12. Any books that disappointed you?

Sadly, yeah. I look at goodreads ratings before adding a book to my TBR AND before reading it, and like there were a couple of books that I personally didn’t enjoy but I can see how other people could like them, but there were three books that were the absolute worst things I have ever read and they all have good ratings?????? 

I’m gonna rant about them, there might be SPOILERS, but honestly, do not waste your time with these books, they are truly terrible.

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena (Goodreads rating: 3.78): First of all, the writing style is just awful, to the point that I don’t even know how this got past an editor. The plot is basically a couple that has a very young baby and they leave the baby alone in their house to go have dinner with their neighbors?? And then when they come back the baby is gone. The woman’s parents are rich, and they hate their daughter’s husband.Turns out that the father of the baby was in debt so one time a random dude approached him and asked him if he wanted to fake the kidnapping of his baby to get money from his in-laws and he agreed??????? And then the kidnapping obviously goes wrong but I don’t remember exactly what happens. Why is this called The Couple Next Door? I have absolutely no idea. The neighbors do literally nothing plot wise.

Behind Closed Doors by B. A. Paris (Goodreads rating: 3.95): What happens is that the main character is a woman in her 30s I think? and she has an underage sister with down’s syndrome (if I remember correctly) who she takes care of because their parents hate the sister?? So this woman can’t have a relationship with men because they always leave because she has to take care of her sister?? So she meets this dude and they get married weeks after they meet because guess what? he loves her sister!! Turns out the dude is a psycho who locks her up and doesn’t allow her to leave his sight and his evil plan is to have the sister move in with them so he can lock her up in the basement for some reason?? So the main character has to escape the house and her psycho husband before her sister, who lives at school, graduates and moves in with them.

No Exit by Taylor Adams (Goodreads rating: 4.03): This is literally The Most Insane book I’ve ever read (I actually listened to the audiobook mostly, and I screamed “what the fuck is going on” in multiple parts). The main character is an art school sophomore on the way to Utah to see her mom during Christmas break because her mom was diagnosed with cancer. She has to stop at a rest stop in the Rockies because there is a blizzard. At the rest stop there are two young dudes (one of them is very creepy), and an older couple who are actually cousins and not a couple. The girl goes outside to see if she can call her sister because her mom had gone into surgery and on her way back inside she walks by one of the cars and inside there is a child in a cage. The snowplows aren’t coming till the next morning so she has to figure out whose car it is and a way to free the child while being trapped in the rest stop with the kidnapper. I know that sounds very interesting BUT the biggest “plot twist” happens 20% into the book, the main character is a complete idiot and the bad guys (yes there are more than one) are complete idiots as well. It’s also very very violent without good reason?? And the ending is The Funniest and Most Insane thing I have ever read: everyone died except the main character, the little girl and the leader of the bad guys, she blew up the rest stop with the bad guy inside but for some reason he came out alive. The little girl made it to the road. The main character has the bad guy’s gun and is threatening to kill him. A cop shows up and, I literally cannot believe this, he shoots the main character because he thinks she’s the kidnapper and she dies. Then the bad guy kills the cop, of course. And then the little girl kills the bad guy. And that’s just the ending but the whole book is almost 300 pages of that kind of stuff. And the funniest quote is something like “she’d mistakenly trusted a kidnapper for the second time that night” like???????

Of course, the photos are not the only thing you might enjoy, Lily’s recaps really are something else, and besides being sarcastic little shit, she’s very often on point. Here’s one paragraph from 1x06:

Snow and Prince Charming have mixed DNA, so for him to look at a windmill and decide to go back to his fake wife is not piquing my interest in their relationship so much as punishing me for caring about them in the first place. It doesn't help that Josh Dallas might seriously be into Ginnifer Goodwin. I mean, if the acting he's doing opposite his fairytale mom is any indication, I don't think that crackling energy in his scenes with Ginnifer is acting. #StartingRumors
