I made this yukata!
The fabric was a 14 yard long, 12" wide tanmono bolt that I bought from Japan and sewed using both western and Japanese methods of construction!

Back in February
I’m so happy to share that I got a judges award for another one of my costumes! It came as a surprise as at Katsucon people go all out for their costumes! Clemensia was a project built on determination and love for the Hunger Games franchise. I’m happy that she got to shine in more ways than one!
Thank you for @panem_propaganda & @balladofsongbirds for providing pre release source materials!

Jane Seymour cosplay from Six the Musical. The skirt pattern was drafted myself and I used silver sequin fabric, tulle, and wide fishnet.
It took about 2 yards to make. I had to hand baste the 3 layers together before serging and sewing the layers together.

Esther Blanchett is one of my dream cosplay characters!
Tumblr media
Astarohime - Russia, Trinity Blood Yes, I got to see a Russian cosplayer’s big dress in person, and they are just as over the top as in their photos!!! The amount of pearls hand sewn on… The ruched fabrics, the trimmings, the collars and sleeves.. Aaaaaah. The performance was elegant and engaging, with a melancholy ending that used the winged backdrop to turn Esther into a fallen angel. @Polymanga #Switzerland #GlobalEasterCosplay

Beads? Yes beads. You need to make sure you're adequately stocked on not just seed beads, but bugle beads as well as crystal beads. Crystals? Rhinestones! Get 2 no 3 gross of that rhinestone in both the regular and iridescent version.
step away from the rhinestones
No I need them
I don't know who needs to hear this, but
YOU DO NOT NEED TO START A NEW HOBBY!
STEP AWAY FROM THE TEXTILES!
YOU DON'T NEED MORE YARN!
THAT FABRIC IS NOT CALLING TO YOU! LEAVE IT ALONE!

So here is my basic, opaque, organza fairy wings tutorial. This was done for Stella from Winx Club, but it was a lot easier for me to do than other wing tutorials I found that included organza and hand-sewing. If you would like a more legible version of this, I can e-mail a pdf, just please inbox your e-mail. Thank-you and let me know if you have any questions :) I should be completing this costume relatively soon.

*Updated to reflect observations post New York Comic Con*
Finally a fabric write up for all cosplayers and costume enthusiasts! A special thank you to Balladofspngbirds for the behind the scenes photos of Tom and Ashley in Germany and Panem Propaganda for the up close photos of Coryo’s uniform from the Vegas exhibit!
The Academy uniforms are a bright red gabardine twill fabric. The fabric content can be wool, polyester, or a blend of the aforementioned fabrics. The actual screen used costumes are made from pure wool. My Clemensia is specifically 100% poly gabardine fabric that I got on Goldhawk Road in London.
You may be asking yourself: what the heck is that fabric on the front of the blazer that has the buttons? Good question readers! I had the same thought when I found a good texture match, it looks like a polyester pique fabric! The color should be as close to the main gabardine for the blazer , pants, and skirt. The buttons for the blazer have the Capitol Emblem on them and have been custom made specifically for the production of TBOSBAS. Unless a metal caster is willing to make and sell replicas then a standard brass metal button with some kind of bird emblem will do.
The shirt is a standard button up blouse or dress shirt made of a cotton poly shirting fabric in a pale blue/gray color.
Note: one of the Academy promoters was kind enough to show me that the skirt is in fact a separate garment from the pants and can be attached to the pants waistband with a hook. The singular welt pockets on the blazer are also only for decoration.

Fingers crossed that this is the only time that I’ll have to talk about this. In the 10 years that I’ve been cosplaying I’ve had luck with not seeing bad sportsmanship from other people at cosplay contests. I didn’t get my first Best in Division craftsmanship award until 2022. (Not sure if honorable mentions count in this case) I get that it hurts whenever you lose. It sucks when you don’t get the award that you wanted. It sucks that you poured blood, sweat, tears, and maybe some cuss words in and the judges didn’t call you to stand with them at the award ceremony. I’ve been there. But the judges have the skill set and the experience to make their decisions. That’s why they were selected to be part of that panel. In the moment it feels justified to rant and say negative stuff. But people remember stuff like that. If it’s posted online? The internet is forever. Hey Audience members! You were not there during the cosplay construction process or the judging session!
Let’s do better everyone. To all cosplayers that are still working towards their first win, keep going and be open minded to constructive feedback. If you don’t win, ask the judges politely after the con for their opinion and feedback. Then take it and go full on ahead with your next project! We are all geeks just dressing up as our favorite characters.
