Hi. I'm trying to find some of my stuff from the group CSI-GrissomSara. It was a yahoo group, which was a victim of the great purge of 2020. Could you possibly help me? Thank you so much, and I appreciate you!
We did save that group. Right now we don't have bandwidth* to look up individual groups. If you'd like access to it sooner, you're welcome to volunteer to tag a tab.
*(It takes extra time to dig up individual group data from the mess of data it ended up in, it's done only as a perk to those helping with the organization process.)
You're also welcome to join our Discord server (https://discord.gg/UyJdffhw2b) and/or Dreamwidth community (https://yahoogroups.dreamwidth.org/profile).

Vladadopt
Looking for this group that was active in 2002-2003
We adopted our son from Vladivostok and I'm trying to contact some of the other adoptive parents from that timeframe.

Russian_Adoption group or Vladivostok_Adoption are the ones I'm after.
We focused on Fandom (TV shows and movies) Yahoo Groups. The Archive Team at the Internet Archive might have archived the group as long as they were public or open.

Yahoo Groups? Yes, We’re Still Saving Them. Stay Tuned!
In 2019, #Verizon shut down #YahooGroups. While the #ArchiveTeam focused on saving as many groups across the board, #transformative #fandom took on the task of saving our communities.
A new Yahoo Groups #Dreamwidth community has been started where you can keep up with the progress of the Yahoo Gedden Rescue Team as they process and add metadata to the (gulp) million groups they saved
https://yahoogroups.dreamwidth.org/
From 2020:“Between the #ArchiveTeam volunteers and the Yahoo Groups Fandom Rescue Project, we saved 960,233 unique groups through Yahoo’s GetMyData method (not counting what was saved through the Python script and PGOffline). Wow! And hopefully some more is yet to come as there are a few people who have promised to send us their GMDs but haven’t yet.”
“How much of that is #fandom? At this point, all I can estimate is "somewhere around 300,000?” It is really impossible to know yet. I finished working on the metadata and will be uploading it soon, and sometime next spring (I hope!) we might begin on the more finely-detailed analysis that would let us identify individual fandoms and all of that.“
The project is ongoing & volunteers will be needed
11/22 update: "As of this evening, it’s up to 12.39% sorted & 0.99% tagged.”
“A big call for volunteers won’t go out until I have all tabs prepped & ready to go, but if you or someone you know is detail-oriented and likes the idea of helping out, limited numbers of volunteers can be used right now, as indeed a couple of them have been hard at work for months tagging tabs & fleshing out any bugs in the tagging process.”

What you're doing is terrific, and I'm thrilled! So much was lost when Yahoo!Groups was closed down. I have a request: About twenty-odd years ago, I ran a Group called psychedelic_monkees, a Monkees-Beatles RPG. If it's at all possible, could you please see if you can archive it? I'd love to be able to store it safely. Thank you!
Hi, if you have archived the Group and are looking for a place that can take your files, you can send them to the Yahoo Gedden team. Email [email protected]
You can also reach out to the OTW's Open Doors project to see if they will archive the files: https://opendoors.transformativeworks.org/en/yahoo-groups-rescue-project/

In late 2019, fans assembled to save Yahoo Groups after Verizon decided to shut down the mailing list service. Approximately 300,000 fandom groups have been saved. The Yahoo Gedden project has reached the fandom identification stage and can use your help. We need to identify the fandom for each group so that the data can be sorted by fandom. You can work at your own pace and the work will be done via a shared Google Sheet. No software or other tools needed besides your phone/computer and access to the Internet.. See the spreadsheet link for details on how to help: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uv4XbJMs_YZA1UcO_RlZo5u1JSuBJf_Lm7k3tAb1NZo/edit?usp=sharing

“I can’t stand when things just disappear,” Dorawen, one of the leaders of the Yahoo Groups Fandom Rescue Project, told me. If Yahoo Groups was a burning building, she ran out with thousands upon thousands of pseudonymous stories from the Lord of the Rings, Sims, and X-Men communities. Then she helped other fans save 300,000 more groups. (She asked to remain anonymous, because she is a teacher and doesn’t want her students to know her fan-fiction pen name.) “This is our history. We created this information in all this detail.”

A Peek Behind The Curtain Of The Project To Save 300,000 Yahoo Groups
Volunteer Doranwen writes:
“ Yahoo Groups metadata processing:  I’ve been working on processing Yahoo Groups metadata for ages (something like seven months now), and probably few of you actually care what all that has involved, but I decided to take a break from it this evening to type up the process for any data processing geeks out there. “

“With so little time left to save almost 20 years of posts, images, and other irreplaceable content, fans, preservationists, and moderators swiftly organized and took action. The Archive Team took the lead on preservation efforts for the Internet Archive, with a handful of volunteers writing code to download content and dozens more joining groups by the thousands so that their content could be saved. In parallel, the fandom community quickly formed the Yahoo-Geddon project and, with the help of 200 volunteers, began focusing on archiving fandom groups using tools developed by the Archive Team and PG Offline and communicating via a centralized Discord and Tumblr. They, along with other preservation groups like the Yahoo Groups Crusade, spread information, reached out to journalists, and asked for volunteers to help both the Archive Team’s and Yahoo-Geddon’s parallel group preservation efforts. Meanwhile, the OTW’s Open Doors Committee created the Yahoo Groups Rescue Project to spread the word and assist moderators who needed help archiving their groups on the Archive of Our Own, and wrote an Open Letter to Verizon asking them to postpone the content purge.
The speed and numbers behind the fandom community’s organization had a secondary benefit: They were able to direct the Archive Team’s focus on preserving public fandom Yahoo groups in a way that many other communities were not able to, securing greater representation for the community. In turn, Yahoo-Geddon volunteers supported the Archive Team’s broader preservation efforts, helping them save cooking groups, genealogy groups, non-English language groups, and many more.
These efforts were not entirely in vain: Verizon extended the deadline to January 31, 2020; the Archive Team was able to preserve over 1 million groups; the Yahoo-Gedden team saved around 300,000 fandom-themed groups; hundreds or thousands more were saved by users or moderators alerted to the purge by collective outreach efforts; and several of these groups will be adding their fannish content to the AO3 as Open Doors projects! However, this pales in comparison to the estimated over 10 million groups that were lost—equivalent to the estimated 90% of films made before 1929 that are lost forever because no one thought they were worth preserving.“

1 Million Yahoo Groups?
In early December, Yahoo Gedden volunteer Doranwen completed her compiling of the metadata on the Yahoo Groups that were saved by the Archive Team and the Yahoo Gedden Team. That metadata has now been uploaded to the Internet Archive:  https://archive.org/details/Yahoo_Groups_Metadata
“The spreadsheets include all 960,613 confirmed GMD groups, plus 150,394 other groups (many of which had been long-dead by the time we came across their names, referenced only in links within other groups). At some point it may get moved into a specific collection of Yahoo Groups stuff, but at least it's uploaded now so everyone can browse the spreadsheets and see group descriptions, member numbers, creation dates, and much more. (And should you want to, you can identify from the spreadsheets which groups we have group photos for and go view those pictures by downloading the correct tar file and extracting the raw data within to see each file.) If you know anyone who wants to use this for any sort of research or analysis, please point them to that link! I want it to be accessible to all. “
Note this is just the metadata. We will be talking about the actual number of Yahoo Groups that were saved in the next post.

The end of Yahoo Groups - a few thoughts & stats
Back in February, Doranwen wrote up an analysis of the work she had done on the Yahoo Gedden project. A few excerpts are below, but can read the entire post here
“For the past four months I have been saving Yahoo Groups. It started with just me saving a few groups from favorite fandoms or ones I was tangentially interested in, and it sort of exploded, lol. By the end I was coordinating with not only the other members of the (Yahoo Groups) Fandom Rescue Project (aka Yahoo-Geddon), but also with the ArchiveTeam, a loose network of volunteers who try to save data in order to give it to the Internet Archive, best known for the Wayback Machine. (Please note, however: they are NOT actually affiliated with the Internet Archive! Too many people are confused on that point.) ....
A few numbers and random other bits of info: ~2 TB of fandom data saved (that I know of, for now) ~200,000 confirmed fandom groups saved in some fashion ~2,000 Sims groups saved* Languages for which I saw Tolkien-related groups: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Esperanto, Lithuanian, Indonesian, Turkish, Catalan, Polish, Bosnian, Hungarian, Finnish A few categories that made me laugh (yes, these really exist): Sneezing Traffic Signs Music That Sucks Also, there were a ton of Anti- categories (Anti-Jennifer Lopez, Anti-Hentai, Anti-Eminem, etc.) and quite a variety of pr0n categories (I won't give examples there, lol). “
