He didn’t need to carry the burden of ‘champion.’ That kind of stuff, the fame and the, well, everything else was something he could do without. The people he wanted to notice didn’t, so it was all sorta pointless to him. 

“I didn’t mean it as anythin’ bad! It’s cool that you fought he elites! Even cooler you won! I just wanted to know if you were champ or not!!” Considering he was under the impression the current champ was some little girl, it would have been ruder to think he was the reining leader.
