Zelenskyy to visit Washington after U.N. appearance
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet with President Joe Biden and key members of Congress in Washington next week, a person familiar with the plans confirmed to POLITICO on Thursday evening. Zelenskyy’s stop-off in Washington will follow his attendance at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he hopes to shore up support for his country in the war against Russia. Zelenskyy will meet with Biden at the White House next Thursday and will also visit Capitol Hill, The Associated Press reported.
About a third of the House GOP caucus does support Ukraine. So President Zelenskyy's visit will likely highlight divisions among Republicans.

Sen. Ted Cruz and other extremist MAGA Republicans complain that the US military suffers because it tries to be inclusive of all Americans. People on the far right have difficulty holding back their adoration of Russia with its official persecution of LGBTQ+ Russians.
As it turns out, Ukraine has openly LGBTQ troops and its military is giving Putin’s homophobic Russia a sound spanking – and not the fun kind.
One thing that Putin and his Republican buddies don’t understand is that a more inclusive army is a stronger army.
As 2022 Eurovision winner, Ukraine is guaranteed a place in the Eurovision final on 13 May. When TVORCHI takes the stage in host city Liverpool, it will be a moment to savour for the country's LGBT troops.
"I didn't know if I would make it," says Antonina Romanova, a soldier who has been fighting on Ukraine's front line.
"I had to walk two kilometres under strong fire in the mud, in the rain, at night - with the mortar and all the equipment, which was extremely heavy. It was beyond my physical capability. I doubt I could go through that again."
This is the reality for Antonina, who identifies as non-binary and who, with her partner of nine years Oleksandr, took the decision to leave their lives as theatre directors in Kyiv and fight the Russian army. "Another world" is how Oleksandr describes it.

But the razzamatazz, the strutting, the shimmying and the songs all seem a very long way from frontline warfare. Why is Eurovision something they care about?
"It is a very important message that Europe supports us," explains Antonina. "And for people defending Ukraine with weapons in their hands, it's very important."
Both soldiers have fond memories of Kalush Orchestra's triumph, winning Eurovision for Ukraine in 2022.

Turning his shoulder towards the camera, Oleksandr shows off a rainbow badge - which certainly pops against the green-greys of his military uniform. And they are both wearing another badge, which is more discreet, in army colours. A unicorn's head stares out. It's become an emblem of serving LGBT military in Ukraine. "Because lots of people said that there were no gay people in the army," smiles Oleksandr.
The couple expected to encounter homophobic, verbal and even physical aggression from fellow soldiers, having been beaten and pepper-sprayed in a random homophobic street attack before the war last year.
But overall, they've been pleasantly surprised. "It's more tolerant than we expected - and I think that is partly because of other LGBTQ military who came out," says Oleksandr, in a nod to soldier Viktor Pylypenko, who was considered a pioneer when he came out in 2018.
[ ... ]
For Antonina, the impact of Russian aggression is nothing new. She fled her birthplace, Crimea, when Russia invaded the peninsula in 2014 and moved to Kyiv. It's ironic that she might not otherwise have met Oleksandr and fallen in love.
Partly because of her background, Antonina has vivid memories of Ukraine winning Eurovision in 2016 with Jamala's song, 1944, about the deportation of Crimean Tatars under Stalin.
Although Antonina remains exiled from her homeland, she wants more for it than ending the horrors sent by Vladimir Putin. "I have a great hope that one day Eurovision will be held in Crimea," she says. "Because it's a sacred place for Ukraine. Since the war started in Crimea, it should be finished in Crimea."
Ukraine still has some way to go on the path to equality. But it is moving forward – unlike Russia which gets more homophobic every year.

Russia has a few high profile exotic weapons which it threatens the rest of the world with. But that only distorts the reality of its poorly-trained troops armed with defective or out of date combat gear and experiencing poor morale.
An appropriate symbol of the Russian military is the T-72 tank. For over 30 years it’s been known that the turrets go flying off of these tanks when they are hit by moderate to heavy fire. Yet the Russian military has done little to address this problem. 30 YEARS – damn.

Yale Prof. Timothy Snyder has written several excellent books about Eastern and Central European history and about democracy. Prof. Snyder points out:
“[W]hen you run a régime which is based upon the idea that might is right and power is everything and then you lose a war, obviously you’re gonna lose credibility around the world.”

Vladimir Putin himself has exposed the weakness of the Russian military in a spectacular way which would have been impossible for Western intelligence agencies.

The Force is with Ukraine. 🇺🇦 🚀✶
Luke Skywalker is helping President Zelenskyy win the Drone Wars.
“Star Wars” star Mark Hamill has been made an ambassador for the UNITED24 fundraising platform, where he will work in support of the Army of Drones project to benefit Ukraine.
His introduction as an ambassador took place during an online call on Thursday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who expressed his gratitude for Hamill’s support since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“Mark, you have become the first ambassador to help Ukraine raise funds to support its defenders,” Zelenskyy said. “For Ukrainians, this means a lot. As in ‘Star Wars,’ good will triumph over evil and light will overcome darkness. With you in the team, there’s no other way around it.”
“In this long and unequal fight, Ukraine needs continuous additional support. That’s why I was honored President Zelenskyy asked me to become an ambassador for the Army of Drones,” Hamill said in a statement.
It certainly helps Jedi Volodymyr that nowadays the Dark Side of the Force is bumbling and clueless.
