Shadow and Bone Review
Tumblr media
So now that my finals week are over, I can finally binge watch Shadow and Bone series and after finishing all the episodes I do have mixed feelings.
Disclaimer: This review might contain spoiler. If you havenā€™t watched the show proceeds at your own risk.
Shadow and Bone Netflix series definitely blows my mind away. The whole crew and production team did a really good job in creating the whole atmosphere of Grishaverse. The costume is immaculate. It really amazed me how the Keftas turned out (Those embroideries tho). Although there are some awkward slow-motion effects here and there, I can say that is a minor thing and can be overlooked (I guess).
And then we have this amazing cast. The actors did a very good job in making their characters come to life, especially the crows. Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, and Kit Young are definitely the dream team. Now, can we talk about Kitā€™s acting tho, He just plays Jesper so well. When the show gets a bit depressing, I can always count on Kit to lighten up the mood for a while and had a good laugh.
And last, definitely not least, the inclusivity. I remember, in one of her interviews, Leigh Bardugo specifically said that she wanted to make the show more inclusive and it really delivered.

Now, there are quite major things that makes me have a mixed feelings about the show. While it did a good job in bringing the whole atmosphere of the story together, it did not explain the storyline, especially SAB storyline, that well. From a fan perspective of course, they are able to understand whatā€™s happening on the show because they have read the book first. But for the general audience, I can see why Itā€™s confusing for them.
First of all, the show fails to explain the Grisha and their Keftaā€™s Hierarchy (pls check here if you want to know more). I have read the whole SAB trilogy, and I must admit that it is quite hard to memorize the whole Grisha classifiation and their order (or maybe itā€™s because Iā€™m bad at memorizing things in the first place). From that alone, some people might have a hard time understanding what Heartrenders, Durasts, Squallers, etc2 do and why different order have different color on their keftas (both the cloth and embroidery. Yes, the color of the embroidery also vary depending on their facts :)).
Second, and this is the issue I also find with the book, is just the political atmosphere of the Grisaverse. There is a lot going on with SAB storyline ngl; for example, the fold issue, The whole Morozova and amplifier situation, separatist movement in the West Ravka, conflicts between Ravka and ShÅ« Han and Fjerda (this contributes to racism toward Alina). The show and the book donā€™t quite cover all of it and I find myself struggling to fully understand whatā€™s going on (or maybe I just dumb idk).
The other is, Alinaā€™s struggle in adapting in the Little Palace. Now, Alina is just a Cartographer from the first army who recently discovered as a sun summoner because of an unfortunate event. So, we can safely say that she doesnā€™t have control over her power yet and bad combat skill in general. The Grisha, on the other hand, has already went through hard training from an early age so Alina definitely at a disadvantage here. But as the story progress, Alina become stronger and finally able to manipulate the sun and weaponize it through hard training with Bahgra and Botkin. From my perspective, the show just kind of make this as a side-line which is a pity bcs, these training and her struggle is a major character development for Alina. And donā€™t talk to me about Botkin, Iā€™m still salty about him, the show definitely did him dirty.
Tumblr media
Lastly, the Mal situation. Now I know a lot of you are grateful that the show kind of erase Mal asshole-ish(?) actions, but thatā€™s just a part of Malā€™s character development. The fact that he doesnā€™t really notice Alina at the beginning, messing around with Zoya and other girls, and other problematic things is because heā€™s this attractive Jock and ā€œmaleā€ character. After Alinaā€™s been taken away from him, he finally realized just how much she meant for him. And that is what makes Mal willing to go through hell and back for Alinaā€™s sake. Mal also become the reason why Alina always holding back, why letting him go or basically saying F U to him makes her able to have full control over her power, and yes it also triggers the infatuation/brief romance between the Darkling and Alina. For me, I think itā€™s better to just portray Mal as he is, and create a better reformed Mal later on the storyline.
At the end of the day, this show only has 8 episodes so itā€™s understandable that it cannot tell the story thoroughly and what really matters is that we all had a good time watching it. Now hereā€™s Milo and Jesper for you guys who made it this far.

ok but real talk, I saw 1917 again (3rd time, I love it, wow are you guys shocked) and I justā€¦have to take a moment and appreciate the co-writer on the movie, Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Today I took the chance to listen to her on a few different podcasts, talking about this movie and you can really see what she brought to it. Iā€™ve seen a ton of war movies (I find the genre can be really interesting and enlightening, but not all of them are great of course) but what really stood out to be about 1917 wasā€¦almost the lack of violence. Of course, there are violent acts, but they arenā€™t like other war movies. But what you do see in the carnage that war leaves in its wake. Just dead bodies out in the middle of nowhereā€™s land, rotting for god knowā€™s how long. But not how they got there.Ā
Krysty said that when she was working with Sam (and he reached out to her specifically to work on this movie, so cool. I find it rare to have a female writer on a war movie) that was one of the things they really wanted to show. We know about the violence. But itā€™s about the waste of life. All these lives brought to an end, for what? They have a great scene (which she said was the hardest to write I believe) on this truck between soldiers asking just that. And itā€™s these small, quiet moments that show the little touches she brings.Ā
She had this great quote from an interview with Brief Take that said:Ā

Krysty and Sam did a fantastic job showing that aspect of the movie. Itā€™s really incredible and I donā€™t want to overhype it for people cause thatā€™s happened to me with some movies butā€¦itā€™s just an incredible movie.Ā
