My Great-Grandma, Pearl May Daniels. This photo was taken in the early 1950s in McDowell County, WV. She was a mean, rough, gun-toting lady who didn't take no attitude from anybody. I met her only a couple times when I was little. Her funeral was the first I ever attended. I remember her wearing a purple dress with little pink flowers all over it. Most people look peaceful in their coffins but ... she still looked like she had a chip on her shoulder. . . . #familyhistorian #findyourfamily #genealogyfreak #genealogy #genealogist #genealogyblogger #genealogistsofinstagram #blogger #familyhistory #familyhistoryblogger #greatgrandma #hopsonfamily #danielsfamily #mcdowellwv #wvgenealogy #wvgenealogist #directdescendant #ancestry #ancestors #digyourroots #telltheirstory #vintagephotos (at McDowell, West Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1mOX3knOKJ/?igshid=etxchddlwx57

Sometimes relationships aren't about who is on a certificate but about the bond you have. These ladies are my maternal grandmas. They are sisters. The one on the right is my biological Nanny and I love her. The one on the left is my Mamaw, though my great-aunt on paper. It was she and her husband who raised me as a set of grandparents, who corrected me and taught me values, who took me on the only family vacations I ever had and she who helped me with my own child. She and I have holiday traditions and more memories and love between us than ink on a birth certificate could ever create. Family and genetics aren't the same. It's important for you descendants who know where their genetics came from but it's just as important for them to know who their family was, who had a hand in on making them who they are. 💕🌳💕 . #genetics #family #familyhistory #familytree #history #blood #familyhistorian #genealogist #genealogyblogger #familyhistoryblogger #blogger #grandma #myfamily #thankyou #specialbond #research #wvgenealogy #wvgenealogist #findyourfamily #digyourroots #evansfamily #myfamily #biological #ancestry #ancestry (at Man, West Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1e5iILnVdu/?igshid=1kjnn52ifgf2z

MOST OF MY FAMILY DOES CRQZY THINGS BUT THIS ONE TAKES THE CAKE! 🛫 William C. "Wild Bill" Hopson: A WWII pilot...He flew airmail routes for 8 years, often earning the "Wild Bill" nickname. He was well known by most in airmail pilot circles, and by many outsiders as well. 🛩 One of his better known escapades involved the need to get to a particular city for a date with a young lady. Unable to secure another means of getting there, Wild Bill clung to the outside of another pilot's airplane - laying on the wing and hanging on to the wing's guy wires for the duration of the two hour flight.... 🛬 Wild Bill died in 1928, when the Airmail Plane he was piloting exploded in mid air. His cremated remains were recovered inside the charred plane. . . .#wildbillhopson #genealogyfreak #genealogy #genealogicalresearch #familyhistorian #genealogist #familytree #ancestors #ancestry #hopsonfamily #ww2pilot #planecrash #dna ##genealogistsofinstagram #genealogyblogger #genes #familyhistory (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1YQTbrn1jJ/?igshid=cu8q3v9j1lwv

This is my father, Harmon Lee Hopson Jr. Born in a log cabin to an abusive father and a mother who made due, his life was coated in foreshadowing in from the start. He was drafted into the Vietnam War in August of 1967 when he was 19-years-old, leaving his new bride behind in the States. He attended Radio Relay and Carrier Operator School at the USA Southeastern School. He was a Radio Controlman and served as a Mechanic and Power Plant Operator while on tour. First he was a Private but but grew in rank until becoming a Specialist-4. On two instances, his shelters were bombed while he slept-both times he made it out unharmed, for which he gave thanks to being thin enough to fit under his bed, allowing the roof to fall onto it instead. While in Vietnam, Harmon served in 6 of the locations known to be most heavily sprayed with Agent Orange. He kept a journal the whole time he was in the war zone and in it is recorded learning that his wife, Brenda was pregnant with their first child. He was elated. My sister, Angela would be born the following November. For his valiant, dedicated and courageous service during the tumultuous Vietnam War, was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device and three Bronze Service Stars and released with Honorable Discharge on August 14, 1973. Over the course of three relationships, five kids, and 44 years the Agent Orange slowly developed into cancer. No Veterans benefits, no medical card. Forced to retire from coal mining, he still pay out of pocket for treatments. He was as calm and brave during the battle with cancer as he was in War. He often spoke of how the Vietnam veterans were treated like dogs when they returned home, with no parade and nobody happy to see them, rather upset they had gone in the first place. It bothered him a lot. For his sacrifice, however, he was posthumously rewarded with a bridge named after him in his honor. He would've loved that. This man is my life, even with him gone. He is who bought me my first diary and taught me how to keep it and he is who got me started doing genealogy when I was only 7 and also taught me how (at Mount Gay, West Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1U-2EbnU88/?igshid=yuhb1irbobxn

🗽⛴#titanic 1st Class cabin A-29 belonged to #edithcorseevans, a 35-year-old single socialite from NYC. She is most known for her selfless act of giving up her seat in Collapsible Boat D to Caroline Brown, saying, "You must be the one to go! You have a family waiting for you at home. I have no one. I will take another boat later." (This act was the inspration for the scene in the 1997 film about the ship where Rose gives up the seat to #ununsinkablemollybrown. Note that in real life, it was indeed #carolinebrown who inherited the seat, not Molly Brown, though both ladies were indeed passengers of the Titanic.) It was believed for many years that no later boat came for Edith to board and that she had went down with the ship. A memoir I recently found written by a #survivor, however, stated that Edith DID in fact make it onto Collapsible Boat A, the last one to take to water. The writer states that he and Edith had to remain standing on the boat in order to maintain its balance and not capsize it, spilling everyone into the water. He reports that Edith was cold and fatigued and pleaded that she just couldn't stand any longer. When he reminded her that if she didn't remain standing, everyone aboard the boat would die Edith looked at him blankly for a moment then out at the cold dark water. Suddenly, she threw herself overboard into the night and into the frozen waters to her promised death. Twice that night she selflessly sacrificed her safety to save her fellow passengers. Her body was never recovered but a memorial service was held in her honor at Grace Episcopal Church in #nyc. Her sister Lena dedicated two memorial plaques in her honor: one to #gracechurch and the other to #saintann's, both in NY. At her memorial service, Caroline Brown spoke of Edith's heroism and how she maintained calm the entire time and tended to the situation as business that must be done, never once thinking to put herself before others. Edith's room, A-29 was up the right side of the famous Grand Staircase, around the corner to the left, and three doors back on the right. The room was situated just below and behind the 3rd funnel, where the ship would split in half. (at Titanic Museum Attraction) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1Hk1w7Hmcm/?igshid=1437bxnws5a5v
