rereading the slippery slope and thinking about the schism again. the sinister duo planning to recruit the snow scouts using the eagles, and also planning to burn all their parents' houses down. firestarters way of recruitment. vs the discussion of entering people's house and 'getting permission first' in the meeting transcript in tua.

from j's angle - we, our side, we get permission first, unlike the other side who simply burn the parents house and kill them and kidnap the children for their recruits.

the snicket themselves were an example - E wished she'd been home to be able to say goodbye. in some way the recruitment was expected. as some kind of eventuality. permission was given, although perhaps reluctant, or maybe it was a mere formality and no one really had a choice in the matter after the decision was informed to the parents, but the formality was there and it was unlike the other side's method, who simply burn down houses and then take the children.

the denouements, before they were taken, their house burnt down. if this was the doing of 'the other side', perhaps they were planning to take them, but instead the volunteers intervened (we won't burn down houses to recruit children, but if they were already orphaned by your side then that's a different matter. in fact it might even be more crucial to save these children from the villainous firestarters' clutches. like, consider the case of snow scouts who were kidnapped by the sinister duo - if someone appears to save these children who were now all orphaned, and recruit them into their organization instead - is that really a crime, or providing shelter for orphaned kids and saving them from the clutches of horrible people? and these kids also join in our organization later, is that taking advantage of them or just making the best of the situation? these kids lost their original homes and had no place to go, now.)

on the other hand, in the denouements' case things might not be so straightforward, the sides might not yet been so clear. the schism, according to dewey denouement, happened when he was four. and then on the night before his fifth birthday, their house was burnt down, and they were taken. so it was the very early days of the schism, at that point. maybe those people who burnt down the house still in some way considered themselves vfd. or count as vfd members. perhaps some vfd members were already doing the 'burning down house and orphaning children' recruitment scheme, before the schism turned them into the other side. but is recruitment method a contention point, the argument that divided the original vfd, at which point they become two groups, one that 'get permission first', and the other took much drastic methods? or is the schism about something else, and there are people on both sides who are willing to go to different lengths when it comes to recruitment? if the other side is already doing this, does it justify us doing it because desperate times, desperate measures? if a child is already orphaned by your enemies, is taking the child under your wing a moral thing to do or just taking advantage of the situation? do these questions get argued about in vfd meetings?
