This week has been incredible. From the moment KLAW was announced in March, to this final week, we've been met with a wave of enthusiasm - many people excited to write content for a character they love and miss, and many others who promoted the event, signal boosted posts, encouraged and supported their fellow creators in the making of all this content. This kind of love and support is why I love these character appreciation weeks. And I hope to see more of it soon!

But this is not a farewell post yet!! As mentioned in previous posts, there's an additional week for anyone who wanted to send content but couldn't, and may have it ready after some time.

So while the event is officially over today, the blog will still be open to recieve entries till 1st May! Just be sure to do the following:

Submitted works will be featured on a weekly masterlist on Sundays* (*depending on event participation)

Every form of creative work can be submitted: fanfiction, drabbles, moodboards, edits, drawings, poems, songs, sketches, and more—all are welcomed.

Work from any book and story from the Choices (and Pixelberry) universe are welcome (new and old alike)!

You can participate as many times as you want during the month

You do not need to participate daily or even weekly.

Clearly list the day/prompt your work is for

You can combine submissions for this event and others

Please use warnings to tag content that may be triggering/disturbing to some users.

If your work is NS*W please label it as such and use appropriate warnings. Adult content should be hidden under the page break.

When possible, use page breaks to limit long posts.

You can get creative with the prompts. It can be a variation of the word and/or concept. It doesn’t have to be exact or literal. If the word inspires a train of thought that led you to something different, put that in the notes and send it in! Have fun with it! Make them work for you! The ultimate goal is just to find joy in creating!

The Cursed Heart Drabble - Kieran x Elam

From this prompt and the flashback canon scene. This is for the anon that sent this ask to the April challenge blog. I would have used your MC but didn’t know which you used so I used mine. I hope you share what you created with us. I’m sure your story is beautiful and I know it is worth sharing and enjoying! I look forward to reading it, if you choose to share it <3

Warnings & A/N: I’m making some big assumptions here but don’t think I’m that far off on those assumptions. This drabble deals with the nature of monsters, some theories (I am probably waaaayyyy off on), and contains canon compliant content. Don’t like canon? Won’t like this. Theme just the facts.

Monster. That’s what they all called him. He knew it. He didn’t deny it. He knew - no, he knows - what he is. Nothing can change that.

Kieran’s long fingers toying with the vine that blossoms around the windows of his room and sighs, glancing out at the base of that climbing vine rooted in the ground below, not far from where they are gathering herbs and flowers. He watches as new growth springs from the ground where the previously harvest herbs had been.

The smile that lit Elam’s face each time the new replaced what they had taken sent a pang of guilt and something else through him. They didn’t below here, Kieran knew that. Elam knew that. The few members of his household knew that.

Elam is too kind and gentle for the harshness of his court and the woods beyond. Yet he couldn’t bring himself to break the law of the Fae, no matter how much he may want to for their sake. A part of him was selfish and needed them to stay. Needed to see their smile each day, to hear their laugh, to feel their eyes upon him.

Monsters. They are selfish creatures. It’s easy when one has no heart. One cannot change what one, what one has lost. He is a selfish creature, for he is a monster without a heart. Nature cannot be changed by any force. Monsters are proof of that. He is proof of that.

The petals beneath his finger tips were proof of that. He had magically grown this variety to reach into his room but a few days back. They are as delicate and as soft as the creature he watches below. He could crush the blossom with two fingers and - poof - it’s gone. No trace left but the stain upon him. He turns back to the delicate one below, how easily he could break them and destroy them leaving not a trace but the stain upon himself.

The warmth of spring is seeping into the air, the sun warmer now than it has been ever and the delicate white blossoms send their spicy scent into the air as he runs his hand along the tendrils of the vine. So young and malleable compared to the older tougher branches below. They smell of spring and spices.

He breaths it in deeply. Slowing, methodically allowing the air and scent to permeate his entire being. It’s a smell he’s come to associate with the person now laughing with Longclaw in the gardens below. The same flower is woven in Elam’s hair and is but a constant reminder of them. One that lingers, not unwelcomed, in his home.

Monster. He repeats the word to himself again and again. He is to be feared. Run from. Avoided at all costs. Monsters are the stuff of bedtime stories told to frighten young children into obedience. He is that monster the stories tell of.

Monsters do not care for things that don’t feed their needs or suit their purposes. No, they care for nothing but darkness, blood, destruction. They care only for themselves and what other creatures can provide them.

He is a monster. A creature that is a shadow of himself. A monster without a heart.

So, why does he, a headless monster, care?

He looks out upon the gardens again and stops when he sees Elam looking up at his window, watching him. He scowls and turns away, but feels the place where his heart was pull him back towards Elam, he pauses, but forces himself to turn from the window in a huff.

He doesn’t care.

He is but a creature without a heart. He is the monster they should fear.

Run, he whispers.

Elam watched as Kieran turns from the window. An unreadable look had crossed his features as their eyes met. Something softer than the darkness that they frequently see lay within those dark as night depths. Elam’s chest warming, and racing, as if two beats flooded their body with feeling, that strange feeling originating within their heart.

Lomgclaw says something to them that they don’t catch, too lost in their thoughts and what had passed so swiftly but that had felt like an eternity. They apologized out of habit, forcing their attention back to her.

She smiled, a strange thing of a smile with something unspoken lingering behind her eyes, and took the basket from Elam. A warm, heavy paw upon his shoulder as she turned, instructing them on the last herbs and flowers to gather as she headed back into the kitchen.

Elam walked the grounds looking for the plants they needed. Stopping to smell flowers they didn’t recognize by sight but finding some they knew by smell as being ones grown magically within the palace itself.

They stopped short when they noticed a darker flower tucked in the corner of the garden, hidden away from the rest. It was wild and uncontrolled. It’s blossom the darkest of midnights with specks of glimmering starlight upon them. And a center that glowed as bright as the moon. Large, dangerous thorns like claws lined the stems of each flower.

As they stepped closer into the garden alcove, they recognized the scent. It was strangely comforting in a same sort of way his eyes were when he looked upon them during evening meals or when passing each other in the hallways. There was a beauty to that danger.

Winged Beast. Monster. Elam had heard the villagers whisper it as if afraid that to speak it would be to summon the creature.

A winged monster that Elam had said they would show love and kindness to. A fearsome creature that they would befriend. That’s what they had told their father so long ago when reality was naught but a fairytale.

They ducked their head to smell the blossom again. It was the scent of a monster. A fearsome comfort of night and shadows. They glanced back up to Kieran’s window.

Monsters, Elam was learning, were not as the village fairytales had led them to believe. Monsters were something else. Perhaps caution must be mixed with compassion. One doesn’t wish to die by the sharp teeth of such a creature but what if that hideous beast’s month holds those sharp teeth not as a means of death but as a warning? What if the notion of monsters was all wrong? What if you aren’t meant to flee but you are meant to heed and listen?

Elam glanced from the flowers to the windows again and gathered a bunch of the blooms in their arm, taking care to avoid the large thorns that lined the branches. They may not posses the magic required to have them bloom on the walls their bedroom but they could bring that beauty there in a vase.

For Elam was finding their is beauty in the monstrous.
