there  was  a  big  part  of  east  that  wished  he  didn’t  have  to  see  his  ex  anymore.  it  wasn’t  that  he  hated  her,  it  was  just  the  fact  that  he  hurt  her  so  bad…  and  all  the  stuff  that  had  gone  on  between  her  and  his  girlfriend.  but  here  they  were,  seated  at  tables  about  a  foot  away  from  each  other.  the  musician  eyed  the  table,  awkwardly  chewing  a  bite  from  his  shrimp  cocktail,  before  glancing  back  up  at  mariana.  he  didn’t  know  whether  he  should  say  anything  or  not;  maybe  she  wouldn’t  notice.

mariana  was  in  her  own  world  ,  per  usual  .  plenty  of  substances  rushing  through  her  bloodstream  to  make  her  easily  ignore  &  forget  her  surroundings  .  she  entered  the  bar  early  so  she  could  get  a  couple  drinks  before  the  person  she  was  supposed  to  be  meeting  show  up  ,  so  she  situates  herself  on  the  edge  of  the  bar  completely  unaware  of  her  surroundings ,  sipping  on  her  drink  while  mindlessly  scrolling  through  her  phone  .

       bumps into her on his way out of the studio , quickly forcing him to halt in his steps , rather than head out like he was planning on . he was hoping to catch her anyways , considering the idea that had popped into his mind the previous night . “  you’re not busy or anything now are you ??  ”  daniel asks , hues gazing into hers . “  i was thinking yesterday .  .  . maybe we should work together , like put something out . it’d blow up , i’m serious . ”

mariana  felt  like  it  had  become  too  often  of  an  occurrence  that  she’d  been  running  into  daniel  lately  at  the  studio  .  but  at  the  same  time ,  it  made  sense  .  they  both  worked  there  ,  similar  hours  ,  similar  staff  ,  it  just   happened  .  she  knew  it  was  in  the  best  interest  for  them  to  just  get  along  &  be  civil  .  what  happened  between  them  was  a  long  time  ago  .  “  right  now  ?  ”   she  repeats  ,  biting  the  inside  of  her  lip  as  she  caught  his  gaze  .  “  uhhh  ..  no  i’m  not  busy  right  now  ,   ”   mari  shrugs  ,  before  raising  her  brows  slightly  at  his  next  words  ,  taking  a  few  seconds  to  process  before  responding  .  “  yeah  ,  i  mean  i’ve  always  wanted  to  collab  with  you  ,  you  know  that  ,  ”   she  offers  a  soft  smile  .  “  i’m  down  ,  ”   the  brunette  shrugs  lightly  .

the question catches her off guard for reasons she doesn’t quite understand . maybe her immediate answer should be yes– yes she believes it’s for the best . but that didn’t completely feel like the truth … she was so mixed up with her emotions running high . and most importantly , she didn’t want to hurt mari anymore than she already has . so in response to the question she finds herself just looking away and shrugging . as if that was the proper way to go about it . she feels silly for being unable to give a genuine answer . but any direct confirming or disconfirming response felt like a betrayal to either east or mari . and she couldn’t stand the thought of either . her eyes shut momentarily as she listens to the other’s soft words . ‘i know’ she thinks . but she doesn’t dare say it out loud . even if it’s true . she knows if given the chance that mari would’ve loved her right . and she’d have given mari her all . but apparently it wasn’t meant to be . the gaze they’re locked in when mari confirms there’s nothing she can do to fix things feels like it lasts hours . as if time slows down and the weight of the world crashes onto her chest . she has to make the conscious effort to take deep breaths as she tries in vain to calm herself , but she knows the tears will fill her eyes no matter what . she’s can’t fight them off any longer . so with a teary expression , she whispers , “i’m so sorry , mari .” the back of her hand comes up to wipe away at the tears before they get the chance to roll down her cheeks . once her throat is cleared , she tries to speak louder this time . “you don’t know how badly i want there was a way that we end up okay after all this … but i think i just have to … i think i’m just going to leave you alone forever . that way i can’t hurt you anymore .” but forever seemed like such a long time to be without her . friends or more .

when  she  sees  the  tears  run  down  cass’  cheek  ,  it  feels  like  someone  shot  her  through  the  heart  .  she  never  ever  wanted  to  see  her  like  this ,  the  blonde  deserved  everything  in  the  world  ,  and  to  be  happy  .   her  next  words  almost  make  the  pain  worse  ,  having  to  hear  that  this  is  how  things  are  ending  between  them  .  it  was  the  last  thing  she  wanted  ,  but  she  didn’t  know  another  option  .   there  were  reasons  she  didn’t  have  east  in  her  life  ,  &   still  being  friends  with  east’s  new  girlfriend  who  mari  was  practically  in  love  with  ?   it  just  wasn’t  a  good  idea  .   it  was  like  the  brunette  couldn’t  even  stop  the  tears  that  were  now  welling  in  her  eyes  ,  no  matter  how  much  she  convinced  herself  she  could  control  her  emotions  ,  it  was  clear  this  was  just  so  painful  .  losing  cass  was  something  she  never  imagined  ,  it  was  the  worst  thing  in  the  world  .  and  the  fact  she  lost  her  to  east  ,  made  it  worse  .  mari  hadn’t  felt  a  pain  like  this  in  a  long  time  .   she  brings  her  hand  up  to  touch  the  blonde’s  face  ,  palm  resting  just  above  her  jaw  as  her  thumb  moved  along  cass’  cheek  to  wipe  away  the  tears  .  “  i’m  sorry  ,  too  ..  ”    she  whispers  ,   gaze  never  moving  away  from  the  blonde’s  for  as  long  as  she  could  .  once  mari  felt  a  tear  escape  her  eyes  and  run  down  her  cheek  ,   she  brings  her  hand  back  to  her  side  ,  having  to  force  herself  to  take  a  few  steps  back  from  the  girl  .   as  she’s  preparing  herself  to  walk  away  from  the  girl  for  the  last  time   ,   she  stops  for  a  moment  ,  looking  up  at  her  from  a  distance  now  .   “  cass  ,  i  just  want  you  to  know  that  you’re  perfect  .  inside  and  out  .  so  just  don’t  settle  for  anything  less  than  what  you  deserve  ,  okay  ?   promise  me  .  ”
