He’s been cold since getting back to Coruscant. He knew he would be after 30 days in the Dune Sea, though it’s hard to feel chilly with Padme’s hand in his as they walk out of the gala and into the gardens.

He can feel her anxiety radiating off of her. While he’s been finding himself in the desert, she’s been working in the trenches of the senate, helping to untangle the tangle of malice and confusion Palpetine had left the Republic in.

It’s easy to tell that she’s exhausted as she sits down on a bench and gazes up at him.

“You look tired, Padme,” Anakin says gently as he sits next to her, taking her hand. “We can talk later.”

“No,” she insists. “No, I…I want to know what you meant. You said that you may still marry me even though you took your Jedi vows, what does that mean?”

Anakin gazes at her softly. “I…I found a Jedi Temple in the Dune Sea,” he tells her softly. “And I realized that… that I haven’t been taking care of myself. I haven’t been helping myself. And…and part of that was the war, but…but part of that was feeling as though I still wasn’t free.”

Padme swallows and gazes at him, her hand tightening around his fingers.

“The code forbids attachment,” he says, rubbing his thumb over the back of her hand. “But…but my time on Tatooine made me realize that that aspect of the Jedi code has kept me from feeling whole.”

“What do you mean?” Padme asks, her voice going soft as she watches him.

Anakin takes a breath. “I told the Council that I wouldn’t be following the no attachment rule in the Code,” he explains. “I can’t do it anymore. I can’t keep hiding. It’s hurt me much more than it’s helped.”

Padme nods slowly, her voice going soft as she says “Oh,” in response, her hand still holding his tightly.

“And it means that I’ll never be on the Council,” Anakin shrugs, grinning sadly. “And the Council is deliberating on whether they’ll let me stay in the Order at all, but…but this feels right.”

“What? That’s ludicrous,” she snaps. “You’re one of the Jedi’s best warriors, and a very well-respected General. They can’t expel you for wanting to take care of yourself.”

“It’s against the code,” Anakin points out.

“Damn the code,” Padme says angrily. “And damn the Council for their insane standards.”

He smiles, bewildered. “Padme…”

She huffs and gets to her feet, letting go of his hand and pacing a little. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’ve been working non-stop since you ran Palpetine off. All I’ve run into is opposition on all sides, from the rest of the senate to what’s left of the separatists, to the Jedi…”

“Is there anything I can do to help?” Anakin asks, watching her worriedly.

“You can be blunt,” she tells him. “You’re renouncing the no attachment part of the code. Does that mean you want to be with me? Really be with me?”

He swallows, his eyes going soft as he nods. “It’s all I’ve wanted. I’m tired of pretending I don’t. I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to-”

She doesn’t let him finish, tugging him to his feet and kissing him softly and slowly. He stumbles forward a little as he kisses her back, sliding his arms around her gently.

And for the first time, he feels like he might really be free.

Leia Skywalker likes the view from her father's shoulders.

She's four, and small, and he is a giant; a towering man, and she can feel his pulse through her chin resting on the top of his head. Can feel the thump of his heavy boots and the rumble of his deep chuckles through his shoulders.

Sometimes he lets her spend hours up there as he goes about his day, just watching, her big brown eyes studying his mech hand working in tandem with his real one to make food, or fix something on Artoo.

Listens to conversations as he walks through the senate building or the Jedi temple.

"Aren't your shoulders getting tired?" Obi-Wan asks.

"No," her father says simply.

"You can't bring her into the council meeting, you know."

Her father smirks. She knows he does because she can feel his amusement through the Force, and his ears shift with the movement of his mouth.

"Watch me."

Sometimes she falls asleep up there and when she wakes, she's curled up in his arms with her face pressed in against his chest, surrounded by his long brown robes.

When she looks up, he's smiling at her, the scar bisecting his eye crinkling with it, and she goes back to sleep.

a little thing about Captain Rex and a stuffed animal

One time, the 501st breaks a siege on a planet somewhere and Rex and the guys are down on the surface doing a little mop-up/taking a breather and the locals are being super friendly and grateful to the troops. A little girl with a little stuffed loth cat comes up to Rex and asks him if it was scary to fight the droids.

“‘course it’s scary. But it’s what we were made to do.” Rex says. “We do it all the time.”

“Oh.” the girl says. “That’s very brave of you.”

“uhhh…. thanks, kid.”

“You shouldn’t have to be scared all the time.”

“It’s not really-” but the girl cuts him off by shoving her loth cat doll in his face.

“HERE!”

“what”

“Here you go! This is Bunny Princess. When I’m scared, i give her a big hug. And then it’s not so bad.”

“er, okay.” Rex takes the plush kitty and gives it a hug. Then offers it back to the girl.

“No, you have to keep her!” she insists. “So next time you have to fight the droids, you won’t be scared!” She looks so earnest and serious that Rex can’t say no.

“Thank you,” he tells her. “I’m sure that… Bunny Princess… will give us a tactical advantage in future battles.” (Rex maybe isn’t? the best? with kids? but they seem to love him anyway)

Rex tucks Bunny Princess into his armor and forgets about her until he gets back to the ship. He’s undressing in his quarters when he pulls the loth-cat out. He smiles to himself. It’s a bit silly, honestly, but the kid was cute. He throws Bunny Princess on his bed.

And if Rex sometimes falls asleep clutching Bunny Princess in one hand, no one needs to know that. And if he wakes up from a nightmare and hugs her until he can breath again, no one needs to know that. And the next time Rex finds a trooper crying in the barracks after losing his squad, he goes to his quarters, grabs Bunny Princess, and hands it to the trooper without a word. And it becomes a thing that everyone knows- if you’re grieving, or having a panic attack, or whatever, Captain Rex is going to pull this beat-up, snot-covered, dirty loth-cat plushy out of nowhere and hand it to you. And you’re going to hug it. And you’re going to feel better.

With the revelation of his son's survival comes the sudden death of Darth Vader.

One night, he dreams of teaching a sandy haired boy how to swim in the lake on Naboo and when he wakes up, all that darkness and hate and rage is nowhere to be found.

And so, Anakin Skywalker makes new choices.

He goes to Kamino, where he knows Palpetine has his DNA on file, and orders the techs to clone his damaged organs and limbs (all but the right hand. He's too used to the mech), and he spends almost a year there, letting them mend his long-broken body. It's painful, but Anakin Skywalker is nothing if not used to pain.

And he speaks to no one. No one knows where he is. Palpetine either doesn't know and is furious, or knows and doesn't care. Most think he's died, and the Rebellion celebrates, but they've still got a sith lord ruling the galaxy so not too hard.

And when the techs finish, Anakin Skywalker looks in the mirror at his less-pale but still deeply scarred face, at his long limbs and for the first time in two decades takes a long, deeply breath.

And disappears.

He steals an unmarked ship.

He finds a swampy planet that seems to be relatively uninhabited.

And he breathes.

Until one day, while in meditation, settled on the marshy grown, something pokes his knee.

And when Anakin Skywalker cracks an eye open to see what is disturbing his meditation, he freezes.

Because the wizened, green old Jedi standing there with his cane nudging the former sith looks both incredibly pleased to see him but also not pleased at all.

"A debt do you owe this galaxy, Skywalker," Yoda tells him. "Hide, you must not from your responsibilities."

"I've done enough damage for a few lifetimes, Master Yoda," Anakin responds.

Yoda huffs and sits next to him, looking at the swamp. "Blind were the Jedi, to your troubles."

"No. I made choices."

"And one more you must make," Yoda says. "Come calling, destiny always does."

Above them, the sound of a starfighter breaking atmo cracks through the calm of the Degobah swamp, and the presence of its pilot sings through the Force, right in Anakin Skywalker's ears.

He sighs deeply. "Kriff."

It earns him a smack upside the head from Yoda's cane.

"Language, young Skywalker," the old Jedi chuckles. "Or a bad influence on your son you will be."

Also Leia would probably kill him. But not before breaking him out of jail.

So when the twins wake up on Tatooine decades in the past, they play it safe. They take over a planet, reconnect with their adoptive and real parents without weirding them out (too much), and accidentally cause the Chancellor perpetual near-death experiences.

After killing three of the Jedi Order's best and brightest, Palpatine's fight with Jedi Master Mace Windu goes shorter than expected. Afraid he's lost his chance at recruiting a new apprentice, Sidious unleashes Order 66 across the galaxy, but, per their programming, the Clone Army is not to harm Anakin Skywalker. After witnessing the most painful loss he's ever experienced and injured at the hands of his captors, Anakin is ready to die like the rest of the Jedi, though not before getting his vengeance.
