Growing up I always enjoyed eating cauliflower and broccoli with cheese sauce. My brother and I pretended to be giraffes eating the broccoli "trees" and we loved the cauliflower just as much. Our mother always cooked the whole vegetable, including the stem and leaves. When I was older I noticed that a lot of people throw everything out but the actual florets. It literally hurt when I saw the beautiful stems and leaves disappear in the bin. So much waste! From the stems you could make soup or you could julienne the stems and use them in a salad or stir-fry. The nutritional value of the stems is just as high as in the florets. In fact, cauliflower leaves have an even higher calcium content than the other parts I love the c.leaves steamed or boiled with whstever I'm having that dau, but you could also separate them and drizzle them with oil and salt and bake them in the oven- voila! Delicious crispy chips. The possibilities, quite frankly are endless. There is a Bengali recipe that is very popular and it only uses the leaves of cauliflower. It's called FULKOPI PATA BATA- cauliflower leave paste. I have not made this yet, but there are some leaves waiting for me in the fridge. I simply have to try this. No need to waste any nutritious, valuable vegetables. Btw, there are other vegetables that have very tasty and nutritious leaves. There are Beet leaves Celery leaves Broccoli leaves Carrot greens Fennel fonds etc..... As you can see, there are endless new recipes and flavours to try. What about you? In an Ethiopian town, called Harar the towns people feed and sometimes hand feed hyenas meet scraps and bones left over from slaughter. Yes, me being vegan I prefer if people not kill aninals for consumption, but I also know that this is not practical in some areas of the world. All over Africa people are terrified of hyenas and rightfully so. Hyenas regularly kill livestock and even people. As one puts it: "they will literally chew you up and turn you into a bloody patch on the ground in a matter of minutes." But people in this town have been living peacefully with hyneas for over 200 years with no attacks on people and livestock. People are not scared of them, but believe they eat the bad spirits that roam the city. The ultimate survival food: THE POTATO Is there one food you could live on forever? Short answer: No, there isn't. Long answer: Although there isn't one single food that could keep you alive for several years or decades, if you only had potatoes available to eat you could live quite well for a prolonged amount time. The humble potato is so full nutrients that you can definitely survive of just eating them for a little while (how long exactly I cannot tell you, but there is a guy who tried eating only potatoes for 2 months straight). By researching this topic I came across a website that claimed if you eat white poatoes and sweet potatoes together you had a pretty good chance of actually getting all your essential nutrients. Poatoes are a fascinating plant and have been eaten for thousands of years in South America where the Incas first started cultivating them from wild poatoes. The originally poisonous plants were domesticated and turned into tasty nutritious power houses. Potatoes still have the potential to kill you if chose to eat them green btw. In Peru they have an interesting way of turning toxic wild poatoes into edible CHUÑOS by freeze drying them over several days in the mountains. That way they can be stored and eaten over several decades. If you are patient enough you can find out how to make your own chuños and you would never run out of food ever again.
