I was just watching the last episode of Absolute BL 2

It really is such a genius show.

I mean in the last season we saw the Japanese bl 'last episode run to confess'

This time we got 'a misunderstanding due an ex', 'going abroad' and finally the 'rain'.

I was so hoping for a 'airport confession after driving in rain'

I thought I had to settle for the 'last episode run to confess' again

But of course this show has to do every trope earth. I got my 'airport confession'

It would not be Absolute BL if you are not literally tripping on an a trope every 2 minutes.

There are the obvious tropes that the episodes are named after but there are also the subtle romance tropes that we take for granted and dismiss.

This show just makes you look at all machinery behind the scenes by treating the narrative like a semi transparent film.

Also this gave me two of my most favorite lines in all of history

Returning to my campus life, where B's will L.

Even in this world set on being a BL, a B like me won't L.

I just love this show so much!

It is a true work of genius, I don't care what others say, parody is the true soul of narrative. It has to understand EVERYTHING so perfectly in order to call it out.

Zettai BL posted a photo from the set of the opening credits. Y’all, it is something else.

That’s Sekoguchi Ryo on the far left in the outfit with the yellow/orange fringe. And quite the ensemble it is!

It always seemed pretty danged likely he’d be in the credits number, but it’s nice to have that confirmed. If things go the way they did in past seasons, this also means we’re going to see him dancing and singing. And doing at least one of those absurdly flirty interstitial bits.

I still haven’t heard any news about international distribution/streaming, but hope springs eternal.

Leo & Leon: "They understand each other very well I think. Even tho Leon always fights with Fiat, he understands that Fiat is very important to his brother and supports that, especially when anyone tries to mess with Fiat. Leon knows Leo very well and understands what he’s thinking when he’s stressed or upset. Similarly Leo understands what drives Leon and even tho he’s usually very focused on Fiat, is also a good brother to Leon. They can talk about anything with each other and they have each others back. I think Leon is the only person that could pull Leo’s attention away from Fiat, which says a lot."

Mob & Ayato: "They’re living in a slapstick parody world, but it’s still clear how much they love and care about each other. Mob completely freaks out about Ayato “succumbing” to to the BL world, and sure, it’s coming out of internalized homophobia, but it’s rooted in his love for his little brother."

Love By Chance: it's actually pathetic how often my brain goes "oh- so we rewatch now? how about- now? ....and now?" when will enough be enough? it's the question for the ages (just AePete parts; sometimes I watch TinCan when the mood strikes).

UWMA: still doing a weekly(ish) rewatch with @flukenatouch, but I've watched random eps innumerable times & the whole shebang 2-3 times. like LBC, it's a sickness & I'm not seeking treatment.

Light On Me: thanks to a bunch of y'all running through the blog & rbing my old LOM posts (you know who you are), I've got LOM on the brain & I'm craving a rewatch- as if I don't have enough on the entertainment plate already, you menaces.

Love By Chance 2: I just finished a second rewatch because the first time around wasn't stellar, but I wanted to give it a second chance (heh)- aaaand no dice. I love Tin and Can's dynamic and there was so much potential there, but Plan's stiff acting (maybe even outright discomfort) anytime physical affection was required kept breaking my immersion. le sigh.

Absolute BL: anytime I want to scream laugh 'till I'm gasping, this is where I go.

Never Let Me Go React and Recap Party

Aloha. First post from an avid lurker of #AbsoluteBL. Those seeking more depth and context for this series might want to check out the "Soon Vijarn" channel on You Tube. Directors Jojo Tichakorn and BFF Aof Nopparnach and their BL friend group: actor/writer Frame Theepisit ("Gay OK Bangkok" which Jojo wrote and Aof directed), BL actor coach/manager Jack Jao , Noom Marut (who usually does their Eng Subs within a week), etc. meet at music composer Nui Aran's house to react live to Jojo's NLMG, then recap and analyze. They also critiqued and rated the GMMTV BL trailer lineup.

Heya, I’ve lurked on your blog for a while (not signed in lol). Love everything and I adore the insights into linguistics, I have a lot of linguistic nerd friends who I fear are becoming Tired of me asking questions and this is a great resource so I can ask deeper questions.

Anywho, I’m trying to compile a list of scenes or lines where the characters themselves speak on BL, like the international impact, the effects on LGBTQ+, anything. I know Cutie Pie did it in that boardroom scene where Lian says something relating to BL, in Step by Step someone says BL couples profit off the identity of LGBT+.

All this to say, I’m wondering if you have any favorite lines or scenes that get meta and talk about BL!

Gottcha, here are my favorites from last year:

I call this BL getting meta or self referential. I tracked it as a trend in 2021 my #1 pick & 2022 my # 2 pick, so that's the place I would mention those shows that do this. Also there are some more screen caps of my favorites.

Most of my personal favorites would come from Absolute BL 1 & 2. There is a reason I named my blog after that show.

We had full on meta shows too, wither that had a BL within a BL or BL actors or were all about BL like Call it What You Want, Lovely Writer, etc...

I will also call your attention to GMMTV's 55:15 Never Too Late, it has a gay sub-plot that also deals with BL directly, you might find it interesting.

I'm not really tracking it this year except when someone drops one in a series I like and I screen cap. It's become so common now!

Volume 1 in German. The first print run comes with some stickers. A bit on the more pricey side at 8€ (incl. tax) with just 125p. I guess, it is a bit of a niche audience within a niche genre within a nice media category. The typographic elements (the title, volume numbers, author name, publisher logo, etc) on both front and back cover have a gloss effect you'd see when held against light.

The translation is internally very sound on its own. There is only two things I picked up when I was comparing it to my memory after reading it. One was that it removes the usage of the term "flag" that I remember as rather prevalently repeated in JP edition doesn't seem to show up here at all (there is only one mention of a "trigger"). The older JP chapers on pixiv have mostly vanished into the void tho, so can't compare anymore. Maybe it'll show up yet or it keeps using "trigger")

The second involves one of my favorite punchlines from early on:

And so the trap was already sprung. As soon as they get home, they'll come at each other like wild animals, because they won't even make it to the bedroom. He had no chance.

ダシにされる as defined by Weblio's dictionary means "to be used for the profit of others". (It comes from the ingredient dashi in cooking. It's a sort of Japanese fond, and always just there to support the main flavor of the dish rather than standing in the spotlight itself.) That's the main punchline of this chapter, that Mob-kun got used. Clearly he doesn't like it, but as other instances will prove he's still going to be willing to choose this, because being that Mob-kun used by the narrative for somebody else's romance is still better than falling into one yourself.

The scanlation nails that in its translation. However, it makes itself entirely clunky with how it chooses to phrase the second line. That one is a good showcase of how JP can and will pack even entire phrases, expressions and factual info dumps, actual quotations or kinda quotation looking thinking into something isolated on its own and then grammatically treat the whole thing the same as a simple noun. These constructions are often quite a challenge to unwind in Western languages. (Break it up into multiple sentences? Make side clauses at the risk of convoluted long sentences with commas? Actually use quotation marks?) The scanlation version in that sense doesn't make particularly any sense at all grammatically. It also completely ignores the parody style of censoring one letter of the icky word. If kept, this should have been something like "s*x", but this admittedly just looks weird typographically in manga font.

The German version opts out for language cohesion by breaking it up into separate sentences. It's also using known idiomatic expressions as a replacement of the pseudo-censoring and enhances the cynic commentary vibe with some more such expressions and mood markers. - That bit is quite great, and reading it on its own entirely fits the plot and joke just fine.

But it still entirely removes the ダシにされた, the bit that Mob-kun was being used as a mere support ingredient, and with it vanishes that early deadpan sardonicism that he knows it. (Before he later doubles down and starts to systematically use and explain to the reader how playing along to avoid trouble.)

It's nothing that really gets so much lost on the whole, because it shows up again, but that just happened to be one of my favorite lines.

Me, a few minutes later.

When you make the mistake and browse a few pages before that punchline accidentally and see something more:

Japanese:

People will think of us as strange...! Everyone's indifferent to their surroundings. Nobody notices anything, and nobody cares. I do. I'm totally bothered by your groping play.

Scanlation:

German:

People will notice something [if you go on] Never mind them, as if anyone's interested. Just relax, nobody's noticing anything. But I do. [Naughty] Plays like these are quite conspicuous.

I mean, nothing to note, if you don't actually compare it next to each other. It's internally very sound and if you didn't know better it's perfectly fine. But the German version kinda does leave stuff out again, does it?

full-blown Hatano obsession achieved

I know, I have a problem. I've never been freaked out enough about a show before to watch an entire (short) season without subtitles. I'm over here trying to look up words. It's ridiculous. But I did watch the entirety of Zettai BL 2024 despite the lack of subtitles and I took some Sekoguchi Ryo screenshots. Of course I did, how could I not?

A couple of caveats in case these might create certain expectations:

As you'll know if you saw the first two seasons, Mob sometimes imagines some pretty vivid scenarios as he strategizes about how to avoid traps.

[Spoiler warning] Mob and Hatano end up costarring in a BL drama. If you pay attention, it should be pretty obvious from these images when they're working/in character versus being themselves.

Wish me luck as I try to stop obsessing, or at least decrease this obsession to manageable levels. While we're wishing, please send all of your strongest vibes into the universe to ask for some kind of international streaming and/or fansubs on this thing. That would definitely help me to calm the fuck down.
