The Chicago garage rockers broke up in obscurity more than 30 years ago, but a German label is giving them a second chance at the audience they deserve.

Leor Galil of the Chicago Reader wrote an article highlighting the work a handful of us have done lifting up the legacy of Tina Bell. In it, he also unearths more information about Tina’s life and Bam Bam’s story. It’s a long, important, and celebratory ready!

SONG: The Bloods - “Button Up”
The Bloods only had one single but multi-talent Adele Bertei scored and stared in the feminist sci-fi fantasy flick “Born in Flames” by Lizzie Borden. The part-time member of the Contortions DJed in the Netherlands and played solo from time to time. Growing into her art in the Cleveland underground, she’s since authored two books-- “Peter and the Wolves” and “Why Labelle Matters,” (she’s also a ghost-writer and blogger)-- and directed period pieces for the Showtime series “Women: Stories of Passion.”
Bertei (in the middle above) was there for the beginnings of no wave in NYC. She’s performed on stage with Tears for Fears, Debbie Harry, Culture Club and the Passions. She’s written songs for the Pointer Sisters and Sheena Easton. That’s not all, but it’s a good intro.
Because-- holy shit.

SONG: “Something in the Basement” by The Girls
The Girls from Chicago are rad. This song is rad. This video is rad.

SONG: “People” by F-Systems
F-Systems! Fuck yeah! Art-punk at its finest. Groove-oriented bass line, tight and easy drums, minimal guitar, hooky organ, and an arty singer with good lyrics, a flashy blouse, and an attitude. The group chants, “People! / People!”
And Lorenda describes an inability to feel emotions. “I can’t feel anything / I don’t touch anything / I can’t do anything / I’m walking wounded romance!”
Is there anything cooler than that?

SONG: “My Pink Mustang” by Ramona Jan’s band JANTURAN
Founder of ‘70s & ‘80s punk bands The Comateens and Dizzy & the Romilars, Ramona Jan is currently in a band called JANTURAN! In her ‘60s and still kicking ass!
Check out the video for their song “My Pink Mustang!” I love the off-kilter harmonies and hypnotic chorus with the trippy visuals!

Patti Smith Set the Stage for Bikini Kill
I don’t normally write about incredibly media-famous artists (or counterculture superstars) like Patti Smith or Kathleen Hanna. It’s not because I don’t revere them– I absolutely do. I just don’t think I have anything new to say about their work or legacies. (I would, maybe, however, if given the chance to interview them!)
Here’s a response-piece I wrote on 50Thirdand3rd after seeing both artists live at Riot Fest last week.
