for a thing, do you have any pokemon team ideas for the RGB puzzlers? I may be doing something
Ooohh!!! I love creating Pokemon teams!! Hold up I'm about to go full nerd mode --
Okay so I crafted one for Luke on a whim since he's so connected with animals all ready. We got
Toppy the Rattata,
Theo the Teddiursa,
a Ducklett,
a Chatot,
a Slurpuff,
and a Carbink! (Though Bunnelby, Buneary, or either Nidoran would also work)
(As a bonus, Layton's team includes an Unown, a Sigilyph, and a Galarian Weezing. Phoenix has a Talonflame, a Masquerain, a Sigilyph, and either a Dragonite or a Salamance. Just some sort of Dragon.) (Bonus bonus, Claire has a Chingling/Chimecho on her team.)
Apollo team is a lot harder a think for me. I am coming up with this on the fly okay here we go
Hisuian Arcanine,
a Litleo,
a Larvesta (or maybe even a Slither Wing?),
a Basculin (evolves into Basculegion, of course),
a Goomy (also Hisuian form),
and then maybe a Cacnea. Because prickly jokes.
And then Snufkin team can go one of several ways!! Either he has no traditional team (but there is a Celebi always following him around...), he has an entirely Fish team (Arrokuda, Veluza, Finneon, Bruxish, Magikarp, Barboach), OR he has the team I built for him in ScarVio
a Dragonite (his Moominite, if you will),
a Smoliv,
a Finneon (/Basculin; would tie him to Apollo more),
a Dedenne,
a Klefki,
and either a Larvitar or Bramblin, I can't decide. (Sudowoodo also good.)
Hopefully my theming comes through on Snufkin and Apollo's teams lol thanks for asking this!!!

I wanna do a trainersona thing with my team being based on my pokeplushes. Haven’t figured out how to design my trainer yet, but here’s the team
Names and bios under the cut (including background info from the original plushies)
Sapphire - Dragonite - Main battler of the team and mostly in charge of flying everyone place to place. She’s the biggest team member and tends to act as their bodyguard as well. Caught as a dragonite
Plush was picked up at a convention and stayed in the back window of my car for a few years, but has since been moved inside with everyone else
Regent - Kingdra - Raised from an egg by his trainer, so he sees her as his mother. Considers himself the favorite because of this
Handmade by me because kingdra doesn’t get much merch and I needed one as a cosplay prop. Also the only pokeplush on my bed because he’s over 3ft long and doesn’t fit anywhere else
Prince - Horsea - Adopted by Regent as his little brother. Baby of the group, here for moral support, does not battle
Gift from a friend specifically to go alongside Regent
George - Vaporeon - Caught as a Vaporeon and while he battles with and is cared for by the trainer, he’s unofficially become her mother’s pokemon.
Another con purchase. My mom adores him, but declined my offer to give her the plush. She also named him
Charizard (Orange Juice) - Charizard - The starter. Doesn’t battle much anymore due to his old age, but will if he’s in the mood. Missing a foot from a bad battle ages ago. Got the nickname Orange Juice late in life, but doesn’t respond to it
Childhood plush from when the anime was first airing so VERY old. Foot was chewed off by my dog at the time. I never nicknamed as a child (probably cause Ash didn’t in the anime) so a friend gave him his name a few years ago

What are your favourite pokemon and why?
Ah, what a question. I thought you’d never ask.
Too hard a question to answer without the caveat that I’m obviously going to leave lots of stuff out. But here are some immediate answers that come to mind:
- #1 favourite: Articuno. I’ll always have a soft spot for gen 1 Pokemon that I came to love as a kid watching the anime. Articuno was a big exciting legend of the seasons of the anime I watched as a kid. Ice type, and I love ice types. Partly because they’re rare and cool and can beat dragons, partly I think just because I love snow and ice in real life. Big beautiful majestic bird. What’s not to love?
Others:
- Charmander cute little fireball
- Mew: Nice kitty! Nice psychic kitty! Also I saw the first Pokemon movie in the cinema at a formative age.
- Lapras: Pretty. Water and ice. Cool in the anime. Sprite for all surfers in early games.
- Seel and Dewgong: adorable.
- Eevee and Eeveeloutions: nice kitties
- Weaville: dark and ice and cat
- Suicine: giant pretty water cat
- Ninetales: pretty fire cat
- Rapidash: pretty fire horse
- Marill: cute little guy that was nice in the anime
- Starmie: cool star that shoots ice and has psychic powers
- Alakazam and Gengar: love them for the same reason – terrifyingly cool in the anime
- Gardevoir: powerful cool fairy
- Mismagius: cool-looking scary ghost
- Zapdos, Moltres, Charizard, and Ho-Oh – not quite as cool as Articuno because not ice, but all giant legendary birds that can shoot something are fucking cool
- Giratina: dragon/ghost is the coolest type combination
- Luxray: dark electric kitty (should be dark/electric type so I could use her when I only use dual types, annoyingly isn’t, though Luxray does get dark/electric typing in some Drayno hacks and that’s great)
- Raikou and Entei: large, majestic, terrifying
- Litten: small, adorable, terrifying, firecat
- Houndoom: dark, dramatic large firedog
- Arcanine: fluffy, friendly large firedog
- Pyroar: look, I really like the canines and felines, okay?
- Chandelure: creepy ghostly part of old furniture is a cool enough idea, but then it’s also fire type?
- Chansey: will heal other Pokemon and occasionally throw eggs
- Milotic: pretty, powerful, should obviously be part fairy, why the fuck isn’t this thing part fairy?
- Squirtle: I liked it when he wore those sunglasses fighting fires in the anime
- Spiritomb: Don’t fuck with this cool ball of dark ghost
-  Kyurem: sorry, actually dragon/ice is the coolest typing
- Salamence: people dislike this guy for not being Dragonite, but Dragonite didn’t even have wings
- Gyarados: terrifying in the anime, should be part dragon
- Alteria: pretty flying dragon
- Kangaskhan: like a terrifying version of the Winnie the Pooh character
I started this list with the idea that I'd cap it at some specific number, but then I just kept listing Pokemon I like. I guess I have to stop listing Pokemon at some point, so that point may as well be now. Butterfree. Okay, I'm done. Thank you for the question.

F-Zero GP Legend Anime Headcannons➩Pokemon Partner(s)
{Before I begin let me just say this, you may not like the Pokemon partners I give to the certain characters I chose, that's ok}
(Anyways here's some Pokemon I think these characters would have)
Jody Summer- Stufful and Meowstic (Female),I think these Pokemon would be her Pokemon partners, then stufful will evolve to Bewear and it can be a useful partner to have for missions since she trained stufful with her brother as well (I will Mention his Pokemon partner(s)) two, Meowstic was once a Espurr which was gifted from her brother when Espurr followed him back home. It later evolved during a mission. Goodra is a good choice and may smother people in slime by accident which may cause a mess in HQ.
Lucy Liberty-Definitely A wigglytuff, reason why because it was a Pokemon she raised when it was an egg and it was a special one she found. Wigglytuff was once jigglypuff which had a high temper on using pound if she was threatened, And possibly tinkaton because of it's crazy ability to bash pwoplw with its hammer and may enjoy hurting passing by Corviknight. (this happened when it came out it's love ball)
Ryu Suzaku/Rick Wheeler-Altaria, I mean..it's a dragon type and flying type and it is a similar typing as his machine the dragon bird because altaria is a bird but with a dragon and flying typing. Altaria was a gift from his gf Haruka when she found it as a swablu 150 years ago. (yes, it's still alive since it was in it's pokeball) Altaria was a very joyful pokemon to ryu/rick very jolly to him and haruka. ryu/rick has obtained a key stone and a altarianite from the "lost" gift from haruka with the note saying 'use this at the right time with altaria' which may have shocked him though but used it which mega evolved. Dragonite would be a good choice too because it's a flying and dragon type, and I bet Dragonite would recognize Haruka with her Miss Killer persona.
Dr. Stewart-I feel like he would have a chansey and a jolteon(which evolved from eevee from a thunderstone) Chansey is like a helper pokemon since it can heal other pokemon and people with heal pulse. it's a great pokemon to heal the ones needed. for jolteon...it can help with electricity working at clinics to power things up.
Clank Hughes- Rotom, reason why I chose this to be his partner pokemon is because, Rotom can go through any electrical items around and help around the cafè and help Clank with technology. Although Rotom is a trickster so it likes to go through electronics just to mess with him. Rotom does behave sometimes. Rotom has been with Clank for a while. Boltund might be like a good guard dog that can also mess around with technology.
Miss Killer/Misaki Haruka- for starters she has 2 partner pokemon which is an umbreon and a mawile(can mega-evolve) although, she caught these pokemon it was not gifted to her and has found a mawilite that Mawile held. (When Caught) As haruka, she has had a yamper as a pet 150 years ago (it was also given to Ryu/Rick when the others found the other pokeball) Yamper was her pet for a long time and hasn't evolved yet.
Captain Falcon/Andy Summer: I Feel like he would have a Cinderace since rabbits are his favorite animal and Cinderace evolved from a scorbunny which was gifted to him from his sister, Jody, she found scorbunny injured and brought it to Her brother to help the poor scorbunny. Cinderace is very fond of Andy and very.. Very.. Attached to him. Now Cinderace helps him out in the falcon house cafe helping him with cooking. Then another pokemon came along. It was a litten which evolved into incineroar, this pokemon was brought in from someone in the cafe to let Andy know this pokemon was abandoned and started to take care of litten when it evolves, this pokemon was the important partner to bring along in times of danger. Incineroar knows darkest lariat which is commonly used in larger threats, it can easily knock out others which is a perfect command for incineroar. Cinderace and Incineroar do get along well, and Cinderace can be used as a back up and knows the move pyroball which it can be commanded. Braviary would be a great choice for his Bounty Hunter Missions.
Lisa Brilliant-I feel like she would have a Ninetales as her partner and also a sneasel, because I know she wanted to steal something and she can use Sneasel to steal items. Ninetales would be her back up to Sneasel, oh and a Sableye because it can help with heists and finding jewels.(Ninetales is from the kanto region)
Super Arrow- I feel like he would have a Rowlet... It's similar to his class of style and it was picked out from his wife. It evolved into decidueye, and it's a really loyal pokemon. A Noctowl, that would be a good pokemon, I just learned that the Owl he has is named Zukk, so he might be stubborn with Rowlet and Noctowl.
Mrs. Arrow-Her pokemon would be consisted with bug and flying types, I feel like she would have a beautifly and a Starly, I would feel like she would like anything beautiful. And when it evolves to staraptor, she might spoil it so much. Togekiss would be a good one because it's adorable, and may be in good use for strong fairy attacks.
[And... That's all!]

for the pokemon asks:
Volt Switch / Aerial Ace / Shadow Ball / Cherish Ball / Ultra Ball
Loooooong response becauuse lotta asks!
Volt Switch: Favorite Electric types(s)
Tumblr media
Listed roughly in order from most to I guess 6th most, I found grubbin very charming and I do love vikavolt but if I'm picking one from the line I just gotta love chargabug being both a battery, a bus and a compact little guy.
Rotom rules because electric poltergeists are fun and I love the variety of forms, flaffy is some movie nostalgia, enjoying the static electricity wool idea and some nostalgia for having one (eventually ampharos) in soul silver. Toxtricity gets points for being electric guitar pokemon and the closest I'm gonna get to metal rep (even if they are more punk rock) and the other two are riding the train of just being based on irl animals I like.
Aerial Ace: Favorite Flying types(s)
Tumblr media
(honorable mentions to Archeops, Vesiquen and Gliscor)
This one is in less particular order than the first in terms of faves because I kept remembering things and changing my mind.
Love gyrados, a childhood fave and sure the little guy into cool big scary guy is a common trope but they're the og! and also a threatening wind sock. Gyrados rocks. Love Honchkrow, maybe my top 1 favourite flying? The mafia don theme is fun and its just got such great personality.
Tumblr media
Yanmega is a prehistoric bug that kicks ass and does a great job conveying that irl dragonflies are apex predators. Vullaby is fucking adorable and I love its fucking, human skull nappy. Perfect goth baby. Drifloon is a hillariously ghoulish little It balloon. Mega pinsir is a great glow up for one of the favorite original bugs and is such an outright demonic looking bug pokemon but despite how it looks its one of the only megas that doesn't have an entry about being in pain, fucked up or more aggressive, its just fucking zoomies
Tumblr media
Shadow Ball: Favorite Ghost types(s)
Ok now we are at the Hardest of all questions, also theres no team builder that has all these regions together so from scratch time:
Tumblr media
Shoutout honorable mention to pretty much every single ghost type especially Shedninja and gengar and Dhelmise and litwick and-
Mimikyu is favourite number one, its adorable, its ability is fun, is a great meta commentary on pikaclone mascot attempts, my perfect aesthetic of creepy cute love it. Houndstone aesthetically is so good and I wish there was actual art of it I could grab. Phantump is cool, cute and a wonderfully dark pokedex entry, love to have Evan on my team.
Phantump is finally a jackolanturn pokemon and I love the route of not just making the face the carving but doing a fun little black cat/bat thing with it! Halloween! Huge fan of OG bannete the scuzzy little haunted puppet and its fucked up gimp mouth and mega bannette just expands on that more and more, it kicks ass and looks like you let 12 year old me design it (complementary). Duskull is really fun, the one eye pendulum swinging in the skull, its cool little mask, very cute/creepy. Huge fan of dusclops as well but for different reasons and then unfortuantly dusknoir gets too busy for me. Does mean I can eviolite dusclops tho!
Cherish Ball: Favorite Gen IV Pokémon
Activates my secret autism power of having already compiled in a doc my favourites of each gen, ask only asks for one though so gotta give it to my man toxicroak
Tumblr media
delightfully slimy little smile, pleasing colour scheme, love a toxic toad and his fucked up little claws.
Ultra Ball: Favorite Pseudo-legendary(ies)
Tumblr media
Apparently Volcarona doesn't technically count as one but fuck bulbapedia its the only bug one and it has the stats, high level to hang. Moth light obsession/khepri sun god bug theming is sick. It rules and it counts. Tyranitar and Dragonite are both here from childhood nostalgia for the show and leaf green respectively, I love that Tyranitar is godzilla and mean and I love that one of the strongest of the first pokemon and only dragon type was just a chubby guy. Garchomp is a cool land shark, star on it feels unnecessary, Hydreigon is a cool fucked up and evil hydra dragon with head hands and tatered wings, really love the ghost dinosaur concept of dragapult so it gets to be number 6 I'm just not actually that into the stealth bomber aesthetic.

Pokemon Journeys’ Bea.... Kinda Sucks
Tumblr media
Hello again! After a weekend of contemplating, I’ve decided to write a little blog review of Pokemon Journeys’ version of Bea from SwSh. Originally, I was planning to do after we get a bit more episodes of Bea, but with all the leaked episode titles we’ve been getting, I’ve got a feeling we won’t see this lady until sometime at late-February, or even March, so let’s just get this outta the way now.
Also, please note that since Bea has only made two actual appearances in the anime, many of the points I will talk about will be subject to change depending on how the writers will handle her in the future, but with all that said, let’s get right to it.
Before we begin, let me just say this: in the games, I find Bea okay. And in Twilight Wings, I love her character and I feel she had a great amount of focus and depth. However, in the anime, I find her.... a little lame. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate her or anything and I feel she has a ton of great potential. So much so, that she could honestly surpass her Twilight Wings variation, but as of now, I’ve got some problems with her.
Problem #1: Her Goal/Motivation
So my first major problem with her character is her goal. Like almost every other trainer we’ve seen in Journeys, Bea wants to rise her rank in the World Coronation Series so that she can battle Leon and take his place as the world’s strongest trainer. But here’s my question for though: Why? Why do you want to be seen as the world’s strongest trainer?
In many past regions, almost all of Ash’s past rivals had the “what” to their goals: Conquering a regional league. However, many of them also had different “why’s” that added to their own motivation. Paul had a brother to prove himself stronger than, Alain had his whole thing with solving the secrets of Mega Evolution for Lysandre as well as finding a way to cure Chespie’s coma, and Gladion wanted to find his dad. From Bea, I’m literally getting nothing from her. Does she have a master she wants to prove herself to? Well, we later find out she trained under Johto’s Chuck, but that’s all really. Does she have some kind of troubling childhood where she was initially seen as weak by her peers, and now with the chance in hand, she can prove everyone wrong by becoming the world’s strongest trainer? As interesting as that sounds, that doesn’t seem to be the case, either.
Without any proper motivation, I have no reason to care for her goals. Please, writers, in her next appearance, please give us the “why” to her actions and not the “what”. Bea has a really cool design, so this is your chance in giving her a cool backstory to boot.
Problem #2: Her Team Sucks
As I’ve mentioned, Bea wants to conquer her way through the World Coronation Series and take Leon’s place. And how is she gonna do that? With a team of all-fighting types? That’s not good enough!
Fighting types are awesome undoubtedly, but like all types, they have their weaknesses. Imagine if Bea faced off against a trainer who, in turn, had a team of all fairy, flying, psychic, or ghost types. She would be completely screwed and she must’ve been pretty lucky to reach her current World Coronation status with a team like hers. There’s honestly a huge list of trainers I can think of who could completely screw Bea over, like Agatha, Skyla, or Sabrina. Heck, if you really think about it, if she were to face Leon, who we know possesses a Dragapult and Charizard, she honestly wouldn’t get far due to Dragapult’s half ghost typing and Gigantamax Charizard crushing her team like ants because it’s a flippin’ half flying giant. And if she were to take Leon’s place, it probably wouldn’t last long since someone can easily identify her preferred type and screw her over with the typings I’ve previously mentioned.
As a matter in fact, let’s imagine a what-if scenario: Ash using Gengar against her Grapploct, who the anime seems to be emphasizing as one of her strongest Pokemon. Looking up her Grapploct’s moveset in the anime, Detect would only delay the inevitable and Close Combat and Octolock wouldn’t do anything due to Gengar’s ghost typing, leaving Liquidation as the only option Grapploct would have to hurt Gengar. Meanwhile, all of Gengar’s own moves can easily affect Grapploct, especially Psychic. And before you bring up the time Gengar lost to Korrina’s Mienshao, keep in mind this, he was taken down by a Beat Up attack, a dark type move that’s honestly pretty broken if you think about it. Does Grapploct know any dark type moves? Nope. Would any of her other Pokemon know some? Most likely, but my point still stands that, with the right mon, you can easily screw up her own team.
That’s why many Champions and Elite Trainers have well-diversed teams. Because if they just stuck to one type, then someone could easily take advantage of that. Many of Ash’s past rivals also had well-diversed teams to keep the stakes high whenever Ash battled them, just look at Gary, Paul, Trip, Sawyer, and Alain. Speaking of stakes...
Problem #3: The Stakes Are Kinda Small
As I just mentioned, because of how straightforward her team is, the stakes of her and Ash’s rivalry are honestly kind of small in that regard. But that’s not all. I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but in all of her battles against Ash so far, I still don’t feel the reason to take her seriously.
Going back in her debut appearance, before her battle against Ash starts, she states that she previously beaten Korrina and called her ‘weak’. And to that, all I have to say, so? Ash has already beaten her a while back, and then he became a champion, and then he beaten her again. I have no idea what you’re exactly trying to prove with that, Bea. Not to mention, we didn’t even get to see who she used against Korrina and her Mega Lucario. Was it someone in her current roster or perhaps a secret weapon? Why would you hide this from us, writers?
Anywayz, going into the battle itself, Ash lost without defeating a single Pokemon. ...Yeah, I’m still not seeing the reason why I should take her seriously, considering the only mons Ash used were little baby Riolu and newcomer Farfetch’d. If it were a three-on-three with Ash using Dragonite, but he still lost, then I would see Bea as a big threat to his goals, but no. And while the lost did lower Ash’s own rank, be quickly raised it back up off-screen by her next appearance, so I guess that wasn’t much of a big deal overall.
In their next battle, Ash used Pikachu and Riolu again and it ended up in a draw, affecting neither of their ranks. Even with a draw, I don’t see any reason to take Bea seriously. While she managed to take down Pikachu, it should be noted that it took two of her Pokemon to do the job, plus Pikachu’s one of the most inconsistent characters in history, so him losing to Grapploct doesn’t really bring in a lot of stakes. And since Riolu and Grapploct tied, that pretty much spoils the fact that Ash’s aura dog will most likely take the W in one of their next battles, especially since Riolu has now evolved into Lucario.
Most rivals in the past usually consistently beat Ash a few times in a row to really set up the stakes for their rivalry. It would add interesting conflict and dynamic in their final confrontation, but considering the recent tie and that Ash only used his two newest mons in their first battle, I don’t really care about Bea as a rival. Not to mention, it took two mons to take down Pikachu, Dragonite and Gengar’s typings royally screw her over, Lucario’s evolution and Farfetch’d’s future one might set them up to be equal or even stronger than her mons, and Dracovish has the potential to be an absolute tank.
Final Points
Overall, with what we’re given so far, Bea kind of sucks as a rival. We don’t have any motivation or depth, her team sucks, and there aren’t really many stakes. She’s pretty much the generic mean boss lady we will have to defeat by the end of the journey. I honestly get a lot more stakes from FF7′s Turks.
But is she the worst rival that Ash has ever gotten? Not by a long shot, especially since the likes of Nando and Cameron exist omg Cameron why do you exist? And like I said, since she’s only made two appearances, there’s still a lot of room for improvement, so many of my issues with her could change over time. I just wanted to get this off of my chest and hopefully provide some insight to my fellow fans on how Bea could become a better character in the anime.
Though, I kind of feel there could be some better directions with her. Even if we get more development, her team will suck by the end of the day, so why not make her a rival for Korrina? They’re both fighting type specialists who aim to be the strongest, plus you could pull off a super cool rivalry over which is stronger; Mega Evolution or Gigantamaxing, with Lucario and Machamp respectively. I honestly feel Hop would be a better rival for Ash due to similar personalities, goals, and diversity in teams. Assuming Hop exists in the anime verse, of course.
If you made it this far, thank you very much for reading my thoughts over Journeys’ Bea! Please feel free to follow for more anipoke content! (am i cool already)

And so, our heroes return home after defeating every challenge in the region.  Time to recount their accolades and talk about the run as a whole.
For anyone after a full breakdown of the personalities of these Pokemon, here’s what I drafted up.
Maple the Meganium, the first Pokemon I got.  Well, technically that’s a lie.  See, I bred Bayleaf with Hoppip, to get Leech Seed out of the deal, and an Impish nature.  Honestly, this was the single best decision I’ve made.  Leech Seed is so goddamn good, especially when you have an absurd wall like Steelix in the mix.  Even when it wasn’t just Maple dunking on fools herself, Steelix received so much benefit from that one move it’s amazing.  She didn’t get to fight that often, but as a supportive Pokemon she was tremendous.
Giselle the Furret, technically the longest standing member of the team.  She was...okay she was fun, but not great.  I think if I had less of an all-star team behind her, this run would’ve been more frustrating than anything.  She did have a surprisingly great moveset and performance overall, but Giselle’s main struggle was just...being Furret.  Bad stats, hard to make work against some of the powerhouses in the game when under-leveled.  But she performed well.  Raw Strength damage was solid, Sucker Punch took out several key threats, notably in Lance’s teams when he got caught Outraging, Shadow Claw was able to tear apart Will’s team both times though it wasn’t always used to the fullest.  Furret did surprisingly well.
Blanche the Steelix.  The actual, undisputed MVP of this run.  Curse Steelix is so goddamn good.  I’ll admit, up through the first run of the League, I actually considered dropping her.  Accuracy was the bane of her existence, she had like no good moves (Seriously, Rock Tomb was the best she learned naturally, it was a disaster), and it was hard to see how helpful she would be later on.  But then we got Earthquake.  And suddenly, a Rock move and Earthquake was enough to threaten a lot of the League.  She beat Koga single-handedly.  She took out half of Karen’s team, including Houndoom after taking a Flamethrower.  She helped take down Lance thanks to the buffed defense and Rock coverage.  Blanche was the single best Pokemon we had this entire run and I love her.  10/10.
Elena the Kadabra.  Fun fact, by design I like Kadabra better, and truthfully it reminds me of the anime, with Sabrina in particular, who I absolutely loved in the anime, so I like running Kadabra over Alakazam when possible.  I decided to do that this time, and frankly Kadabra’s still good enough.  When called upon, Kadabra kicks ass.  Dunks on Bruno, dunks on Will with Shadow Ball, deals respectable damage, and actually takes respectable damage from special moves with Calm Mind boosts.  I was surprised that part of the key to beating Red was having Elena Recover her way through Snorlax’s Blizzard PP so Meganium could sit on it (until getting crit by Giga Impact anyway).  Very solid Pokemon.
Clara the Tentacruel.  I feel my assessment is a bit unfair because of Hidden Power Electric taking down many threats she’d otherwise struggle with, but then I think that Sludge Bomb would’ve covered it just fine with the Poison chance so I’m willing to say Tentacruel is one of the best Pokemon to run in this entire game.  The advantageous matchups Tentacruel has are tremendous.  Lance is a non-issue if she can KO Dragonite.  Red’s Lapras and Blastoise really struggle to do anything to it, and those are his strongest Pokemon.  If you don’t have a Psychic type, it resists Fighting so it’s a good Bruno answer.  Most of Karen’s team is scared of it too.  Koga can’t poison it.  Like, in the toughest fights, Tentacruel is super clutch.  I’m surprised I’ve never run Tentacruel before, I feel like I’ve been missing out.
Diana the Dragonite.  I feel kinda bad, because I got that super important Extremespeed version, and then just made it use the HMs no one else wanted.  Fly was necessary, and Waterfall would’ve been Tentacruel’s fourth move if it weren’t for the HP Electric.  So as the last member, it got stuck with HM duty.  And yet still was amazing.  Outrage spam with Dragon Fang is just hilarious.  So many teams that don’t resist that move just crumple.  I wouldn’t say she was a standout like Blanche or Clara, or even like Maple, but she did some amazing work for basically using one move all the time.
So, at the end of this run...frankly this is one of the most memorable runs of Pokemon I’ve ever had.  I know I’ve had others that were fun, but a lot of the time I can’t always recall what we had used or what made it fun.  But this?  This one will endure.  This team beat the League, in both runs, in record low levels, being 43 or below on entry to the first run, and 59-62 in their follow-up.  Then again Red, 60-62, which is lower than ever by over 10 levels.  The sheer ability this team demonstrated was magnificent, and I really, really enjoyed running it.  I got to use a lot of first-time Pokemon in Furret, Tentacruel, and Dragonite.  I got to use Meganium for the first time in...well, a really long time.  I used Kadabra without worrying about the stat buff from evolving for the first time in ever for this generation.  I’ve used Steelix before, but never this consistently.  It’s usually picked up off the bench for the Red fight because it has Rock Climb, kills Pikachu, and then does nothing.  This is the first time I’ve used it basically the whole run, and it was an incredibly useful MVP of the team.  This was just so, so much fun.
Now I kinda want to play another game in the series, because I’m in a good mood with Pokemon.  I just can’t decide which.  I’m kinda feeling Gen 3?  But I’m not sure if I’m feeling Emerald for a serious time run, or ORAS for more of a victory lap kinda thing.  I’ll figure it out.

for the pokemon asks, do all the ones that end in 7!
7. Favorite gym leader
Ooh this one is tough. There are very few of them I don't like. I think I'm gonna say Raihan though!! Bc his hoodie is the coolest shit ever and I love his little dragon tooth and how he goes live on insta while I beat his ass ❤️ Elesa is also super high up in my rankings though.
17. Three favorite pokemon
Lopunny, Wigglytuff, aaaaand Appletun!!!!
27. Overall favorite generation of pokemon
Gen 2 will always be special to me bc of the scope of the game itself and the very loving way it paid tribute to the originals. But I think Sun and Moon were the absolute most fun! And Guzma is my boy.
37. Favorite Flying type
Ok I actually forgot which Pokemon were flying types and I had to like google a list to refresh my memory but Vespiquen and Scyther are actually my faves!!! Vespiquen bc big bee bitch and Scyther bc when I was little I thought it was a dragon and I was enamored with it
47. Favorite rock type
Tyranitar!! My baby Kiwi been out here killing Dragonites for me since 2001.
57. Favorite dark type
Houndoom ofc!
67. Favorite animated adaptation
Diamond and Pearl had a great theme song but I didn't really watch it. I actually haven't been too into the Pokemon series or movies in 15 or so years but I do really enjoy the Generations (and Twilight Wings and Evolution) side series. The animation style and the way they show the lives of other citizens and some previously game-only characters is so great. The Mystery Dungeon special was likewise very good.
77. Favorite eeveelution
A few years ago I think I would have said Umbreon or Sylveon. But Mermyan the Vaporeon kinda edged the others out. ❤️ Love u Mermyan.

Shiverwood Facilities
(This is a WIP, will probably be updated fairly frequently!)
PREFACE
This blog is a headcanon blog- it is not run as canon, and everything said is my own personal headcanons. The goal of this blog is just to explore the Pokemon world and the lore in ways that canon does not, I don’t claim anything I say to be canon or superior to anybody else’s headcanons.
This blog ignores game mechanics, as they don’t apply to the more realistic approach I’m taking here. I’m operating more under a blend of manga and anime mechanics. Storylines in the games may be acknowledged, but game mechanics (level up system, IVs and EVs, etc) are not canon to this blog.
A note from the person who runs this blog: I am by no means a medical expert, or an expert in real life animals. This is all for fun, and is just my fun way of having a blog for a self-indulgent Pokemon OC. Do not take anything I see here as real-life medical or animal handling advice- I am not a professional in any way.
(I also want to note- I was inspired by the Professor Peach blog to start my own, so shoutout to them for giving me the idea!!)
—————
What do we do?
Shiverwood Facilities itself is dedicated both to Pokemon research and Pokemon care. Our work is primarily based on Pokemon behaviour rather than on any specific Pokemon type, with our primary work being researching into a broad spectrum of Pokemon behaviours, and the care of Pokemon sent to us for care or rehabilitation. We also act as an in-between for Pokemon that need more intensive rehabilitation we can’t offer and we can often take in Pokemon that need to be removed from situations, but who don’t have someone to take them in quite yet.
On the research side of things, I (Professor Laurel) am in charge of most aspects of it. My research is centralized on Pokemon variants, the environmental causes, and the behavioural aspects. I’m also a behaviouralist myself, with a background in that sort of research, so I’m a bit of an encyclopedia on Pokemon behaviour and the habits of various species. I’m most familiar with Dragon, Grass, and Bug type Pokemon, but I can help with pretty much any typing.
Our site is equipped to deal with Pokemon that need care or minimal rehabilitation- anything more intensive we offer to just hold onto the Pokemon in question until someone more qualified can come and pick them up. Pokemon care here covers mental wellbeing and physical health- we have several behaviouralists onsite, including myself, who can get to the root of the problem and help a Pokemon emotionally, as well as trained medical staff who can deal with anything physical, be it injuries or something chronic. Our medical facilities are equivalent to a Pokemon Centre, and we often take in injured wild Pokemon for short stays before releasing them, but we’ll also help out trainers who pass by, or anyone who needs to bring in their Pokemon for a longer stay, free of charge. Any Pokemon left with us, whether found after being abandoned or being surrendered from bad situations, will most likely be rehomed, if not taken in by someone on staff.
We offer tours of the facility, as well as tours of the local habitat. These are both guided either by myself or another staff member with a capable team, just in case. Public areas are clearly marked with signs, same with warning signs for any areas that might be dangerous, and areas closed to the public. We also host a couple of events every season that serve to raise awareness of our work, Pokemon care, Pokemon wellbeing, etc for the public.
—————
Who are you sending your questions to?
Professor Arthur Laurel! That’s me- you can call me Arthur if you want, I’m not big on formalities. I’ve talked about myself already, but I’m the person who will be receiving and answering all of your questions.
I have a smaller team of Pokemon from my trainer days, and all three of them are my trusted partners and some of my very best friends.
Cloudhopper - My Dragonite. She’s been with me the longest and is my partner, gifted to me as a starter as a Dratini when I was going to set out on my Gym Challenge. She’s also a certified service Pokemon, as well as a flying Ride Pokemon. Known for being very protective, usually the one to get me out of trouble, but also very sweet and loving. She does have a wicked sense of humour, though, watch out for if she feels mischievous.
Honeybite - My Appletun. He’s larger than the average Appletun, standing at over 3 feet tall, and known for being the sweetest cuddles there ever was. He’s been with me nearly as long as Cloudhopper. Honeybite’s famous for his cuddles, but don’t underestimate him for his sweet face, he’s quite the little powerhouse when he wants to be, but luckily for us he chooses peace.
Sweetbug - My Vespiquen. She was the last addition to my team, but it’s still been a good decade of having her by my side. She’s a mother hen type between myself and her Combee hive, with a fierce protective streak that has us keeping her hive closed to the public. She often offers honey as a gift to those she cares about, so you can always tell someone’s having a good day when they’ve got a little jar of honey that they didn’t get from me.
—————
Where are we and how can you find us?
Shiverwood is a bit of an exaggeration for a name- we’re located just north of Ballonlea, near the mountains surrounding Wyndon. We’re just north of being hot and humid, and just south of being freezing, so we have some cooler weather for most of the year, although summers can get quite hot. There are designated paths through the thick forest outside of Ballonlea that lead to us, so finding your way isn’t too difficult, but for those who don’t want to travel on foot we can also be reached through Corviknight Taxi and easily spotted from the sky on a flying service Pokemon. We don’t have any water access, the only body of water being a nearby lake, as well as no train access. Walking/riding or flight are the only ways to reach us.
We’re in this area on the standard Galar map.
Tumblr media
—————
What kind of facilities do we have?
MAIN LAB - This is the largest building, it’s the main research facility and where you’ll find me if I’m not cooped up in my lab or out in the field. It also contains a smaller medical facility equipped for minor injuries for both people and Pokemon. Mostly open to the public.
LAUREL’S LAB - Within the Main Lab building. I keep it open to the public for the most part, just know that it’s a mess most of the time, because I believe in organized chaos. My team can be interacted with here if they’re in the mood for it, so if you’ve ever wanted to hug a Dragonite, now’s your chance.
POKEMON CENTER - It’s not an official Pokemon Center, but we call it one because it’s easier. It’s equipped to handle anything from massive medical emergencies to permanent and semi-permanent residents who require more care. Also equipped for human care. We often offer supervised positions to learning medical students so that they can gain experience under the watchful eyes of our doctors. Some of it is open to the public, but the rooms are restricted to trainer and friends and family only, and surgery rooms are completely off limits.
ZEN AREA - This is a combination of a building and a bigger outdoor area. This is where the behaviouralists care for Pokemon’s mental wellbeing- think of it like therapy for Pokemon. The outdoor area is open to the public, but inside the building only the entrance is accessible. This is because inside is where Pokemon who may be volatile or aggressive are cared for, to prevent them from escaping, or harming other patients. We call it the Zen Area because it can be very soothing, patient or not.
CONTAINMENT - Where we hold the Pokemon we’re temporarily holding for someone to come collect. This area is completely closed off to the public due to the usually very aggressive or unpredictable nature of the Pokemon who stay there. This area is meant for temporary stays- it’s a sizeable enough area of the woods right at the base of the mountain, and there’s a pond in there that’s surprisingly deep. This area can handle a wide variety of Pokemon, temporarily, but it can’t handle every single species. In those cases, we relocate them to another facility as quickly as possible.
GREENHOUSES - These are the warmest places in the facility, mostly inhabited by Grass Types, but also home to quite a few Bug Types. Open to the public and plants are available for purchase, with a wide range from leafy greens to berry saplings. The Pokemon here are tamed, and can be adopted. There is one that’s closed off to the public due to the Combee hive in there, but the honey can be bought!
TRAINING FIELD - Most of us are trainers, so we have a standard battlefield set up for battling! It isn’t equipped for Dynamaxing or Gigantamaxing, but that isn’t a worry since we don’t have the means to do so in this area. Trainers are welcome to use the field for practice, and to see if any staff would like to battle with them. I’m usually up for a good battle unless I’m busy (or recovering from something), and it’s great fun to spectate during your breaks!
MIRROR LAKE - Named after the Giant’s Mirror, Mirror Lake hosts numerous Water Types that prefer the colder waters. We have a Lapras who lives there and she’s very friendly, though she’s never been captured and we don’t allow the public to ride on her. She picks and chooses on the staff who she’ll allow to ride on her back and if you try to force it, she throws you into the water. We have other trained ride Pokemon for water rides, and the shallows can be nice to dip your feet in during the hotter summer, though the water never gets above chilly temperatures.
SHIVERWOOD FOREST - Likely named during the colder winter, Shiverwood is the forest we’re built on the edge of. It’s technically still the Glimwood Tangle, but we have stronger wild Pokemon around, as well as some other species you won’t find south of Ballonlea. There are trail tours, but we generally advise not wandering into the dense forest, as it’s very easy to get lost. You’ll often be able to see the wild Sylveon and Umbreon packs, as well as some Deerling and Sawsbuck herds, lots of Impidimps and a few Morgrems and Grimmsnarls, and plenty of Zubats. If you’re lucky, you might spot a Trevenant!
MOUNTAIN TRAILS - We have several mountain trails to hike on if you don’t mind the chillier weather up there. Most of the caves have danger signs posted in front of them and we often have staff posted near them, but several caves are open and free to explore! We have a Gigalith who lives deep in the caves who comes out every once in a while and is a real sight to behold, and higher up the mountain for more experienced climbers, you may get to see a very friendly Froslass. Other than that you can expect to find Geodudes, Gravellers and Golems, more Zubats, Roggenrolas and Boldores, and most common Rock Types. If you’re very lucky in the winter, and if you’re patient and brave enough to climb up to see the Froslass, you might just see an Aurorus if you wait around long enough. She’s very elusive, but breathtaking to see. Just don’t get on the wrong side of any Abomasnow or Beartics you see up there- keep to the trails and don’t go without staff.
—————
You said events?
I did! We host a couple of events every season, raising awareness for our work and for Pokemon in need to the public. The events we host are all free and are open for everyone, and we always put out plenty of notice and signs so everyone knows!
SPRING
Shiverwood Trek - Every year, early in the spring, we put on the annual hike where everyone who shows up early in the morning joins us for a hike through the forest! We do Pokemonspotting throughout, and this is usually the time where you get to interact with a lot of wild Pokemon and see the sights that Shiverwood has to offer. This is also the only event where we go off the trails- since the foliage won’t have fully come in, it’s much easier to get through, so we always explore “new” (we explore before taking random people in for safety reasons) areas. Afterwards, there’s a lunch and then we offer the usual guided tours. I usually lead this one!
Wake-Up Call - A lot of Pokemon come out of hibernation in the spring, and after sleeping for so long, they’re quite hungry! Come on down and make up baskets of food grown here in the Greenhouses, and join us in going through the forest and setting baskets around for anyone who might need it. You’ll often get to see sleepy Pokemon stumbling around, and let me tell you, you haven’t lived till you’ve seen a sleepy Greedent fall asleep eating the basket it found.
SUMMER
Summer Barbecue Bash!! - Just what it says it is! It’s a massive barbecue party we hold from early afternoon to late into the night every summer. We team up with Kabu and other Fire Type experts to bring in Fire Types to help with the cooking, as well as putting on shows of them displaying their talents and powers. It’s a lot of fun, just remember to bring sunscreen!
Scavenger Hunt - This one’s more meant for the younger ones, but we host a big scavenger hunt in the easy forest trails and the easy mountain trails for people to complete! Everybody gets a prize for finishing, but first free to finish get a bigger prize just as a bit of incentive. This usually brings out the families, a lot like the barbecue bash, and is a lot of fun to set up and help out with. Staff get to be wonderfully cryptic and unhelpful (unless it’s with the little ones- we’re a bit more helpful there) and it’s good to get out into the sun for a bit. We hold this one a couple times throughout the summer.
FALL
Fall Forage - As fall comes in, a lot of local plant life starts to wither for the colder weather. Right at the beginning, we lead people around for foraging, and anything they find they can choose to donate to us or take home for free. There’s a lot of Pokemonspotting to be had, a lot of exploring, and at the end of the day we take some of what we’ve found and we make a big community pot of soup! That’s become a tradition for the forage over the years, and it’s probably my favourite part after spending the whole day gathering plants in the chilly weather.
Sawsbuck Sendoff - Every year in the fall, the Sawsbuck and Deerling herds that live in the area migrate towards the mountains for the winter. They come through the area in big herds, and this lasts usually 2 - 3 days. This started off as something unofficial, but the popularity of it led to us advertising it as a sendoff, where we all gather and watch the Sawsbuck and Deerling herds migrate. You can also help clearing their way with us if you want, it’s a volunteer operation and we repay you with food, but you basically just help us clear the way and set up food and water stations, plus you might see some early groups come through! Can’t go up to the herds for safety reasons, but watching them is quite beautiful, and very rewarding to see your hard work pay off when they eat the food you set out for them.
WINTER
Into the Unknown - Named a bit dramatically, because we definitely know where we’re going, but winter’s event is cave exploring! This is the only time of year we open up some of the more restricted caves, and we take people deep into the caves to explore. We check them all out in advance, of course, to ensure safety, but this is the one and only opportunity a year to get into some of these caves and explore deeper into the mountain. This is another one I tend to lead, and it’s great fun, but it’s also got a lot of hands on deck and on standby just in case. A lot of prep goes into this one and honestly, it’s probably my favourite event to host! There’s hidden waterfalls, glittering caves, and this is the only way you’ll see some Pokemon like Noibats, Noiverns, and some elusive Ghost and Dark Types.
Winter Harvest - We do this one a few times throughout the winter. Winter Harvest is when we take what we’ve been growing in the Greenhouses and the public can come help us make food packages that we donate to Pokemon shelters, and to families in need. This one usually has a big turnout and it’s a great environment all around; just people helping each other and drinking hot chocolate. I participate every year, and help with the deliveries along with staff and volunteers.
Besides those, we also host regular adoption events. People can come through anytime to see if they’d like to adopt any of the Pokemon we hold here, though we do have fairs on a regular basis to promote the facility’s adoption services.
You can also find some courses here- we offer them to anybody looking to learn, no age limit (just a minimum; 16), but they can be very helpful when applying for certain lines of work. I also offer referrals and letters of recommendation as a professor, and the staff are also qualified to do the same as medical experts and behaviouralists.

FAQ
Q: What kind of questions can I ask?
A: Anything and everything! I’ll always answer to the best of my ability, be it behaviour, medical, or just you wanting my thoughts on a certain species or concept. I’ll always be sure to be clear when my answers are uncertain, theoretical, or if I just don’t know. But anything you want to ask, ask away!
Q: Can I come to you for medical advice?
A: Within the Pokemon world? Absolutely! If you’re looking for real-life medical advice from the author of this blog, who is an arts student who works part-time retail, you are not going to find anything helpful!
Q: Why is my question taking a while to get answered?
A: I (both myself and Arthur) get very busy! I check this blog whenever I can, but I don’t always answer right away because my answers require time for me to sit down and think it out. I answer every ask I receive (unless it’s really weirdly personal or if there’s clearly something really bad about it- then it’ll be deleted) and I do so as quickly as I can, but I pride myself on quality answers, so it might take me a bit!
Q: Do you hand out starter Pokemon?
A: Not in the way you think! We do adopt Pokemon out, but we’re not like, say Professor Oak. Adopting a Pokemon out here, even to a child, involves a screening process of the adopter (anyone over 18 and if younger than 18, their legal guardian(s)), and a lot of paperwork. We have to make sure everything is going to work out, after all! But we don’t just hand a new trainer a Pokemon, no.
Q: Can I leave my Pokemon there for a short while?
A: Absolutely! We don’t have a designated daycare area, but we will ensure your Pokemon gets the best care and stays in the area best suited to them. Feel free to leave them with us, but we do ask that it not be long, so try to come get them within 10 days unless you give us notice it will be a longer period. While you’re away, your Pokemon will be allowed to roam (with supervision) in any area that best suits it, and I’ll personally assure you that staff are more than happy to keep our Pokemon guests company, haha :)

Finally tumblr is cooperating with the wifi
So hear me out, or well read; Dream Smp: Pokemon/Pixelmon AU
ima do some post starting with the groups/factions if you have any ideas don't be shy to spam them it’s not like i check tumblr notifs lmao
Starting with:
Dream Team
Dream- Normal and Dark, i was thinking normal because well dream is kinda basic, just a blob, and for dark well.... smp watchers should know why. And for his team i went with:
Ditto (for the smile aesthetic)
Ursaring (you all can guess why yourselves)
Nidoking (I had a Nidoking and he was incredibly strong and basically a god against anyone i fought so i think it’s fitting, also king)
Mightyena (The little lore  to finding this one was he found it as a Poochyena, and he hasn’t had the heart to take it off his main team)
Dragonite (I wanted to give him a pseudo legendary and decided on this, to balance out the aggressiveness of his team, also because you know, he started the smp, gen 1)
And for the sixth spot i decided to leave it up to you all i didn't have the quarter of a brain cell to choose one
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sapnap- Fire and Fighting, fire because this is Sapnap we’re talking about. And  fighting because this is Sapnap we’re talking about.
For his team i decided on:
 just a lvl 100 salandit
Salazzle (He didn't know it was female so here we are)
Talonflame (He heard that Dream got a Dragonite and he wanted his own flying type too)
Lucario [Mega Evo] (George gave him the stone for it, he had it for a while ever since it hatched actually)
Stuffl (”Just wait until someone tries to attack me and i send this fella out and they yeet em’ into the stratosphere”)
Toxapex (”To balance out all the fire we have this”, it also refuses to leave Sapnap’s side)
he usually fills his last spot with anything he thinks is cool looking, but he releases them after a bit cus their probably are weak or because they don’t strike as much interest to him as he expected.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
George- Electric and Dragon. My reasoning will stay hidden. He’s a lab worker because he “wants to do something valuable with his time” so he just has pokemon to help him and such.
Dedenne (Ok so before you say that using a dedenne as a electric source is animal abuse, she does it to herself, she sleeps on the wires.She also helps power machines that need more voltage, and don't worry she can handle this)
Luxray (I realized each Dt member has a ride pokemon and I’ve decided Luxray is gonna be George’s)
2 10% Zygardes (Watch dogs so people stop trying to rob his lab, it’s mostly Dream or Skeppy but still)
Hoopa (Because George studies pokemon from different regions Hoopa bargains with George, as long as he helps find the pokemon he will eventually give Hoopa their bottle back. Stupidly enough this Au has lore that shifts away from the actual smp because it’s pokemon)
Venusaur (He got it as a starting pokemon, and even though George doesn’t usually fight pokemon his Bulbasaur was always there to fight any threat to George)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I know he technically isn’t in the Dream Team but i just wanted to do Callahan
Callahan- Normal and Ice, basic but i had something planned out with these two types, also you can guess why i give him each of these pokemon, im curious to see what you all come up with
Spectrier
Sandslash
Furret
Stoutland
Stantler
Noctowl
Top 3 Pokemon Types
I thought it would be fun to do this. Several months back I saw people listing their favorite pokemon of a given type, and I didn’t participate at the time. So, here are my top 3 types. Starting with my most beloved:
Tumblr media
Bug
Many folks have mocked me for having Bug as my favorite Type, and that’s ok. I’ve always been a fan of the underdog, of the underappreciated.
And the truth is, I have loved bugs in real life since I was a teeny tiny lassie. I studied them a ton, wrote about them, kept all kinds as pets, and my mother was even understanding enough to once allow me to capture mosquito larvae (mosquito pupae are called tumblers, incidentally!) and feed them and let them develop into mosquitoes. (We, uhh, we kept a stocking/netting over the bug bottle top so they could not escape and released the adults outdoors away from the house, haha.) I also would go out in the early hours of the morning with my little brother with a giant bucket, and pluck all the slugs and snails from the garden and go dump them in a field, so that my parents wouldn’t kill them.
Also, err, my brother and I had a bug club. It had a newsletter. Look, we liked bugs OK XD I’m getting off track OK BACK TO POKEMON
Anyone who is a fairly big fan of pokemon is probably aware of how Pokemon’s creator, Satoshi Tajiri, was first inspired to create pokemon. Yep, he was a major bug collector as a child, and it was this passionate hobby of his youth blended with his love of video games and inspiration drawn from toy capsule machines that led to the idea of collecting capsule monsters in a Gameboy game.  As such, I feel like it’s actually very fitting to give Bug type its dues in these games. They are the spirit of pokemon in its purest form, in a way.  Satoshi Tajiri wanted folks to connect with nature and not forget about it completely in the modern world, and for me, humble bugs have often been that connection.
Another reason I feel bugs are a very pure form of the pokemon spirit is because pokemon has always been about not simply training the ‘strongest’ species. It’s about the idea that everyone, every person and pokemon, has potential if they put effort into finding and developing that potential. Bugs are often taken for granted, underestimated, and even feared or hated. But they deserve love and deserve a chance like everyone else, and if you care for them, they just might surprise you with what they can accomplish.
Besides, I like a challenge. :P
Tumblr media
Flying
This is another type I love in large part because of how much I adore the real-life counterparts. Birds have been really important to me for a while. I actually spent a huge chunk of my youth deeply invested in a birdkeeping and bird breeding hobby. I owned several large flights, an aviary, and eventually built a bird room in the garage with a bunch of breeding cages. I helped teach classes about birds at a community center, I sold offspring to petshops, I was an avid participant in birdkeeping mailing lists, I volunteered at wildlife rehabs and took in a number of rescue birds. I was pretty serious about things and at the time, and wanted to pursue a career in animal husbandry or veterinary medicine.
I also was a passionate bird-watcher. These days I don’t own birds, and I rarely go bird-watching (seems I’m too busy usually, alas), but my love of all things avian has never really left me. There’s a feeling of joy and peace that comes from just being around birds; it’s hard to describe. I’ve also always had a strong fondness for being in high places, and … well, to use a popular meme, I guess you could say birds (& bugs) are my “spirit animal.”
In terms of the Typing in the actual game, Flying pokemon tend to be very versatile and practical. Offensively it’s a great type to use, hitting most things for neutral damage, with no immunities and a couple important super-effective uses, as grass and fighting are really common in-game. Defensively, it’s a pretty good bet too, with a really nice immunity and relatively few weaknesses. But, again– its primary strength as a Type is its versatility. Like the Normal type, it just tends to be a good bet for hitting most things for solid neutral damage, and Flying pokemon are flexible and useful in a variety of situations. I really enjoy the all-purposeness of that, and they tend to be my stalwart, reliable teammembers, as well as my dedicated HM flyers, yes. (well! Until Sun/Moon.) Time and time again, when I do in-game runs, I tend to get very close to my Flying types on the team, sometimes even moreso than my Starters. Despite not being rock types, they tend to be my rock.
Tumblr media
Dragon
Now, I know what you’re thinking. After all my praise for the humble bugs and the common yet versatile birds, I’m going to go and pick ‘dragon’ as my third favorite type. To you, I say, you’re not my dad, I can do what I want.
But seriously, I just really like dragons. Always had a love for mythical creatures. They’re just COOL! Honestly, that’s my only reason behind this one. It’s not even that dragon types tend to be super powerful, though that’s cool too. It’s just that they’re neat. Rarrrarr dragons rarr.
I mean, while other little girls my age were dressing as fairy princesses and such on Halloween, I was dressing up as a dragon. ‘Cos dragons.
I’m sorry-- I wish I had more to say here, but my love of dragons is just that simple, I suppose. Honestly it’s funny because I don’t even LIKE a lot of the more popular dragons in pokemon– I don’t care for the designs. (Dragonite looks too goofy to me, Altaria is poopy,  Salamence looks dumb …) But a ton are really bad-ass! They may be rarely on my actual team, and there may not be a lot of pokemon even for this type, but I still love them enough to be my third favorite type.
My 3 least favorite Types are Fairy (most are very pink and girly, and I’m a gal who just tends to not like excessively pink, frilly things. just not my cuppa), Fighting (I don’t like a lot of excessively-humanoid pokemon designs) and Steel, I guess (honestly it’s a little OP, not my playstyle, and I just don’t happen to like most of the designs for steel types).
That’s it for now!
I went to see the "Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution" premiere at Anime-Expo!
Hey, everyone! I just returned from Anime-Expo where I was lucky enough to've seen the world premiere of the 22nd Pokemon film, Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution. Wanted to share some of my experiences on it!
I'll start with some information about the event, before going into details on the movie itself. First of all, this was (as far as I understand) the very first time any Japanese-language with English-subtitled Pokemon animation has been officially (and legally) released in North America (and possibly outside of Japan in general?) so I wanted to make sure I attended this pretty momentous occasion. The event itself was handled very well by the staff and there was a great bilingual host who oversaw the whole thing and really hyped up the audience. After the film screening was finished, the three related guests of honor, Kunihiko Yuyama (co-animation director), Motonori Sakakibara, (co-animation director) and Rica Matsumoto (Japanese voice actress of Satoshi/Ash) were brought to the stage to answer a few prepared questions and audience questions. Afterward, Rica Matsumoto performed "Mezase Pokemon Master" live for the audience, which was an absolute treat. Finally, after the reveal of Armored Mewtwo's upcoming appearance in Pokemon Go, we took a "family photo" with a mascot Pikachu making an appearance! The whole thing was a total blast.
Some key points involving the Q&A session:
Rica Matsumoto was in particular very excited to visit LA, especially because she had worked on the Japanese dub for Beverly Hills 90210 and got to visit the real location after wanting to for so long! In addition, she was so taken aback by the audience's enthusiasm for "Satoshi", knowing how they were far more familiar with "Ash", but felt a strong connection to them through the character and Pokemon in general. The two animation co-directors Mr. Sakakibara and Mr. Yuyama shared similar comments, being blown away by the audience's emotional reaction. The screening also gave them major nostalgic flashbacks to first working on the original over 20 years ago. They were also so grateful.
I was fortunate enough to be chosen to ask the first of the three audience questions. First, I thanked them for giving us the opportunity to see this film in its original language with subtitles, as this was a tremendous honor to begin with. After mentioning that the American fandom was very appreciative for the English dubbed version of the TV series and movies, I asked if they would be able to give us any other future opportunities to see ANY other Japanese-language Pokemon animation down the line. Mr. Yuyama said they have plans, with Rica Matsumoto following with "Count on it!!" Nothing further than that, but definitely a good sign!
The next question from the audience asked about a trailer featuring footage involving what appeared to be an older version of Misty, why it was cut and what its involvement was to the movie's early stages of development. Mr. Yuyama simply responded with (paraphrasing, here) "While that was meant to show the image of an adult, the character in question was not actually an older version of Misty. The haircut is very similar though, I can see why you would make that mistake!". Rica Matsumoto adds (again, paraphrasing) "It just goes show that there's so many pretty girls in Pokemon, it's easy to mistake them for each other sometimes!" (Personal note: obviously this is sort of 'dodging the actual question', but it's likely they either weren't allowed to go into detail as to what that early trailer was all about, or possibly forgot about the details since it had been so long ago.)
The final audience question asked about what led to the decision to re-do the original film with CG animation. Mr. Sakakibara mentioned that they had wanted to do a CG Animated Pokemon film for a long time, but thanks to the collaboration with the 3D animation studio they worked with (I've forgotten the studio's name unfortunately, sorry!) they were able to finally make it happen. They chose Mewtwo Strikes Back as the experiment piece in order to try pushing the original character animation even further with the expressiveness and emotion.
I'm sure fans of her know this already, but Rica Matsumoto is an absolute ROCK STAR on stage. She loved teasing the audience and getting them amped up, commanding us to get louder and louder! "When I say 'Pokemon', you say 'Getto da ze!'" was a real highlight. To her, "Mezase Pokemon Master" is THE defining Pokemon song.
Next, I'll talk about the film itself. To those of you who don't want to be potentially spoiled on some of the differences between this and the original movie, skip this part!
The subtitle track for the film used all of the official English names of all characters, including the humans, Pokemon creatures, attack names, locations and even the nicknames of the guest characters' starters ("Bruteroot" and "Shellshocker"). For the most part, the translation was very close to the original Japanese dialogue, but there were definitely a few liberties taken at times. Team Rocket's motto was changed to reflect the English adaptation ("Prepare for trouble and make it double" etc.) along with referring to Ash/Satoshi as "Twerp" (instead of "JARI-BOY!"). There was also a very obvious 'joke' on the translator's part involving a new scene where Brock/Takeshi hits on Neesha/Sweet, proclaiming something about his "jelly donuts" (ending in the ol' Misty-dragging-him-away-by-the-ear gag). As this scene had completely new dialogue, I wouldn't be able to cross-check whatever the 100% accurate translation would be off-hand. A couple other liberties taken (in a way), were that certain lines throughout the movie were word-for-word 'translated' as lines from the original English dub of Pokemon: The First Movie. Thankfully these were rare, but one that definitely sticks out was the "I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant. It is what you DO with the gift of life, that determines who you are." at the film's climax. Lastly, Mewtwo's words asking "Was I created by God?" and the scientists' response, were adapted in the subtitles as "Was I created by nature?". (Personal note: Likely this was to avoid flat-out religious references.)
The film begins with Dr. Fuji and his crew retrieving the Mew fossil from the ancient ruins. The "Birth of Mewtwo" sequence involving Amber/Ai is NOT included in this version of the story; the following scene leads directly into Mewtwo's awakening in the tube, to which the movie plays out as you remember it.
Dr. Fuji's laboratory is tremendously redesigned, but the same events transpire.
Mewtwo's armor is, as you've noticed, also fully re-designed. We see many re-directed (in terms of cinematography) scenes from the sequence of his servitude to Giovanni/Sakaki, including Gary/Shigeru's from-behind cameo. The main element of difference in the armor's usage is, just before blowing up the Team Rocket base upon defying Giovanni, it transforms into a binding 'prison' sort of state, to keep Mewtwo confined if he ever fought back...of course, he breaks it easily and flies off, just as before.
The first sequence where we see Ash, Misty/Kasumi and Brock starts a little earlier than in the original, showing Ash more excited and offering to help set up the table for lunch. It then cuts to slightly later where he's tired and slumped over the table. The Pirate Trainer "Raymond" appears again (still with all his glorious Engrish), now with a slight redesign involving bigger hair and the theme song battle sequence plays out. Worth noting, during the 3-on-1 against Pikachu, his Golem is replaced with a Drowzee. (Personal note: Likely to circumvent the "Thunderbolt should be ineffective against a Ground-type" argument.) We also see glimpses of Mewtwo and the mind-controlled Nurse Joy viewing the battle. Just before Dragonite shows up to deliver the invitation, we also see a bit of the gang's other Pokemon used in the movie: Vulpix, Psyduck, Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Charizard, eating Pokemon food.
LOTS more trainers in the dock scene. The pier master Miranda/Voyager actually speaks of Wingulls showing signs of how bad the storm is, warning everyone again. We see a few more trainers attempt to travel to New Island, including one who tries Surfing on their Kingler and another who is carried by their Scyther...neither of them make it, along with whoever tried flying with their Fearow like in the original. RIP.
The Vikings-the-mostly-live-in-Minnesota are replaced with an equally-funny costume theme of the Team Rocket trio as some tourist-trap sailors utilizing a Lapras-shaped ferry service. Brock comments on how conveniently they showed up and they all get on. We then get a very Disneyland 3D Attraction-style sequence of the two trios riding through the storm before it crashes and Misty sends out Staryu to try and save the day. Another extended sequence of Ash, Misty and Brock clinging for dear life to Staryu plays out, including a really gorgeous orchestral arrangement of...the Sun & Moon Wild Pokemon Battle theme, of all things!
Ash and the others meet the other guest trainers. This is where the short added scene of Brock hitting on Neesha is added.
In general, while the grand majority of the things that happen in each scene are the same as they are in the original, a lot of the animation is expanded upon and really pushed in terms of expressiveness. Often this makes them longer than how they were before, but it's definitely paced out properly to fit with the adjustments they made.
The battle arena sequence plays out and all 3 of the battles between Venusaur, Blastoise and Charizard Vs. their super-clones are extended with new fight choreography and additional attack exchanges, including with later-added techniques like Energy Ball and Leaf Storm. This scene also features a completely new background music track from the one used in the original film (later used quite a bit in the anime).
The sequence of Mewtwo capturing all of the humans' Pokemon plays out, also with new background music as opposed to the original. A few new shots of the trainers trying to guard their Pokemon from being captured are added.
After the super-clones emerge, Mew appears to save Ash from being splattered against a wall, the Pokemon and their clones brutally beat each other, now with new sweeping camera angles and new music instead of the original.
When Ash rejoins Misty and Brock after climbing down from the castle, a few bits of dialogue are slightly played around with, but leads to the same untimely demise. Some new DBZ-esque glow effects are applied to when Ash is struck by the two psychic blasts and his turned-to-stone state is a bit more like crystal. Pikachu trying to Thundershock Ash back to life lingers a bit more, to show the desperation in Pikachu's attempt. When the other Pokemon begin shedding their tears, their actual sounds aren't heard and the scene is silent minus the background music.
The memory erasure happens yet again, sending everyone back to the docks. From just after Ash sees Mew flying in the sky, commenting on it, up through Team Rocket's sign-off on the now-abandoned New Island, the orchestral arrangement of the Pokemon Red & Blue Credits theme plays. For the movie credits, we're treated to a new remix of "Kaze to Isshi Ni" (featuring Shokotan) along with some 2D paintings of Ash, Misty and Brock traveling. One shows a flock of Wingull near the dock area! At the end, we see Mewtwo and the clones flying off to what appears to be Mount Quena from the "Mewtwo Returns" TV special.
Finally, as is always the case, a very short teaser of the "Pokemon 2020" film, showing a 2D-animated Pikachu in the style of the Sun & Moon series.
There might have been some things I missed, but that's everything I could recount! If you have any other questions, I'll try and answer them as best as I can. To anyone else who was there for the screening, feel free to add anything else you like! Overall, highly recommend folks who enjoyed the original Mewtwo Strikes Back movie to go see this when the English version comes out!
Now that you got the Gym Leaders and such out of the way, how about one for the Elite Four members (Champions will not count since only, like, 3 of them have a specialized type)? Since only 8 out of the 14 types used have more than one E4 member, this means that Koga, Aaron, Bertha, Siebold, Olivia, and Kahili literally have no competition. :P (Also, I do know that you're not really fond of either Fire-type Elite Four, so for favorite, I guess you gotta choose the one you dislike less)
LETS GO. For types with only one elite four representative, I’m gonna talk about why I like or dislike them.
Normal Type- There isn’t one. MOVING ON.
Fighting Type- Least Favorite: Bruno is terrifying. In Generations he’s just muscles on muscles on muscles. And I saw an image of him from Lets Go games and good lord that man has demon eyes.
Fighting Type- Most Favorite: Marshal. Sure he’s the only other one but I do genuinely like his design. Even if his eyebrows are out there. He wears a mouth guard to protect his teeth! Man’s smart.
Flying Type- I like Kahili. Her design is cute. And I absolutely love how the flying type fits her as a golfer! I just wish she hadn’t come out of nowhere.
Poison Type- It’s just Koga and I’ve talked about him already. :P
Ground Type- Bertha’s the only one. I really love this sweet looking old lady. She’s totally Agatha’s twin sister or cousin and no one can convince me otherwise.
Rock Type- There’s only Olivia. While I love the idea of a strong rock type leader woman, I hate the character on a design and character basis. Sexy, barely anything wearing single woman. Not to mention all the robotic stufful in her house being popular among single women. Because IF A HOT CHICK IS SINGLE WE MUST MAKE SURE ITS KNOWN. Women are distinctly tied to a man in their life, don’t you know. And stop pointing her ass at us in the game, Game Freak. Its freaking gross. Especially considering its not just her butt pointed at us and they’ve arched her back in such a way for it to bring to mind.. things. Doesn’t help that she’s another female character who’s wearing ‘pants’ that are about as useful as boxer style panties and might as well just be that.
Bug Type- Shout out to Aaron for being unexpected on my part. Of all the types I could see in the elite four, Bug Type is not one of them. Precious bug boy.
Ghost Type- Least Favorite: (ITS ACEROLA. SHE COUNTS!) Okay fine I’ll pic someone else. We’ll go with Shauntal. For whatever reason her color scheme just does not work for me. Its too bland. I feel like a long dress would have looked nicer on her. Also that freaking.. whatever around her neck. Its supposed to look like a cat but.. why? Why though? Why not just give her a weird ass poofy neck thing with a clasp that looks like a duskull’s head or something since she’s a ghost type trainer? I mean I know the answer. They want her to be totes kawaii ghosty spooky girl. That’s why she’s got a short girlish dress instead of a cool long dress. Her being a writer’s cute though.
Ghost Type- Most Favorite: Sassy attitude grandma Agatha is best ghost trainer. I want to see her in a game again. That ISN’T a remake. YOU BETTER NOT HAVE KILLED HER OFF, GAMEFREAK. If freaking Oak gets to keep kicking, his rival better freaking get to as well. She’s in pokemon masters and that’s cool. But she looks like they have her a youth lift so she’s not TOO OLD LOOKING.
Steel Type- Least Favorite: Twig Legs Molayne. I was happy so see him in there though.
Steel Type- Most Favorite: Wikstrom is a knight. That is funny. His face reminds me of Steiner from Final Fantasy IX.
Fire Type- Least Favorite: Ronald McDonald I mean Flint. Yeah. Flint McDonald. Because I hate clowns.
Fire Type- Most Favorite: I might dislike Malva for being a member of the evil team and not getting removed from her position but I do like her design much more than basically anyone else in Team Flare.
Water Type- I love Siebold. He looks like a grumpy chef and I can picture him as the Gordon Ramsay of the pokemon world. He’s also cute.
Grass Type- There isn’t one~
Electric Type- There isn’t one here either~
Psychic Type- Least Favorite: CAITLIN. Sleepy spoiled little rich girl who went from having her butler do all her battles for her because she couldn’t control her emotions and psychic powers and then somehow becomes an ELITE FOUR MEMBER? Shit I’d accept her as a gym leader first but not basically one of the five most powerful trainers in a region. At least she seems like less of a sleepy rich bitch in Black2White2. Wouldn’t be surprised if she’s a sleepy brat in Masters again though. Also I want to cut her hair because god damn is that unnatural.
Psychic Type- Most Favorite: Lucian and Will are basically the same person in my eyes and neither of them are Caitlin, so props to both of them.
Ice Type- Least Favorite: Lorelei. Because she’s an ice queen in personality and the booby character in design. Also in Fire Red/Leaf Green she collects pokedolls because we gotta make sure to have something kawaii girly for our titty character. But it has to be a SECRET because people knowing her dark dark secret of collecting cute dolls as a smart adult calculated ice queen would probably leave her embarrassed and venerable and ugh sometimes I hate Japanese characters. ALSO, SHE GOT TIDDIES MAKE SURE YOU NOTICE HOW MASSIVE THEM THINGS ARE. Anime sure won’t let you forget it. Also put on some clothes suited to the cold. Jeez.
Ice Type- Most Favorite: I love Glacia’s design. Especially since it doesn’t look like she’s be too cold in an ice filled battle room. She has that older dignified woman thing going for her. My brain wants to give her more of a southern belle accent.
Dragon Type- Least Favorite: I’m putting Lance here only because I have to have a least favorite. I love Lance.
Dragon Type- Most Favorite: Drake looks like a crazy old man who spent years at sea hunting down that giant Dragonite Bill saw in the anime as his white whale. Hot Grandpa Energy. This is a man you respect. Those eyes are scary intimidating.
Dark Type- Least Favorite: Karen, because I have to pick someone as least favorite. I love Karen.
Dark Type- Most Favorite: Sidney is cute and has a very friendly personality that I like a lot. He totally feels like the type who’d see a little girl crying because she didn’t win the cute prize at a carnival and would win it for her. Also, unlike Grimsley, SIDNEY KNOWS HOW TO WEAR SOCKS WITH DRESS SHOES. God damnit, Grimsley what is wrong with you.
Fairy Type- There isn’t one. I hope next gen has one!
