I want less of "the Drakes were terrible people and parents and Bruce rescues poor sad Timmy" (not knocking the trope it just got old for me)

And more of Bruce suffering a hell of his own creation as he tries to figure out how to parent Timothy "latchkey kid" Drake, who doesn't respect the concept of having parental supervision in general and more specifically Bruce's authority as his new guardian at all, because Tim was basically his caretaker for the entire beginning of his tenure as Robin

Any kind of Parental Action would have Bruce choking in his own hypocrisy. Like... imagine trying to get your teenage son to go to bed when he's been putting your ass down for naps for like, years, by that point. Imagine telling him to eat healthier when at 13 years old he was helping your butler with designing your meal plan 'cause you were too depressed to eat

Bruce gently tries to get him to stop working on a case to take a break, and Tim raises a single withering eyebrow (he learned this from Alfred) and Bruce immediately shuts up. Tim only listens to Bruce when he wants to and being legally adopted by the man hasn't changed that

I feel that the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon has a weird chokehold over a lot of the DC fandom, particularly the parts that don't actually READ or even like COMICS, to the point where this show, whose creators openly admit had to be simple enough for a toddler to follow, largely informs a lot of fans' interpretations of some pretty complex characters, themes and continuity. This show, specifically, has become DC nostalgia bait, and I think it's due time for a lot of this fandom to take off their rose-tinted glasses and let the show go.

Like I enjoyed the show growing up and I still have a soft spot for episodes like Lightspeed and Hide & Seek, but...frankly it's a simple show tailored to young kids that just does not, and was never meant to, do justice to the Titans' comic canon. This show could never have done Who is Donna Troy? and conveyed the unlabelableness of Donna and Dick's relationship, but it was never supposed to. Characterisations are intentionally dumbed down, themes are broken down into bite-sized morals, half of the show is dedicated to comedy, and character development is purposely few and far between because this show was designed for kids aged 2-11. And all that is fine but it's just not at all a reflection of what the Titans really are in print. It should not really inform any serious reading of the DC comic universe.

On the one hand, I really didn't need to see Red X on a cover or Starfire talking in broken english in a comic or even just my favs' tags fill up with fanon nonsense, it's all just cheap nostalgia bait that people need to stop falling for. It's sacrificing theme in favour of cheap references. On the other hand, I think the fans I'm talking about probably owe it to themselves to a) be honest and critical about their engagement with DC media, and b) actually challenge themselves when engaging in media instead of just wallowing in flanderized fluff.

It’s funny to me that Magnus Archives started out with mostly “normal” ghost stories & held back on the really weird stuff until later seasons, whereas with Protocol we’ve gotten the following in the first twelve episodes:

- Guy Who Murdered His Wife Gets Turned Into a Tree While Running From the Cops

- Man Made of Needles

- Demon Antique Enthusiasts Who Crowd Crush People

- Janitor Runs Away From IRL Timelapse Only to End Up in a Cannibal Restaurant in the Void

- A Guy Just Straight Up Gets Run Over by a Semi Truck

- Knockoff Barney the Dinosaur Shows Up to a Strip Club and Starts Smashing Skulls

The Tim lives (and serves the desolation) au concept is so painful because 1. He'd be so sexy but also 2. there is no way he and Jon would have been able to rekindle a friendship. An uneasy cohabitation maybe. Or even an unhealthy companionship formed from traumabonding and surviving 2 major traumas together. But I can't see them being in a healthy relationship (at least the time spanning from the unknowing up until the watcher's crown)
