"The history of every society that has existed up to now is the history of class struggles. Freemen and slaves, patricians and plebeians, barons and serfs, guildmen and journeymen, in a word, oppressors and oppressed, always stood in opposition to each other, sustained an uninterrupted struggle, sometimes hidden, sometimes open; a struggle which always ended either with a revolutionary transformation of the whole of society or with the common ruin of the warring classes... Modern bourgeois society, which arose from the ruin of feudal society, has not eliminated class antagonisms. It has only posed new classes, new conditions of oppression, new forms of struggle in place of the old ones. Our era, the era of the bourgeoisie, however stands out because it has simplified class antagonisms. Society as a whole is increasingly splitting into two great hostile camps, into two great classes directly opposed to each other: bourgeoisie and proletariat".
The Communist Manifesto - Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.

Sunday Spotted
For my bestie who remains strangely besotted with Deuxmoi.
E/R, modern AU.
“Congratulations,” Joly said, setting his phone down on the table next to Grantaire, who drained his coffee before leaning back and offering him a sardonic smile.
“Thanks,” he said, pausing before asking, “Though do I want to know why?”
Joly sat down across from him, his grim expression indicating that his congratulations had been sarcastic. “You made the Sunday Spotted,” he said, a little sourly.
Grantaire arched an eyebrow. “The…what?”
“Sunday Spotted,” Joly repeated, and when Grantaire just stared blankly at him, he sighed and added helpfully, “You know, on Deuxmoi?”
Grantaire blinked. “I know my French is a little rusty, but what in the hell is ‘Two Me’?”
“It’s not ‘two me’, it’s Deuxmoi,” Joly said impatiently. “It’s a gossip site on instagram. Like Page Six for zoomers and millennials. And one of their weekly features is called Sunday Spotted, and it’s where random people send in celebrity sightings.”
“Ok,” Grantaire said slowly. “But, uh, you know I’m not a celebrity, right?”
Joly’s scowl deepened. “You’re not,” he said shortly, swiping on his phone to find a screenshot before sliding his phone across the table to Grantaire. “He is.”
Grantaire glanced down at the screenshot, his bemused look slowly fading into something more like a wince when he saw the photo and the accompanying caption:
Tumblr media
“Ah,” he managed, a little weakly.
Joly didn’t look surprised by his reaction. “Unless you want to tell me there’s a different anonymous dark-haired man that Enjolras could be canoodling with at your favorite brunch place…”
He trailed off, and Grantaire shrugged, conspicuously avoiding meeting his eyes. “Last I checked, he was single, so he can canoodle with whomever he wants to.”
“Yeah, but last I checked, the only person he’s ever wanted to canoodle with was you,” Joly said evenly.
Grantaire snorted. “He’s a congressman,” he said dismissively. “He’s probably got interns and lobbyists and closeted senators falling all over themselves to date him. And some of them are probably willing to schlep from DC to the best bottomless mimosa lunch in the West Village.”
“As willing as you are to make the schlep from Queens?” Joly asked archly. “Or are you really going to keep pretending it wasn’t you?”
Grantaire sighed. “If it was me – and I am not copping to that right now – why are you so worked up about it?”
Joly’s scowl returned. “Because this is different than when you and Enjolras were hooking up while he was working as a public defender. Enjolras is considered a rising star in Congress, and there’s bound to be media scrutiny on anyone he’s dating.”
“And you’re worried I would sully his good reputation.”
The sarcasm was practically dripping from every word, and Joly rolled his eyes, before starting, with a bite of impatience, “No, that’s not—”
“Because I don’t know if you realize, but Enjolras doesn’t need any help sullying his reputation, since he’s an independent somewhere to the left of Marx,” Grantaire snapped. “He’s literally the poster child of the liberal elite coming to take the Midwest’s assault weapons and Evangelical Christianity. He makes AOC look positively right-wing. So him having an illicit affair with some no-name bartender isn’t exactly going to do anything to sink his reputation any further.”
“And it’s not his reputation that I’m worried about,” Joly snapped, and when Grantaire blinked at him, he sighed and amended, “Or anyone’s reputation, for that matter.”
“So then what—”
“You really want to see your entire past dragged through the gossip pages?” Joly asked, his voice tight. “The arrests, the drug addiction, the rehab stint…?”
Grantaire swallowed heavily and shrugged, looking away again. “I mean, none of those are exactly a secret,” he mumbled.
Joly shook his head slowly. “But do you really want to read about it in the New York Post with your mugshot splashed next to a picture of Enjolras’s congressional portrait?” he asked quietly. “Is hooking up with Enjolras really worth all of that?”
Grantaire shrugged again. “Maybe it is.”
Joly sighed. “Grantaire—”
Grantaire met his gaze squarely. “Because maybe it’s not just hooking up this time.”
Joly’s expression flickered. “Did Enjolras say that, or is this just wishful thinking?”
Grantaire half-smiled. “Or maybe a little bit of both?”
But Joly didn’t smile, just sighing again before telling Grantaire, as earnestly as he could manage, “Look, you know I love you, and I love Enjolras, and there is no one in the world who wants you two to be happy more than me.”
“I don’t know, Combeferre might’ve given you a run for your money, once upon a time at least,” Grantaire said.
Joly ignored him. “But like I said, you’re no longer sneaking around and hooking up when the worst thing that could happen was Enjolras getting a slap on the wrist for associating with an ex-felon.” He took a deep breath. “So if there is any chance of being something more, or, frankly, anything at all, you and Enjolras need to have a conversation about what that actually means. For both of you.”
Grantaire sighed heavily. “Yeah,” he said, a little sourly. “Because if there’s anything that Enjolras and I are good at, it’s talking about our feelings.”
— — — — —
“Are you familiar with Deuxmoi?” Grantaire asked as he let himself into his apartment.
Enjolras glanced up from where he was reading the New York Times on the couch. “Is that a Franglish term for ‘fuck me’?” he asked, tilting his head back automatically for Grantaire to drop a kiss on to his lips. “Because it’s not a particularly good one.”
Grantaire waved a dismissive hand as he sank down onto the couch next to him. “No, it’s an instagram thing.”
“Right, because you know me, I am particularly involved with social media,” Enjolras said, already returning to the newspaper.
But Grantaire tugged it out of his hands, tossing it down on the coffee table. “You should be,” he said. “Per Politico, you’re one of the most social media-savvy politicians.”
Enjolras barked a laugh. “I happen to have a very excellent team,” he said, shifting so that he was facing Grantaire. “Once I told Courfeyrac he could have free reign over my Twitter account, I haven’t had to give it a single thought.”
“Don’t forget instagram and TikTok,” Grantaire murmured, leaning in to kiss him. “You’re a viral sensation.”
But Enjolras stopped him with a light hand on his chest. “Is this conversation going somewhere, or…?”
Grantaire sighed, sitting back. “We were spotted.”
“Spotted?”
“At the Musain,” Grantaire said sourly. “Someone submitted a picture of us – or, well, you, and a blurry shot of the back of my head – to a gossip site.”
Enjolras nodded slowly. “I’m assuming this would be the ‘Deuxmoi’ in question?”
“Got it in one.”
Something darkened in Enjolras’s expression. “So, let me guess, Combeferre got to you? Gave you a stern talking-to about dragging me down and sullying my good reputation?”
Grantaire half-smiled. “Actually, no. It was Joly. And he wasn’t so much worried about your reputation as he was about, well, mine.” He shrugged in a way that seemed to be aiming for nonchalance. “Or lack thereof.”
Enjolras’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t like the sound of this.”
“Neither do I, but unfortunately, this means we probably need to have a conversation that we’ve been putting off for, oh, ten or so years now.”
Grantaire said it heavily, and Enjolras went very still. “Let me guess, the ‘what are we’ conversation?”
“No,” Grantaire said firmly, reaching out for Enjolras’s hand and lacing their fingers together. “You and I know what we are. We’ve always known.”
Enjolras smiled slightly, lifting their entwined hands to kiss Grantaire’s knuckles. “Then what?”
Grantaire took a deep breath. “Are we doing this thing for real?” Enjolras froze and Grantaire swallowed before barreling forward. “Because you know that I am happy to be your anonymous dark-haired man for as long as you’ll have me. But eventually, someone’s going to figure out who I am. And while we may know exactly who we are and what there is between us, it is long past time we decided if we want the entire world to know as well.”
Enjolras wet his lips before asking quietly, “Do you want the entire world to know?”
“That’s not really the point—”
“It is,” Enjolras said. “It’s exactly the point. Because if you think that I’m the one hesitating, that I’ve been hesitating at any point of this past decade, you’re out of your mind.”
Grantaire barked a laugh before scrubbing a hand across his mouth. “That’s awfully ableist of you, Congressman.”
Enjolras gave him a look. “It’d be more so if you weren’t the one who describes your mental illness as, and I quote, ‘Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs’ to anyone who will listen.”
“Fair enough.”
“But seriously, I was ready to sign a disclosure statement with New York County back when I was in the PD’s office, acknowledging my relationship with a known felon,” Enjolras said, “especially someone whose only felony was for stopping a police officer from beating me to death.”
Grantaire’s expression darkened. “I did a little more than stop him.”
Enjolras didn’t bother arguing that point. “And you’ve never been arrested for or implicated in a violent crime since then.”
Grantaire sighed. “Fine, but there’s also the misdemeanors—”
“A couple of possession charges and one very memorable public intoxication charge, if memory serves,” Enjolras said dismissively.
“—And the rehab and everything else,” Grantaire finished. “Joly may not be worried about your reputation, but I am. I always have been.” He hesitated before adding, “Because if even if you and I know who we are and what we are to each other, that doesn’t change the fact that you deserve better.”
Enjolras just shrugged. “Maybe. But I want you.”
Grantaire eyed him warily. “So what are you saying?”
“I’m saying fuck Deuxmoi,” Enjolras said, with the kind of savage fervor he normally only saved for political speeches. “Fuck Page Six. Fuck Perez Hilton, if that’s even still a thing.” He squeezed Grantaire’s hand. “Let’s do this.”
Grantaire stared at him. “You’re serious.”
“Sure. The central theme of my reelection campaign was going to be about funding for community support networks to prevent recidivism in violent offenders.” Enjolras leaned in and kissed his cheek. “What better excuse than to talk about my personal support for a formerly violent felon?”
Grantaire rolled his eyes. “I’m hardly the poster boy for this. My privilege—”
“—Is exactly what’s important to highlight,” Enjolras said simply. “You had the opportunities and support you needed because of your privilege, and it’s why it’s vital to extend those opportunities and support to those without your privilege.”
Shaking his head slowly, Grantaire bit his lip before saying hesitantly, “I don’t know…”
“I’m also happy not mentioning you at all publicly, and just going on with our lives, but I’d rather we got ahead of the inevitable attempts at scandal.” Enjolras shrugged. “But it’s up to you. Whatever you want to do. Just as long as we can still be us, that’s all I care about.”
Grantaire hesitated before asking, “Will I have to move to DC?”
Enjolras laughed. “Fuck no,” he said, kissing Grantaire before adding, “Let me have the excuse to leave that swamp as often as humanly possible.”
Grantaire smiled, cupping Enjolras’s cheek with his free hand and running his thumb across Enjolras’s cheek before saying simply, “Then ok. Let’s do it.”
Enjolras grinned. “Really?”
Grantaire nodded. “Really.”
Enjolras turned his head to kiss the palm of Grantaire’s hand before saying, “Then I’ll text Courf. Have him start working on a statement.
He grabbed his phone to do just that, and Grantaire waited patiently for him to finish before tugging Enjolras into his lap. “Great. And while he does that, you and I can do a little work of our own—” He was interrupted by Enjolras’s phone buzzing. “You can’t tell me that he’s drafted a statement already.”
Enjolras just laughed. “Knowing Courf, he’s had a dozen different drafts on file just for this moment, but…” He swiped his phone open, his brow furrowing. “Ah. We’re going in a different direction.”
Grantaire’s eyes narrowed. “What does that mean?”
Enjolras shrugged. “Courfeyrac says there’s some kind of trending meme on Twitter that’s perfect for this. “
“Do I want to know?”
“Probably not,” Enjolras murmured, leaning in to kiss Grantaire. “I’m just going to take his word for it.”
Grantaire kissed him back before asking, “Will you at least let me see?”
Enjolras rolled his eyes but obediently handed his phone over. “Sure. He claims this’ll work.”
Grantaire frowned down at the picture on the phone before shrugging. “Well. Good luck with that.” He turned his attention back to Enjolras. “Now, where were we?”
He tossed Enjolras’s phone down without taking another look at the tweet that Courfeyrac had sent over.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mon avis

Field Work Ch 10
https://www.hindustantimes.com/entertainment/angelina-jolie-s-birthday-gift-20-m-heart-shaped-island-for-brad-pitt/story-aOmENYntIF1kN5KNo6yKUP.html
Max Weber’s Theory of class is demonstrated in this article. He states that the 3 P’s: Power, property, and prestige describes the hierarchy system. As shown in the article above Angelina Jolie buys Brad Pitt an island worth millions.  This can be flipped many ways to make money and can be passed down. This island holds value and gives them a sense of prestige among normal citizens who cannot have this.

Karl Marx’s theory of social class states that he condemned capitalism as a system that alienates the masses. His reasoning was that although workers produce things for the market, market forces, not workers, control things. People are required to work for capitalists who have full control over the means of production and maintain power in the workplace. This article correlates because it shows how the workers are coming together as a whole to demand better working conditions and wages. These people are part of a group that sells their labor to capitalists for income.

https://exclusive.multibriefs.com/content/the-real-reason-rich-kids-do-better-in-school/education
Bourdieu’s theory seeks to show that social agents develop strategies which are adapted to the structures of the social worlds that they inhabit. This article correlates with this theory because it explains how cultural capital affects education. Class can shape students' educational  experiences even at a young age. This limits their opportunities to begin with. Educational inequality is a real thing and affects many students causing them to have limited access to cultural capital.

Since I was rereading chapters with les amis for a fic, I decided to write down what we know about every of them except Enjolras and Grantaire. I used 1828 for counting age because it is the year Marius was introduced to them.
Why are everyone fucking lawyers and medics?!
Not like they had a lot of choice. According to French wikipedia there was only 5 faculties in Sorbonne in 19th century: Faculty of Science (biology, chemistry, physics), Faculty of letters (philology and philosophy), Faculty of theology, faculty of law and Faculty of Medicine.
Also all of them are from the south of France except Laigle (he is from Meaux)
Combeferre
- age: unknown, but he finished his internship by the 1832
- medic (these two aren't widely known, it's from the part 5, book 1, chapter 4)
- knows fucking everything, walking wikipedia
- goes to public lectures
- loves theater (but theater was a very common entertainment in XIX century like TV and videogames now)
- believes that proper education and popularization of science is the way to make world better
- believes in some "unbelievable" for his time things like anesthesia, photography, telegraph and flights
- nice and gentle person
- has influence on Enjolras' political believes
- "murder by words" - 100
- against using dirty methods for the good cause
Jehan
- age: unknown
- the only son of very rich parents
- always in love
- very compassionate for oppressed groups
- loves Middle Ages and defends paganism
- "his voice was ordinarily delicate, but suddenly grew manly"
- plays flute
- poet
- learned 4 foreign language only for read his favorite poets
- very shy and very brave at the same time
- constantly blushes
- he is very into social issues; he study alot to understand how society works and how it can be fixed (unfortunately he didn't live long enough to read Marx and Engels)
- dresses badly
- stops being shy when he exited and becomes laughing and lyric
Feuilly
- age: unknown
- workingman, a fan-maker ("Feuilly, with his fingers skilled in painting the delicate sticks of fans", awww)
- orphan- self-educated (Feuilly never been taught to read and write, not very common in Paris, but he wasn't from Paris)
- for him education was a way to freedom
- the only one who was very concerned about other countries than France and was very intense in his speeches
Courfeyrac
- age: 21 or 22 in 1828 (4-11-5 and some math)
- despite of his leftist view he is a bourgeois in his soul (sorry but Hugo said so)
- can make friends in two days
- "Enjolras was the chief, Combeferre was the guide, Courfeyrac was the centre. The others gave more light, he shed more warmth; the truth is, that he possessed all the qualities of a centre, roundness and radiance".
- a tactful and very helpful friend (he never asks Marius uncomfortable questions but always helps him)
- passionate and dramatic (he literally trow the copy of Touquet Charter in the fireplace)
- witty
Bahorel
- age: unknown but he has been a student for 10 years in 1828 and he participated in "the bloody tumult of June, 1822, on the occasion of the burial of young Lallemand", so he is at least 27 years old in 1828
- studies law
- good-natured and kind but brazen and scrappy
- squanders the money
- chaotic good (very chaotic)
- loves fights
- wears waistcoats of very bright colors (a bold fashion statement by the way, but very inelegant)
- his parents are peasants but wealthy ones
- doesn't want to study but enjoys student life I guess
- draws caricatures on his professors
- "he had a penetrating mind and was more of a thinker than appeared to view"
- has connections with different groups of revolutionaries
- has no preferences in places to hang out
Laigle/Lesgle (Bossuet)
- age: 25 in 1828
- studied law before was kicked out
- bald
- extremely unfortunate
- lost all his money and house because of his misfortune
- despite of it he is very optimistic and cheerful
- clever and well-educated
- even his surname is an awful mess of misspelling
Joly
- age: 23 in 1828
- medical student
- most likely has a "medical students' disease". Also he is afraid of the cold but it's not like "lol Joly is worrying about simple disease like that" or "omg he has a terrible medical anxiety". It XIX century, guys, every complication after the cold can kill you.
- he has a cane. I saw a lot of people interpret it only in "Joly is disabled" way but most likely he just uses a cane as an accessory because he wants to look fancy.
- cute, cheerful and very eccentric
- perceptive
(also Enjolras is 22 and Grantaire is 25 in 1828)

Moon in the same sign as your Sun: The blending of the conscious and subconscious makes you charismatic and popular with a powerful presence and forceful character. Luminous and larger than life, you embody the spontaneous energy of the new moon. You have the initiative and conviction to start major projects and see them through to completion. Also, you are not afraid to stand up and take the lead. You hold a lot of potential energy in your body and will often feel a strong urge to make something happen, to get something started. You have the self-confidence and abilities for this role but can often be oblivious to how your powerful energy impacts on the lives of other people. It is not that you do not care about others, you are simply unaware of the strong impression you leave on others.
Marlon Brando
Queen Victoria
Harrison Ford
Karl Marx
Erykah Badu
Moon in a sign next to your Sun: You are more aware than most people of the need to make adjustments in life, and of the “stop and go” energy of life. You may find that you are frequently in the position to adjust your path and your behaviour in order to adapt to others and to life’s circumstances. Often, you may find that you are in “no-win” situations, in which you feel you have to choose a path that conflicts with your inner needs. Indecision is something you may struggle with until you find ways to satisfy your conscious wishes/needs and your inner desires at once.
Steve Jobs
Sigmund Freud
Quentin Tarantino
Elton John
Chris Pratt
Moon in a sign sextile to your Sun: A sense of calm and balance means you should find it easy to make friends and enjoy harmonious relationships. Your ability to get along well with others, and to cooperate and compromise make you are a good team player. You work well in partnership and in groups because you have a steadying, grounding influence.
Jennifer Aniston
Bill Cosby
Mark Hamil
Angelina Jolie
Leonardo da Vinci
Moon in a sign square to your Sun: It is likely you will experience many ups and downs, with many dramas in your life, especially with superiors and authority figures. Negative emotions can rise up, and they get expressed through your ego. This can make you irritable and you may even become quite combative. People may, therefore, be defensive around you, which is often the cause of relationship problems. Your aim is not to react too emotionally, not to take things too personally. However, the inner tension does seem to push you to great achievements in life despite the setbacks. Perhaps you feel you have to prove something to the world. You do have to fight harder than most to succeed but have great powers of regeneration to come back after a setback.
Kanye West
Ariana Grande
Caitlyn Jenner
George W. Bush
Kylie Jenner
Moon in a sign the same element as your Sun: Harmonious personality as the conscience and the subconscious sides are in balance. Even though more passive than aggressive, these people still have an air of authority, with the ambition to get what they want. They are well-liked and attractive though do seem to value their privacy even if they have a high public profile. Quietly self-confident and gracious, Sun trine Moon also indicates a very accurate intuition and potential psychic ability. This aspect always gives the Ascendant trine Part of Fortune, another way of saying a happy and friendly soul who can look forward to wonderful life-experiences, success and admiration.
Whitney Houston
Boris Johnson
Marilyn Monroe
Adolf Hitler
Harry Styles
Moon in a Sign Quincux to your Sun: Your assertive, masculine side can interchange with your emotional feminine side. If one side dominates then tension escalates until a rapid change occurs and tension is relieved. If one side of your personality always dominates, you can seek out your hidden side in others. Such relationships seem harmonious but if your mood changes your partner may not cope, feeling as if they do not know you. In order to avoid the sometimes dramatic tipping point when your stress levels climax, you may learn to adjust, compromise or adapt your behaviour. In this way, a sort of an equilibrium can be reached. You can be very successful in your personal and professional life by living in this highly energized state of give and take. You will learn to accept this heightened state of tension or anxiety. It requires only subtle inner changes and flexibility and masks your insecurities and anxieties.
Kim Kardashian
Dolly Parton
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Bill Gates
Pink
Moon in the sign opposite to your Sun: As if looking in a mirror, the understanding of the subconscious self comes through conscious questioning of the other. You investigate your inner nature and behaviour, through the reactions they provoke in other people and in events around you. This gives you a different perspective, which over time will evolve your sometimes blinkered nature.
Donald Trump
Michael Jackson
Jaden Smith
Maya Angelou
Adam Driver
Mark Zuckerberg

Les Amis as things I’ve written in the margins of my political science readings
Enjolras: let the people live jfc
Courfeyrac: habit theory of virtue: basically, you fake it till you make it
Combeferre: our apartment is a Tragedy of the Commons
Grantaire: disturbingly similar to that one Buddhist monk terrorist but okay
Feuilly: ahaha your American exceptionalism is showing
Bahorel: Okay but fuck Marx, honestly
Joly: Me, sobbing on the floor: wouldn’t that be nice
Bossuet: What is this, Star Trek?
Jehan: I’m sobbing...the general will killed my loved ones
Marius: I like this theory so much that I feel like I’m doing something wrong
Cosette: also gender equality...and like...an end to gender roles...
Eponine: The most ironic thing about this is that American Republicans don’t realize this.  I hate this country.
Musichetta: Western =/= modern
Gavroche: well this is very identity politics
