On "Atticus Finch"

I’d just like to remind everybody, in case no one was aware, that J.R.R. Tolkien first conceived of Frodo Baggins as “Bingo Bolger-Baggins.” He was a very different character, who played a very different role in a virtually unrecognizable story.

The same can be said of Atticus Finch.

“Go Set a Watchman” was written before “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Though it’s set later chronologically, it’s not a sequel, nor is “Mockingbird” a prequel. They’re different stories, using different characters who diverged from the same source.

Characters mutate over the course of writing, to the point that several different characters emerge to suit the story as it solidifies in the writer’s mind. The character named Atticus Finch in “Watchman” was written to serve a function in that particular story – and “Mockingbird” is served in a different way by a similar, yet disctinct, character who is also named Atticus Finch.

It has already been confirmed that the two novels DO NOT share a continuity. In “Watchman,” it is mentioned that Tom Robinson was acquitted of his rape charges, which obviously didn’t happen in “Mockingbird.” Different stories, different characters, different fictional universes.

So let’s not say that “Atticus Finch has become a racist,” but rather that he was originally conceived as a racist.
