Vibrant Photographs of Tokyo at Night by Masashi Wakui

Tokyo is an infinitely photogenic city. And there’s no shortage of photographers capturing its vibrant landscape. But local resident and photography aficionado Masashi Wakui has a unique, surreal style of capturing Tokyo by night and making it look like an animated still from Akira or a Ghibli film. Wakui has a penchant for the backstreets of Tokyo, specifically those with plenty of lanterns, streetlights and neon signs that only add to the surreal, cinematic quality of the scene. And those who have spent any number of nights wandering these streets will find Wakui’s photos achingly captivating.Once the scene is captured Wakui then digitally manipulates the image, giving it a color grading effect that works perfectly with his busy nighttime cityscapes. There are tutorials that have even sprouted up, analyzing the “Masashi Wakui Look,” as its been coined. Photomanipulations by Robert Houzar

Robert Houzar is a Prague, Czech Republic based artist working with high resolution photography. The main topic of his work is transformation and movement of mass, caused by human existence.

Thanks to the method of a manipulated photography and computer collage, I can take all the mass produced by mankind and handle it completely freely, deprive it of its purpose, throw its fragments on a heap like branches in forest, crush skyscrapers in Hong Kong to small pieces and let them mould like old pieces of wood. I work with photographic material purchased mainly in big urban conglomerations such as Hong Kong, New York, Buenos Aires, Berlin, etc. High resolution of pictures enables me to create large-format prints with the most delineated details. I cut pictures of the world, create structures from structures, question them in spite of the fact I am ingrained in them.

A new study (published in PLOS Biology) investigated how bats make sharp turns in the air, particularly when they have to grab the ceiling. It turns out aerodynamics have very little to do with it - it’s all about inertia. Just as a figure skater clutches his arms to his chest to increase his speed, bats pull in their wings to help them make turns.
