightly.
“I haven’t really asked her yet, but pretty sure she’s my girlfriend,” he said, switching his gaze towards Y/N. Her gaze was still staring at her food.
Ethan wrapped his arm around Luke’s shoulder, glancing towards Y/N and back towards Luke, “You happy?” Ethan questioned, meeting Luke’s eye. Luke nodded, nervously. “Good,” he muttered as he switched his gaze back towards Y/N.
She finally lifted her head to meet Ethan’s gaze, he winked towards her.
Until I Come Home
~Until I Come Home by Two Feet & grandson~
Author's Note: this was requested and it's so cute Summary: Cole is late for the plane for a roadie Warnings: implied smut Word Count: 802 Cole Caufield x fm!reader
Tumblr media
Her head rested on his bare chest, soaking up every single moment of him. This was one of the longest road trips he was going on, all she wanted was him to be home with her, but he was going to be gone for ten days.
Ten days of only phone calls and nothing else. All she wanted was this moment to never end. “I gotta get going,” he whispered as he pressed his lips to the top of her head, starting to get up from the bed.
“No,” she mumbled as she climbed onto his frame, leaning her lips down, kissing his lips slowly but urgently.
He should’ve gotten up to shower thirty minutes ago. Cole knew he was running late, his teammates were going to kill him if he was late for the plane. Again.
But right now, Y/N’s lips were more important. She knew what she was doing, trailing her lips down his body. Slow, wet kisses down his chizzeled frame.
“Baby,” he let out, breathily. She hummed against his ab muscle as he tilted his head back. “I need to go,” he muttered.
She lifted her head, climbing up his frame, her nose bumped against his. “No,” she mumbled, “Can’t leave,” she whispered before she kissed his lips for a brief second.
Cole rested his hands on her hips, tightly. “You’re going to get me in so much trouble,” he whispered as she pulled away. He met her gaze, running his hands up and down her side. She ran her hands up and down his chest, smiling towards him. He tilted his head back, shutting his eyes as he let out a dry chuckle.
“It’s only fair that I get you for a few more minutes, you’re leaving for ten days,” she leaned down, resting her hands on the base of his neck, she ran her thumbs along his jawline. He smirked as he clenched his jaw.
He took a hold of legs, slowly rolling her over onto her back, He separated her legs with his knee as he slowly met her lips. “At least, let’s move this to the shower please, I really need to get moving,” He mumbled between kisses against her lips. He pulled away, meeting her gaze, he raised his eyebrows.
She nodded slowly as Cole climbed off of her. He wrapped his arms around her waist lifting her from the bed. He tossed her onto his shoulder, giggles fell from her lips as she excitedly rested her hands on his lowerback as they manuvered into the bathroom. He delicately placed her down onto her feet and scanned her features.
“We’re showering, nothing else,” he pointed his finger towards her face, a teasing smirk. She nodded as she slowly pulled her tanktop away from her frame before she slowly slipped her underwear off of her frame. “Oh god, why do you have to look like that,” he mumbled as he slipped his boxers from his frame. He leaned towards her, kissing her urgently.
He shoved open the shower door, stumbling inside with their lips still connected. He turned the shower on, the water hot surrounding them. Steam filled the room. “You’re a bad influence,” he mumbled against her lips as he tilted his head back against the water, letting it hit his face.
“You’re the one leaving for ten days,” she mumbled, a teasing smirk on her lips.
~~~
He was jogging towards the plane, the social media manager not even outside to take photos of his entrance look. His hair was wet as the suit on his frame was a dark purple that was practically wrinkled.
The entire plane started shouting random things towards him. He smiled nervously as his cheeks flushed bright red.
“Sorry, I’m sorry,” he mumbled as he walked past each player, he sat down beside Alex who was on FaceTime with his girlfriend.
“Real nice,” Alex muttered as he elbowed him in the side.
Martin was sitting on the other set of seats on the plane, “I wish I could bench you,” he muttered, a small chuckle leaving his lips; he was joking of course.
“I’m sorry, I was-” he trailed off, deciding it was better to leave out his morning activities with his coach. Despite their close relationship. His coach didn’t need to know that he was running extremely late because of his gorgeous girlfriend.
“What were you up to?” Alex asked in a whisper, leaning towards Cole.
Cole smirked as he tilted his head back against the headrest. He turned his head to meet Alex’s gaze, “My girlfriend hates when I leave for roadies,” he said vaguely.
“Oh sure,” Alex said laughing as he shifted his attention back towards his own girlfriend on FaceTime.
Cole shut his eyes, picturing Y/N, a smirk still on his lips.

Everywhere, Everything
~Everywhere, Everything by Noah Kahan~ Author's Note: this idea has been circulating my mind for weeks, so here you go fam. blah blah blah words italtics are flashbacks Summary: long distance, it's hard lol Warnings: angst, swearing Word Count: 5,221 Luke Hughes x fm!reader
Tumblr media
It was usual for her on Friday nights, if Luke was in town, for her to go to his house and spend the weekend with him. That was the plan, she had her duffle bag full to the brim of all of her clothing options and her school work necessities. She walked up the steps to see Ethan and Dylan were sitting on the porch drinking some beers.
“Have you talked to Hughesy yet?” Dylan asked, stopping Y/N in her tracks to spin around to meet his gaze. She shook her head slowly. He nodded while pressing his lips together, “You should-” he trailed off as he brought his drink to his lips again.
She stood still for a few seconds, her duffle bag feeling heavier by the second. Her gaze shifted between the pair of the boys, what were they implying? She took a deep breath as she entered the house. It was empty, but it was usually like that for Friday night. She walked down the hall towards Luke’s room and knocked before she pushed her way inside.
He was throwing random things into a bag when he lifted his gaze, he smiled so wide. “Baby,” he mumbled, dropping the pair of socks he had in his hand into the back. He engulfed her in a hug, savoring the moment. “They called,” he whispered into her ear.
She felt her chest tighten as she felt her eyes tear up. She pulled away to meet his gaze. His cheeks flushed red as his smile was still wide and bright. His eyes scanned her features.
“I’m so proud of you, my love,” she whispered, looking deeply into his eyes. He pressed his lips together shyly as he pulled away from her grasp, back towards the bag on the bed. She delicately placed hers on the floor. Clearing her throat, she questioned, “When do you leave?”
“Sunday morning, my flight is at like four in the morning.” he let out while shaking his head, he lifted his gaze towards her. She was nodding slowly, staring at the floor. “I only found out like two hours ago, I wanted to tell you in person,” he mumbled as he took steps towards her once more.
He took a hold of her arms, scanning her teary features. “We’ll make it work, I will promise you that,” he said, tilting his head to try and maintain eye contact with her.
She clenched her jaw as she smiled softly. “We’ll have the summer to worry about that,” she whispered as she rested her hand onto his chest. “Let’s just celebrate,” she mumbled.
“Celebrate?” he asked, raising his eyebrows fighting the smirk on his lips. She rolled her eyes playfully as she shoved him backwards slightly.
“I meant dinner,” she teased before she took a hold of his hand, guiding him out of his room. “And then maybe some of that,” she spun around to meet his gaze, smirking.
“Aw, you’re taking me out to dinner, how sweet,” he teased. She gasped playfully.
“No sir, you’re paying with that big ‘ol NHL contract you’re about to get,”
~~~
It was Luke’s last morning in Michigan before he was supposed to head to New Jersey for the rest of the season. They were laying in her bed, in her apartment, in silence. Her head rested on his chest as he kept his gaze towards the ceiling. His hand trailed delicately up and down her bare back.
“Are we doing this?” he asked, his voice hoarse.
It was only a four word question but it held so much value. The entire summer they went back and forth on what would be best. Long distance or breaking up. They’ve been together for almost two years. Two years they didn’t want to throw down the drain because he was moving and living his dream.
But long distance is hard, harder than anyone could suspect when getting involved in a relationship.
“Yeah,” she let out barely above a whisper as she absentmindedly ran her fingers up and down his chest. “We’re going to be okay,” she mumbled as she lifted her head to meet his eye.
He had a soft smile on his lips as his hand glided up her back, running his fingers through the ends of her hair. “Any time there’s a free weekend and I’m back in Jersey, you tell me and I’ll book your flight. No hesistation,” he mumbled. She nodded.  She leaned towards him, pressing her lips against his delicately. It was soft and intimate.
“Baby,” he mumbled against her lips. She pulled away, her breathing faster than before. She opened her eyes slowly, meeting his gaze. “I-” he started before he took a hold of the back of her neck softly as he pulled her towards him, kissing her urgently.
Her finger tips grazed his skin, as she delicately took a hold of his chin. “I have to get ready to leave,” he said, pulling away. She kept her eyes shut, before she pecked his lips for a few seconds. She leaned her body away from him, letting him slip away from her.
She fell onto her back, watching him get dressed before he wandered towards the bathroom. Her eyes shifted towards the ceiling fan, she watched it spin as she felt her eyes tear up. He reappeared after a few seconds, he wandered towards the hat sitting on the end table. He reached towards it.
“Wait,” she mumbled. He met her teary gaze, clenching his jaw. It was a Michigan beanie. It was one of her favorites that he wore. He wore it for the majority of the season last year, swore it was lucky. “Can you leave it?” she let out barely above a whisper. He glanced towards it and back towards her and nodded quickly.
“Of course,” he muttered leaning towards her, kissing her forehead, “I’ll dig into my bag to find a different one,” he smiled softly towards her before he wandered towards the living room.
She stood up from the bed and began to get dressed in a hoodie and a pair of comfy shorts. He didn’t want her to travel to the airport with him, he was having Dylan drive him. She walked into the living room to see him adjusting the beanie on his head in her circle mirror. She smiled towards him, her heart beating loud and dramatically in her ear.
He tilted his head to the side as he met her gaze, he felt tears fill his eyes. Suddenly aware of what this means. Her lips fell into a pout as she stepped towards him, he quickly engulfed her in a hug. He took a hold of the back of her head, holding her as close as he possibly could. His watch buzzed, he glanced down to see a text from Dylan.
“Duker’s here,” he mumbled before he pressed his lips to her forehead. She pulled her head away from his chest, scanning his features. He took a hold of her cheeks, rubbing his thumbs against her skin. “I love you,” he mumbled, looking deeply into her eyes.
“I love you too,” she whispered, her voice cracking. He leaned towards her, kissing her urgently; knowing it’s the last time for months.
He reluctantly pulled away from her, pressing his lips together. He wiped his hand across his eyes, drying the tears. Majority of his stuff was in Jersey already, so he only had his suitcase he packed for the last two weeks in Michigan. He took a hold of it, turning around to look at Y/N.
She shook her head, “You have to go now,” she mumbled, spinning around to not look at him. He stayed still, “I can’t watch you leave, you-you have to just go,” she said through a sob. He felt his heart shatter, he was going to miss her so much.
“I love you,” he let out, walking towards the door. He dragged his suitcase behind him, “I’ll call you when I get to Jack’s, show you the apartment,” he explained as he walked towards the door, opening.
“Okay,” she let out.
He looked towards her, taking in a shaky breath before he forced himself out the door. The apartment door shut behind him. He continued down the hallway, letting himself cry. He wasn’t a crier. He rarely cried about anything but right now that’s all he could do.
It didn’t take long for him to get down and out of the building. Dylan was sitting in his car right in front of the apartment building. Luke opened the trunk of the car and dropped his suitcase inside. He slammed it shut before he walked towards the passenger seat. He fell down into the seat and wiped his eyes once more.
“Hey man,” Dylan let out as he began driving away from the apartment.
“Hey, sorry I’m being a-” he trailed off as he shook his head, he wiped his eyes once more while taking a deep breath.
“Don’t apologize, she’ll be alright. We’ll look out for her. You’ll be alright, you got your brother, and the NHL,” Dylan expressed as he slapped his hand against Luke’s shoulder. Luke nodded as he kept his jaw clenched.
“Harder than I thought,” he mumbled as he ran his hand across his chin.
Back in Y/N’s apartment, she was sitting on her couch as she watched Friends. Her apartment door was pushed open to reveal her roommate and best friend, Penelope. She dropped her purse onto the counter and quickly moved towards Y/N on the couch.
Y/N lifted her head to meet Penelope’s gaze. Y/N had been crying, the entire time since Luke left fifteen minutes ago. “I couldn’t look at him, I couldn’t watch him walk away,” she mumbled. Penelope pulled her towards her side, comforting her the best she could.
“But you guys are still together?” she questioned.
“Yeah but I won’t see him for months, I’m not strong enough for this,” Y/N cried out.
“Yes, yes you are, you two are meant to be,” Penelope mumbled as she stroked Y/N’s hair. “It’s just for a year and a half right? You took summer courses this summer, got ahead. It’ll be okay, you guys will get through it,”
~Oct. 12~
She was sitting in front of her vanity, finishing her makeup for her evening out on the town. Penelope, the UMich hockey team, their partners, and herself were all going to one of the local sports bars. Tonight was the opening game of the regular season for the Devils and the Red Wings.
So they wanted to go watch and support Luke.
It was three hours until game time and Luke was starting to FaceTime her. She perked up excitedly as she set up her phone against the mirror as she accepted the call. He was getting ready in the bathroom, he was shirtless with his hair dripping wet still. Her eyes widened at the sight, he chuckled as he saw the shocked look on her features.
“Hey, love,” she mumbled as she smiled widely.
“Where are you going looking all pretty?” he asked as he leaned down towards the camera, trying to get a better look. She smiled shyly as she dropped her gaze towards the mascara in her makeup bag. The second to last step in her routine.
“A whole bunch of us are going to Scorekeepers to watch your game,” she said excitedly as she began untwisting her mascara to apply it to her eyes.
“Wait really?” he asked, his cheeks flushed red instantly.
“Yeah, the team is going to be there, they’re bringing their girlfriends and Penelope is coming with me too,” she explained as she began applying her mascara.
He ran a towel over his hair harshly, specifically at that moment so she wouldn’t tell him to stop. “That’s great, I hope you have fun,” he mumbled as he dropped the towel to the floor, he took a hold of some of his hair products as he began to style his damp hair.
“We will, are you nervous?” she questioned dropping the tube into her bag before she reached for her highlighter. She watched him shake his head. “That’s good,” she muttered.
“My game day looks are going to be rough without you doing my hair for me,” he expressed, a chuckle leaving his throat as he looked towards his phone screen to meet her gaze.
She smiled widely while letting out a giggle, “It looks cute,” she mumbled. He smiled softly as he scanned her features through the phone screen, his chest aching.
“Can you visit this weekend? I’ve got a game tomorrow but then I just have practices Saturday and Sunday,” he asked, his body erupting in tingles as his breath caught in his throat.
Her smile faltered slightly, “I’ve got to work this weekend, my love, I need the money.”
He nodded as he clenched his jaw. “Okay, yeah,” he cleared his throat, “We’ll plan for another weekend. We’ll figure it out,” he said, forcing a smile onto his lips. She pouted her lip as she tilted her head back blinking rapidly, “It’s okay, baby, we’ll find a weekend,” he reassured. She nodded.
It was several hours later and it was halfway through the first period. She sighed as yet another man walked up beside her and began flirting with her. “Let me buy you a drink,” he muttered, raising his hand up to try and get the bartender's attention. He failed.
“No, I’m okay, thank you though,” she muttered as she met his kind gaze.
“Okay, no problem. I’m Dean,” he introduced himself, offering his hand to her. Y/N scanned his frame, ashamed of the butterflies circluating her stomach. She shook his head.
“Y/N, but I should tell you I have a boyfriend,” she explained, smiling. His smirk fell from his lips for only a moment before he smiled again.
“Cool, is he here with you?” he asked, glancing around the bar for some sign of said boyfriend. His gaze lands on an angry looking Dylan in the corner of the bar.
“He’s not, no,” she mumbled, bringing the glass of water towards her lips. She took a sip while maintaining eye contact. “We’re long distance,” she explained. He nodded, leaning his body against the bartop.
“Where does he live?” Dean pressed on, it wasn’t to try and make a move on her. It was more curiosity than anything.
“Jersey,” she said, glancing back towards the screen to see the power play on the ice. Luke on the ice. Her eyes admired the forty-three on the ice before she looked back towards Dean.
“Wait,” Dean said, glancing at the TV and then back down towards her. “Is your boyfriend Luke Hughes?” he questioned. She furrowed her eyebrows harshly, as she slowly nodded. “He’s one lucky guy,” he said, scanning her frame once more, biting his bottom lip in the process. He didn’t say anything else before he wandered away from her.
She found herself smiling, she forced the smile off of her lips as she switched her gaze to the TV screen just as Jack scored. The UMich team erupted in cheers, while everyone else in the bar groaned.
Dylan stepped in front of her, a scowl on his lips. “What are you doing?” he questioned harshly.
She clenched her jaw as she met Dylan’s gaze, “What?” she asked quietly.
“What was that? You have a boyfriend, you know,” he accused. Her mouth fell open as she let out a huff of air.
She clenched her jaw as she felt her skin get hot and her eyes filled with tears. “Luke’s been gone for almost two months,” she began, she paused as she took a shaky breath, “We talk once a day and it’s only to update each other about our lives. I miss my boyfriend and I’m sorry but I miss the attention,” she said, throwing her arms in the air.
Dylan tilted his head to the side, a sad smile on his lips.
“I miss getting kissed,” she started, a tear falling onto her cheek, “I miss talking about anything other than hockey. I miss being held. I miss being flirted with. I miss my boyfriend. But I can’t see him because I have to work my stupid minimum wage job every weekend because I can’t afford to not work! So excuse me, if I want to enjoy the attention of an unfortunately cute boy!”
“Y/N,” he mumbled.
“I don’t need this,” she mumbled, meeting Dylan’s gaze, “I’m going to watch the rest of the game at home,” she said standing up from her barstool.
“Y/N don’t, come on, I’m sorry. He’s my best friend-I was just-” he ranted on but she walked away, out of the bar towards her car.
The game finished with a win and Luke finally looked at his phone once he stepped inside the apartment with Jack behind him. There was one text from Y/N and about fifteen texts from Dylan.
Duker: Dude! Awesome win
Duker: You played fucking great! Listen though, call me? I gotta tell you something
Duker: damn dude the game ended like an hour ago, call me?!
Duker: HELLO!? HUGHESY??
The messages continued on like that. He furrowed his eyebrows harshly as he pulled his phone to his ear as he called him. “Dukes, what's wrong?” Luke asked, glancing toward Jack before he wandered into his bedroom.
“Hey man, you played great, so proud and all that. Call your girlfriend more,” he began. Luke's face scrunched together at the sudden statement.
“What?” Luke let out.
“She’s miserable and you only calling her once a fucking day isn’t helping,” Dylan expressed.
“What are you talking about?” Luke questioned as he kicked his shoes off and shoved them towards the side table.
“She’s lonely and misses you. She’s-you have no right to get pissed at her when I tell you this by the way,” he paused. Luke’s eyes widened as he slowly sat down on his bed, “She’s letting guys flirt with her at bars because you aren’t giving her any attention,”
He clenched his jaw hard as his fist tightened as he slammed his fist against the mattress. He licked his lips as he tilted his head back. Shutting his eyes he let out a long drawn out breath.
“She could call me too,” he let out, “If-if she’s-”
“Come on, man, she doesn’t want to be an inconvience to you. You’re living a life none of us understand,” he let out.
Luke tilted his head back, feeling his eyes fill with tears, “I can’t hear her voice more than once a day because I miss her so fucking much I can’t think about anything else,”
“Tell her that Hughesy, come on,” Dylan said, a huff of air leaving his lips. “Call her,” Dylan demanded before he hung up the phone. Luke slowly dropped his phone from his ear as he pulled up her contact.
He stared at the profile photo, it was a photo of them after their one year anniversary. He was kissing her cheek as she was smiling widely. He pressed the call button as he pulled it towards his ear, he laid down on his back. He stared towards the ceiling. She answered on the second ring.
“Hey,” she mumbled, her voice cracking, “Great job tonight, my love,”
He shut his eyes, feeling like a weight collapsed on his chest. “Thank you, beautiful,” he let out, his voice scratchy. It was silent for a few seconds, “I fucking miss you,” he let out, a sob climbing in his throat.
“This is harder than we thought, huh?” she let out, clearly crying. He swallowed hard as he pressed his lips together.
“Request off the weekend before Halloween, please,” he begged, “I need to see you,” he continued. She swallowed hard as she hummed.
After a couple minutes, the conversation wasn’t filled with sadness as they chatted about the game. “It’s going to take a while to get used to,” he let out, a chuckle leaving his throat. She hummed breathily.
He was laying in bed, staring towards the ceiling, biting his bottom lip as he began to remember the last morning of them together. The feeling of her lips on his skin, her breathy moans in his ear. He craved her, he needed her yet she was so far away.
“Hey,” he let out barely above a whisper, tilting his head back.
“Yeah?” she let out, a smile forming to her lips.
“You alone?” he asked. She let out a soft giggle.
~Feb~
The broadcast team announced that Luke would not be returning to the game due to a lower body injury. She was pacing back and forth, Penelope trying to calm her down. It was no use. It was probably precautionary because got off the ice on his own accord but right now all she can think about is that he was out for the remainder of the season. He was going to be in a bad mood all of the time now.
It was his rookie year, she understood that he was stressed, allowing him to have those days. He needed those days to fully process everything he was going through. The game was slowly coming to an end, a loss for the Devils. It seemed like that was becoming more and more common this season.
“He’s probably fine,” Penelope offered again, her jaw clenched hard as she spoke. Remaining on the couch, she continued to watch Y/N pace back and forth.
“Please don’t-” she mumbled before her phone began to vibrate in her pocket, it was Luke. She pulled the phone to her ear, “Baby?” she questioned as she wandered towards her bedroom, away from Penelope.
“Hey, my love, I’m alright.” he began, he took in a sharp breath, “It looked worse than it is,” he explained. He sounded out of breath but he was probably walking back towards his car. He had driven seperate from Jack.
“Are you sure? You’re walking okay?” she questioned as she ran her hand across her mouth.
He hummed, “They gave me the option if I wanted to go back but I’d rather take the rest of the period off and rest for the next roadie,” he explained. She tilted her head back, letting out a long drawn out breath, “I promise I’m all good, We’ll watch a movie later, okay?”
They were starting to do that most nights, use Teleparty to watch movies together and just enjoy each other’s presence. It helps a lot with their relationship. They rarely talk but it helps them.
“Yeah, yeah, miss your face,” she muttered as she let out a dry chuckle.
A wide smile formed on his lips as he dropped in his driver seat of his car. He tilted his head back. “God, I miss you,” he mumbled as he clenched his jaw. “When’s your spring break?” he asked as he connected his phone to bluetooth. He buckled his seatbelt.
“March seventeeth to March twenty-fourth,” she mumbled, a small smile on her lips.
While pulling out of his parking spot, “I’ll book your flight, you’re visiting,” he said with a smile as he waited at the red light. She giggled, it was like music to his ears. “And don’t pull the whole, I got to work because I’ll send you your paycheck to make up for it,” he said with a small chuckle.
“Luke, don’t even think about it,” she said while laughing, she collapsed down onto her bed, staring towards the ceiling. “But that was the plan, of course,” she expressed.
“Good because the second I get home, I’m booking you a first class flight,” he explained as he continued driving, the smile on his lips never wavering.
“Okay, my love, call me when you get back home,” she mumbled as she kept her gaze on the ceiling fan.
“I will, find a movie for us,” he let out as he hung up the phone.
After another thirty minutes, Luke was sprailed out on his bed, shirtless as he propped up his laptop beside him. His hair was wet across his forehead as he took a cold shower once he got home.
He heard a knock on his door as Jack pushed open the door, “Hey man how’s that-oh,” he let out as he stared towards Luke’s appearance and his laptop, “Am I interrupting anything,” he trailed off. Luke chuckled nervously, squinting his eyes slightly. His cheeks flushed red.
“No, she’s not even on FaceTime yet,” Luke mumbled, chuckling. He rolled onto his back to meet Jack’s gaze. Jack nodded slowly, a smirk forming on his lips. “What do you want?” Luke asked with a smirk on his lips.
“You seem like you’re in a good mood,” Jack crossed his arms over his chest, still smirking. Luke nodded.
“My girlfriend is coming to visit in three weeks for the whole week,” he sing songed, Jack’s mouth fell open as he smacked his hand against Luke’s shoulder.
“That’s great! You need to see her,” Jack mumbled, “How’s that knee?” he crossed his arms over his chest again. Luke shrugged as Y/N began calling him.
“Hurts, but it’s just a strain, it’ll be fine,” he said. He brought his finger to his lips as he answered the phone. He didn’t need her to know that it was a bit worse than he told her. Jack shook his head as he walked out of the room, shutting the door.
~April 3rd, 2024~
It was the most anticipated game in the hockey world for a few days now. It was late in the third and the Devils were down by a goal. Luke had practically played the entire game, over thirty minutes in ice time. He was exhausted. He was frustrated. All she wanted to do was to give him a hug and cuddle him.
Luke skates with the puck, sluggish and tired. He was pushing through it the best he could. She covered her mouth with her hands as he wrists a shot towards the net, the game ended a few seconds later. He skates towards the bench with the rest of his teammates behind him.
Penelope wasn’t there to watch the game with her tonight, which was probably for the best. She had a feeling it would be a while till he called her. She shot up from her couch and began to walk towards her bathroom.
She walked through the airport, searching for Luke. He was standing beside a girl, forcing a smile on his lips as they took a photo. She thanked him quickly before she quickly walked away from him. Luke dropped his head, laughing nervously.
Y/N continued manuvering through the crowd of people. His eyes widened once he spotted her. It only took a few more steps before she let go of her suitcase and jumped into his arms.
Her arms wrapped tightly around his neck as her cheeks pressed against his cheek. He wrapped his arms around the center of her back. Her eyes shut tightly as she felt her chest tighten.
“I love you,” she mumbled as ran her fingers through the ends of his hair. It was longer than the last time she saw it.
“I get you the whole week, how lucky am I?” he muttered into her ear as she slowly slipped down his body. Her hands glided from the back of his neck, towards his cheeks. She rested her hands on his cheek as she scanned his flushed features. He leaned towards her, kissing her urgently, not afraid of any wandering eyes or cameras that could catch the moment.
He needed her to be as close as possible. His hands tightened on her waist, pulling her body towards him, “Come on, Baby girl, we’ve got the apartment to ourselves for a couple hours,” he whispered against her lips.
She finished showering, putting on a tanktop and a pair of shorts as she began to clean up her bedroom. She was wandering around her room, picking up random ideas to organize the place.
After a few minutes, she received a FaceTime call from Luke. She quickly sat down on her bed, answering the call instantly. She brushed a wet piece of hair away from her face as she stared towards Luke. He was showered as well, laying on his bed. His head was tilted back against the headrest.
His eyes were evidently scanning her face on his screen. He clenched his jaw as he took in a sharp breath. He shut his eyes hard as he began tearing up.
“I’m so tired,” he let out, his voice cracking as he spoke. Her lips fell into a pout as she scooted back against the bed. “I don’t know if I can do this,” he let out barely above a whisper. He opened his eyes, as a tear fell onto his cheek.
“Hey, hey, what do you mean?” she asked, furrowing her eyebrows. He shook his head as he pressed his lips together.
“I can’t handle the pressure, it’s too much,” he let out, another tear falling onto his cheek.
“Baby, it was a tough game-”
“It wasn’t just the game though, Can’t open Twitter without seeing everyone hate on me. I can’t do this,” he let out while shaking his head.
Y/N clenched her jaw as she tilted her head to the side. “Luke, it’s just a bad stretch of games. It’s not just on you, you need to take some weight off your shoulders,” she tried to help him.
“I can’t do that, I can’t do anything right,” he said, crying, tilting her head to the side as she met his gaze through the phone screen. “I miss you, I just wish you were in Jersey with me. I can’t handle another year of this,” he groaned out.
“I miss you too, my love. Luke, you are stronger than you think. I love you so much, you will get past this, you will find a way out. You are going to be just fine. The season is almost done, you’ll get a lot of rest. And you’ll see me for months straight to the point you’ll get tired of me,” she said with a sad smile forming on her lips. His lips curled upward slightly, a dry chuckle leaving his throat.
“Not possible, I could never get tired of you,” he said, happy to hear those words, “What if,” he paused as his eyebrows furrowed harshly in thought, “What if I stayed with you for a few days after the season is done?” he asked. Her eyes lit up excitedly.
“What if you stayed until the semester ends?” she asked, a smile on her face.
“Would Penelope be okay with that?” he asked.
“Baby, I think she would rather you be here all the time than hear me cry about missing you another minute,” she said with a wide smile, “And I’m sure the boys would love to see you,” she expressed.
“Then it’s a plan,” he said with a smile, his tears no longer falling. “I love you so much,”
It was usual for her on Friday nights, if Luke was in town, for her to go to his house and spend the weekend with him. That was the plan, she had her duffle bag full to the brim of all of her clothing options and her school work necessities. She walked up the steps to see Ethan and Dylan were sitting on the porch drinking some beers.
“Have you talked to Hughesy yet?” Dylan asked, stopping Y/N in her tracks to spin around to meet his gaze. She shook her head slowly. He nodded while pressing his lips together, “You should-” he trailed off as he brought his drink to his lips again.
She stood still for a few seconds, her duffle bag feeling heavier by the second. Her gaze shifted between the pair of the boys, what were they implying? She took a deep breath as she entered the house. It was empty, but it was usually like that for Friday night. She walked down the hall towards Luke’s room and knocked before she pushed her way inside.
He was throwing random things into a bag when he lifted his gaze, he smiled so wide. “Baby,” he mumbled, dropping the pair of socks he had in his hand into the back. He engulfed her in a hug, savoring the moment. “They called,” he whispered into her ear.
She felt her chest tighten as she felt her eyes tear up. She pulled away to meet his gaze. His cheeks flushed red as his smile was still wide and bright. His eyes scanned her features.
“I’m so proud of you, my love,” she whispered, looking deeply into his eyes. He pressed his lips together shyly as he pulled away from her grasp, back towards the bag on the bed. She delicately placed hers on the floor. Clearing her throat, she questioned, “When do you leave?”
“Sunday morning, my flight is at like four in the morning.” he let out while shaking his head, he lifted his gaze towards her. She was nodding slowly, staring at the floor. “I only found out like two hours ago, I wanted to tell you in person,” he mumbled as he took steps towards her once more.
He took a hold of her arms, scanning her teary features. “We’ll make it work, I will promise you that,” he said, tilting his head to try and maintain eye contact with her.
She clenched her jaw as she smiled softly. “We’ll have the summer to worry about that,” she whispered as she rested her hand onto his chest. “Let’s just celebrate,” she mumbled.
“Celebrate?” he asked, raising his eyebrows fighting the smirk on his lips. She rolled her eyes playfully as she shoved him backwards slightly.
“I meant dinner,” she teased before she took a hold of his hand, guiding him out of his room. “And then maybe some of that,” she spun around to meet his gaze, smirking.
“Aw, you’re taking me out to dinner, how sweet,” he teased. She gasped playfully.
“No sir, you’re paying with that big ‘ol NHL contract you’re about to get,”
It was Luke’s last morning in Michigan before he was supposed to head to New Jersey for the rest of the season. They were laying in her bed, in her apartment, in silence. Her head rested on his chest as he kept his gaze towards the ceiling. His hand trailed delicately up and down her bare back.
“Are we doing this?” he asked, his voice hoarse.
It was only a four word question but it held so much value. The entire summer they went back and forth on what would be best. Long distance or breaking up. They’ve been together for almost two years. Two years they didn’t want to throw down the drain because he was moving and living his dream.
But long distance is hard, harder than anyone could suspect when getting involved in a relationship.
“Yeah,” she let out barely above a whisper as she absentmindedly ran her fingers up and down his chest. “We’re going to be okay,” she mumbled as she lifted her head to meet his eye.
He had a soft smile on his lips as his hand glided up her back, running his fingers through the ends of her hair. “Any time there’s a free weekend and I’m back in Jersey, you tell me and I’ll book your flight. No hesistation,” he mumbled. She nodded.  She leaned towards him, pressing her lips against his delicately. It was soft and intimate.
“Baby,” he mumbled against her lips. She pulled away, her breathing faster than before. She opened her eyes slowly, meeting his gaze. “I-” he started before he took a hold of the back of her neck softly as he pulled her towards him, kissing her urgently.
Her finger tips grazed his skin, as she delicately took a hold of his chin. “I have to get ready to leave,” he said, pulling away. She kept her eyes shut, before she pecked his lips for a few seconds. She leaned her body away from him, letting him slip away from her.
She fell onto her back, watching him get dressed before he wandered towards the bathroom. Her eyes shifted towards the ceiling fan, she watched it spin as she felt her eyes tear up. He reappeared after a few seconds, he wandered towards the hat sitting on the end table. He reached towards it.
“Wait,” she mumbled. He met her teary gaze, clenching his jaw. It was a Michigan beanie. It was one of her favorites that he wore. He wore it for the majority of the season last year, swore it was lucky. “Can you leave it?” she let out barely above a whisper. He glanced towards it and back towards her and nodded quickly.
“Of course,” he muttered leaning towards her, kissing her forehead, “I’ll dig into my bag to find a different one,” he smiled softly towards her before he wandered towards the living room.
She stood up from the bed and began to get dressed in a hoodie and a pair of comfy shorts. He didn’t want her to travel to the airport with him, he was having Dylan drive him. She walked into the living room to see him adjusting the beanie on his head in her circle mirror. She smiled towards him, her heart beating loud and dramatically in her ear.
He tilted his head to the side as he met her gaze, he felt tears fill his eyes. Suddenly aware of what this means. Her lips fell into a pout as she stepped towards him, he quickly engulfed her in a hug. He took a hold of the back of her head, holding her as close as he possibly could. His watch buzzed, he glanced down to see a text from Dylan.
“Duker’s here,” he mumbled before he pressed his lips to her forehead. She pulled her head away from his chest, scanning his features. He took a hold of her cheeks, rubbing his thumbs against her skin. “I love you,” he mumbled, looking deeply into her eyes.
“I love you too,” she whispered, her voice cracking. He leaned towards her, kissing her urgently; knowing it’s the last time for months.
He reluctantly pulled away from her, pressing his lips together. He wiped his hand across his eyes, drying the tears. Majority of his stuff was in Jersey already, so he only had his suitcase he packed for the last two weeks in Michigan. He took a hold of it, turning around to look at Y/N.
She shook her head, “You have to go now,” she mumbled, spinning around to not look at him. He stayed still, “I can’t watch you leave, you-you have to just go,” she said through a sob. He felt his heart shatter, he was going to miss her so much.
“I love you,” he let out, walking towards the door. He dragged his suitcase behind him, “I’ll call you when I get to Jack’s, show you the apartment,” he explained as he walked towards the door, opening.
“Okay,” she let out.
He looked towards her, taking in a shaky breath before he forced himself out the door. The apartment door shut behind him. He continued down the hallway, letting himself cry. He wasn’t a crier. He rarely cried about anything but right now that’s all he could do.
It didn’t take long for him to get down and out of the building. Dylan was sitting in his car right in front of the apartment building. Luke opened the trunk of the car and dropped his suitcase inside. He slammed it shut before he walked towards the passenger seat. He fell down into the seat and wiped his eyes once more.
“Hey man,” Dylan let out as he began driving away from the apartment.
“Hey, sorry I’m being a-” he trailed off as he shook his head, he wiped his eyes once more while taking a deep breath.
“Don’t apologize, she’ll be alright. We’ll look out for her. You’ll be alright, you got your brother, and the NHL,” Dylan expressed as he slapped his hand against Luke’s shoulder. Luke nodded as he kept his jaw clenched.
“Harder than I thought,” he mumbled as he ran his hand across his chin.
Back in Y/N’s apartment, she was sitting on her couch as she watched Friends. Her apartment door was pushed open to reveal her roommate and best friend, Penelope. She dropped her purse onto the counter and quickly moved towards Y/N on the couch.
Y/N lifted her head to meet Penelope’s gaze. Y/N had been crying, the entire time since Luke left fifteen minutes ago. “I couldn’t look at him, I couldn’t watch him walk away,” she mumbled. Penelope pulled her towards her side, comforting her the best she could.
“But you guys are still together?” she questioned.
“Yeah but I won’t see him for months, I’m not strong enough for this,” Y/N cried out.
“Yes, yes you are, you two are meant to be,” Penelope mumbled as she stroked Y/N’s hair. “It’s just for a year and a half right? You took summer courses this summer, got ahead. It’ll be okay, you guys will get through it,”
~Oct. 12~
She was sitting in front of her vanity, finishing her makeup for her evening out on the town. Penelope, the UMich hockey team, their partners, and herself were all going to one of the local sports bars. Tonight was the opening game of the regular season for the Devils and the Red Wings.
So they wanted to go watch and support Luke.
It was three hours until game time and Luke was starting to FaceTime her. She perked up excitedly as she set up her phone against the mirror as she accepted the call. He was getting ready in the bathroom, he was shirtless with his hair dripping wet still. Her eyes widened at the sight, he chuckled as he saw the shocked look on her features.
“Hey, love,” she mumbled as she smiled widely.
“Where are you going looking all pretty?” he asked as he leaned down towards the camera, trying to get a better look. She smiled shyly as she dropped her gaze towards the mascara in her makeup bag. The second to last step in her routine.
“A whole bunch of us are going to Scorekeepers to watch your game,” she said excitedly as she began untwisting her mascara to apply it to her eyes.
“Wait really?” he asked, his cheeks flushed red instantly.
“Yeah, the team is going to be there, they’re bringing their girlfriends and Penelope is coming with me too,” she explained as she began applying her mascara.
He ran a towel over his hair harshly, specifically at that moment so she wouldn’t tell him to stop. “That’s great, I hope you have fun,” he mumbled as he dropped the towel to the floor, he took a hold of some of his hair products as he began to style his damp hair.
“We will, are you nervous?” she questioned dropping the tube into her bag before she reached for her highlighter. She watched him shake his head. “That’s good,” she muttered.
“My game day looks are going to be rough without you doing my hair for me,” he expressed, a chuckle leaving his throat as he looked towards his phone screen to meet her gaze.
She smiled widely while letting out a giggle, “It looks cute,” she mumbled. He smiled softly as he scanned her features through the phone screen, his chest aching.
“Can you visit this weekend? I’ve got a game tomorrow but then I just have practices Saturday and Sunday,” he asked, his body erupting in tingles as his breath caught in his throat.
Her smile faltered slightly, “I’ve got to work this weekend, my love, I need the money.”
He nodded as he clenched his jaw. “Okay, yeah,” he cleared his throat, “We’ll plan for another weekend. We’ll figure it out,” he said, forcing a smile onto his lips. She pouted her lip as she tilted her head back blinking rapidly, “It’s okay, baby, we’ll find a weekend,” he reassured. She nodded.
It was several hours later and it was halfway through the first period. She sighed as yet another man walked up beside her and began flirting with her. “Let me buy you a drink,” he muttered, raising his hand up to try and get the bartender's attention. He failed.
“No, I’m okay, thank you though,” she muttered as she met his kind gaze.
“Okay, no problem. I’m Dean,” he introduced himself, offering his hand to her. Y/N scanned his frame, ashamed of the butterflies circluating her stomach. She shook his head.
“Y/N, but I should tell you I have a boyfriend,” she explained, smiling. His smirk fell from his lips for only a moment before he smiled again.
“Cool, is he here with you?” he asked, glancing around the bar for some sign of said boyfriend. His gaze lands on an angry looking Dylan in the corner of the bar.
“He’s not, no,” she mumbled, bringing the glass of water towards her lips. She took a sip while maintaining eye contact. “We’re long distance,” she explained. He nodded, leaning his body against the bartop.
“Where does he live?” Dean pressed on, it wasn’t to try and make a move on her. It was more curiosity than anything.
“Jersey,” she said, glancing back towards the screen to see the power play on the ice. Luke on the ice. Her eyes admired the forty-three on the ice before she looked back towards Dean.
“Wait,” Dean said, glancing at the TV and then back down towards her. “Is your boyfriend Luke Hughes?” he questioned. She furrowed her eyebrows harshly, as she slowly nodded. “He’s one lucky guy,” he said, scanning her frame once more, biting his bottom lip in the process. He didn’t say anything else before he wandered away from her.
She found herself smiling, she forced the smile off of her lips as she switched her gaze to the TV screen just as Jack scored. The UMich team erupted in cheers, while everyone else in the bar groaned.
Dylan stepped in front of her, a scowl on his lips. “What are you doing?” he questioned harshly.
She clenched her jaw as she met Dylan’s gaze, “What?” she asked quietly.
“What was that? You have a boyfriend, you know,” he accused. Her mouth fell open as she let out a huff of air.
She clenched her jaw as she felt her skin get hot and her eyes filled with tears. “Luke’s been gone for almost two months,” she began, she paused as she took a shaky breath, “We talk once a day and it’s only to update each other about our lives. I miss my boyfriend and I’m sorry but I miss the attention,” she said, throwing her arms in the air.
Dylan tilted his head to the side, a sad smile on his lips.
“I miss getting kissed,” she started, a tear falling onto her cheek, “I miss talking about anything other than hockey. I miss being held. I miss being flirted with. I miss my boyfriend. But I can’t see him because I have to work my stupid minimum wage job every weekend because I can’t afford to not work! So excuse me, if I want to enjoy the attention of an unfortunately cute boy!”
“Y/N,” he mumbled.
“I don’t need this,” she mumbled, meeting Dylan’s gaze, “I’m going to watch the rest of the game at home,” she said standing up from her barstool.
“Y/N don’t, come on, I’m sorry. He’s my best friend-I was just-” he ranted on but she walked away, out of the bar towards her car.
The game finished with a win and Luke finally looked at his phone once he stepped inside the apartment with Jack behind him. There was one text from Y/N and about fifteen texts from Dylan.
Duker: Dude! Awesome win
Duker: You played fucking great! Listen though, call me? I gotta tell you something
Duker: damn dude the game ended like an hour ago, call me?!
Duker: HELLO!? HUGHESY??
The messages continued on like that. He furrowed his eyebrows harshly as he pulled his phone to his ear as he called him. “Dukes, what's wrong?” Luke asked, glancing toward Jack before he wandered into his bedroom.
“Hey man, you played great, so proud and all that. Call your girlfriend more,” he began. Luke's face scrunched together at the sudden statement.
“What?” Luke let out.
“She’s miserable and you only calling her once a fucking day isn’t helping,” Dylan expressed.
“What are you talking about?” Luke questioned as he kicked his shoes off and shoved them towards the side table.
“She’s lonely and misses you. She’s-you have no right to get pissed at her when I tell you this by the way,” he paused. Luke’s eyes widened as he slowly sat down on his bed, “She’s letting guys flirt with her at bars because you aren’t giving her any attention,”
He clenched his jaw hard as his fist tightened as he slammed his fist against the mattress. He licked his lips as he tilted his head back. Shutting his eyes he let out a long drawn out breath.
“She could call me too,” he let out, “If-if she’s-”
“Come on, man, she doesn’t want to be an inconvience to you. You’re living a life none of us understand,” he let out.
Luke tilted his head back, feeling his eyes fill with tears, “I can’t hear her voice more than once a day because I miss her so fucking much I can’t think about anything else,”
“Tell her that Hughesy, come on,” Dylan said, a huff of air leaving his lips. “Call her,” Dylan demanded before he hung up the phone. Luke slowly dropped his phone from his ear as he pulled up her contact.
He stared at the profile photo, it was a photo of them after their one year anniversary. He was kissing her cheek as she was smiling widely. He pressed the call button as he pulled it towards his ear, he laid down on his back. He stared towards the ceiling. She answered on the second ring.
“Hey,” she mumbled, her voice cracking, “Great job tonight, my love,”
He shut his eyes, feeling like a weight collapsed on his chest. “Thank you, beautiful,” he let out, his voice scratchy. It was silent for a few seconds, “I fucking miss you,” he let out, a sob climbing in his throat.
“This is harder than we thought, huh?” she let out, clearly crying. He swallowed hard as he pressed his lips together.
“Request off the weekend before Halloween, please,” he begged, “I need to see you,” he continued. She swallowed hard as she hummed.
After a couple minutes, the conversation wasn’t filled with sadness as they chatted about the game. “It’s going to take a while to get used to,” he let out, a chuckle leaving his throat. She hummed breathily.
He was laying in bed, staring towards the ceiling, biting his bottom lip as he began to remember the last morning of them together. The feeling of her lips on his skin, her breathy moans in his ear. He craved her, he needed her yet she was so far away.
“Hey,” he let out barely above a whisper, tilting his head back.
“Yeah?” she let out, a smile forming to her lips.
“You alone?” he asked. She let out a soft giggle.
~Feb~
The broadcast team announced that Luke would not be returning to the game due to a lower body injury. She was pacing back and forth, Penelope trying to calm her down. It was no use. It was probably precautionary because got off the ice on his own accord but right now all she can think about is that he was out for the remainder of the season. He was going to be in a bad mood all of the time now.
It was his rookie year, she understood that he was stressed, allowing him to have those days. He needed those days to fully process everything he was going through. The game was slowly coming to an end, a loss for the Devils. It seemed like that was becoming more and more common this season.
“He’s probably fine,” Penelope offered again, her jaw clenched hard as she spoke. Remaining on the couch, she continued to watch Y/N pace back and forth.
“Please don’t-” she mumbled before her phone began to vibrate in her pocket, it was Luke. She pulled the phone to her ear, “Baby?” she questioned as she wandered towards her bedroom, away from Penelope.
“Hey, my love, I’m alright.” he began, he took in a sharp breath, “It looked worse than it is,” he explained. He sounded out of breath but he was probably walking back towards his car. He had driven seperate from Jack.
“Are you sure? You’re walking okay?” she questioned as she ran her hand across her mouth.
He hummed, “They gave me the option if I wanted to go back but I’d rather take the rest of the period off and rest for the next roadie,” he explained. She tilted her head back, letting out a long drawn out breath, “I promise I’m all good, We’ll watch a movie later, okay?”
They were starting to do that most nights, use Teleparty to watch movies together and just enjoy each other’s presence. It helps a lot with their relationship. They rarely talk but it helps them.
“Yeah, yeah, miss your face,” she muttered as she let out a dry chuckle.
A wide smile formed on his lips as he dropped in his driver seat of his car. He tilted his head back. “God, I miss you,” he mumbled as he clenched his jaw. “When’s your spring break?” he asked as he connected his phone to bluetooth. He buckled his seatbelt.
“March seventeeth to March twenty-fourth,” she mumbled, a small smile on her lips.
While pulling out of his parking spot, “I’ll book your flight, you’re visiting,” he said with a smile as he waited at the red light. She giggled, it was like music to his ears. “And don’t pull the whole, I got to work because I’ll send you your paycheck to make up for it,” he said with a small chuckle.
“Luke, don’t even think about it,” she said while laughing, she collapsed down onto her bed, staring towards the ceiling. “But that was the plan, of course,” she expressed.
“Good because the second I get home, I’m booking you a first class flight,” he explained as he continued driving, the smile on his lips never wavering.
“Okay, my love, call me when you get back home,” she mumbled as she kept her gaze on the ceiling fan.
“I will, find a movie for us,” he let out as he hung up the phone.
After another thirty minutes, Luke was sprailed out on his bed, shirtless as he propped up his laptop beside him. His hair was wet across his forehead as he took a cold shower once he got home.
He heard a knock on his door as Jack pushed open the door, “Hey man how’s that-oh,” he let out as he stared towards Luke’s appearance and his laptop, “Am I interrupting anything,” he trailed off. Luke chuckled nervously, squinting his eyes slightly. His cheeks flushed red.
“No, she’s not even on FaceTime yet,” Luke mumbled, chuckling. He rolled onto his back to meet Jack’s gaze. Jack nodded slowly, a smirk forming on his lips. “What do you want?” Luke asked with a smirk on his lips.
“You seem like you’re in a good mood,” Jack crossed his arms over his chest, still smirking. Luke nodded.
“My girlfriend is coming to visit in three weeks for the whole week,” he sing songed, Jack’s mouth fell open as he smacked his hand against Luke’s shoulder.
“That’s great! You need to see her,” Jack mumbled, “How’s that knee?” he crossed his arms over his chest again. Luke shrugged as Y/N began calling him.
“Hurts, but it’s just a strain, it’ll be fine,” he said. He brought his finger to his lips as he answered the phone. He didn’t need her to know that it was a bit worse than he told her. Jack shook his head as he walked out of the room, shutting the door.
~April 3rd, 2024~
It was the most anticipated game in the hockey world for a few days now. It was late in the third and the Devils were down by a goal. Luke had practically played the entire game, over thirty minutes in ice time. He was exhausted. He was frustrated. All she wanted to do was to give him a hug and cuddle him.
Luke skates with the puck, sluggish and tired. He was pushing through it the best he could. She covered her mouth with her hands as he wrists a shot towards the net, the game ended a few seconds later. He skates towards the bench with the rest of his teammates behind him.
Penelope wasn’t there to watch the game with her tonight, which was probably for the best. She had a feeling it would be a while till he called her. She shot up from her couch and began to walk towards her bathroom.
She walked through the airport, searching for Luke. He was standing beside a girl, forcing a smile on his lips as they took a photo. She thanked him quickly before she quickly walked away from him. Luke dropped his head, laughing nervously.
Y/N continued manuvering through the crowd of people. His eyes widened once he spotted her. It only took a few more steps before she let go of her suitcase and jumped into his arms.
Her arms wrapped tightly around his neck as her cheeks pressed against his cheek. He wrapped his arms around the center of her back. Her eyes shut tightly as she felt her chest tighten.
“I love you,” she mumbled as ran her fingers through the ends of his hair. It was longer than the last time she saw it.
“I get you the whole week, how lucky am I?” he muttered into her ear as she slowly slipped down his body. Her hands glided from the back of his neck, towards his cheeks. She rested her hands on his cheek as she scanned his flushed features. He leaned towards her, kissing her urgently, not afraid of any wandering eyes or cameras that could catch the moment.
He needed her to be as close as possible. His hands tightened on her waist, pulling her body towards him, “Come on, Baby girl, we’ve got the apartment to ourselves for a couple hours,” he whispered against her lips.
She finished showering, putting on a tanktop and a pair of shorts as she began to clean up her bedroom. She was wandering around her room, picking up random ideas to organize the place.
After a few minutes, she received a FaceTime call from Luke. She quickly sat down on her bed, answering the call instantly. She brushed a wet piece of hair away from her face as she stared towards Luke. He was showered as well, laying on his bed. His head was tilted back against the headrest.
His eyes were evidently scanning her face on his screen. He clenched his jaw as he took in a sharp breath. He shut his eyes hard as he began tearing up.
“I’m so tired,” he let out, his voice cracking as he spoke. Her lips fell into a pout as she scooted back against the bed. “I don’t know if I can do this,” he let out barely above a whisper. He opened his eyes, as a tear fell onto his cheek.
“Hey, hey, what do you mean?” she asked, furrowing her eyebrows. He shook his head as he pressed his lips together.
“I can’t handle the pressure, it’s too much,” he let out, another tear falling onto his cheek.
“Baby, it was a tough game-”
“It wasn’t just the game though, Can’t open Twitter without seeing everyone hate on me. I can’t do this,” he let out while shaking his head.
Y/N clenched her jaw as she tilted her head to the side. “Luke, it’s just a bad stretch of games. It’s not just on you, you need to take some weight off your shoulders,” she tried to help him.
“I can’t do that, I can’t do anything right,” he said, crying, tilting her head to the side as she met his gaze through the phone screen. “I miss you, I just wish you were in Jersey with me. I can’t handle another year of this,” he groaned out.
“I miss you too, my love. Luke, you are stronger than you think. I love you so much, you will get past this, you will find a way out. You are going to be just fine. The season is almost done, you’ll get a lot of rest. And you’ll see me for months straight to the point you’ll get tired of me,” she said with a sad smile forming on her lips. His lips curled upward slightly, a dry chuckle leaving his throat.
“Not possible, I could never get tired of you,” he said, happy to hear those words, “What if,” he paused as his eyebrows furrowed harshly in thought, “What if I stayed with you for a few days after the season is done?” he asked. Her eyes lit up excitedly.
“What if you stayed until the semester ends?” she asked, a smile on her face.
“Would Penelope be okay with that?” he asked.
“Baby, I think she would rather you be here all the time than hear me cry about missing you another minute,” she said with a wide smile, “And I’m sure the boys would love to see you,” she expressed.
“Then it’s a plan,” he said with a smile, his tears no longer falling. “I love you so much,”
More Hearts Than Mine-Their Families Find out They are Moving in Together
~More Hearts Than Mine by Ingrid Andress~
Author's Note: N/A Summary: Luke and Y/N move in together Warnings: Swearing, Implied Smut Word Count: 2,078 Luke Hughes x fm!reader
Tumblr media
Luke knocked on Jack’s door, waiting for him to be granted entrance. A dramatic groan left Jack’s lips, allowing Luke to walk inside the bedroom. “So,” Luke started unsure of how to fully say what he wanted to say.
Living with his brother has been amazing, except he’s practically lived with Y/N the entire time he’s been in Jersey. He thought that now it would be time to make things official. He was added to the lease and they were planning on starting the move later this week. He has yet to tell anyone in his family about the whole idea.
He wants to avoid talking to Quinn about it since he’s so dramatically focused on the whole it’s your rookie year don’t get distracted, a girlfriend right now probably isn’t the best idea. So telling Quinn that he was planning on living with said girlfriend, would probably cause him to implode.
Jack, on the other hand, adores Y/N. He loved the idea of living with his brother but he also loves the idea of his little brother being happy.
“So spit it out,” he muttered, lifting his gaze from his computer.
“Uhm, I’m moving in with Y/N this Friday,” he said, waiting for his brother’s reaction.
“That’s great, I mean you practically live there anyway,” he mumbled, shutting his computer screen. Jack’s eyes widened, “Did you tell Mom and Dad? Quinn?” he questioned. Luke shook his head. “Good luck with that,” he mumbled before opening up his laptop.
Luke stared towards Jack expectedly, waiting for him to say something about his objections. It never came. “Who’s going to be easier to tell?”
“Definitely Mom and Dad, they adore Y/N,” he explained. Luke nodded nervously. “You could also wait to tell Quinn until after the season is done. You know how he gets,” Jack said, meeting Luke’s gaze. Luke nodded as he pressed his lips together.
Luke sighed as he left Jack’s room and walked towards his room, the room that was now returning to a guest bedroom. He flopped down onto his bed as he pulled open his laptop. He began to FaceTime his Mom, hoping his Dad would be there too. Not wanting to have this conversation more than once.
It wasn’t really a conversation. It was more him letting them know what the plan was. It only rang twice before his mom answered. His dad was sitting beside her with a wide smile. “Hey honey,” his mom said as she answered the video call.
“Hey guys, I wanted to tell you guys something,” he said nervously rubbing his hands together. Their faces both fell as his dad’s eyes widened.
“Y/N’s not pregnant is she?” his dad questioned. Ellen’s eyes widened as her mouth fell open.
Luke shook his head dramatically, “What? No! No! Dad, I’m not stupid,” Luke said, letting out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. Both of his parents let out a sigh of relief. “I am moving in with Y/N though,” he said biting his bottom lip nervously.
They nodded slowly, “So it’s been decided then?” his mom questioned. Luke nodded. “Are you sure, Lukey? I mean you guys are fighting for a playoff spot. It’s your rookie year, it’s a lot to handle right now,” she expressed.
Luke nodded, prepared to hear those words from Quinn, not from his mom. But in hindsight, he should’ve expected it. He looked towards the ceiling as he clenched his jaw.
“I mean, I practically live there anyway,” he began pouting his lip, “I mean, the only time I’m back at Jack’s is when we have to travel for games. I’m never there, I’d rather have all of my stuff at Y/N’s since I’m always there,” he explained.
“Son, it may seem like it won’t be different but it will. Once all of your stuff is there, it’ll be different,”
“Good!” Luke expressed, a smile forming to his lips, “She’s-” he paused as he shook his head, “She’s the one, Dad, what’s the harm in starting the forever process now?” he asked. Ellen tilted her head back as she began to tear up.
Jim nodded as he smiled slightly, “Alright, I can’t wait to see what you guys do with her apartment,” he said. Luke nodded his head as fought the smile on his lips.
“Don’t tell Quinn anything yet, he’s just going to get pissed,” he asked and they nodded. They spoke for a few minutes longer before he hung up.
~~~
She sat on her bed, staring at her computer screen. She needed to tell her parents, she needed to tell them that in less than forty-eight hours her boyfriend would be moving in. Her dad may explode at the idea and she was terrified. Luke had texted her that he told his family and they approved. She quickly pressed the FaceTime button and waited for her mom to answer the phone.
She messed with the end of her t-shirt as she waited for them to answer. After a handful of rings, her mom answered. Her dad was sitting beside her. “Hey sweet pea!” she answered excitedly. Y/N smiled nervously as he stared towards her parents through the video screen. “Oh what’s wrong?” her mother asked, her face falling instantly.
“You’re not pregnant are you?” her dad questioned. Her mouth fell open as she shook her head dramatically.
“Are you crazy!?” she asked as she took in a sharp breath. “You really think I would tell you that over FaceTime? I’m barely twenty!” she let out. They nodded, sighing.
“What’s going on sweetheart?” her mom pressed.
Y/N took in a deep breath as she smiled softly, “I asked Luke to move in,” she muttered. Her mom’s eyes lit up with so much joy but her dad remained stoic as he furrowed his eyebrows harshly. “He’s moving in Friday,” she mumbled.
“Oh wonderful, honey! That’s so exciting!” her mother expressed, her dad remained silent. Her mother nudged him slightly, practically begging him to say something. Instead he stood up and walked away from the couch, out of the view of the camera.
Her mother’s face fell as she stared towards her husband walking away. Y/N’s eyes began to tear up as she watched him walk away. She clenched her fists and unclenched them as she looked towards her mom through the camera.
“Sweetie, its just a lot for him,” she paused as she saw him take a glass and began to pour himself some whiskey.
“No,” her dad let out grumply, “It’s too soon,” he continued, swallowing the whole glass in one swig.
“Honey, they’ve been together almost a year, that’s a long-”
“We didn’t move in together until after we got married,” he said, pouring more into the glass.
Y/N fought the tears filling her eyes, hearing her father’s harsh tone. “And how many years ago was that? Your daughter is in love, she wants to take the next step. Stop being an ass and be happy for her,” her mother defended.
“She’s my little girl!” he shouted back. Her mother tilted her head back.
“I thought you liked Luke,” Y/N mumbled, her voice cracking. Her mother tilted her head to the side, raising her eyebrows towards her husband. Y/N could hear her father take a sharp breath.
“I like the kid, Y/N, I don’t think you too should be living together. It’s too soon,” her dad said one final time before he stomped out of the kitchen and living area.
Y/N sniffled as she wiped a tear that fell on her cheek. Her mother looked back towards her, frowning slightly. “What do I do?” Y/N asked, a sob climbing her throat.
“You-” her mother paused, smiling kindly, “You two should move in together. Live in bliss, I’ll work on getting your father up to speed.” Y/N nodded as she met her mother’s gaze through the computer screen. “It’ll be alright, my dear, I love you. I’m going to go talk to him,” she winked towards her.
The doorbell rang throughout her apartment before it was being pushed open, “That’s Luke, I gotta go,” she mumbled before ending the call with her mom. She shut her laptop as she stood up from the bed.
She pushed open the bedroom door to see Luke walking down the hall. He had a smile on his lips, it quickly faltered into a frown as he saw her teary expression.  “Hey, hey, hey, what’s wrong?” he asked as he quickened his pace. He engulfed her in a hug. Running his hands up and down her back as she cried into his chest.
“My dad freaked out about us living together,” she muttered into his chest. He clenched his as he shut his eyes.
“Oh baby, I’m so sorry,” he mumbled as he rocked her side to side slowly. She shook her head as she lifted her head from his chest. She met his gaze.
“Don’t be, we’re going to do it,” she said, a sad smile forming on her lips. “I don’t need his approval,” she mumbled. Luke tilted his head to the side before he brushed a piece of hair away from her face.
“Yes, yes you do. My love, I know how much your dad’s opinion matters to you,” he let out as he scanned her features. She clenched her jaw, “If he’s not ready-”
“I’m ready, I’m ready for this,” she delicately hit her hands against his chest. “He’ll come around, I need this to happen. I need to wake up to you every morning. I need to know that this is for real. I can’t know that until we live together,” she expressed. He nodded as he pulled her towards him again, hugging her tightly.
“Okay, my love. We’ll do it,” he muttered, pressing his lips to the top of her head. She hummed against his chest. “Wanna hear something funny?” he asked, wanting to lighten the mood. She hummed again, “My dad asked if you were pregnant,” he said. She pulled away, her mouth agaped, his eyes widened teasingly.
“My dad asked the same thing!” she said. His mouth fell open.
“No way,” he said while laughing.
~Friday~
Jack dropped the last box into the living room and let out a heavy sigh. He stared towards the pair, a soft smile on his lips. “I’ve got two rules for you Lukey,” Jack muttered.
“Here we go,” Luke let out rolling his eyes as he pulled Y/N to his side.
“Rule number one, never be late to anything. I’m not your ride anymore so you better show up on time and don’t make yourself look bad. Rule number two, don’t have unprotected sex; I’m not ready to be an uncle to my younger brother,” he said, a dry chuckle leaving his throat.
Luke nodded as he pressed his lips together fighting the smirk toying to his lips, “Alright, are you done?” Luke asked as he swallowed hard. Jack nodded as he rested his hands onto his hips. “Okay,” he said while nodding slowly.
“Oh,” Jack mumbled as he looked behind him before he met Luke’s gaze again, “You want me to leave?” he asked. Luke nodded encouragingly, “You don’t want me to help you unpack or you know decorate a little bit. I mean your first apartment where you are actually paying for things, I’m just checking to see if you-”
“Jack!” Luke said while he tightened his grip around Y/N’s waist. Jack chuckled as he nodded.
“Fine,” he dragged out as he took a step backwards, “You better be at Morning skate on time, big game tomorrow,” he mumbled as he quickly walked out of the apartment.
Soon, Luke and Y/N we're alone in their apartment. An apartment they share, just them. It was bliss and it was everything they had wanted. Sure, it was her apartment but now it was theirs.  “So what do you want to do first?” she asked, staring towards the collection of boxes scattering their living room.
She met his gaze, his eyebrows were raised as he was fighting off a smirk on his lips. “Oh,” she let out while smirking. “Okay,” she muttered as they leaned towards one another kissing each other with so much intensity. She jumped into his arms as he took a hold of her thighs, guiding her backwards towards their bedroom.

She was laying on her bed, staring towards the movie on the screen. Nessa was rambling on about something that had happened during her study group. In all honesty, Y/N wasn’t listening to a single thing she was saying because her mind was filled with the events that occurred earlier in the night.
She couldn’t get the feeling of his lips on her skin off of her mind. Or the way his hands delicately ran along her skin with so much respect and need at the same time. They didn’t do anything serious, clothes remained on but it was amazing. To the point where she couldn’t stop thinking about it.
“Are you even listening?” Nessa asked while laughing. Y/N blinked multiple times before she shifted her gaze towards Nessa; nodding. “What else is on your mind?” she asked teasingly.
Before she got a chance to answer, there were three knocks on her bedroom door. Y/N jumped from her bed and walked towards the door. Nessa watched her wide eyed as Y/N peeked her eye through the peephole to see Luke standing outside of her door. She fought the smile forming to her lips as she opened the door and slipped outside.
Nessa gasped as she watched Y/N discreetly leave the room. Luke furrowed his eyebrows as he watched her slip out and lean her body against the door. “My roommate is here,” she whispered. He nodded, a small oh leaving his lips.
“So for tomorrow, I’ve got ideas but I need your opinion,” he mumbled as he glanced down the hall. Suddenly aware of the public place they were at. Any one of his teammates could stumble upon them.
“You could’ve texted me that,” she teased as she bit her bottom lip. His mouth opened as his cheeks flushed red as he fought the smirk forming on his lips.
“Well, texting means I don’t get to see you and I wanted to see you,” he muttered as he looked into her eyes, squinting slightly. She smiled as she continued staring into his eyes. “So,” he started as he bounced slightly, “First option is the basic dinner and a movie. You pick the movie, I pick dinner, or the opposite. That’s up to you,” he paused. She nodded encourgingly.
“We could do dinner, dinner is in all of these options by the way, so then we go to dinner and then go to Top Golf,” he let out as he continued to scan her features, “And then the next option is dinner, obviously, and then we go ice skating which I feel is a little on the nose with the whole hockey thing but anyways.” he chuckled nervously.
“And then the last option is dinner and then we go on a drive around town. I didn’t really think that one through as much as the others but I think it could be fun,” he mumbled. “We’ll eventually do all of them I’m sure.”
She smiled towards him, “Let me think it through and I’ll let you know later,” she expressed. He nodded excitedly. She leaned towards him, pecking him on the lips before she slipped right back into her dorm room. Nessa was standing at the door. Y/N stared towards her with her mouth agape. Nessa was staring towards her the same way trying not to giggle.
“When did that happen!?” she asked in a hushed tone. Y/N shuffled away from her and the door as she fought the smile on her lips. “Wait, I thought you didn't get involved with Ethan’s teammates?” she asked quietly as she followed her towards their beds.
“I didn’t until that one kept looking at me with his eyes and his tallness and his curly hair and his smile and I am in trouble aren’t I?” she rambled on as she collapsed on her bed. Nessa laughed as she sat down on her bed.
“Oh my god, tell me everything,” Nessa begged. A groan left Y/N throat as she held her pillow against her face.
~~~
It was the next evening and she was waiting for Luke to knock on her door. She was pacing back and forth, trying to decide if her outfit was perfect enough for her dinner and Top Golf date. She wanted to be casual but cute. She didn’t want to wear anything too tight.
“It’s perfect, stop freaking out!” Nessa let out while excitedly kicking her feet back and forth off her bed. Y/N sighed as she stood still, glancing into the mirror once more. “He’ll think you’re so sexy and hot and-” she was interrupted as three knocks hit their dorm door. Y/N’s eyes widened as she met Nessa’s gaze. “Deep breath,” Nessa mumbled as Y/N took a hold of her purse before walking towards the door.
She took a deep breath as she pulled the door open expecting Luke, but Ethan was standing at her door instead. Her eyes widened as she saw him, “Ethan, what are-why are you here?” she asked, Ethan scanned her frame. His face scrunched together.
“Where are you going?” he asked. Her mouth fell open but she shut it quickly while shaking her head slightly.
“None of your business, what are you doing here?” she asked as she leaned her body against the door frame.
“I wanted to see if you wanted to go out with the guys and I but it seems like you’re going on a date,” he said with a teasing smile.
“No, I’m just going out,” she said confidently. He nodded with a smirk before he took a step backwards.
“Have fun, not too much fun. I’m not ready to be an uncle,” he teased walking down the hallway. He walked back towards the elevator. The doors opened quickly and he stepped on. Y/N still leaned against the doorway to see Luke round the corner with his eyes widened. She smiled widely as her cheeks heated up.
He was wearing his baseball hat backwards with a simple black long sleeve with dark wash jeans. “Gotta go,” she muttered towards Nessa before she shut the door behind her. “Hey,” she let out as she walked towards him.
“Hey, that was a close one,” he mumbled. She nodded dramatically as they met up near the elevator to wait for its arrival.
“Yeah, I’m not ready for him to know about anything,” she said nervously. He nodded as he shoved his hands into his pocket.
“Yeah, I want him to at least get to know me before he realizes I’m taking his sister out on a date,” he muttered as the doors swung open. She chuckled nervously as they entered the elevator.
“Oh for sure,” she let out while meeting his gaze.
“I walked out of my room and saw him at your door and I spun around so fast,” he explained while laughing.
“That would ‘ve been one awkward conversation,” she mumbled. He laughed as he dropped his gaze to the floor.
~~~
The dinner was going great, conversation was flowing beautifully. He was the most perfect gentleman. “So if the Devils called you tomorrow, would you go?” she asked before she took a bite of the chocolate cake they were sharing.
He thought about the question, there wasn’t many reasons why he wouldn’t go. He loved Michigan, he loved the team. He hated school but it’s always good to get some education before jumping into the league.
He tilted his head to the side, fighting a smile on his lips, “I think I can’t say no if they’d ask,” he said thoughtfully. “It won’t be for a few years though,” he muttered before he took a huge bit of the cake. She giggled.
“You don’t know that,” she said, raising her eyebrows, he shrugged shyly.
“What about you? What are your plans after graduation?” he asked, meeting her gaze. She shrugged, frowning slightly.
“I have no idea, I’m an undecided major right now. Testing the waters on some things,” she expressed. He nodded, “I love kids, so maybe teaching. I don’t know yet,” she continued. He listened intently, loving the sound of her voice.
“You’ve got a lot of time to figure it out,” he expressed as the waiter dropped the bill onto the table. Before she had a chance to reach over to it, Luke was already placing his card down. He chuckled watching her squirm and put her hand back into her lap. “You didn’t think you were paying did you?”
“I picked the restaurant,” she said nervously. He smiled softly.
“I wanted you to pick a place you were comfortable,” he muttered as he ran his hand over his chin, “Also you’re never paying when I’m around,” he said with his eyebrows raised. She smiled shyly.
“What if Ethan’s with us?” she asked teasingly. His mouth opened and shut a few times before he chuckled.
“Touche, but I’ll still find a way,” he said with a smile.
It was a little while later and Luke was driving them to the Top Golf place a few miles away from the restaurant they were at. He was playing soft country music as they rode in silence for most of the ride.
It was soft and easy. The only thing that was bothering her was the fact that he hasn’t touched her yet. Despite yesterday and how touchy he was then. Just as the thought entered her mind, he reached over and took a hold of her thigh, rubbing his thumb across the fabric of her jeans. She tried to contain her excitement as the soft gesture meant a lot more than he probably thought it did.
Although, he was freaking out too. He was trying to decide when the best moment was to make a move. It was subtle, and to him, she barely reacted to it.
They climbed out of the car, Luke quickly jogging towards her side of the car to open the door for her. “Thank you,” she muttered as she met his gaze for a few seconds before he rested his hand onto her lower back. He guided her towards the entrance of the facility.
After around ten minutes they were ready to go. He went first, to show her how it was done. He looked back towards her with a smirk and she nodded before she stepped up. Awkwardly trying to figure out how to hold it.
“What are you doing?” Luke asked while holding back a chuckle. She turned her head towards him as she was trying not to laugh.
“How do you hold this thing?” she asked, pouting slightly. He laughed as he walked towards her.
“You wanted to do Top Golf and you don’t know how to hold a golf club?” he asked as he walked towards her, standing beside her, delicately adjusting her arms and hands to hold it correctly.
“I don’t know how to skate either,” she mumbled as she met his eyes for a brief second.
“Your brother plays D1 hockey and is drafted to the NHL and you don’t know how to skate?! How does that happen?” he asked while shaking his head. He stepped away from her while crossing his arms over her chest.
“I played volleyball in school,” she said simply while chuckling before she swung and hit the ball very pathetically. She looked towards him, frowning slightly. He pursed his lips forward trying not to laugh.
“Don’t laugh at me,” she said as she walked towards him, setting her club up against the chair before she looked towards his gaze again. He smiled as he scanned her features.
“Not laughing,” he muttered while shaking his head, he pouted his lips forward to stop the smile forming on his lips. He lowered his gaze towards her glossed lips for a brief second before he met her gaze one more time.
“You’re literally laughing,” she said with a pout still on her lips. He took a hold of her hip and pulled her towards him, he kissed her urgently. He’s been trying to find a moment where he could kiss her.
He missed the feeling of her lips on his since yesterday. It’s all that he’s been thinking about since. She smiled into the kiss as she rested her hand onto his chest. “This has been so fun,” she mumbled against his lips as his phone rang in his pocket.
“Sorry,” he mumbled as he pulled his phone from his pocket. Ethan was calling him. He looked towards her panickedly. She shoved him softly, encouraging him to answer it. He cleared his throat before he pulled it to his ear. “Hey man,” he said, smiling awkwardly towards Y/N.
“Some of the guys are going to the bars tonight, you in?” Ethan asked. Luke tilted his head back, muttering a few curse words before he met her gaze.
“Not tonight, I’m out on a drive right now,”
“Oh come on, don’t be lame,” Ethan countered. Luke’s eyes widened as he took a deep breath.
“I-uhm, I don’t really feel like it tonight, what about tomorrow?”
“Alright, I’ll hold you to that Hughesy,” he mumbled before he hung up the phone. Luke slowly pulled the phone from his ear as he looked deeply into her eyes.
“Are we going to lie to him forever?” he asked, swallowing hard.
“I don’t know,” she muttered as she delicately shoved him forward to continue his turn. She glanced down towards her phone to see a text from her brother.
E: Bars tomorrow? Nessa can come too.
She stared towards the text, her heart beating rapidly.

Ethan was laying on his bed typing up his essay on his computer. Luke was sitting on the bean bag reading through his textbook and highlighting things that he thought were important. They were working on assignments for their shared history class.
It was a class that practically had free will and attendance points. You could finish all of the assignments whenever you wanted to get it done, but you had to attend the lectures. They were listening to soft country music as they quietly worked.
Luke lifted his gaze towards the door as it was knocked on four times in an inconsistent cadence. “Come in!” Ethan shouted.
“You don’t know who it-” Luke let out panickedly, he stopped short when Y/N entered. She was wearing a UMich sweater and had a pair of dark wash jeans. Meeting Luke’s gaze she smiled towards him as she took a hold of the other bean bag on the floor and dragged it towards him. She dropped down beside him, bumping her leg against his on purpose.
She sat alone in the dining hall, taking small bites of the rice and dry chicken that was on her plate. She kept her gaze on her phone screen as she was watching the TikToks on her screen. Lifting her gaze at the sound of glass hitting the table, she saw Luke sitting down in front of her. She nervously met his gaze, taking an Airpod out of her ear.
“You looked lonely,” he muttered, a smirk toying to his lips.
“I was fine,” she said with a smile on her lips as she pushed some rice back and forth on her plate. She glanced towards his plate, noticing the exact same meal on his plate. “Sure, you weren’t the lonely one?” she asked, raising her eyebrows as a small smile formed to her lips.
He chuckled shyly, keeping his gaze on his plate as he brought a fork full of food to his mouth. “Never,” he said with a mouthful. She rolled her eyes dramatically. He swallowed his food before he spoke again, “Ethan saw you, he’s on his way over with a few of the other guys,” he mumbled as he met her gaze.
His eyes softened as he continued admiring her features. It was hard to ignore how beautiful she was, especially since she was his teammate's sister. Utterly off limits. He knows the rules, but she was the most gorgeous girl he’s ever seen.
Ethan sat down beside her, nudging her arm slightly, forcing her to move down further.
She watched Luke subtly. He was kind and pretty. He was the definition of a pretty boy. His smile was always so genuine. But he was off limits, her brother’s teammate. It was a rule he had imposed back in middle school. He had found out she had a crush on his teammate and he had made the rule right then and there.
She never gave one of his teammates a second look, until Luke.
“What are you doing?” Ethan asked as he watched her sit down beside Luke. She shrugged as she pulled her laptop out of the bag she brought and opened it.
“I kept getting distracted, I need to work with people,” she muttered, meeting Luke’s gaze. She felt her cheeks heat up before she looked back towards the blank Word document. Luke clenched his jaw as he pressed his lips together, keeping his gaze on the textbook in front of him.
He wasn’t understanding a single word he was looking at, because his mind was preoccupied with Y/N.
He’s never had a crush so intense before. He barely knows her but he can’t stop thinking about her or the fact that she smiles all the time when he’s around. He can’t tell if it’s him or if that’s who she is.
“Okay, well I have a date to get ready for in like thirty minutes so I have to kick you guys out then,” Ethan said with a long drawn out breath. Y/N eyes widened as she shifted her gaze towards Ethan who was laying on his bed with his computer close to his face.
“Date?” she asked excitedly.
“Not a big deal,” he mumbled. Y/N looked towards Luke, he was already staring towards him. “He doesn’t know anything, so don’t ask,” Ethan let out as he was typing on his computer quickly.
She reluctantly let it go as she continued working on her assignment for her English class, quietly. Every few seconds she would look towards Luke, meeting his gaze as if they were having a secret conversation. She was unsure of what they were trying to say, but she was content with his presence beside her.
The thirty minutes went by quickly and she managed to actually get work done. “Alright, I need you guys to head out,” Ethan let out as he dropped his computer beside him as he began climbing off of his bed.
Luke and Y/N quickly packed up their stuff, wishing Ethan luck on his date before they left the room. Ethan shut the door behind them, as they awkwardly stared towards one another.
“My-uh-my-” she stumbled over her words as she smiled softly as she met his gaze, “My roommate is gone for the afternoon if you want to come over and finish working on stuff,” she offered as she scanned his features. His eyes widened slightly as he nodded.
“That’d be great,” he mumbled as they walked towards the elevator.
Luke stared towards his phone at her profile. It wouldn’t be entirely weird if he requested to follow her account. They met twice in person, she knows him. They were going to be seeing each other a lot, especially with how close her and Ethan were.
It would probably look like she was found in his mutals page, instead of him searching her up through Ethan’s page.
He was ignoring the movie that was loudly barely beside him on his laptop, as he kept staring at the Instagram profile. Her picture was a photo of her tilting her head back as she was laughing, it was gorgeous. He pressed the follow button quickly as he dropped his phone beside him. She had to approve the following request. That was scary.
He shifted his gaze to the laptop screen, only hearing the sound of his heart beating loudly in his ears as he clenched his jaw tightly.
He checked his phone after a full minute to see if she accepted his follow request and she did. She accepted it so fast and she followed him back. He smiled widely as he began to scroll through her photos. There were only four and three of them were from two years ago.
The most recent picture was a photo collection of her first few weeks at college. Many of them were photos with her and Ethan as well as Nessa. The last photo she included was a selfie Ethan took of them at dinner three nights previous. Luke was in the background, smiling widely.
She felt that the photo was so important she added it to the small six photo collection. He was overthinking it, but he was completely okay with it.
They stepped inside the elevator and stood in awkward silence. “I’ve got a question,” he let out as he clenched his jaw, he tilted his head to the side to look over her features. She nodded slightly as her gaze lowered towards his lips but they quickly shot back up towards his eyes.
He continued to look over her features, admiring each and every inch of her face. His question completely slipped his mind as the elevator doors opened to their floor. They stepped off and began walking towards her room.
“You had a question?” she offered as they continued down the hall towards her room, side by side. Their arms brushing against each other. He nodded as he rubbed his nose nervously with his hand.
“Right, uh-have you been close with Ethan’s teammates before? Like were you friends with any of them,” it wasn’t the question he originally had in mind but he was content with asking it.
Stopping in front of her door, she dug her keys out of her pocket, “Not really,” she said as she avoided his gaze, pushing her dorm room door open, “He tends to shut down any chance of me being friends with them fast. He doesn’t want any of his teammates to try and date me or whatever,” she mumbled, meeting his gaze as she walked backwards towards her bed. He nodded as he kept eye contact with her.
“Which ruins any chance of being friends with them because I usually am never interested in any of his teammates like that,” she said as she shyly looked away from Luke. She placed her backpack beside her side table as she climbed onto her bed. Luke smiles softly as he dropped his bag beside her before he sat down beside her. Purposely making their legs touch.
“You said, usually never interested,” he repeated as he swallowed hard. She turned her head to meet his gaze, his eyes were urgently scanning her features. Trying to find any sign of what he was thinking. “So are you interested now?” he questioned, his chest aching as his skin felt hot and tingly.
She looked deeply into his eyes as her lips curled upward slightly, “I don’t know,” she let out before giving it another thought. He hummed as he nodded. “I could be,” she mumbled.
He thought about leaning towards her, kissing her, but Ethan’s voice rang in his head. Don’t even fucking think about it. Well, here he was thinking about it and mere inches away from making a move. Luke clenched his jaw as he very reluctantly pulled his head back. He cleared his throat as he leaned back on his hands slightly as he scanned her dejected frame.
She tilted her head back, meeting his gaze. Her skin felt hot as her stomach was filled with butterflies. He looked at her in a way no man ever has. Like she was the only girl that mattered.
“You know, my brother doesn’t have a say in who I can be interested in,” she mumbled as she took a hold of both their backpacks. She dropped his bag into his lap as she began unzipping her own, “If I want someone, he doesn’t get to put a stop to it before I even have a chance to explore it,” she explained, resting her laptop on her thighs. Luke hummed as he dropped his bag to the floor once more.
She lifted her gaze from her computer. He smiled a tight lip smile towards her as he took a hold of her computer. He shut it and delicately placed it onto the table beside her bed. “What are you-” she questioned but he interrupted by delicately kissing her. He took a careful hold of her chin, letting her create the pace that she wanted.
She leaned into the kiss more, as the hesitation faded away. He slowly slid back on the bed, leaning his body against the wall as she climbed onto his lap. Straddling his body, she rested her hands on the base of his neck. Her eyes scanned his features, his eyes were intoxicating as he tilted his head back against the wall, looking towards her at an angle slightly.
His hands were slowly gliding up and down the backs of her thighs, careful on the placement to not scare her. She leaned towards him, kissing him with a little more urgency as their tongues moved together insync.
His hands would tightend on her legs as she would run her fingers through the ends of his curly hair.
She pulled away as she ran a manicured thumb across his bottom lip, “You’re a good kisser,” she whispered as she met his gaze. He smiled shyly before he leaned his head back against the wall, clenching his jaw. “What’s wrong?” she asked as she ran her thumb across his jawline.
“You’re brother’s gonna kill me,” he whispered before he leaned towards her, kissing her with the same sense of urgency. He began moving beneath her, delicately guiding her to lay on her back, on the bed. Their lips remained connected as he climbed on top of her, taking a hold of one of her thighs.
“Luke,” she let out as she ran her fingers through his hair, he hummed against her lips. “The door’s not locked,” she whispered against his lips. He pecked her lips a few times before he climbed off the bed walking towards the door of her dorm. He stared at the lock for a moment.
He turned the lock before he spun around, a smirk toying to his lips as he walked towards the bed, climbing on top of her. He scanned her features before he leaned down and kissed her once more. “Are you free tomorrow night?” he asked between kisses. She nodded as he pulled his head back slightly. “Good, we’re going on a date,” he mumbled before he pecked her lips.
“Oh, are we?” she asked as he nodded dramatically while scrunching his features together slightly. “What are we going to do?” she questioned as she rested her hand on the base of his neck.
“I am more focused on kissing you right now,” he mumbled, kissing her deeply before he pulled away again, “It’ll be fun, I can promise you that,” he expressed again before planting his lips on hers again.

Hey
~Hey by Pixies~
Author's Note: this is lowkey my own version of that scene between Barney and Robin in HIMYM. My fav show of all time. So enjoy this recreation of it :) The song is the song that played during that scene. As always italitcs are flashbacks Summary: Alex returns to Denver for the first time since being traded Warnings: swearing, implied smut Word Count: 1,787 Alex Newhook x fm!reader
Tumblr media
“I can’t leave Denver, Alex,” she muttered while she wiped a tear that fell onto her cheek. She looked into his dark brown eyes, they were watery but he refused to cry. He couldn’t. It was too overwhelming and confusing.
He was leaving the team he won the Stanley Cup with. He’s leaving his best friend, he’s leaving his girlfriend of three years. He’s leaving the town he’s fallen in love with.
The rumors of the trade were circulating the locker room, he remained optimistic that he would have a positive outcome from it. Whether that is he’s traded away to a team that treats him right or he stays in Denver. But he was in fact leaving, going to Montreal. A young team, full of potential. He was ecstatic.
Except when Y/N heard the news she broke down. She was successful in Denver, a full-time job that would be difficult to get anywhere else.
“But you don’t need a job, I can prov-”
“I need to be independent, Alex. I cannot imagine just following you wherever you go. Alex, I can’t follow you to Montreal,” she mumbled standing up from the couch and walking towards the front door.
“Y/N. Y/N!” he let out urgently as he followed her movements. She spun around and met his gaze. His eyes became more teary eyed. “What does that mean?” he asked in a hushed tone.
She pressed her lips together as she dropped her gaze towards the floor. “I love you, I love you with everything that I have, Alex. But I can’t follow you to Montreal,” she muttered as she wiped another tear that fell on her cheek. “I have a life that I love in Denver. I grew up here, everything I love is here,” she explained.
He looked into her eyes as he nodded slowly. His heart shattered in that moment. He was going to a team that cared about him, wanted him so badly. But all he cared about in that moment was that the woman he loved was not going with him.
The season was not going as Alex expected. He was injured for the majority of it and was feeling incredibly low. The fans were overwhelmingly supportive over the whole process. He was feeling at home with his new team. He was actively taking French lessons to try and become more accustomed to Montreal.
He was getting along great with his new teammates, he was happy. He was also happy because Y/N and him were still friends. Despite ending their relationship, they remained friends.
At first it was awkward, only keeping their friendship over text but it was still close. Now they talk almost every day, she was his rock during his recovery. And now he was in Denver for two days.
She was sitting on her couch, her gaze watching Alex fall into the boards hard. A gasp left her lips as she covered her mouth with her hands. He was slow to get up, but was able to get off the ice on his own. He went straight down the tunnel.
She began texting with Kailey, Bo Byram’s girlfriend and her closest friend. She was frantically typing about how nasty the injury looked on Alex. It was a long intermission, waiting to see if Alex would return but it was hard to tell.
Kailey had called her, the Avalanche game was just starting in Arizona. “I saw the clip on Twitter, that didn’t look good,” Kailey mumbled.
“I know it was tough, but he hasn’t been ruled out,” Y/N explained as she watched the intermission report draw to a close.
“I’m sure it was just scary, easier to get checked out than to force it,” Kailey reassured as she let out a dramatic groan, probably about something that was happening during Bo’s game.
“Yeah, yeah, totally,” she mumbled.
“So, are you sure you and Alex aren’t doing long distance, seems like you guys are still super close,” she pressured, a smirk evident on her lips. Y/N rolled her eyes playfully as she watched the ice fade into view. The broadcast zooms in on Alex skating on the ice, to start the game.
“He’s on the ice,” she mumbled into the phone, a sigh of relief leaving her body as she smiled towards the screen. “I gotta go, call me later,” she mumbled before she hung up the phone and rested it beside her.
The game starts and only twenty seconds in, Alex is shoved and falls awkwardly into the net, his foot getting entangled with the net. She gasps as she watches him try to get up, but finding it impossible to put any pressure on his ankle.
The ref calls the play dead, she gasps as she watches him get assistance from his teammates to stand. He skates towards the bench with help, unable to put pressure on his other ankle.
It had been forty minutes since the game ended, Alex unable to return to the game. She calls him, needing to hear his voice. After seven rings, she nearly ended the call before he answered.
“How bad is it?” she asked as soon as he answered. He chuckled dryly.
“Not looking good,” he mumbled as he took a sharp breath, “Definitely out for a while,” he mumbled, sadly.
“Oh Alex, I’m so sorry,” she muttered as she tilted her head back. He stayed silent. “Al?” she let out. He hummed. “Whatcha thinking?” she asked.
“I’m frustrated,” he mumbled, “Finally have a place where I can say I can actually make an impact and I’m out for like the whole season,”
“You don’t know that,”
“Two months at least,” he let out, groaning. “So you were watching?” he asked, changing the subject. She smiled as she tilted her head back.
“Haven’t missed a game yet,” she mumbled.
He let out a huff of air as he smiled widely, “No?” and she hummed as a reply. “Well, you’re gonna have to watch the games even though I’m not playing,” he let out.
Tonight was the first night he was coming back to Denver. He was nervous especially since his best friend, Bo, wasn’t playing for the Avalanche anymore either. He was laying in his hotel, unsure if he was allowed to call and ask to see Y/N.
The boys were supposed to be on lockdown and rest inside their hotel rooms, alone. But he had to see her. He pulled his phone towards his ear, the phone rang a handful of times before she answered.
“Welcome back to Denver,” she said teasingly. He chuckled as he bit his bottom lip.
“Go to dinner with me,” he requested, in more of a demand. She furrowed her eyebrows harshly. “Meet me at our restaurant in an hour?” he asked.
She needed to say no, this whole being friends was easy with phone calls and texting. She wasn’t sure how she was going to act if she saw him in person. It’s been nearly a year since they’ve broken up and she hasn’t even thought about being involved with anyone else.
“Okay,” she mumbled before hanging up the phone.
~
It was several hours later and they were finished with the dinner. It wasn’t awkward at all, almost as if they’ve been together this entire time. Except there were no signs of romantic tension. “I can’t believe we finished a whole bottle of wine,” she mumbled while shaking her head.
“You act like that’s a lot for us,” he said laughing. They stood up from the table, walking together out of the building. She rolled her eyes playfully as they continued walking through the restaurant that they used to be regulars at.
They waited for the Uber they were going to share home. It was easier than riding separately. Her apartment was on the way to his hotel room. He stared towards her with a look she couldn’t quite decipher.
“I’m glad you agreed to go with me,” he let out, a smirk toying his lips. She smiled towards him, unsuspectedly she wanted to kiss him. It was a sudden urge, she wanted to blame the half bottle of wine she drank. Or it was the way he was looking at her, she missed his lips. The small scruff of facial hair looked amazing on him, as his brown eyes seemed brighter than normal.
The Uber pulled forward, and stopped in front of them. They climbed in the backseat. They were suddenly aware of each other's presence. Being on the opposite end of a dining table it was easy to feel normal. But being a near inch away from one another it was hard to ignore the magnet pulling them towards one another.
“Are you nervous?” she asked as he shifted his gaze towards her. His eyes looked down towards her lips for a brief second, admiring the red gloss covering them.
“Right now?” he asked, she shook her head. “Oh tomorrow? Yeah, a little. But I’m excited to play at Ball Arena again.” he mumbled as he licked his lips.
“I’m excited to see you play in person again,” she muttered.
“Yeah?” he asked, squinting his eyes slightly. She nodded.
“You know, our nights after that restaurant usually end differently,” she changed the subject, dropping her gaze to her lap. He smirked as he leaned his head towards her. She lifted her gaze to meet his eye. Her heart was pounding so loud it was the only thing she could hear.
She was getting hot as he was staring her down with utmost desperation.
“Yeah we are usually all-” he began making dramatic kissing motions towards her, purposely swirling his tongue out of his mouth.
“Right?” she laughed as she began mimicking the motion again as they leaned towards one another. Suddenly they began kissing for real. His hand took a hold of her cheek, pulling her towards him. The kiss was sloppy and desperate for more.
It was only a few minutes before the Uber driver stopped in front of her apartment building where they both climbed out of the car without thanking the driver. He took a hold of her hand guiding her towards the apartment as they were both breathing heavily.
Stepping inside the apartment they stumbled into the stairwell beside the front door to the building. He shoved her body against the wall and began kissing her again. She leaned her body against him as his hands held her hips tightly against him.
“Fuck,” she mumbled against his lips before she slipped away from his grasp, taking a hold of his hand as she guided him up the stairs towards the second floor.

She was standing with her newly found best friend of three weeks, inside a crowded sweaty frat party. The music was loud, it was hard to breathe and the only way to communicate was through shouting into each other’s ears. Nessa stood beside her, scanning the party for potential targets to help Y/N find a boyfriend.
Nessa had been in a relationship since she was a sophomore in high school. It was the fraternity her boyfriend was rushing, so of course she was invited. Which meant Y/N was invited. Nessa was Y/N’s random roommate assignment, as it turned out; they were perfect for each other.
They’ve been inseparable, as if they have been friends since forever. But here they were alone, getting bumped into every three seconds when Y/N’s eyes landed on her twin brother Ethan. “What the hell?” she muttered as she watched him dance alongside his teammate. Or someone she thought was his teammate, she was a little drunk and a little dizzy.
“He’s cute!” Nessa shouted, grabbing Y/N’s shoulder and forcing her gaze towards the blonde boy in the back of the party. Purposely brooding in the corner, alone. “Let’s play, have you met Y/N!” Nessa shouted. Y/N yanked Nessa back towards her.
“We are not going to play Have you met Ted!”
“We’re not playing Have you met Ted, we are playing Have you met Y/N!” she giggled, dragging her through the crowd.
“I’m so mad I showed you that show!” Y/N shouted as she was being dragged, muttering apologies to the people she was slammed into.
She stopped as she was slammed into a very familiar frame, her twin brother. “What the hell are you doing here?!” he shouted, staring towards her. Nessa spun around to see Ethan standing beside Y/N. Nessa’s eyes widened as she continued walking through the party in search of her boyfriend. Y/N glanced towards where she thought Nessa was to find that she was now alone with her brother standing in front of her.
“Since when do you go to parties?” he shouted, shaking his head.
She shrugged her shoulders, “Since I started college?” she shouted as she glanced towards the two guys beside Ethan, whispering towards one another.
She recognized them and Matty Beniers and Luke Hughes. Two of Ethan’s favorite teammates.
He clenched his jaw as he rolled his eyes, “That’s your last drink, alright?!” he shouted towards her, staring deeply into her eyes. She nodded reluctantly as himself and the other two boys walked away from her.
After a few minutes of wandering the party on her own, she found Nessa and her boyfriend Derek making out in the corner of the party. They were getting cheered by a bunch of his potential fraternity brothers. Y/N felt sick to her stomach as she decided to leave.
She called Ethan, reluctantly. He answered the phone but it was too loud to hear him. So, she texted him asking him to walk her back to their dorm building. He quickly replied, telling her to meet him outside of the house. She continued to shove her way through the house, begging to breathe fresh air, instead of other people’s sweat.
She stepped outside, her ears ringing. Her feet felt like she was levitating as she no longer could feel the bass. Her eyes landed on Ethan and the same two boys from earlier waiting outside.
“Are you alright?” Ethan asked, he scanned her frame. He hated seeing his sister dressed the way she was. It was definitely Nessa’s wardrobe because he’s never seen her sister wear clothes like that.
“Yeah, just Nessa found Derek and I realized I wanted to go home,” she mumbled as she looked towards the two taller boys standing behind Ethan. He continued to scan her features, knowing her true feelings despite her words.
Ethan and Y/N have always been close, not because they were twins, but because they enjoyed each other’s company and cared a lot about one another.
Ethan rested his hand on the center of her back as he guided her towards the two guys. “Y/N, Matty and Luke,” he motioned towards each of the boys, “My teammates,” he mumbled, smiling polietly.
“I’m sorry for dragging you guys from the party,” she let out, smiling sadly.
“It was boring anyway,” Matty mumbled.
“It was definitely not like the movies,” she mumbled.
The boys simply nodded with a wide smile on their faces. They were scanning her frame. Admiring the way her body took the clothes she was in. It was obvious she was stunning, it was obvious she was hot.
She began walking ahead of them, guiding them where her dorm was. It was around a half a mile walk back towards campus. Ethan stood in the middle of the taller pair. The three of them began walking, Ethan could tell the way the two boys were watching his sister.
He smacked his hands against their chest, grunts leaving their throats, “Don’t even fucking think about it,” Ethan muttered as he continued walking behind his sister.
Luke fought the smirk on his lips as he forced his gaze to the concrete below his feet. Matty simply rolled his eyes, practically saying as if!
All three of them lived in the same dorm building, so it ended up working out. It was a quiet walk back, nothing much to say. Y/N started stumbling a bit, as her last drink was finally catching up to her.
“Are you sure you can get to your room by yourself, want me to walk you?” Ethan asked as they were waiting for the elevator. Y/N nodded as she clenched her jaw. Ethan’s eyes widened as he smacked his hand against Luke’s arm, “You live on the same floor, can you walk her to her room?” Ethan stared into Luke’s eyes pleading with desperation. Luke nodded slowly as he looked back towards Y/N.
They all stepped into the elevator, Matty was the first to get off on the third floor. Ethan got off on the fifth. It was soon just Y/N and Luke. “I’m fine, you don’t actually have to walk me to my room,” she said, leaning towards him slightly.
Luke chuckled, adjusting the hat on his head as he met her gaze. His body froze for a second as he stared into her eyes. She smiled softly as she looked into his blue eyes. “I think your brother will actually kill me if I didn’t,” he said as the elevator doors opened.
She stepped out first, spinning around to meet Luke’s gaze once more before she began guiding him towards her room. “Thank you,” she mumbled as they continued down the hallway.
“It’s not a big deal,” he said, shrugging. She smiled as she stopped in front of her door. The name tags on the door that her RA had put up. She leaned against the door as she stared into Luke’s eyes for a much longer time than she should have. Something about the way he squinted his eyes and the way he was looking at her was intoxicating.
“I’m gonna-” she mumbled, pressing her lips together. He nodded as he shoved his hands into his pockets. He took a step backwards.
“I’ll see you around?” he asked, tilting his head to the side as he began walking towards the other side of the floor. She nodded as she spun around to unlock her door. She shoved the door open and quickly stepped inside. Letting out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding as the cold air washed over her body.
