A lot of stories come through our Media Center.  Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at one of our favorites!
The Buzz, Annenberg Media’s weekly entertainment show, hit the SAG Awards red carpet even before the celebrities did. Emily Lee and Ivana Nguyen got a special look at the work that goes into putting an awards show on air.
Emily Lee - Buzz Producer
It's crazy to think that as a student journalist, we're able to take our bare minimum, point-and-shoot cameras and tripods and cover red carpets and movie premieres.
This coverage was different from the previous events I went to.
We went behind-the-scenes of the SAG Awards and saw what it took for the committee to put on the fancy show we see every year on TV. As someone who enjoys working behind-the-scenes, I was very excited to cover this event (mostly because I got to #PartywithGarcetti).
It is never easy to get to the front of the lines. We always have to fight (trying to stay friendly, of course) to get to the front. A perk of a small, handy camera is we can stick it in between people’s heads.
The event kicked off, literally, with Mayor Eric Garcetti, Scandal’s Kaite Lowes, Orange is the New Black’s Lea DeLaria, and other members of the SAG Awards Committee rolling out the carpet. It took them two times to get it right, which involved Garcetti missing a kick and rolling it back himself.
Diversity in awards have been a buzzing topic recently, so we decided to ask people for their advice on how to bring women into the entertainment industry. That worked really well because they had a lot to say and their responses complemented each other very well.
Because we had great content and already had an idea of where we were going with this, putting together the actual package was not too difficult. Tracking and editing took about two hours, and voila! We got our first Buzz package for the semester!
Ivana Nguyen - Buzz Reporter
Everybody loves to watch award shows, but most people don’t know what goes into the preparation for the event. Our goal at The Buzz was to give an inside look at the SAG Awards and share a story that goes beyond what happens in the show. Diversity has become a huge issue in the entertainment industry and we interviewed actors and SAG Awards execs about what can be done about it.
The press line, where all of the news outlets wait to get SOTs or b-roll, was chaotic, but it was still so much fun. When Mayor Eric Garcetti, Katie Lowes, Scandal and Lea DeLaria, Orange is the New Black, rolled out the red carpet, everyone was crammed in a tight space. We had to work as team to get the best visuals and sounds.
Overall the experience was so exciting and it was very helpful to have such great team members!
