The Woes of a FanFiction Author

Me: “I’m sorry I’m taking a while to write, work is really busy.” Them: “WRITE FASTER!”

WELL GEEEZ why the fuck didn’t I think of that? Hmmm... oh wow! It really is just that easy! All I have to do is just.. write... faster? OH MY GOD REVELATION!!!! YES NOW I MIRACULOUSLY HAVE ALL THE TIME I NEED TO WRITE!!!  Housework = done  work = fuck it, who needs income? family = they can fuck off friends = can get lost  NOW I SUDDENLY HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD TO WRITE FAN FICTION THAT I DON’T GET PAID FOR! And it was all thanks to the Guest who gave me the golden advice to just... write faster!

‘No thank you,’ Nanao sniffed at the very idea of breaking the rules and began to undress. Toshiro hastily turned away from the other girl and focused all his attention on Rangiku who was watching him from where she sat on her bad. 

‘Whose owl is that?’ Nanao asked.

‘Toshiro’s, he just sent me a note inviting me to Professor Aizen’s party tomorrow night,’ Rangiku said with a hint of the smile she’d had on her face before Nanao entered the room. 

‘About time,’ Nanao said briskly, ‘I was starting to think he wasn’t going to.’ 

‘So was I,’ Rangiku leaned back on the bed, staring down at the paper, her eyes flicking up to where Toshiro sat on the desk pointedly not looking in Nanao’s direction.

I re-read Bleach recently and grew a new appreciation for Kyōraku I didn’t have before

I feel personally attacked.

fic writer: I need to spend months writing a detailed backstory justifying everything I actually want to write before I can write the good part

me (internally);

me (externally): have you considered just starting at the good part? It's called in media res. It's a whole thing.

fic writer: but I have to establish-

me: characters and tropes your readers are already familiar with? The concept of an alternate universe? The reason why two characters are in a relationship, even though your reader has clicked on a story labelled as those characters being in a relationship?

fic writer: but-

me: it's okay. This isn't school. You can still get an A in fic writing without all that stuff.

me: need a hug?

Do you ever think you'll stop drawing fanart? No offense it just seems like the kind of thing you're supposed to grow out of. I'm just curious what your plans/goals are since it isn't exactly an art form that people take seriously.

Ah, fanart. Also known as the art that girls make.

Sad, immature girls no one takes seriously. Girls who are taught that it’s shameful to be excited or passionate about anything, that it’s pathetic to gush about what attracts them, that it’s wrong to be a geek, that they should feel embarrassed about having a crush, that they’re not allowed to gaze or stare or wish or desire. Girls who need to grow out of it.

That’s the art you mean, right?

Because in my experience, when grown men make it, nobody calls it fanart. They just call it art. And everyone takes it very seriously.

Defo something that would be great to hear more of! If you’re someone who is into podfic’s then I highly encourage you to get onto Fiverr, that’s the first place I went looking for a podfic recording artist and there isnt a single one on there yet, it’s a very niche area :D

I am a man on a mission, and that mission is reintroducing podficcing into the fanfiction community. Tell your friends.

(I spent 30 minutes typing out a text transcription and then Tumblr completely ate it and I saw white for a second so I’ll add an image description once I’ve calmed down)

There was a beat of silence as Nanao absorbed the information and Toshiro willed himself not to blush while Rangiku made cute cooing noises at the bird. ‘I see,’ Nanao’s voice held a note of accusation toward her best friend as she turned back away from Toshiro.

They lapsed instead into a slightly more awkward silence, as Rukia cast her eyes around the hospital wing looking for something else to discuss. 

‘You’ve put together a really strong team this year,’ Ichigo sounded proud and Rukia snapped her eyes back to him. He was watching her thoughtfully before he tried to sit up. 

‘You probably shouldn’t move, Madam Unohana will murder me if I hurt you anymore than I already have,’ Rukia fussed. 

‘You worried?’ he smirked and Rukia scowled, again. ‘Besides I don’t remember you hitting the Bludger, but perhaps the blow knocked my memory.’ 

‘It was Ikkaku, but I asked him to do it,’ Rukia guiltily admitted.

Toshiro hummed when they separated, but his forehead stayed on hers, catching his breath. They were in the dark end of the hallway, sitting on the carpet floor, their legs tangled together. 

“I’ve missed this,” he murmured, words slightly slurred from what was surely the world’s strongest punch more than it was the beer they had now. 

“Me too,” Rangiku admitted softly before reconnecting their lips. 

 Fuck, it was good to be back.
