The first name was called sooner than Jem wanted to listen, his name, trailing through the silence.

He smiled. 

It's better this way. 

But when he started to take a step-

"I volunteer as tribute." 

The words, quietly spoken and yet, the loudest thing Jem had ever heard rang through his mind. He glanced over in the direction of who had spoken, even though he knew, he knew, oh how he knew, but maybe, if there was even the slightest chance- 

"I, William Herondale, volunteer as tribute."

Not you, Will. Please, not you. Don't do this for me. Not when I'm already destined to die. 

Jem closed his eyes as Will climbed the steps up to the platform, the sounds echoing through the near silent courtyard. 

"Will." Jem whispered, barely a breathe. Yet, Will still looked at him, looked at him as if he had heard, looked at him with those steady blue eyes and nodded. Jem shook his head, barely, fists tightening as he stared, stared and waited for the other name to be called. 

"Theresa Gray." 

And Jem felt his heart crack a little. 

But Tessa didn't falter as she walked up the steps, gaze meeting Will's and then Jem, back held straight even as her eyes watered with unfallen tears. 

Jem loses himself, the rest of the day passing in a blur of events until Tessa was in front of him, holding his hand and promising. 

"He's going to come home." 

"Tessa-" 

She only shook her head, smiling, soft, gentle, and warm. "I'll make sure he comes home." And when Jem didn't protest, when he only wrapped his arms around her and didn't let go, only then did Tessa allow herself to cry, wrapped in Jem's arms.

They stood like that, for a moment, until a voice called, "Jem." 

"Will." He answerd softly. Everything else went dim, the world fading around him as he raised his head. He wasn't sure when Tessa slipped away, but he knew Will would find her later either way. 

Jem looked Will in the eyes, "How could you?" He asked, voice trembling with anger and sadness and regret and something else. Something that fell past the lines of feelings and emotions, the very same thing that had Will flashing a smile that fell just as fast as it appeared. 

"For you, Jem, I could do anything." 

He shook his head, sucking in a sharp breathe. "No, you don't get to do this. Why would you make this decision for me? You know I'm not going to live-" 

Will cut him off, sharply, "Don't." 

Jem sighed, "I cannot forgive you for this." 

"I know." 

Jem looked away. "Live, and come back to me." 

"I will." 

"I cannot, will not, live without you." Jem said, turning back to Will. "So you are going to come back, and I will not forgive you but at least you'll be by my side again."
