This recently restored 1954 Atomic mid-century modern in the Whiting Woods area of Glendale, doesn't miss a detail. Architect David Levitt, AIA is known for his clean work and high level of taste. Landing on market yesterday, thought I'd post a few pics because it's gorgeous. The 3 bedroom and 3 bath pool home is something not to be missed. Whether it's Moons Over My Hammy or a stack of Slap Jacks, diners can often provide some late night provisions. But, here in Southern California, the diner wasn't just a destination, but an experience! The mid-century style known as Googie architecture is prevalent in many of our burger joints and greasy spoons dappled about. This mid-century style was ever so popular for it's whimsical vernacular. Seen here are photos of the recently restored Armet & Davis design for Denny's in 1969. So many awesome architectural attributes accompany this one. Take a close look. Mixture of building materials include common materials, but how the architects chose to work them into the design is a whole different story. Stucco/Cement is used to create faux rock on the exterior. The architects use different applications of the stucco to create varying textures and differentiate spacial breaks in the work by doing so. I am always delighted to see work being preserved. This one is a definite classic. Enjoy the pics. Wilkes design from 1962 with it's fenestration featuring nature's simplistic beauty surrounding the flat-roofed International sexiness. You don't feel like you are in Los Angeles. Instead, you are lifted from the earth. This is only one of two homes I know of in the area, designed by the architect also known for UCLA's Univ. Oh, what trouble I can get into, especially when I'm hanging around @na.ka.da_san. At least there wasn't a gun involved this time!!! Instead, we just got attacked by Large Marge! 😂 Here is a pictorial of William Pereira's design for the Metropolitan Water Disctrict Building, which has NOT been saved from the wrecking ball. Could you imagine the building being converted into living spaces? The tower worked out well with its re-use efforts, now stylish apartments. Shame the city doesn't see it the same way. Wah! Early in the 50's, Elwain Steinkamp continued his Bel Air homes development over the Mulholland ridge and into the hills of Sherman Oaks. He coined the neighborhood high above the San Fernando Valley, Sherwood Park. Edward H. Fickett, F.A.I.A. worked closely with Steinkamp and Stanley Martsen developing the upper tracts of Sherman Oaks. And right out of a 60's Better Homes & Gardens (wink-wink), comes this 1961 Armet & Davis design. The 4/4 Stone Canyon residence was designed for builders Zoss Construction Company and enjoys incredible views of the LA Basin and Stone Canyon Reservoir. The architects designed a handful of homes in the area. Louis L. Armet, A.I.A. and Eldon C. Davis, A.I.A. were dubbed “the Frank Lloyd Wrights of diner designers” by SF columnist Herb Caen. Inside the renovated 1948 midcentury masterpiece known as John Lautner's design "The Jules Salkin Residence" for the important, Jules G. Salkin. Note: #JulesGSalkin was among three men who created the Crestwood Hills, Mutual Housing Corporation, in Brentwood. The MHC received Federal grants to fund cooperative projects, where people would pool money and resources together to build houses.
