I think this is the prettiest world – so long as you don’t mind a little dying, how could there be a day in your whole life that doesn’t have its splash of happiness?

“Let the tears which fell, and the broken words which were exchanged in the long close embrace between the orphans, be sacred. A father, sister, and mother, were gained, and lost, in that one moment. Joy and grief were mingled in the cup; but there were no bitter tears: for even grief arose so softened, and clothed in such sweet and tender recollections, that it became a solemn pleasure, and lost all character of pain.”

the raven cycle + friendship
while i love the magic and the adventure in the raven cycle, what i love most about the series is the friendship that is developed throughout the books. a friendship that within itself is magical and dreamy. a friendship that has grown and adapted and matured so beautifully. a friendship between characters that feels alive and genuine. that is what i love most about the raven cycle and it is something i hope to see in call down the hawk.

Book Review: House of Beating Wings (The Kingdom of Crows #1) by Olivia Wildenstein
A friend bought me this for my birthday and I think those who gravitate toward fantasies with a prophecy-like quest or odyssey at its epicenter will find much to enjoy from it. There's a Celtic folkore influence as well, with a lovely mix of human, faerie, halfling, and shapeshifter creatures to round it out.
Fallon, the heroine, has the awareness of rock, so prepare yourself to be frustrated by her. She's young for her kind, so I think that excuses some of her immaturity and selfishness. She does grow on you, but watching her willfully misinterpret Bronwen's prophecy, which she immediately attaches to Dante, the faerie prince she's loved (idealized) since childhood, has you wanting to facepalm and slap her simultaneously. Let's just say there isn't a red flag in sight she doesn't blow past on her journey to free a magically-bound crow king.
That said, the magic and mythology in this book was rich, immersive, and unique, and I liked how it was weaved intricately into the politics of the world. I also loved the concept of shapeshifting here, with the hero in multi-crow form for most of the story. I was not expecting to be won over by a mind-speaking bird king, but well, here I am. Go on and speak crow to me, Lorcan!
