Most of Lan Wangji’s presents are useful ones, but sometimes—more and more often of late, since the delight of seeing Wei Ying smile is beyond price, always—Lan Wangji buys more costly things, like jewellery and hair ornaments and soft silk slippers to keep his husband’s feet off the jingshi’s cold floor, even when Wei Ying insists that stockings serve the same purpose well enough and then claims that "my feet weren’t even cold anyway, Lan Zhan."
(All nonsense, of course. Lan Wangji shares a bed with him, and knows perfectly well that his feet get chilly at night sometimes.)
Four months to the day after his wedding, Lan Wangji returns from a night-hunt in Changzhou with his sword at his waist, his qin on his back, and his arms full of gifts for his new husband.
