Holy Diver Dio Released May 25 1983 The first time I heard this album when it was released, I knew that my allegiance to heavy metal music was going to be a lifelong passion. Starting off side one with the heavy prowess of the concert crowd pleaser "Stand Up & Shout" you knew this album would just rock your world. Holy Diver is an all time standard of the awesomeness of Ronnie James Dio as he brings a great dramatic performance of this classic to life. The entire album is full of great songs chock full of his extraordinary guitar chords, and the heavy drumming that is a headbanger's dream! The guitar solos are distinctive to each of the songs and really bring out the rainbow of colors of this album! This is a must have for any 80's Vinyl Rock Collector looking to have an excellent example of that era. California, No. 4. Know what I like about all this vinyl nonsense? Listening so deliberately with no skipping starts putting songs I’ve heard so much I don’t hear them anymore back into their original contexts and refreshing them. Example: I’ve heard Fire and Rain too often and have learned to screen out the sadness and ignore that growling cello or bass or whatever it is, which only barely obeys the song chord changes. It’s really effective and ominous like a musical version of Churchill’s Black Dog of Depression, and lyrically elemental stuff like rain fire sunshine moonlight highways frost etc runs through the whole set. Note: hi, Russ Kunkel!
