NYPD officers with batons and wearing helmets are taking scores of Columbia University students into custody after groups protesting the war in Gaza refused to take down up a two-day encampment zone. Hundreds of cops entered campus in the early afternoon, with several “school buses” on standby to transport those arrested. Students continued to chant on the lawn as the arrests were underway.
-- From "NYPD clearing Columbia University campus, detaining students after pro-Palestinian protesters refuse to leave" by Barry Williams, Cayla Bamberger, and Thomas Tracy for Daily News, 18 Apr 2024 3:06pm EDT

The original encampment was located on the South Lawn; after the arrests, other students relocated to the West Lawn.

What radicalised me into the youth liberation were my parents.
They smacked me, took away my possessions, threatened to destroy said possessions, emotionally neglected and abused me, ignored my declining mental health, ignored my autism and ADHD symptoms, had my thoughts, feelings and opinions dismissed because “I’m just a kid”, called me lazy and selfish because I just wanted to rest because I’ve been on my feet for the past four hours looking after my baby sibling, told that my pain doesn’t matter because “it could be worse”, taught that my emotions don’t matter, taught that I can only rely on myself even when I clearly need help, taught that what’s between my legs is much more important to them than what’s between my ears etc. etc.
Because of all this, I’m both terrified and resentful of my parents especially my step father, who’s an ignorant Gen X cishet white man who has admitted that he believes he’s better than everyone when in reality he’s just surrounded by mentally ill/disabled people and literal children who are still learning how to be people.
I’m not joking when I say that I that I’m glad I’m moving out, but I’m really worried that I’m going to “mess up” somehow and my parents will chose keep me home longer. They hold so much power over me, even more than they know, they’re capable of absolutely destroying my life and I would be incapable of stopping them because we live in the middle of bush and it’s a three hour walk out.
And I bet you my bottom dollar if my parents knew how I really felt about them they would punish me in someway because hating the people who traumatised you is crime apparently :/

Good day, Key! I just got into punk (and politics in general) recently, and what with the state of the world right now, I wanted to ask if you know of any ways to be more politically active as a teenager? Or any tips on how to join protests. I'm still a high schooler, but I want to help in some way, even if it's just a little bit. I hope you don't mind the ask (I couldn't think of anyone else), and thank you so much!!
Hi! Hello!!
Starting this saying that others are welcome to add on and give ideas and examples
There are a LOT of ways that teens can be politically active, and youth activism has had profound impacts throughout history!
Learn about an issue! Thats step one in any case. Environmentalism, civil rights, censorship, you name it. The first thing you’ve gotta do is learn about it. For this I recommend @bfpnola’s Liberation Library. (If I forget to link this theres a link in my masterlist)
Spread the word about the issue! Tell people, talk to them, make flyers (diy or use canva to make free ones), hang them places, make bottle cap pins about it, start a social media account about it. But you’ve gotta tell people about the issue if its not a well known one or express *why* its an issue
Do something about the issue! Join a local protest, organize a local protest, organize a group to work on fixing the issue, is there something missing (books at the library, benches for parks, food for the hungry, community garden)? Try to fundraise and supply it, or petition for it. Call your local representatives and tell them your thoughts on issues.
This was all very simplified, but it all depends on what specific issue(s) you are interested in. And remember, even a little improvement is better than no improvement. And sometimes you wont be able to completely fix issues, ESPECIALLY if you dont have a whole group helping you. And thats okay, because even the little progress that would be made, is better than no progress at all.
And lastly,

“We are prepared to do whatever it takes,” said Adah Crandall, 17, an organiser for the Sunrise Movement based in Portland, Oregon. “The far right has waged this battle against school boards and against public education, and they put a lot of time and money into trying to do things like ban books and prevent us from learning the truth about the climate crisis,” said Crandall. “And all of these things, all of these things are happening while the climate crisis is raging outside of our windows.” ... To prepare for the fight ahead, about 150 high schoolers from across the US gathered in Illinois to attend a summer camp where they honed their activism, learning advocacy and escalation tactics. Later this week, hundreds of students will join Jamaal Bowman, a New York representative, and Ed Markey, the Massachusetts senator, in Washington DC, as the lawmakers reintroduce their Green New Deal for Public Schools Act. The legislation would provide funding to help schools expand and develop curricula, hire staff and retrofit campuses.

“We’re big fans of young people taking sex ed into their own hands. So, it’s no surprise I was thrilled to interview Tara Michaela, who recently founded the Youth Sexpert Program (YSP) when she was nineteen. Young people remain a major source of information about sex for each other and her program takes inspiration from those informal, peer to peer conversations about sex. YSP wants to equip young people with information and skills to educate each other about sex and relationships well. Tara took time to chat with me about her own experiences with sex education, her process of becoming a sex educator, and her hopes for the organization she’s created.”
