5″x7″ Acrylic and Paper Collage
During my process of writing / illustrating the book, I had envisioned Everly encountering some forest animal friends. That concept didn’t make the final cut into the book, but it was still an idea I had wanted to explore, so the painting above is that exploration.
A page from Always Everly for a windy fall day. Below is a closer look at the original painting to better see the mixed media detail of the real piece.
If you are looking for a fun Halloween book this year, then check out PUMPKIN MAGIC. Written by the very talented Ed Masessa, and Illustrated by me. This book was a ton of fun to illustrate, is filled with some silly spookiness and can be found here:

Medium : Acrylic Paint and Paper Collage on Illustration Board.
Here is a close up look at the cover art for my new book ALWAYS EVERLY. Every page was painted with a mix of acrylic paint and paper collage. I ended up with quite a lot of these cups of painted paper which helped me organize the colorful mess that is paper collage.
I’m excited to share the cover of my Author / Illustrator debut ALWAYS EVERLY, due out in stores and online September 21st later this year. The entire book was painted with Acrylic and Paper Collage. Below is a little more about the book:
One Spring, a pine tree named Everly sprouts in the woods where everyone is green. Fitting in feels great for Everly. But, uh oh, one day all of the other trees begin to change—their greens turn to bright yellows and reds. Everly wants to change just like her friends, but . . .what’s an evergreen to do?
Check back here for more sneak peeks and behind the scenes looks at the book leading up to it’s release.
This was an early time of day study I did to explore the colors of our desert location in The Croods : A New Age. We see this desert location in 4 different moments in the film: Hot Afternoon, Romantic Sunset, Stary Night, and a Foggy Morning. An exercise like this is always fun to see the different kinds of bold moods we can get out of one location.
Last fall I wrapped up Production Designing The Croods : A New Age, which was a blast to work on and posed tons of creative challenges. So stay tuned to see more paintings and designs that helped shape the look of the film.
Above is the first painting I did for the film, dating all the way back to Spring 2018. The layout came from our amazing Head of Story Januel Mercado who was story boarding the sequence at the time. It ended up being our first shot to go though all of our departments, including animation, FX, final lighting, ect.
If you are looking for a fun Halloween book this year, check out Pumpkin Magic. Written by the talented Ed Masessa and illustrated by yours truly. I had a great time working on this book and will be posting more art from inside throughout the month. If you’d like to purchase, click the link above or HERE.
