The beautiful, grand Trost organ in Waltershausen. Bach was quite fond of Trost’s organ work, and played on one of his instruments in Altenburg. Thanks to Gérard Mersier for these pics from my concert in Roquevaire, France, two weeks ago. I had the privilege to play a concert on Pierre Cochereau’s organ. I played Franck’s Chorale no 3, Bach’s Toccata Adagio and Fugue, Muffat’s Toccata X, Schumann’s Fugue in BACH no 2, Desseins éternels and Durufle’s Toccata for the first half. Raphael’s the Holy Family with John the Baptist stunned me. I couldn’t stop looking at it. The absolute innocence and admiration in the face of St John the Baptist, the humanity of the interaction between him and Christ, the translucence of Mary’s veil, the mathematical proportions of the subjects, in my opinion make this an absolute masterpiece. Other artwork from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna include Rubens’ Theodosius and St Ambrose - which displays the story of the bravery of Bishop Ambrose when he refuses the emperor entry into the church or access to communion after he committed a massacre in Thessalonica. Then Rubens’ amazing Annunciation and Giordano’s incredibly detailed St Michael the Archangel. Vermeer’s the Art of Painting and one of the most intricately carved pendants I’ve ever seen.
