“I asked a few men what comes to mind when they think about friendship. One of them said, “That used to be nice.” Another joked about a newly appreciated “miracle” of Jesus: he was a man who had twelve close friends in his thirties…”

Selah.
This passage struck me during my devotion this morning. Especially, the part in v9 about God breaking the weapons of war.
Considering what’s going on in the world and especially with going on in Ukraine and Israel right now, I look forward to a time when war and conflict have completely ceased, not because someone has a bigger weapon, but because God has settled things once, and for all.
Sadly, I rarely pause on Veterans Day to remember the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month in the year 1918, when World War I came to an end. I did today. Happy Veteran’s day.

I misread a “water cooler” comment at work… I’ll just say it included the word “colored” then a few initially words my eyes initially skipped over before landing on “children”, which as an African American landed on me different even after I did a double take to read the sentence and then scroll further up to catch the context (the pitfalls of picking a point to read and then reading in reverse order).
I used a yellow child, crayon, and skin color #5 child (my default when using skinned emojis) to comically highlight my initial reading goof… 😜
But then I wondered how we got here and whether the Simpsons have indeed have set us up for failure with regard to chances at ethnic (racial) reconciliation. A Google search later and…
This covers it quite well, albeit from someone who is on the majority skin color. Thankfully there was no attempt to speak for my ethnicity, but it is also giving some context for the “majority” side.
Btw the internal words were “… my view of …”

(My thoughts related to https://www.breakpoint.org/whats-behind-americas-great-dechurching/)
While I don't pretend to think this is what all those leaving the local church are doing, or even that it is most, what about those Christians who are sincerely following God, but have given up on churches? What about those who are coming (back) to God, but have been scarred by or jaded about the church from either personal experience or what they've seen in the news?
What is the percentage of churches that are NOT what Paul describes ?
'For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. ' 2 Timothy 4:3-4 https://my.bible.com/bible/2016/2TI.4.3-4
While I do encourage them to find a community of believers, I truly believe that those I've ran into recently that have come (back) to the Lord independent of traditional church membership have learned to do something many "church members" have forgotten to do: "know the Lord"
'But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord : I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord ,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord ; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. '
Jeremiah 31:33-34 https://my.bible.com/bible/2016/JER.31.33-34
Getting the stats on churches that are conducive for Christians that are truly seeking the Lord may not be easy to do. I advocate for a community of believers as well as local church membership, but on some level, isn't this what Christ foretold?
'Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, and he answered, “The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed; nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There it is!’ For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you.” Then he said to the disciples, “The days are coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. They will say to you, ‘Look there!’ or ‘Look here!’ Do not go, do not set off in pursuit. '
