Drabble

“Nat. Nat. Natalie. Nat. Natalie. Nat,” the dead teen loudly whispered into his not-quite-sister’s ear. “Nat, I know you hear me. You know I’m here. Natalie.”

Natalie had never said anything out loud to him, but he caught her staring at him enough times for him to know it wasn’t coincidental. She saw him. And he was gonna get her to admit it, dammit!

“Natalie Marie Goodman, you answer your brother right now,” he commanded. Nothing. But he couldn’t help but notice her muscles tense when he said “brother.” He grinned. There was the chink in the armor.

He couldn’t touch her, because she had to accept he was real before they could have physical contact. But he hovered his hand above her shoulder. “Invisible Girl. Hey. I know you’re used to not having anyone talk to you, but generally, you’re supposed to respond when they do. Especially when it’s your amazing perfect brother.”

“You’re not my fucking brother.”

Gabe blinked, surprised. He didn’t expect her to give in that easy...and he didn’t like her answer at all. “The fuck do you mean, I’m not your brother? I’m literally your brother!”

“No, you’re not!” She whirled around to face him, fire in her eyes. “I am an only child, I don’t have a brother! And you’re just a hallucination anyway!”

He sighed. So close. “Nat-“

“Don’t fucking call me that.”

“-Natalie, I’m real. I’m your brother. Let me be a brother to you,” he finished sweetly.

Natalie was about to protest, but she hesitated. She’d always wanted someone to look out for her. She dreamed about having a big brother to fill that role...She quickly reminded herself that this wasn’t the person. “What, so you can try to get me to kill myself like you did with Mom? With my mom, she’s not yours.”

Gabe flopped back onto the bed. “Look, I’m sorry-“

“Sorry?! You’re sorry?! Oh, fuck you. Fuck you so much.” She kicked him in the stomach, hard. Seeing him keel over, she grinned. But it quickly faded when she saw him look up with a smirk on his face. “What?”

“You touched me. That means I’m more real to you than before. You’re starting to believe me.”

Her stomach dropped. Fuck. “Fuck you. Fuck you, fuck off- Just get away from me already, okay?! Just go!”

“Sure. But I’ll be back, Invisible Girl. You won’t be able to get rid of me now.”

She tried to hit him again but he disappeared, laughing. Fuck...she quickly picked up her phone to text Henry. She needed some pot.
