Hello, tumblr. Imma write a story :)

This is my first time writing a story, I hope you like it. It is multi part, this is part 1. The story is called "You're Not Alone In The Shadows" and it's an original by me. All characters and artwork is also by me. Enjoy :)

You're Not Alone In The Shadows - Part 1:

Axel isn't scary. He just wasn't born that way. He doesn't really want to be, either. But he's a monster. What else is he going to be?

He's not supposed to be a "he", he's supposed to an "it". "It" is supposed to cause chaos and fear, pain and suffering, sometimes even death. That's how it works in the Shadows. It's quite unfair, Axel thinks.

Which is one of the reasons Axel is still awake in the middle of the day, crying in his resting chambers, once again.

"What am I supposed to do, Mei? Mum's gonna take me in to Void in a few days, and I have nothing," Axel says. Void is the innermost region of the Shadows, the farthest into the darkness monsters can go. Void is where the Cryptids live, and where Axel will have to attempt to get one as his sponsor.

And Mei is his pet harvestman. She came to the Shadows from the Light because the humans are afraid of her. She isn't even a monster, and she can scare people just by existing.

Mei crawls onto his shoulder. She's one of his only comforts.

Axel goes completely silent for a moment, listening hard to hear if his mum is sleeping, before pulling his phone out from under his bed. If it ever knew he had one, it would never let him out of its sight again. He bought it off a Penumbrian Creature on the street. It's illegal to have, but it has musics on it. Musics are strange. It's just noise, but it feels nice. Humans make beautiful things.

He puts on a music, his favourite one, and tries to relax. It proves very difficult. In just a few days, he will have to convince a Cryptid that he can be scary so that they will sponsor him to go to the human world. It's not what he wants, but if he can't get sponsored, he will end up a Creature, like that Penumbrian he bought the phone from. He doesn't want to end up like that, but that seems to be where his life is going.

Monsters have ranks in the Shadows. A Cryptid is a monster who is scary and well known enough in the Light that humans have given it a name, such as the Boogeyman or Nessie. Then there are Demons, monsters who are scary but not well known enough for a human-given name. Hellions are more troublesome than scary, but they still go into the Light, and they can at least cause the fear that is expected of monsters through causing pain.

Creatures are not scary, and they can't cause fear, and they rarely go to the Light. Monsters of all other ranks hate Creatures. Most Creatures can't make enough to live, and die of starvation. Some are killed by other monsters for fun. It's very rare they are able to get by even on the streets, nevermind able to get a place to live.

Monsters need the fear of others. It's currency. Axel's mum is just a Hellion, it barely makes enough fear to keep itself and a young monster alive and well. It won't be able to fund Axel anymore once he's not young.

The problem is, you can't move up in rank unless you go to the Light, and you can't go into the Light unless you are higher in rank. That's why, once you aren't young anymore, you need to get a sponsor.

It's stressful, and it's difficult to relax, but the music makes it a little easier. Axel just has to remember to put the phone away before he falls asleep.

A couple of hours later, he turns the phone off and hides it back under the bed, lays down, and goes to sleep.
