You choose to remain silent, you ignore!
TW // murder, violence, racism
Ever since Covid-19 rose last year, there has been increasing reports on anti-Asian hate crimes ever since March. Across populous U.S. cities, Asian-hate crimes have increased 150% and have had 2,500+ reports from March to September last year. These anti-Asian crimes are predominantly affecting older generations, children, teenagers, middle-aged Asians -- all.  Last January 28, 2021, Vicha Ratanapakdee, an 84-year-old man, was murdered while taking a walk in San Francisco. This was an unprovoked attack by Antoine Watson and Maylasia Goo who was his runaway driver. On January 31, a 91-year-old Asian man was forcefully pushed to the ground in Oakland’s Chinatown in broad daylight which was caught on a surveillance camera.  On February 4, Noel Quintana, a 61-year-old man on a Manhattan subway was slashed in the face across both his cheeks which led him incapable of talking for a while.  Asian toddlers were stabbed in a grocery store, an Asian woman was set on fire and was thrown acid on... the list goes on.
People are quick to hold prejudice against mainly Chinese people as they were assumed to be associated with Covid-19. The mindset that Chinese people deserve to die is because of the yellow peril caricature that east-Asians are disease-carrying creatures who eat bats and rats. At the root of these anti-Asian hate crimes is sinophobia, which in definition is the direct discrimination held against Chinese people.
This hate has led to threaten the safety of our fellow Asian Americans. We should not choose to remain silent over this matter, especially talking if you are a fellow Asian. If we are able to appreciate and fancy their culture (e.g. music, movies, TV dramas, food, etc.) then we should also stand by with them to fight against anti-Asian racism.
You don’t have to wait to be discriminated against in order to act upon this situation.
