Update 7
Wow, only a couple a couple more weeks until I graduate!  While I am getting excited, I must confess that I will miss school, and the luxury of time I have alloted to write.  I have completed my third chapter, which is chapter 2.  At this time I am editing and polishing so that it flows with my first chapter.  I found this chapter to be more research intensive, and was happy that I did a lot of it before writing my story.  This chapter is at the time of World War II and what ignited an excuse to go to war.  I still need to revisit my final chapter and massage certain details, but this may have to come later.  For now, I am going to get back to chapter 2 because I really like the way in which my story is coming together.

Update 6
Since we are on the home stretch, I have decided to dig in and complete a third chapter.  I know that it is a lot, but I believe I can do it.  I have been editing and polishing chapter one, but think I will need to go back to my final chapter again to massage out some of the details Iʻve included.  I have found that when I sit down to write, I need to have complete silence around me to get into my storytelling.  For instance, the other day, there were yardmen blowing and mowing and I had a really hard time.  So much so that I had to wait for them to finish before I could begin again. I used to go to the library, but since I had a neck procedure, I did not have that option.  I will let you know how my third chapter (chapter 2) is coming along in the weeks ahead.

Update Five
I polished my ending chapter, while editing chapter one to send to the published writer who gave me notes on my ending chapter. I have found both polishing and editing to be very rewarding in the vein of my story becoming stronger. For example, I talk about the Fox Movie Palace in Detroit in my ending chapter, as well as Snow White, which is my mother’s favorite animated film. But how to arrive at the theatre or introduce Snow White is the journey that needed attention.  By paying more attention to these types of details I am enjoying the story more and more and I hope you will too.

For my fourth progress update I would like feedback from anyone that would like to read the begining to my story.  I would be most grateful to anyone that can take the time.

Grateful
I wanted to share in my third progress update that I am going through a painful divorce.  My wife left me for someone out of the blue after 27 years.  The reason I am sharing this is I am so grateful to have school, my writing, my professors and my classmates.  Although it has been challenging at times to focus, when I sit down to write and look at my computer, knowing I have my classmates and professors support has been a lifeline for me.  I have begun my first chapter now that my ending chapter is polished.  I plan on revisiting reading my final chapter out loud to see the flow.  I do hope some of my classmates will give me feedback.

Review of my Final Chapter
For my second progress update I decided to read my final chapter out loud, which highlighted where I am repeating myself, as well as grammatical errors. In doing this I recognized my characters needed to be surprising, yet convincing at the same time. In my final chapter Sophie, Katarina, Danny, George, Percy, and Beverly are round characters, whereas the shoe store owner, national guardsmen, and union representatives are flat characters. As an example, Sophie is described with imagery and has strong emotions that are conveyed throughout the chapter, which make her a round character. On the other hand, the shoe store owner is a flat character, as we do not know much about him, except for the fact that he is racist. My main characters show who they are and therefore drive the plot by being believable. Also, these characters network throughout the chapter, further exemplifying their believability. Additionally, I was able to define my characters by what they look like. I originally did this with my character Danny, but found the plot to be stronger and more authentic by characterizing him through actions.
I sent this chapter to a writer who I respect and admire. She is currently reading the chapter and will be giving me her feedback after she completes the chapter. I am very encouraged by her emails because she said: “I love your story and your writing and am thrilled that you did it! It is not easy to craft a page, much less a whole book! This is a substantial chapter and I will give it more time.” This means so much to me because she is a published, successful, amazing writer. Once I receive feedback from her I will edit and polish this chapter before sending it to her again.

Progress Report on Ending Chapter
For my first progress update of my Senior Capstone project, I have been busy writing the last chapter to my story Black and White.  I wanted to write the end to my story before the beginning, as I need to know where I am going before I put the words down to the first chapter.  Last semester when taking a screenwriting class, I learned this is the best way to tell a story.  With that in mind, I decided to revisit the research I had conducted last semester, which pertained to the Detroit race riot in the summer of 1943.  Further, I decided to go back and listen to an interview, which I did with my mother for my Pre-Capstone class, in order to develop more details of what the period looked and felt like.
Currently, I am editing the ending so that I can give the final chapter to a writer, whom I admire and respect, so that she can give me feedback.  Once I have this, I will polish the final chapter. I am extremely excited to share my work with her and will let you know my progress.
Stay tuned...
