Gods but the way people think Arthur was stupid, trusting Agrvaine so much, first, Agravaine was a manipulative bastard, who came just after Uther died, a time when Arthur sorely needed parental support, seeing as his Father died and in a way, his whole family was gone. Mother, already dead, father, his king, dead, his sister betrayed him, forgive him for thinking, someone who was his last link to his mother, who was manipulating him on daily basis into thinking that he's the only one who had good intentions and cared for him. At a time, when he was most vulnerable. Forgive him for thinking that person won't betray him. Forgive him for thinking he had little of his family left. Forgivr him for thinking, even after all that has happened he was still loved by someone of his family.
Gods but I hate agravaine more than Uther, more than Morgana, more than any other villain. The way he manipulated Arthur, Gods, that's legit breaking the whole man, I wonder how Arthur managed to trust people after such deepest betrayal. Nobody talks about it,
But to think even after all of this, he still accepted Merlin and loved him so much!

a long rant/idea/rambling of how i want bbc merlin plot to go
Season 1
Tumblr media
General: stays the same (light-hearted season) but merlin starts to question gaius and kilgharrah, empathizes with morgana. Elyan is introduced somewhere between episodes. Gwen father didn’t die. Mordred ISN’T introduced yet. Morgana is gaslighted by merlin + gaius (not forever i swear guys)
Finale: merlin vs nimueh (epic battle this time), merlin is almost close to loosing but gaius helps him, however nimueh survives
Season 2
Tumblr media
General: introduction of mordred on the second ep (merlin hates him), ep 1 is abt balinor (mentor figure for merlin + should meet with hunnith), arthur finds out abt ygraine (and yes merlin lied abt it) + starts questioning uther, we got more arthur’s pov when merlin is at the ‘tavern’ (episodes where merlin is not there and focuses on arthur instead), morgana finds out abt her magic. Freya + gwen romance plotline happened. Percival + Gwaine introduction, merthur kiss but they never acknowledge it (yep they’re in denial)
Finale: kilgharrah lost hope of merlin so he turns to nimueh (in a hidden scene nimueh told arthur the truth abt his birth), nimueh + uther battle (but nimueh lost NOO), balinor DIES, merlin stops kilgharrah, glimpse of morgause (at the ep end). Morgana made a decision to kill uther
Season 3
Tumblr media
General: aithusa is born (morgana + kilgharrah + merlin really likes her), morgana villain arc (she finds out that merlin is gatekeeping magic from her + merlin trying to kill mordred lmao), either morgwen romance or gwencelot (i can’t choose), gwen’s father died, this season = gwen’s arc
Finale: magic reveal, uther’s death, morgouse + morgana attacked the castle, morgana and morgouse fighting + breaking of to their own path (morgana realizes morgause is kind of twisted evil)
Season 4
Tumblr media
General: arthur banning merlin from camelot (merlin runaway arc), arthur + gwen + the knights running the kingdom, morgana redemption arc, morgouse + aggravaine becomes main villain, political shit in camelot (like other kingdom who also despises sorcery/power manipulation, an in-depth look of other kingdoms), GAIUS DIES, hunnith + aithusa + kilgharrah scenes, mordred + merlin + morgana bonding, ygraine scenes, arthur trying to forget merlin but CANT, oh and aggravaine is also a villain here but he actually has personality and pure evil, arthur getting excalibur, arthur is really struggling to find himself here (to be like his father or follows his heart). Btw merlin is there and it shows every time magic related enemies attacks camelot/everytime arthur is about to die really but he’s literally in the shadows now and arthur pretends not to notice
Finale: morgause + aggravaine attacking the kingdom, arthur accepts + forgiving merlin + morgana back and assign them as court sorceress + court physician, hunnith scenes, arthur tolerating magic, adopting mordred (apology for killing his father lol), probably adopting aithusa
Season 5
Tumblr media
General: arthur lifts the ban against magic, marrying merlin, cendred is a villain here (however he is introduced in s4), merlin GETTING A STAFF (also introduced in previous seasons but he’s worthy of it here, arthur made it btw and it’s a power up for melrin)
Finale: morgause + cendred finale attack, a few deaths (they won thoe cuz this is the good ending)
End:
Camelot brings a new era (symbolizing change)
Arthur: King
Merlin: Queen
Gwen: Court Advisor
Morgana: Court Sorceress
Aithusa: Court Dragon
Why i think merthur should be canon:
1) they’re gay
2) real reason: so i think its good for the plot too since magic is a euphemism for gay, relates to the theme of arthur bringing change to camelot but other than marrying a servant, he marries a MALE servant who has magic ☺️🫶😘🙏
Series ends with everyone at the roundtable, gathering for a meeting
Okay that’s it let me know what you want to change 🥰

Merlin BBC UK TV Show - A Psychological Analysis Series Part 9
The Disney Dead Parents Troupe In Merlin
Disney is the undisputed master of the dead parents troupe and the Merlin series adopts this troupe fairly consistently.
This is the status of all the main recurring characters's parents:
Tumblr media
Even though Merlin is the only character whose both parents were alive, he was still raised by his mother as a single parent. The episode where Merlin meets his father, the father ends up dying.
Morgana was initially introduced as an orphan but we come to know later on that Uther is her father.
The psychological impact of being raised as an orphan and / or single parent manifests in very interesting ways among the characters, however this phenomenon deeply affects Arthur Pendragon.
Uther is a typical distant and repressive father who has channeled all his hopes and emotions on Arthur.
Tumblr media
This style of upbringing however has left his son emotionally repressed and the absence of a doting mother figure has rendered him needing to be tended to like a child along with major abandonment issues. His psychosexual development couldn’t follow the normal path, as he never had the chance to experience and overcome the attraction to his mother. As Uther had to play the part of both mother and father, we could say that Arthur didn’t successfully resolve his Oedipus complex. This manifests in the form of Arthur constantly seeking attention from Merlin from the moment Merlin becomes his servant. Merlin basically acts as his nanny from waking him, to bathing him, to dressing him, to feeding him and everything in between. AND THIS IS FOR A FULL GROWN ADULT AND NOT A CHILD !
SEASON 1 EPISODE 1 ENDS WITH SOMEONE COMING INTO GAUIS CHAMBERS SAYING ARTHUR IS LOOKING FOR MERLIN. LIKE REALLY ARTHUR YOU CANT GO ONE EPISODE WITHOUT HAVING MERLIN WAIT ON YOU HAND AND FOOT!!!
People can excuse this behavior stating Arthur is a royal and hence it is normal for royals to be tended to constantly by their servants. However you never see Uther being tended to hand and foot like Arthur does. Uther even comments that Arthur is strangely fond of the boy.
In addition, Arthur throws a tantrum whenever Merlin goes missing highlighting his need to be nurtured and looked after.
In the The Hollow Queen episode where Merlin goes with Daegal Arthur literally seems exasperated over Merlin’s disappearance searching the whole castle like a lost child. He even has Gwen and Gauis replicate some of Merlin’s duties for him.
In the Diamond Of The Day Episode 1, when Merlin tells Arthur he wont be going to Camalan, Arthur cannot bring himself to say he needs Merlin with him but chooses to express his hurt by calling Merlin a coward.
youtube
Arthur fear of losing people close to him is a running theme in the series even at his own deteriment.
Arthur goes to help & rescue Merlin and Gwen even when Uther forbids it. Arthur goes to help & rescue his knights even when Merlin disapproves. Arthur trusts Aggravaine so readily because he is his kin and Arthur is traumatized and vulnerable after Uther’s death. Arthur even agrees to legalize sorcery because he thinks it will save Uther’s and Modred’s lives.
Overall this series has such rich and complex themes .
No wonder that even after 10 years since the series ended, it is still trending strong !!!

Imagine if Gwaine didn’t arrive on time and Aggravaine successfully killed Gaius. S4 Merlin would be so much angstier and darker. Merlin would probably resign himself not telling anyone about his secret, especially that his mum would be the only person left close to him that knows about his magic.

Arthur: Uncle. You're not bringing any weapons.
Aggravaine: Sire. I've been there a few years back. I might have made myself a few enemies thereabouts.
Merlin: *sarcastic* Enemies? You?! No! How can it be!

Okay new question: if you were to rewrite merlin who do you think should be endgame villain, why and what is their goal

ok but why’d Aggravaine call Gwaine ‘Sir Gawain’ in ‘The Secret Sharer’
It’s making me think that Aggravaine knew more about Gwaine’s background (as a noble) and was using that to blackmail him in a sense
It’d totally be up Aggravaine’s alley to dig up dirt on all of Arthur’s inner circle 👀
(Also reminds me of Dragoon’s taunt to Gwaine in ‘A Servant of Two Masters’ that got him mad immediately)

Arthur & Merlin & Love.
So. Today I want to talk about these two and the gift that bbc Merlin gave us, which is when they showed us both boys in love.
Let's start with Arthur.
Arthur is a prince. He's arrogant, stubborn, condescending, I can go on but I don't want to, because he's also kind, and gentle, and he cares so much for the people he loves it actually hurts me to see it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he's with Gwen, he's completely vulnerable. He's playful, he's devoted, he wastes no opportunity to tell her how he feels about her.
What I love about Arthur in love is this, how he shows his affection with words of affirmation. We see him trying to do various acts to show Gwen how he feels about her (trying to cook dinner, breakfast in bed, for examples), but they always come short. Why? Because he doesn't get it. He knows Gwen would appreciate these things so he tries, but he always ends up telling Merlin to do the hard work bc he doesn't really get the importance behind these things.
He's a man of words, we can see this when Uther tells him he's precious to him (back in s1) and he's confused, bc Uther had never told him something similar, so he assumed his father didn't love him. He needs words of affirmation, which is why I think he trusted Morgana and Aggravaine so much. Obviously there was also the family factor, but these two showered him in compliments when trying to get him to trust them, they told him over and over again how they loved him, and he drank it all up, desperate for love in the way Uther never could provide.
We even see this with Merlin. When Merlin doesn't want to talk, that's all Arthur does. He tries to cheer him up in any way he can tries to comfort him by asking what's wrong, willing to listen. Obviously this doesn't work, bc if Merlin were to talk about his problems, he would have to tell Arthur about his magic so when Arthur tries to cheer him up he usually smiles at him, he jokes and plays the part, just so that Arthur will be satisfied that his friend is better.
But let's see Merlin, shall we?
Merlin in love melted my heart for a few reasons. The first is how much of a caretaker this boy is. I am 100% sure that in modern times he would be a nurse or maybe a teacher. He cares so much, and he loves unconditionally.
So when Freya arrives, a scared lonely girl, traumatized and distrustful of the world around her, Merlin pours his heart and sould into caring for her. Everything he does, it's for her, he's thinking of her in every second of that episode, it's painfully obvious how happy he is to have someone to love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second thing I love about him is how gentle he is. Arthur in love is decisive, he's passionate, unafraid to show his affection. Merlin is so gentle, he kisses her with care, like she's priceless and fragile. He always hesitates, always looks at her before any sign of affection, just to be sure she's fine with it.
When I'm telling you I cried during her death scene. What brought me to tears wasn't the death itself, it was how Merlin acted. When he sees her on the floor, naked and hurt, he immediately gives her his jacket, just to let her be comfortable. His gaze doesnt linger, he's not even uncomfortable, he looks at her eyes, his only concern is caring for her. In the lake's shore, she's wearing the dress he stole for her, and I get a little teary eyed just thinking how careful he must have been when dressing her, so respectful and loving.
Third thing I love about him: he's so reassuring. He keeps telling her that he'll be back, that she's not alone, that he's going to look after her. He never gets tired of saying it, always says it with love in his eyes.
I think that's why Arthur and Merlin work so well together, why Arthur gravitates towards Merlin whenever something goes wrong. Merlin is never afraid to tell him when he's fucked up, but he's also the one who tells him when he's doing well, that's he's being a good prince (and later King).
Arthur thrives when he's encouraged, when he's assured he's a good person, a good King. Merlin is always telling him this. When Morgana invades Camelot, who spent days trailing after Arthur, telling him he's a good King, telling him not to listen to anyone else? Merlin. Arthur loves him so much because Merlin always tells him the truth, he can trust him to not be a suck up, to tell him when he's right and when he's wrong.
Even when he doesn't ask it, Merlin reassures him. That scene (I've been searching for like twenty minutes and I cannot find it somebody help me) I'm which Merlin wakes Arthur up and he drags him out of bed (again it's my favourite scene please someone help me), Arthur doesn't even say anything, but Merlin tells him what a good job he's been doing.
Tumblr media
(Am i even discussing love and these two if I don't add a gif of their intense eye-fucking?)
So yeah, thats my tiny thesis on these two. I wanted to add how all this contributes on merthur's romantic relationship (bc this is all canon) but I'll reblog this with that bit just in case someone wants to reblog this part without merthur.
If anyone reached the end of this, I thank you and I'm sorry you had to read my ramblings I've just been thinking about these two a lot lately.
