I have a friend whose stories were posted on a password-protected site. Then some clever dick decided the world needed them translated into German. So, he translated the stories without the author's permission and posted them on FB for all the world to see. When she found out, naturally she reached out to him. He didn't understand what the big deal was. She explained what copyright violation means, and he shrugged. His worst punishment was being banned from the site he stole the stories from.

ALWAYS GET THE AUTHOR'S PERMISSION!

Full stop.

Especially if the source material is no longer under the author's copyright, like Jane Austen.

Is it ethical to use AI to translate fanworks?

Question: How do we feel about using services like Google Translate or DeepL to read fanfiction in other languages?

Considerations :

Authors can do whatever they want with their original works- including putting it through an AI translation app, and third party translations should NEVER be posted without the original author’s permission, whether done by humans or AI. The question is about using AI translation for personal use only.

Most AI grammar and translation services will use data put through them to improve the model. This has different implications than generative AI, since the product is the translation or proofreading, not the content itself.

It is possible that the majority of TAG fandom wants to burn John’s shirt.

In fact, I believe @willow-salix already attempted it? Or was that his dressing gown?

But anyway, burning John’s shirt...

The question remains as to how many people want to:

Burn his shirt and replace it with something more stylish

Burn his shirt so he has no shirt and the scenery improves

Burn his shirt with John still in it and then nurse him back to health

All of the above.

Hehehehehe...

As for Virgil, no one needs to burn his shirt cos we’re all sick of drawing plaid and end up yanking it off anyway to save our sanity.

Or...because Grandma is likely late Gen-X (or Xennial), she was the one who introduced Max to Culture Club and Boy George (amongst all the other amazing bands of that era).

Although I haven't watched much TOS (marionettes creep me out), I feel like John is the most different between series. In TOS, he's too busy being a brilliant PhD astrophysicist, author, eye-in-the-sky to come down from Five. And in TAG, he's just introverted. (He likes people*, just in numbers smaller than 3**. I'm looking at you Fischer.)

*he really liked Ridley.

** excepting family, ofc.

For me I think it's certainly not Scott or Virgil. But I can't decide between the other three. John has a lot more screen time and has time to develop a personality in TAG, while he's kind of ignored in TOS. Gordon is a lot quieter in TOS and is more of a joker in TAG. But Alan is much younger in TAG and a lot more growing to do. So what do you guys think?

I don’t care if this comes off as cruel but you are not entitled to fanfiction. You are not entitled to podfics. You are not entitled to translated works.

Creators are not paid to make fanworks. People spend years of their lives writing fic and getting nothing in return except positive interactions. You can ask to make a translation. You can ask to make a pod fic. But you cannot demand it.

And because the only thing fanfic writers get in return for their work is positive feedback, taking away an authors ability to receive that is disgusting. Authors deserve to have full control and ownership of their works.

Fanfic isn’t a product to consume and then demand more of. Authors and creators deserve better.
