Check out theseļæ¼ film casesļæ¼ ļæ¼ļæ¼From Kodak, looks like theyāll be around $25. Theyāre a little bit more expensive than the Japan Camera Hunter cases. These cases are made out of steel instead of plastic, reminiscent of the individual 35mm film canisters of the 1970sļæ¼.
Itās nice to see new product coming out from Kodak.ļæ¼

This article kind of takes a stance that if there arenāt new cameras being developed that the film industry is on its way to extinction.
The remaining camera manufacturers namely Leica are cost prohibitive, forcing hobbyists/enthusiasts into the used gear pool to find equipment.
Likely if new manufacturers or older ones that produced film cameras in the past are to get back in the game their products will also likely be cost prohibitive.Ā This will again force hobbyists and enthusiasts back into the used gear pool.
Having dipped into this used gear pool for over ten years now I count myself those that bemoan the prospects of passing up those sought after cameras that are now ridiculously priced for what they are.
But also having dipped in the pool I can say that it made me smarter to veer away from electronic equipment, and stick to those fully manual offerings or ones that can still be used in full manual mode (even if the electronics are shot).Ā I want to say that if you exclude those fully electronic cameras youāll have many viable options for years to come.
Also with the industry growing it fails to factor in the possibility of niche small companies developing gear, and also companies that re-purposing used gear.Ā One example of a company filling that niche is Camera RescueĀ https://camerarescue.org/Ā (IG @camerarescue).Ā As the market grows, which it seems to still be growing, more will come.
Finally, I have felt off and on (mostly on) that if you are adopting electronic cameras in lieu of manual gear to shoot film you are missing a good deal of the point of shooting film, and putting yourself out of touch with the roots of film as well as the process. If you seek a fully automatic electronic experience, shoot digital.Ā Digital after all is the culmination of decades of development of film and film gear to achieve the highest standards possible in image quality, ease of use, and full control (or as near as possible) over all aspects of your image.

52Rolls2020 Ā· Roll 2 Ā· Olympus Pen F
Published date 1.26.19
Olympus Pen F
Olympus F. Zuiko Auto-S 38mm 1.8
Kodak Gold 400 (fresh) R8405
Acquisition
The goal of the Olympus Pen F was to grab a camera I have been interested in for quite a while.Ā The only thing holding me back was the availability of good examples at a decent price. Ā The SchmeeBay notified me of one for a decent price, I bid and won.Ā It was also important to have the F model over the FT. Ā I may pick up an FT body in the future, but I wanted to start with the F.
Also of note ā¦ I suggest buying this camera with a lens.Ā There is a certain weakness in the design that can make the camera appear fully functional when the lens is not mounted.Ā However due to tension when mounting the lens, the same camera with the lens mounted can fail to fire, fail to return the mirror, not fully advance the film or all of the above.Ā My example of this camera would not fire consistently with the lens mounted, and led me to a repair. Ā In my case I was able to repair it on my own, but it wasnāt a quick and easy thing that I would recommend people try.Ā For this reason alone, I feel that if you buy this camera with a lens, youāll have a better chance at getting one that functions 100% out of the gate.
History and Features
Olympus is a well known and loved camera company with a cultish fan base from its wide array of point and shoot cameras in the 90s, back to the OM SLR series, in the 70s, and finally back to the Pen F camera in 1963.Ā The Pen F itself seems like it was marketed to photojournalists for the small form factor, and increased frame counts from being a half frame camera.
The Olympus Pen F is an interchangeable lens SLR camera that shoots 35mm film in half frame portrait format.Ā The Pen F has a focal plane shutter from B to 500, a portrait mode SLR style viewfinder, a flash sync contact that syncs at all speeds (interesting for a focal plane shutter camera), a weird rectangular shutter button with a threaded cable release, a slotted mount on the eye piece to mount accessories (more on this in usage), a proper film counter, a simple rewind button, and an offset tripod bush.Ā The best and most important feature of the Pen F is the gothic F logo on the front of the camera, yeah.
Appearance
The Pen F is an elegant camera with old world styling, sporting classic chrome over brass, and a gridded black leatherette covering ā¦ SLR style, itās hard to beat the looks of the Pen F.Ā The gothic F logo engraved on the front of the camera and echoed again in grandiose style on the lens cap, make this camera one of the most iconic in the Olympus lineup, and camera history in general.
Usage
In practice the Pen F is a film SLR, with three minor differences.Ā The first difference is that the camera is a double-stroke, meaning it takes two actuations of the film advance lever to cock the shutter and advance the film.Ā The second difference is that the finder is in portrait format. Ā To make a landscape photo you have to turn the camera 90 degrees, much like you would do on a normal SLR to take a portrait mode photo.Ā The last noticeable difference, most modern film SLRs have the shutter knob or dial on the top plate of the camera. Ā On the Pen F the shutter dial is mounted on the front face of the camera right under the shutter release.Ā Also as this is an interchangeable lens camera the aperture dials are on each individual lens. Ā Loading and focusing are the same as a modern film SLR, so I wonāt go over those things.
A few observations; the focus throw is very short ā¦ maybe due to the compact nature of the system and the smaller size of the lenses. I used the 38mm 1.8 to make these images, Iām not sure if that differs on other lenses.Ā The viewfinder lacks a split image or micro prism screen, which makes focusing difficult if you have old man eyes like mine. Ā I hear tell that the FT model has the split image on the screen. Ā However, I skipped the FT model, because I wasnāt interested in the meter, and this camera since it is so small made some sacrifices to make that meter possible.Ā In the Pen cameras the mirror for the finder is very small, and the meter in the FT required the mirror to be semi-transparent. Ā All of that said the transparent mirror makes the finder on the FT about Ā½ to a full stop dimmer that the F model. Ā Also the meter sounds like a good idea ā¦ but in practice that meter is not coupled, meaning it will give you a suggestion and you have to set the camera manually anyway.Ā The dimmer finder, a non-coupled meter, and a hard to find mercury battery or replacement battery were all factors in my choosing the Pen F, over the newer FT model. Ā Additionally the FT model is missing the goth F logo on the front of the camera; dealbreaker.
If you know me you probably know I like to shoot a lot of street photos.Ā I had a little difficulty shooting this camera zone-style. Ā It may be just me, but the short focus throw of the lens was difficult to get accustomed to ā¦ I think this was totally me though.Ā Focusing the camera straight though was pretty hard for me too because of my old man eyes. Ā Another factor of zone-style shooting on half frame doesnāt come out until you look at the negatives.Ā Zone focusing at a small aperture (f8 or higher) accounts for a forgiveness factor when focusing, you can preset your focus and shoot when your subject is within a certain distance give or a take a foot in front of the mark or behind the mark.Ā Since the focus throw is so short, zone focusing with this camera is much less forgiving than a full frame camera. Ā Also since the film size is much smaller any focusing mistakes you make are increased due to the smaller size of the film area. Ā Focusing with the camera up to your eye is pretty essential, and my photos show it.Ā If you donāt shoot street or zone-style youāll never notice any of this.
Half frame format is both a boon and a bane.Ā The big pro is density ā¦ you get DOUBLE THE FUN! Since the cameras film gate is 18x24 vs the 36x24 of full frame you get twice the number of photos on a roll.Ā A 24 exposure roll will yield 48 photos or more. Ā More because if you load your film correctly, on most manual cameras you can get up to 27 shots from 24 roll, and 39 from a 36 roll.Ā Same for a 36 exposure roll you will get 72 or more shoots. Ā Itās a boon! Ā You get so many more shots! Ā Itās a bane to me because 72 shots is a real commitment ā¦ it literally takes me forever unless Iām at a big event.Ā The first time I shot this camera it took me like two months to go through one 36 exposure roll. Ā So I make it a point to only load this camera with a 24 exposure roll or if I can find them older 12 or 20 exposure rolls.Ā Half frame is also a bane for modern film, 400 film comes out kind of on the grainy side. Ā Iāll have to take that into consideration to shoot something a little slower next time like between like 160 to 250. Ā I also have some Ferrania P30 (iso80) Iād like to try in the Pen F as well.
Also remember that this cameras viewfinder is vertical, all normal photos you take with the camera horizontally will be in portrait mode.Ā This is an interesting change to mostly landscaped photos, and makes some of the photos you will take seem a little more down to earth or personal.Ā In the digital mobile phone age this may not seem like that big of a deal, but I see where it could lend some new inspiration here and there.
This camera has a focal plane shutter, and yet itās flash will sync with any speed.Ā This is unusual for a focal plane shutter camera, which usually only sync at 1/60 of a second.Ā I donāt shoot flash though so I probably will never test this.
Iām still getting used to this camera, and I think it has more to offer.Ā My samples didnāt come out as well as Iād hoped Also normally choose recently shot photos from the week before but this time I included a few samples from Ā last summer to round out the out the field ā¦ Iāll have to shoot it more SLR style next time with slower film.Ā Ā
PROS
Great lens offerings
unique flash system
Half frame
CONS
For me it is difficult scanning Half frame images
no split image in the viewfinder
Miniature formats can be problematic

52Rolls2020 Ā· Roll 1 Ā· Werra Werramatic 3
52Rolls2020 Ā· Roll 1 Ā· Werra Werramatic 3
Published 01.19.2020
Werra Werramatic 3
Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50mm 2.8
TMAX 400 (expired 2002)
Acquisition
This was an ebay purchase, as follow up purchase to the Werra 3 I bought back in 2017. Iāve had this camera for a year or so before shooting it. I think I had purchased it in hopes to shoot it back in the 2017 as a comparison to the Werra 3, but it didnāt arrive in time (go overseas shipping!).
History and features
VEB Carl Zeiss Jena factory in Eisfeld built the Werra from a 7 month design cycle to a production lasting twelve years on an abandoned production line. This company formerly produced scientific optical equipment for the military. The factory was on the Werra river henceforth the name of the camera. Iāve read a few sources that said it was an award winning design but couldnāt find any citations of what awards it won. The production run for this camera was between 1954-1966. The rounded corners on this model place it in the 60s. Information on precise dates is hard to come by.
This Werramatic is a 35mm rangefinder outfitted with a Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm 2.8, a prestor shutter from B to 500, and an aperture from 2.8 up to 22. There is a threaded shutter, a self timer, a pc sync terminal, a super crappy film counter, and an old school 3/8ā tripod bush.
The Werramatic also sports an interchangeable lens system. In addition to the included kit Tessar, there is a Flektogon 35mm 2.8, and a Cardinar 100mm 4. Iāve also seen a few other accessories like a closeup lens kit, and some other jazz I probably also wonāt buy. Iām mildly interested in the Flektogon but the price will probably scare me away.
Appearance
The Werramatic has a unique and minimalist design that sets it apart from other cameras of the time in both form and function. The brushed aluminum top is the most striking with its smooth curved corners, and virtually no other controls other than the shutter button.
The camera is lacking a traditional film advance lever (more on this later), and there is a plastic lens cover that matches the camera leather that covers the whole lens assembly giving the camera a little more sleekness, on top of the already sleek and minimal design. The lens cover can be reversed and screwed onto the camera to double as a lens hood.
Usage
The workflow of the Werramatic is unique among 35mm cameras. I mentioned that this camera doesnāt have a traditional film advance lever. In place of the lever is a ring around the lens barrel, that you turn. Almost a quarter turn of the lens both advances the film and cocks the shutter. The ring is covered in the same leather that covers the camera. So while this workflow is different is also devilishly simple. Choose your settings, click the shutter, and turn the ring. The ring is fun to turn when the camera has no film. But when the camera is loaded it becomes pretty stiff, and itās sort of worrisome that it may break or break the film. But after a few rolls through this and the Werra 3; no problems.
The aperture and shutter settings are both rings around the lens barrel. The rings are independent of each other but can be moved together to shoot EV style. My example of the camera however, makes this difficult as they slip when turned together. One of the pleasures of working with something old, you have to learn to compensate. This differs from the Werra 3 which locks both the shutter and aperture rings together making it sort of mandatory to shoot EV style.
Iāve never shot with Tessar lenses much, but Iāve heard good and bad things. What I noticed is that it doesnāt have a lot of contrast, but can be pretty sharp stopped down. But always nice character, and a very vintage feel.
Shooting with the Werra, isnāt the best due to its age, but in itās prime I could see how it would be very appealing. If I set it and forget it, the flow is pretty good, and its easy to shoot zone focus style. Iām happy with the Werra cameras, they always get an oooh, or aaah, and the Zeiss lineup is pretty cool.
PROS
Very unusual minimal design
Zeiss Glass
CONS
A lot of these classics, seem that they are a step or two away from maintenance
This camera isnāt widely available in the US, and may require shipping

St. Louis 10.19.18 Olympus Pen F Digital (unedited) . I received my Yashica Y35 digifilm camera from Kickstarter today. You may have read some shit ass, jive talkin reviews about it so far. Here are my first impressions. . Ok the build is horrible, agreed. The backdoor latch is janky and will probably break, agreed. The SD card door will probably come off, agreed. I couldnāt get it to work out of the box. I blame me for that for not reading the sparse instructions correctly. All of the other reports of it doesnāt work are probably from not reading about it too much. Once I RTFM I was good to go without issues. . Here was my biggest issue the shutter button is a two click process, half click for god knows what, and then press down again and HOLD until you hear the shutter click sound. Reports of no picture written to the card is probably from this. If you donāt hear that shutter click sound it didnāt take the picture, and nothing is written to the SD card. There is also a considerable shutter lag to click time. . The fake film advance is LOUD AS FUCK. The shutter clicks are LOUD AS FUCK. Couple those things with the shutter lag, and this thing is going to not fare well on the street. . Also, Itās not a scam, the company just isnāt replying to emails, or kickstarter messages. I wonāt give them the benefit of the doubt there, but it could be language barriers. . Iāll take it for spin tonight, and post some picture samples tomorrow or Saturday. . . #elffyb #stl #olympuspenf #digital #yashica #y35 #yashicay35 #review #blogpost #kickstarter #staybrokeshootfilm #filmisnotdead #filmisalive #fakefilm #digifilm #filmhybrid #digitalhybrid #wlvf (at St. Louis) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpIcr_dgs9m/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=125fegri85hq0
