hot take incoming: revolt and revolution doesn't create a fair and equitable society. it creates a power vaccum, which is terrifying because it is incredibly fertile ground for all sorts of warlords, aspiring tyrants, paramilitary extremists, and imperial powers to swoop in and start doing atrocities over it. You can put a new society in a power vaccum, but so can anyone else, and most of those potential outcomes are going to be horrifying, not to mention to the hellscape interim period.

To create a fair and equitable society you need to know civics, administration, diplomacy, and yes, statecraft. Yes they're boring and unglamorous and icky and gross. But i promise that you need them. They are mandatory. Not optional.

it cracks me up that there was a secret society of American journalists who, from 1965 to 2006, slipped the phrase "it was as if some occult hand..." into articles

this all started when one guy used the phrase in an article and his friends thought it was so hilariously out of place that they all started using it

it drove their editors crazy but they kept doing it

that was like. the whole thing. they called it the Order of the Occult Hand and all it did was put a random metaphor into as many news articles as possible

they picked a new phrase in the early 00s, which has not been revealed yet- to my knowledge

Esoteric arts: Archaeologists at Pompeii in Italy have found what they believe is a female sorcerer’s box of objects. The magnificent little miniature amulets, gems, and other items were found in the remains of a wooden box at Casa del Giardino, and were most likely used for personal ornamentation or protection from evil forces and bad luck. Among the objects found were crystals, buttons made of bones, phallic amulets, and a glass bead engraved with the head of Dionysus.

dumbledore thinks voldemort's old name is some huge secret but i don't think it is really. yeah it's probably not generally known, but I think Voldemort may not care as much about hiding it as Dumbledore assumes.

It's notable that Dumbledore also says people who knew tom riddle are reluctant to talk about him. that would only be true if they knew who he became. people wouldn't be worried about offending some random dude who graduated years ago, became a clerk at Borgin and Burkes and then disappeared. They would be very wary though of bandying about information about Lord Voldemort with someone he considers an enemy.

Also Voldemort openly discusses his muggle father and the fact that his father gave him his name in front of his Death Eaters. So I don't think it's some super duper mega ultra secret. Yeah he doesn't like or use his old name and most people probably don't connect Voldemort with Tom Riddle. But I don't think he's that invested in hiding the truth.

The thing he actually is secretive about is his mother's side of the family. He proudly touts his Slytherin lineage but makes no mention of how how exactly he's descended from Slytherin. Probably partly because he has a Horcrux hidden in the Gaunt home. And also partly because the Gaunts would be very looked down on by wealthy, powerful Pureblood families so he'd lose the glamor that an association with Salazar Slytherin grants him.
