“What about you? Fancy anyone in particular?”
“Good way to think. Keeps your head on straight.” He takes a sip of his drink. “Anybody else out here catch your eye?”

“That’s a nice way to look at it...” A smile spread across her face slowly. Cauthrien was right, no point in wallowing in the past. A lot of vets seemed to do that; sit around and talk and talk about old battles and causes, so much so that they didn’t get to enjoy the future they spent so much time fighting for. It was a shame, really.
Tumblr media
“Hey, maybe someday I’ll be talking like this with some young upstart, just like this? You know, after we win. If we win.”
Tumblr media
“… I have not met their like. But you should not think about it, I joined the army to ensure no Ferelden had to suffer so again. Let the veterans remember it, then let it die with us, Maker knows you’ll have your own horrors to remember by the end.”

“I suppose that’s true...” Ritts couldn’t help feeling sorry for the hypothetical raiders who could have become prey to the giant beast. Sure, they hadn’t chosen the best career path, but they were still people. Any one of them could have turned it all around, just like she did.
Tumblr media
“Still, I think it’s a good thing the blasted thing’s out of our hair. If there wasn’t much for it to eat out there, it wouldn’t’a stayed in the desert for long.”
“Ah.” She still wasn’t sure whether that was sarcasm or not.
Tumblr media
“Oh, I was terrified. I kind of wish we hadn’t had to kill her— the area isn’t too populated anyway, so she only would have been a danger to the raiders. But she attacked us first, and there isn’t much place to hide in the desert,” she said with a shake of her head. “Mythal must have been looking out for me, that nobody died.” She said it casually, without an emphasis on the god, but it was still a correction.

[I. I don’t know how I got so many new followers after being inactive for so long, but thank you!!(??!)! Sorry about the prolonged absence; I won’t bore you with details about my personal life but I should be back to regular activity for a while.
Gonna knock out a few replies tonight; if you do want to drop our thread, let me know? I promise I won’t be offended, I’ve been gone for a lot longer than I thought I’d be.]

Semi-Hiatus until 4/20
[Got another con coming up, so that means a) more/longer shifts at work to make up all the hours I’ll be missing that weekend, and 2) any free time I DO have will probably be spent doctoring up my cosplay stuff. Between now and then, I’ll post as much as I can.
On another note, if you’re going to Anime St. Louis, maybe I’ll see you there!(?) See y’all in like two weeks!]

7. (young adulthood) Reality hits hard and hurts terribly.
Ritts,I was pleased when I heard the village elder describe you. I am told you are a very beautiful young woman, and delightful to be around. I don’t know what they have told you of me, but I am under the impression that I am your senior by many years. I have been married once before, and my late wife and I had three children together. You will be tasked with their upbringing, as well as raising any children the two of us have together. You need not search for work outside the home; I earn enough in my work as a carpenter to support our family. While I would never consider myself a rich man, you will never want for food or a warm bed. You will always be taken care of here, and I hope that in time we will grow to love and cherish one another.Wishing you the best,Your future husband.
Blech, he sounded dreadfully boring. And he was old! And, and, three children for her to take care of? He didn’t want a wife, he wanted a nanny!
She didn’t dare complain, to anyone; she knew her concerns would be silenced with plenty of ‘don’t be so ungrateful!’s, ‘you will understand when you’re older’s, and at least one ‘you’re lucky mum and dad didn’t just sell you off to the whore house’ from her older brother. She was still a child, no one would listen to her. But the step up to adulthood required her to marry the man picked out for her. What was the point in becoming an adult if the most important choice of your life was already made for you?
It was terribly unfair.

16. What does ‘trust’ mean?
Trust is rushing into battle without fear, because your team has your back. Trust is being able to sleep at night, because you know you won’t wake up to a looted campsite, your companions long gone. Trust is when you let someone tie you to the headboard, knowing they won’t leave you there, naked, for the innkeeper to find in the morning.
It isn’t easy, and it is not something everyone can give you, but it’s... nice.

send me a number and i’ll write a drabble about my muse’s past
Elves in the city love to tell stories about the Dalish. They’re free to travel as they please. Their numbers are small enough that humans usually don’t bother them, and their hunters and warriors are fierce enough that those who do rarely make it back home in one piece. They still remember and worship the old gods. They cherish magic. They understand what it means to be free.
The reality, Ritts comes to find, is very different. Traveling close to any settlements - human or otherwise - is dangerous, their small numbers aren’t enough to defend the entire clan should a local militia come looking for them. So much of their people’s history is lost, even to them, and they spend so much time mourning the loss of the past, and Ritts wonders how the elves will ever have a future. She watches a weeping family leave their mage child in the woods, as per their Keeper’s request, but is unable to do anything about it; to the Dalish, she is still a child herself. Her words mean nothing.
The Dalish don’t build their walls with mortar and stone, but they’re still there.

“Eh, could’a been a lot worse...” The horror stories Ritts had heard about Orlesian alienages... some of it was the stuff of nightmares. “I knew when to keep my head down and my mouth shut. Mostly. A lot of our people aren’t quite so lucky. It’s hard to imagine a place like that changing, but... maybe you’re right. I hope you are.”
Tumblr media
“At any rate, yes. It’s much better to be out here. It may be a job, but the Inquisition takes care of their own, and pays us good coin. Might be dangerous sometimes, but it’s dangerous everywhere, these days.”
Tumblr media
Rabbit. The slur sent a slight spark of anger through him, yet the healer’s expression changed not. The terms were entirely inappropriate, and though he’d heard many utter such lowly things to he and his kind before, Faeron had never taken kindly to it — after all, why should he? Any disrespect, no matter who it came from, had never been tolerated. He felt bad for Ritts. There was an instinctual thought in his mind that desired to help her in whichever way he could, but alas! some wounds could not be seen, and could not be healed. A verbal infliction always seemed to leave the worst sorts of scars. Yet besides the racism, the elf had always been fascinated by Orlais and its dwellers. Their culture was so flamboyant, so inexpressible, that it was always an adventure to explore the architecture of their settlements and attempt (often with little success) to understand the people beneath the masks.        “I’m sorry you experienced that,” he speaks solemnly, voice quieter than it had been. “The people of Orlais are complex, biased people, I find. Yet I cannot blame the young for the teachings of the old. Perhaps in time, the matter of race will be put behind them, yet for now we can only do our best to be deaf to their words. And… I do know what you mean. As much as I am fond of places like Val Royeaux, the forests are much better — even such a damp, stormy place as this!”
