have some widojest fake dating on this monday morning
As far as infiltration plans go, this one isn’t half bad. The worst part is that it relies entirely on Jester and Caleb to complete the mission while the rest of the Nein schmooze elsewhere. As they approach the hotel, Caleb just repeats the plan in his head.
All they need to do is break into the proprietor’s office and find the documents they need. They have two days to do that, it’s more than enough time. They could do it in their sleep, but Caleb can’t help the anxiety brewing inside him.
He knows it’s not because of their plan, it’s because of his proximity to Jester. They have never been together without the rest of the party. With Jester, he doubts it can be awkward, but what terrifies him is that she could discover his feelings for her. Feelings he’s tried to shove down to the recesses of his soul. It never works; they always seem to bubble back up.
When they enter the hotel, Caleb smiles at the clerk and squeezes Jester into his side. For her part, she leans into him and curls her tail around his leg. “Good afternoon,” Caleb greets, “my wife and I are checking in for the banquet tomorrow. Lord and Lady Highforest”
And that is the rub. In order to be here without arousing suspicion, they need to play the part of a husband and wife. They stole the identities of two of the attendees, ensuring them a room and a ticket to the banquet.
The man nods, “Alright, your rooms have already been paid for, Lord Highforest. I’ll have an attendant bring your bags up to your room shortly.” The man passes them two keys with the number six engraved on them.
“Thank you!” Jester grins and pockets both of the keys.
“Would we also have some additional pillows and blankets sent up?” Caleb asks, “I’m quite a finicky sleeper.”
The clerk nods, “Of course, I’ll let the attendant know.”
“Thank you,” Caleb smiles once more at the clerk before squeezing Jester’s hand and guiding her to the stairs. Once they’re out of eyesight, he lets her go. To his surprise, she keeps her tail around his ankle, perhaps she forgot.
Though he can practically feel Jester vibrating with the need to say something, they remain quiet until the door of the hotel room is safely bolted behind them.
Jester smiles at him, showing off her fangs, “It worked!”
Caleb tries to suppress a smile and tells her, “Don’t get too excited now, blueberry, that was the easy part.”
Jester rolls her eyes and flops on the bed. She sighs happily, kicking off her shoes. Caleb forces himself to look away from her, instead he begins to set up an Alarm around the room.
After a few minutes, there’s a knock on the door and both of their suitcases as well as the requested pillows and blankets are brought into their room. Caleb tips and thanks the attendant.
Sitting up on the bed, Jester watches him curiously as he begins to form a make-shift bed on the carpet.
“What are you doing, Caleb?” She asks, sliding over to sit on the edge of the bed for a better vantage of what he’s doing.
“Making myself a bed.”
Her brow furrows, “But there’s a perfectly good one up here.”
Caleb looks up at her patiently, “You’re sleeping in the bed, shatz.”
She rolls her eyes in the most dramatic way she can, “It’s a huge fucking bed, Caleb. I’m not going to take up the whole thing. Besides, you always complain that your back hurts when we sleep on the ground. Share the bed with me. I promise I won’t bite you.”
She winks and he gives her a dry look. “I don’t wish to make you uncomfortable.”
Jester rolls her eyes again, even more dramatically, “I’m literally asking you to, Caleb.”
Caleb sighs and stands up, “Alright. But you have to promise you’ll tell me to move if you decide you don’t want to share any more.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever,” Jester rolls off the bed and pads over to her suitcase. Caleb watches her for a moment as she starts unpacking her dress for tomorrow night, smoothing out the wrinkles.
Two nights. That’s it. Caleb can keep it together until then. Tonight, the banquet, and then leaving the following morning. He can do this without making a fool of himself or making Jester uncomfortable. Can’t he?
