Lovejoy are your new indie-punk obsession
Tumblr media
Lovejoy is in this article!
There’s an undeniable link between Lovejoy and the internet, not only because the band’s reputation and success were built digitally, but due to the platform that frontman Will Gold had built from his streaming days. There, Gold developed a devoted fanbase and gained the trust and admiration of people who enjoyed who he was as a person. Gold then started premiering his original solo work on his Twitch channel, dipping his toes into the music scene while remaining afloat in his streaming career. Eventually, he founded Lovejoy.
But Lovejoy are so much more than Gold and his Twitch platform — it’s a combination of people and different tastes in music, perspectives, and understandings. Each member plays a pivotal role in the band, outside of playing instruments. “We’re all pooling different batches of influences. None of us like the same music,” bassist Ash Kabosu explains. The hardcore influence comes from Kabosu and drummer Mark Boardman and their desire for “more moshing” at their shows, whereas the love of funk-pop stems from Gold and lead guitarist Joe Goldsmith, mixed with Gold’s mutual adoration for Arctic Monkeys from an early age. The band’s fun, friendly relationship with each other bleeds into the one they have with their fanbase.
It was the middle of the pandemic, and while the streets were empty, and the news played distantly in the background, something big was brewing in the U.K. During those quiet days, Lovejoy, a Brighton-based outfit, would emerge. With an intoxicating sound that channels alt-rockers Arctic Monkeys and the Killers, Lovejoy also incorporate elements of hardcore music throughout their tracks. In the band’s words, they “find the sounds that we like and then elevate those ideas.”
Playing under pseudonyms in undisclosed venues and working furiously in studios, they became Lovejoy. Gold and Goldsmith founded the band after meeting in another folk group. Kabosu was later recruited in a Smashburger, and Boardman was hired on Fiverr, before being asked to officially join. The chemistry was immediate, Kabosu explains, “The very first day all four of us were in one place was when we were recording [debut EP] Are You Alright?” Their sense of humor was identical, and they were on the same wavelength. With Gold’s memorable past as a streamer and an already dedicated legion of fans, Lovejoy quickly rose from the chaos of the pandemic.
After their experimentation with different pseudonyms, this year showcased their first shows as Lovejoy. With a U.K. tour during March and an impressive festival run from all over Europe to the US, totaling over 15 individual festivals, earlier this year, the band are gearing up to finish the year off with an EU/U.K. tour featuring Good Kid, an indie-rock band from Toronto. The tour has already sold out — and Lovejoy haven’t even released an album yet. “Hold your breath. It’ll be worth the wait,” Gold insists.
The excitement over this quartet is palpable, as their addictive rock blend consists of double-kick drums, chugging basslines, and smooth melodies. While Lovejoy are neither technically hardcore nor punk, they tap into heavier techniques due to Kabosu and Boardman’s interests in bands like Linkin Park and Bring Me The Horizon. Kabous found Linkin Park as a kid and was “mindblown,” “My friend Jamie had just gone on holiday to the States, and he came back, and he was losing his mind over this CD that he and his dad had bought. It was Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory.” And has been influenced ever since.
Their latest EP, Wake Up & It’s Over, showcases a blend of upbeat, angsty emo and emotional indie-rock tracks. “It’s not intentional, and it’s not specific,” Kabosu remarks about the blend of genres. The first track on the record, “Portrait of a Blank Slate,” was originally written by Gold as a way to distract people from COVID-19 and other recent disasters. “I tend to write about what I’m feeling, and what I know. I think life is just poetry happening. All around, I see it more as a reflection,” he says. The moody, dark bass introduction to the song sets up for the four-to-the-floor kick drum, riding the high hats, and intense cymbal thrashing in their chorus. “Call Me What You Like” discusses the eggshells in the beginning stages of a relationship, where both are unsure of their emotional commitment. With Gold’s poetic songwriting, painting pictures and imagery to allude to the true meaning of his words, the tracks show that Lovejoy have an ear for good melodies. “I think it’s just stuff that’s innate in us,” Kabosu elaborates. “Because it’s all that some of us listen to on a day-by-day basis.”
Yet, only two months before the release of Wake Up & It’s Over, Lovejoy released a record under the alias Anvil Cat. The EP, which featured rerecordings of songs off 2021’s Are You Alright?, was a forewarning, juxtaposing, the quiet, delicate nature of Anvil Cat’s EP and the crash and bang of their upcoming project. “At the time, we were about to release our third EP,” Kabosu explains. “We were building anticipation for that and getting people excited, teasing bits here and there. I felt like it would be a weird step to drop an acoustic EP.” But it was beyond just that acoustic EP — it’s for the future. “It’s nice for us to have this additional moniker, which is a separate entity, where if we wanted to try something a little bit different or make acoustic songs, we can put it over there,” he adds.
The relationship the band held with their fans was once considered unheard of. Consistently reaching out and engaging with their fanbase, realizing the power of their fanbase’s “clever” and “quick” intelligence and passion, and rewarding them with puzzles and QR codes — it’s all there if the fans choose. Anvil Cat’s acoustic EP is just an extension of that. “It’s for the people who are die-hard fans and really want to hear everything we do. It’s there for them,” Kabosu says. In modern times, that kind of friendly, open relationship between artists and their fans is common — something that was unachievable 20 years ago.
With a dedicated legion of fans already stacked in Lovejoy’s corner, developing during the midst of the pandemic, they’re barreling toward a future full of investigative fan interactions and shows around the world. COVID tested the band, and now, the positive outcome is touring the world.

The Maine - Self-Titled
Last month marked the 15th anniversary of Arizona alt-rock band The Maine's debut album, 2008's Can't Stop Won't Stop. As an emo / scene 15-year-old kid when that record came out, it hit me in all the right ways, especially for being a prominent album in the "neon pop-punk" scene. That record showcased a lot of promise from the band, incorporating folk and indie-rock sensibilities into their otherwise emo and pop-punk sound, but as I got older, I began liking them less and less. This trend isn't uncommon, as a lot of bands I used to listen to in high school have either broken up, faded into obscurity, or changed their sound (for better or worse, but in most cases, "worse"), and in some cases, transcending the "emo" label that they started off with.
As for The Maine, and where they fall in that wide spectrum, they're a band that I stopped listening to after 2015's American Candy, sort of because of how they changed their sound. I was becoming less and less enamored with them as time went on, anyway, and American Candy was the last straw. As much as I loved their debut, I felt as though they were only getting worse and worse, and that record was a huge step down in quality and creativity. Now that was eight years ago, and since then, they've released another three albums, but I haven't paid attention to any of them. After a few years of being away, they're back with a self-titled album, and self-titled albums are often a means of reinvention, but I don't have any context for what they sounded like before this record. The self-titled album came out on 8/1/23, which holds significance to them for being the number of the parking garage the band always met up in when they started, as well as the name of their record label and their festival.
Maybe it's that I didn't have any context going into this self-titled album, or that I haven't listened to them in almost a decade, but this album pleasantly surprised me in a few different ways. From the band's overall sound to being rooted in 80s-soaked arena-rock / pop-rock, or to vocalist John O'Callaghan improving tenfold on this record, I absolutely love this record. Sometimes an album just hits you in the right way, regardless of what it is, and it could be for a variety of reasons, but most often, the timing just feels right. Right off the bat, this album is a perfect "summer album." There are very catchy, fun, and groovy songs that are great for this time of year. including a couple of songs that will make my favorite songs list of the year, such as "Leave In Live" and "Thoughts I Have While Lying In Bed." The way the band combines 80s-influenced arena-rock / pop-rock riffs with new wave, synth-pop, and electronic textures from time to time really makes this album stand out. Make no mistake, this album isn't unique by any means, but that doesn't mean it hits any less harder. The hooks are impeccable on this thing, especially on a handful of cuts that I really can't get out of my head.
I mentioned a bit ago that vocalist John O'Callaghan has improved greatly on here, and maybe he's improved more on their last few albums, but he was always a vocalist that I liked, but never loved, just for how limited his range was. I gotta say, however, that this sound suits his voice well, and he even has more of a range and more emotion than ever before. The lyrics, too, are quite good, despite being about relationships, and things of that nature, but they're written well this time around, so I can look past the lyrics being rather generic and not the focal point of the album. Their lyrics have always been either decent or really bad, and their debut album is good indication of that, but the lyrics on this record feel more mature, reflective, and more introspective than I've heard on previous albums, albeit in a somewhat vague in a relatable kind of way, but there are a lot of clever, interesting, and enjoyable lyrics throughout this record.
There's something to be said about listening to a band that you either used to love more than a decade ago, and that you've either forgotten about, or fallen out of favor with, and really enjoying their new project. I had no idea what to expect with the self-titled, and it's a wonderful little record. Of course, it helps that this album is only 36 minutes, so it's a breeze to get through, and that's a perfect length for a record like this. I'll even go as far to say that this is one of my favorite albums of the year, because of how slick, catchy, fun, and groovy this thing is. It just hits me in all the right spots, and I would never have guessed that the new album from The Maine, a band I haven't thought of in a decade, give or take, would be one of my favorites of this year. That just goes to show you that bands can surprise you, even when you least expect it, but that's the beauty of music.

Could I get the fluff alphabet for Abbacchio? 👉👈 Please and thank you💞
You’re welcome friend ^^
Thank you for requesting, hope you enjoy!
Abbacchio fluff alphabet
Cut for lenght!
Tumblr media
A = Admiration (what do they absolutely adore about you?)
Determination!
He admires how much effort and love you can put into something.
Don’t matter what happens, you won’t give up.
If you’re willing to give up, Abbacchio would try to give you support.
You make all these incredible things, there’s no reason to stop now.
But if that is really hurting you physically/mentally, Abbacchio will encourage you to stop for some time and relax. (He’ll give you a bath and maybe take a bath with you, if you’re too tense)
B = Body (what is their favorite part of your body?)
Your thighs!
He likes the warmth of it and finds it very comfy.
Sometimes he gets home while you're watching tv, and he just put his head in your thighs and take a nap.
C = Cuddling (how do they like to cuddle?)
Abbacchio isn’t the type to cuddle.
But he starts getting more used to it after some time dating.
Give him a surprise hug and he will scream.
Abbacchio will get angry and tell you to never mention this happened to the Passione members.
He likes it when you two are laying in the bed and cuddling together but will pretend he doesn't like it.
Abbacchio can either be the small spoon or the big spoon... He will deny he likes being the small spoon btw.
D = Dates (what does their ideal date with you look like?)
Abbacchio likes to do home dates, just you and him, laying in the bed or lying on the couch, with your head on his chest while watching some movie and drinking some wine.
Abbacchio's perfect date is you and him taking a walk on the beach at night, the starry night, the ocean sounds, only you and him. Just the thought of it makes him feel content.
E = Emotions (how do they express emotion around you?)
Abbacchio is difficult to read.
He is not even a little bit vocal about emotions (he will get a little more vocal after some 6/7 months dating you), so you better learn how to read him.
He has a problem showing his emotions.
Sometimes he only shows his emotions if he is feeling them extremely, like extreme anger or extreme sadness.
He is afraid of disturbing you with his emotions.
F = Family (do they want one? If they do, when?)
Abbacchio doesn’t like the thought of having a family because of his work.
He would love to create memories with his family and spend time with them. (even though, he won't show it too much)
And by working for the mafia, he won’t have much time to spend with his kids.
One of Abbacchio's biggest worries is involving his kids with the mafia. It’s dangerous for both him and the kids.
He is really afraid of losing his family, so he would be protective.
Abbacchio is also really afraid of being a bad father or giving his kids an inadequate example.
But, he likes the thought of getting home and has his children greeting and hugging him. oh boy I'm getting soft
G = Gifts (how do they feel about gift giving? What are their habits when it comes to this?)
he would give you a bottle of wine for you two drink at night
Abbacchio won’t even remember giving gifts is a thing, until you give him a gift on Valentine's day, while you ask him what he prepared for you.
He would look at you with a confused expression, like, Valentine’s day? who’s she? until he realizes.
He would admit he forgot it and would feel guilty after that, but won’t show it.
He will often forget about events he has to give you gifts.
After that, Abbacchio would do mental notes, of what things you like to receive, and/or would ask you directly what you would like to receive.
Abbacchio wouldn’t give gifts for special dates (only if like, you celebrate your birthday? he would give you a gift)
He would give you gifts at random moments, he saw something you would like? he would buy and give you as a gift. But he prefers when you two go together choose a gift for you.
He will be grateful if you give him something, but he won’t mind if he doesn't receive any gifts.
H = Holding Hands (when/how do they like to hold hands?)
Abbacchio isn’t the type who likes PDA, so he would just hold hands with you when you and he are alone, mostly at home.
He would hold your hand when you are laying in the bed with him, or on the couch.
He will hold your hand more often after some time dating you.
Instead of holding hands, Abbacchio prefers putting his arm around your shoulder.
I = Injury (how would they act if you got hurt?)
( s/o is a member of Passione)
Abbacchio would get angry.
Even if his stand isn’t the type to hurt someone, he would make sure to make whoever hurt you s u f f e r.
While making the person who hurt you wish they never had been born, he would let Bruno take care of you.
If you are recovering and you can’t get out of bed, he would just put a tray in your nightstand with a bunch of painkillers and everything you would need.
But, he will pretemnd to be a little annoyed if you want him to take care you.
If Abbacchio has to go out for some reason, he would call Bruno to take care of you while he is out.
J = Jokes (do they like to joke around with or prank you? how?)
Neither jokes nor pranks.
He doesn't like to prank you if he accidentally hurt you? better not risk it.
Abbacchio just points out something he finds funny and/or thinks you would like it.
he might ask if you have some idea to prank Giorno
K = Kisses (how do they like to kiss you?)
I believe abbacchio already had other s/o while working as a cop, so he has experience with kissing.
Abacchio’s first kiss with you is going to be experienced and kinda rough.
Abbacchio is rough when he kisses you, but, if you want him to be more passionate, you just need to ask him and he will try.
He doesn’t do it naturally and will get a little annoyed, but will give goodnight kisses if you ask him.
He likes it when you kiss the top of his head and gives him forehead kisses.
He will never admit it though.
L = Love (how do they show you they love you?)
Abbacchio isn’t vocal about what he feels, so he rarely says he loves you, or how beautiful he think you are.
But, he says at random moments in a murmur expecting you to not listen, if you do and responds to him he will be a blushing mess and will get angry while trying to hide it.
Like said in “c” he isn’t the cuddle type, he prefers to randomly kiss you while you two are in private.
M = Memory (favorite memory together?)
One night, when you two got home from an exhausting day of work,  took a bath together, delivered some pizza, and after some time you two were already drunk 2  bottles of wine and were really needy and laughing while staring at the wall.
Abbacchio won't admit he got drunk like that the next day and will deny he did anything last night that. (even though he remembers almost everthing)
Not the best memory but definitely a really good and funny one, he chuckles whenever he remembers that night.
N = Nightmare (what is their worst fear?)
Losing you.
At the beginning of the relationship, he is reluctant about being with you,  he is afraid to create a bond with you and happen the same thing again.
You are the most precious thing that happened to his life, you are like a light to him.
Losing you would just ruin his life.
Even if he is a little rough sometimes, he loves you with all his heart and would do anything for you.
O = Oddity (what is one quirk they have?)
he randomly gets home from the market with like, 8 bottles of wine
When Abbacchio drinks too much wine he starts to get really touchy and needy with you.
If you two are at some Passione reunion/party it almost starts to bother the whole gang, but soon they find it funny how needy Abbacchio can be.
Mista and Narancia will laugh SO much
You’ll need to take Abbacchio home if he doesn’t stop drinking.
He will deny he did that the next day.
P = Pet Names (what do they like to call you?)
At the beginning of the relationship, he would call you by your nickname.
After some months when he gets more comfortable. He would call you caro/cara (dear) and Tesoro (treasure).
And after some 8 months of dating, he would call you “amore” sometimes. ( he calls you amore more often as time pass)
Q = Quality Time (how do they like to spend time with you?)
Abbacchio likes to lay with you on the couch under a huge blanket, and just stays there enjoying the moment, while he plays with your hair (He also likes when you play with his hair)
You sometimes take a nap in his chest. Come on, who doesn't want to just lay your head in his tidy window and enjoy the warmth and the moment?
He also likes it when you two sit on a table outside of the house during the night and drink some wine while staring at the dark sky.
R = Rhythm (what song reminds you of them?)
Sunshine of Your Love - Cream
Abbacchio is the type who listens to some alt-rock and indie rock. But don’t mind listening to some classics.
He likes the rhythm, but the lyrics… oh the lyrics
“ I've been waiting so long
To be where I'm going
In the sunshine of your love”
After all the bad things that happen, the Passione (mostly Bruno but let’s get Bruabba out of his) and you were the best things, he started having some hope after entering the mafia and meeting you.
His world got brighter when he met you.
S = Secrets (how open are they with you?)
Abbacchio isn’t the type to say “ hey, I want to tell you something”
I think he would just drop his secrets in a random conversation.
Even though he would drop out of nowhere, Abbacchio would overthink if he should tell you, and which moment is the best to tell you.
He’ll only say he needs to tell you something if: is something he wants to tell you as soon as possible, if he can’t find the right moment, or if he is too anxious to tell you.
T = Time (how long did it take you to get together?)
6 months or more
In the first two months, Abbacchio would try to figure out what he was feeling.
in the next two months he would just deny what he is feeling, he must be wrong, this isn’t his kind of stuff. He is too rough to love someone.
After that, he will accept his feelings better but will think he has no chance with you for the next two months
A guy like him? rough with everyone, hard to deal, that just-drinks wine all day? no way you could accept him, someone so good with a guy like him.
After that period, Abbacchio wouldn’t take any step. These two months of believing no one deserves him won….
UNTIL YOU CONFESS YOUR FEELINGS TO HIM.
He would have a hard time saying that what you feel is reciprocal. He would be kinda rough but you know he means what he says. Abbacchio isn’t the type to prank someone *ep 5 flashbacks* y-you know what I mean. There’s no reason to lie about it.
He is just afraid of getting close to someone he likes and then happening the same as years earlier.
He would give it a try, maybe someone like you can date a guy like him right?
OH BOY I’M SORRY ABBACCHIO I LOVE YOU IM GONNA CRY
U = Upset (how do they act when you’re upset?)
Abbacchio knows that you’re upset the moment he looks at you.
Abbacchio feels a lot of things, so he can read you very well.
He would put an arm around your shoulder and ask what happened.
If you tell him, he will give a hum to show he listened to you. And comfort you.
If you want to spend the day with him he would be glad, but he also understands if you want to be alone.
V = Vaunt (what are they proud of? Do they like to show you off?)
Abbacchio will only show you something he is REALLY proud of, he charges himself a lot, so when he do some mistake he ends up not liking that much.
When abbacchio is proud of something, he will show that thing to you saying to take a look after that he will say with a small smile on his face "I did it"
W = Warrior (how do they feel about you fighting? Would they fight for you, beside you, etc?)
Abbacchio is fine with you fighting, he knows you can take care of yourself.
But will be really protective if it is a mission you will go alone.
He prefers when you two go together on a mission, so he can keep an eye on you and make sure you’re safe.
X = X-Ray (how well are they able to read you?)
Like said earlier, really well!
Abbacchio would make mental notes about how you act in each mood.
He would also make notes about how you cope when you’re in “negative” emotion.
So he knows what you’re feeling, and might be able to do it with you and help you in some way.
Y = Yes (how would they propose to you?)
It would take Abbacchio really long to propose to you, he still doesn’t believe you like him.
Do you remember the beach date?
He would say how you look good dressed like that the whole walk.
You two stopped to watch the sea and the moon, and then he would say he wanted to tell you something...
“I’ve been thinking about this for some time… I know I’m not the best guy in the world… but...” he would say this while getting on his knees and taking a little box out of his pocket.
“ You want to marry me?” Abbacchio says while opening the box and showing a ring with not too many jewels on, and waiting anxiously for your response.
CLICHÉ I KNOW I'M SORRY
I am writing this while I listen to “All I Ask of You” from Phantom of the Opera. I'm almost CRYING, I NEED ABBACCHIO IN MY LIFE
Z = Zen (what makes them feel calm?)
Abbacchio loves to lay between your legs with his head in your chest while listening to your heartbeat.
Something about it simply makes him feel safe and comfortable
If you say he looks cute like that he will deny, if you insist he will go away.
sometimes he sleeps right there
Thank you for reading!
I’m sorry this took so long
If there’s anything out of caracther please tell me!
I’m sorry some of these are really short, i couldn’t get any inspiration

Some Christian Artists that I forgot to mention in my last post. (Seriously, so many that I forgot!) (Same as before, kinda long and rambly)
Switchfoot!!! My sister was really disappointed to see I didn't include them. 'Only Hope' the entire 'Beautiful Letdown' album. Not quite rock, they have a down to earth "surfer music" sound that can make you feel the emotions in the music, and leave you feeling lighter, as if you felt all the feelings in that short time. (My sister ghostwrote this)
Fireflight, is early 2000s rock personified. My early teenage years were spent with them on all the playlists. 'Unbreakable' 'For Those Who Wait' and 'More Than A Love Song' are a few top songs for me. They had the Christian early 2000s alt. sound without sounding "too Christian" (which is a real problem with some artists.) They talk about the real stuff, but they're still easy to jam to. (Thank you to @dp-marvel94 for mentioning them when I somehow didn't)
Nine Lashes is good too. I've only ever heard 'Anthem For The Lonely' but, I wanted to give them a shout out cause that song is amazing.
Plumb is a balance of Christian Pop, Rock, and Indie Alternative. 'Cut' 'In My Arms' 'Blush' 'I Can’t Do This' and 'Need You Now' are top tier songs that shaped my music taste. She is incredibly talented and has a husky kind of voice that is incredibly distinctive. I saw her at Winter Jam (the only concert I've ever been to) and geeked out super hard.
Superchic[k] is very near and dear to me. They have a very pop rock sound that nears alt. they have a lot of great songs and a bunch of mixes of songs like 'One Girl Revolution (Battle Mix)' which, if you ever need a girl power song, that's one to make you feel like you can do anything. 'Stand In The Rain' 'Rock What You Got' 'Pure' 'Princes and Frogs' 'Suddenly' and 'Hey Hey' are all super good and really fun to listen to. This band is definitely one I can't rec enough.
Relient K is technically not rock. At all. Pop punk all the way. But, they make the list because I love them, and I said so. 'I So Hate Consequences' 'The Only Thing Worse Than Beating A Dead Horse Is Betting On One' 'More Than Useless' 'Who I Am Hates Who I've Been' 'The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything' and 'Sadie Hawkins Dance' are purely amazing and filled with early 2000s energy. I just love them a lot and had to stop before I recced their entire discography.
Hawk Nelson, like Relient K, is Pop Punk. They are amazing and full of energy. The entire 'Smile, It's The End Of The World' album is fantastic. 'From Underneath' 'California' 'Take Me' and '36 Days' are also great songs. They just fill me with so much joy. They have a very fun and "bouncy" feeling to them that just makes me smile. (My sister describes them as a strange combination of Three Dog Night, Bowling For Soup, and Bare Naked Ladies. Bouncy like TDG, conversational/verbal vomit like BFS and BNL.)
And, a quick shout out to Veggie Rocks! The only Rock album that ever came from VeggieTales. It was a bunch of songs from episodes of VeggieTales, performed by popular rock groups, and singers at the time. Rebecca St. James, Stevenson, Sanctus Real, Newsboys, Superchick, Paul Colman, Audio Adrenaline, Relient K, The O.C. Supertones, Tait, and Skillet provided their talents to bring these songs to new life.
For anyone whose never heard of it, VeggieTales was a kids show, that explained Old Testament Bible stories and morality through the adventures of sentient vegetables. It had a lot of fun Silly Songs tm.

CARR’s Latest Single Is Aimed at Every “Loser” You’ve Ever Dated
Tumblr media
With her latest single, “Loser,” LA-based artist CARR, aka Carly McClellan, continues searching for peace of mind, making music for a dissatisfied generation. Her searing track tackles the perils of modern dating, the art of indecisiveness, and the disillusion behind today's gut-wrenching expectations. CARR's upcoming collection of songs centers around a myriad of sonic left-turns and diaristic songwriting, interrogating the stark realities of coming-of-age mistakes, toxic relationships, and the sometimes painful but joyous roads of self-discovery.
The track highlights the artist's pop-punk roots by paying homage to the emotiveness of icons like Avril Lavigne and The All-American Rejects. CARR has an indisputable talent for infusing memorable power-pop guitars and tongue-in-cheek lyrics with brutal honesty. CARR's deadpan delivery, especially on lines like "now you're all alone with your tiny dick," is driven by clever songwriting and contains energy that moves across alt-pop, energetic indie-rock and pop-punk tendencies.
"I fought hard to have that line kept in the song," shares the artist about her more inflammatory lyrics. "8/10 people wanted me to change it, and I was like no way." Wryly observational yet candidly familiar, "Loser" is an immensely relatable anthem that looks back on the crappy people you've dated only to realize all you can do now is poke fun at yourself for dealing with those miserable circumstances in the first place.
CARR shares, "We made 'Loser' about those types of people you date that just really, really suck. It's kind of like a realization of how low you've stooped for them. I wanted to make a fun anthem about it, and something I wish I could've blasted in my car when I was getting over some horrible dudes. It was the most fun I've had in a session probably ever because we were just laughing the whole time, making jokes that we put in the song."
The accompanying music video is an equally engaging piece of art full, partly stemming from CARR's own background in film. The Natalie Leonard and Rachel Cabitt directed music video flirts between melodrama, camp, and the grotesque. "I originally made a mood board for the project, and it had a lot of old horror movie references and just overall dark vibes," explains the New Jersey native. "So, when we had a call with the Pond Creative girls, we talked about how much I love fucked up things and horror in general. So from that, they sent over a treatment, and I was obsessed with the plotline. They nailed it on the first try."
The clip opens with the singer drenched head to toe in blood while she muses over just how horrible of a person her former flame was to her. "I'm obsessed with horror films, so I was strangely so excited for this video and to be made a bloody mess," shares CARR. "The best part was just getting to be covered in blood, running around the streets of New York with everyone staring and concerned. People were terrified. I think a kid even started crying at one point."
CARR is then seen carrying her victim down a flight of apartment stairs and exclaiming in the streets that she "can do so much better." She continues, "The most challenging aspect of it was carrying the 'body bag' up and down the apartment steps. They made it with tons of small plastic bags filled with water to give it the chunkiness of an actual body. It was so heavy, I was genuinely struggling- no acting needed."
"Loser" is an empowering must-add to any summer playlist, perfect for blasting at full volume while going for night drives with your partners in crime.

luuuune can u give music recs? the songs your fics are named after are all so good
Tumblr media
grouping these all together bc most of my inspiration does come from music!! usually, my ideas start w a general vibe or “spark”, and then i flesh it out from there. the spark normally comes from music, but sometimes it’s a book i’m reading, or a conversation i had, or just random things (for example, i saw some flowers earlier this week that gave me an idea for a dabi fic KDHFJSK). i usually pick one song and loop it while i’m writing bc otherwise the variety gets too distracting lol
recs under the cut!! i went pop -> kpop -> punk/emo/alt
to start out w, everyone and their mom recommends chase atlantic lmao but they r just SO GOOD !! and the vibes r so sexy and give me so much angst inspo skfjdkskw
songs: slide, like a rockstar, lust, consume, i never existed. the don’t try this ep is my favorite, and i’m writing a dabihawks punk band au inspired by it!!
i also listen to the weeknd (trilogy), khalid, sza and kehlani (their latest album, it was good until it wasn’t, is a fucking masterpiece) a lot while writing!!
one of my faves is shinee, specifically jonghyun and taemin’s solo albums (ot5 until i die, but their solo music is sexy and sets the ~mood~ for writing smut lmao). i gave some jjong rec’s in the tags of this post!!
taemin songs: heaven, love and pansy hurt my heart. thirsty, criminal, famous, and sexuality are hoe songs lmao
speaking of shinee, i like other kpop as well!! bts are forever my number #1 (hyyh is one of my favorite albums ever — so bittersweet, makes me painfully nostalgic). also looove monsta x !! tomorrow x together, stray kids and ateez are also great. mamamoo r the only girl group that i like, i just can’t vibe w a lot of gg concepts skfjfjsj (although i do like a few soloists)
a lot of people stan kpop just for the idols but i do like the music a lot!!
txt: ghosting, blue hour, drama (the japanese music video is haikyuu concept lmao), our summer
monsta x: middle of the night, nobody else, gasoline (the title is in hangul so you can’t look it up specifically on streaming services, but it’s the second song on the fatal love album), last carnival, blind, my beast, turbulence (again, hangul title, but it’s track 7 on take.2 we are here)
i also recommend solo albums/mixtapes of the monsta x members!! joohoney’s psyche, i.m’s duality, and wonho’s two eps!!
and speaking of solo work, all of the bts rapline have amazing solo mixtapes. i love their group music that’s hype w heavy concepts/production/choreo (ot7 always), but the mixtapes hold a special place in my heart because they feel so ...intimate, almost? like a piece of their hearts that they’re sharing with the world. rm’s mono is the definition of comfort. j-hope’s hope world is lots of fun, but he just released the extended version of blue side, and it’s absolutely heartbreaking (and reminds me a lot of touya lol). and agust d... listen, i love him more than words can say, so his mixtapes d-2 and self-titled, along w the other song’s he’s solo produced like eight by iu, are very special to me.
i’m not majorly into skz/ateez/mamamoo like i am w the other groups, but they’re all amazing performers so i recommend checking out their comeback + awards show stages!!
i also really love eAeon, he’s a korean indie artist, and his music is breathtaking. he just dropped an album called fragile that’s i adore, the lead single don’t features rm of bts and is unbelievably beautiful.
okay that’s all good and fun but the majority of what i listen to is emo shit lmfaoo i’m definitely more into alt + punk music, here are some of my fave bands and fave songs from them!!
blood command: they are unreal i love them SO MUCH!! they’re a norwegian punk rock band w a female singer, return of the arsonist ep is when i got into them and it’s golden. no thank you i’m more into fake grindcore, saturday city, white skin/tanned teeth, and alarm all assassins are some of their best songs imo
dance gavin dance: listen... their music scratches a certain itch in my brain that makes me go insane akdjfjsk they’ve had a bunch of different lineups but the more recent albums with tillian and jon on vocals are my favorites (jonny craig can suck my dick, fuck that dude). lost, son of robot, bloodsucker, young robot, inspire the liars, jesus h. macy are all great. acceptance speech, man of the year, and evaporate make me cry/lose my mind
mannequin pussy: *chefs kiss* drunk ii is a masterpiece, i cried to that shit every day after a break up, so cathartic. cream and kiss are more upbeat, and their latest song perfect is also vv good!!! patience is a beautiful, emotional album, whereas romantic and self titled have more classic alt bops
G.L.O.S.S.: listen, theyre so fucking cool, and i respect the hell out of them. they only released a few songs before disbanding but i’ll cherish those songs until i die. they perfectly embody what punk should be. demo 2015 is on streaming services, and their second and final ep trans day of revenge can easily be found online!!
wow this is getting fucking LONG so i’ll just quickly list a few more, but this was so fun, i love talking ab music!! pls don’t be shy, i’m always down to give more recs or hear about the stuff that u like!!
movements, yonaka, shiny wet machine, real friends, skating polly, nova twins, the japanese house, bratmobile, yours truly. and, ofc, the pop punk staples: jimmy eat world, paramore, waterparks, stand atlantic, neck deep, the story so far, etc etc !!

because at this rate i will simply never have proper full written out bios for my muses, below the cut find some more detailed information about my muses that give you more info than just the vibey little blurbs i shat out at some ungodly hour of the day:
akllasqa mamani:
aklla is the daughter of a scientist that had all her titles stripped of her, and prohibited from working in the field after unethical experiments came to light. this doesn’t stop her from laying low and forming a personal lab, although under a watchful eye. she proceeds to learn and absorb all she can about genetic editing, and with the use of the CRISPR method and friends manning labs, she produces her own genetically edited egg. this is where aklla comes from, she’s planted in her mother’s womb and grows to be a girl who continues her life under a microscope. her mother is constantly poking and prodding at her, in a desperate attempt to note every deviation from regular behaviour from a girl who was tailored. aklla is diagnosed with anti social personality disorder in the future, and as a child is known to have conduct disorder. she’s been called a sociopath more times than she can count and is prone to sudden, and violent outbursts. all in all, a difficult teenager trying to maneuver through a society that works against anyone with any mental diagnosis.
jolene walsh:
honestly jolene’s the only one i have a full bio for, so because i’m lazy catch that here.
vivian han:
vivian grows up in a house that values tradition, and in particular the image of a good family. her parents are not overtly religious, but they’re devout christian’s. they got married young, and without much thought and this leads to strife in their household. they start to fall out of love right in front of her eyes, but old time tradition and religious beliefs compel them to stay together despite divorce being the healthiest option for them both. being the oldest daughter in the house, vivian often has to play peacekeeper between her parents fights. she grows weary of it, but knows her options are limited. the older she gets, the more time she spends outside of the house. parties where the music is so loud she can’t hear her thoughts, she drinks away whatever she’ll have to face when she gets home. vivian is the fun girl, and the smart girl, and the party girl, and she does whatever she can to keep up every front she has. straight a student, but beloved by her peers. and only because she tries so hard. sometimes that comes with a small mean streak to be accepted by her peers, but she grows out of that quickly. guilt wears on her conscience heavily. an unhealthy relationship is all she knows as she grows up and so it leads her into her own. she dates a boy who becomes her ruin, but she tolerates it because that’s all she knows. she tolerates it even when he pushes her against a wall and she’s worried she has a concussion. he never hits her, and that’s his excuse. she files a restraining order after much thought and push from her friends. but it only makes her wild nights even worse, she has more pain to drink away now.
gabriel and ronan:
two boys that were once part of the same band, now leading two completely different lives. gabriel has always had his head in the clouds, always dreamt of life as a musician. his parents could do little to stop what his heart wanted. as a kid he’d play in shows any chance he got at school, and even kick started his own garage band with his friends. he never wanted to be the star of the show, gabriel was more than happy in the background. and that’s how he becomes the bass player of Golden Ours. he grew up in a bustling house that knew nothing about love, and it’s what he puts out into the world. his energy comes from genuine joy, and the desire to spread kindness. he’s a humble star from humble beginnings, and does his best to not let fame get to his head. naturally, there are slip ups, ones he does his best to hide. but all in all, he makes for pleasant company. not much tragedy in this one, rather typical if you ask me.
ronan on the other hand grows up in completely different circumstances. the accident child of an alcoholic and a junkie, he never really knows stability in his life. his parents never have a good means to finances, and he picks up odd jobs as a kid to support himself if not his parents. he holds his father’s anger and defends himself after each bark and bite from his parents. he doesn’t grow up in a good house, and he doesn’t know if he likes them more when they’re sober or completely out of their minds. he swings a fist at this father at eighteen and is met with his ass on the curb. with little to nothing to his name, he sofa surfs as long as he can, gets himself jobs here and there, nothing that lasts too long. he comes across gabriel before the band hits the charts and it begins as roommates soon turned bandmates. he joins as lead guitarist. ronan’s one to butt heads with the band often, but at the end of the day, they’re family and family was meant to fight. but the disputes only heighten when ronan pushes them to take deals that come their way. change their look, change their sound, change change change for the mainstream media. they won’t take it, and so ronan does. leaves the band behind and embraces life as someone he doesn’t recognize in the mirror. he goes from alt indie rock to more mainstream pop rock. his manager decides what he wears, what he sings, what he signs up for. the money’s good, but he hates himself. but the money’s good.
mira deol:
mira lives a quiet life for the most part. second oldest daughter of five, their family is never without festivities. she’s a good student, not the top of her class, but trying. she sits in the middle of everything, never too loud, never too quiet. mira seems to breeze by life in the background and a part of her itches to be at the front of the show. she knows she’s not built for it, so instead she’ll smile and nod through it all. her life flips upside down, she becomes part of headlines when her family is killed at sixteen. in the middle of the night, the confront what they think to be a robber. her father and his broken english yelling downstairs, threatening to call the cops when a gun’s pulled out on them. mira, silent, watches from the top of the stairs while her entire family is sat down on the rug. one by one, they’re lined up and taken out with a single shot to the head. execution style. she scampers into a closet, and her hands search the dark floors for the gun she knows her dad has. and she sits there, as quiet as ever, hands shaking as she holds the gun in front of her. she thinks he’s left until she hears the creaks up the stairs and the closet door swings open. she closes her eyes and empties the bullets into her assailant without a second thought. mira’s found with blood, both her own and his, on her body. she hasn’t left the closet when they find her, a neighbour calls when they hear the last round of gunshots. her face takes the newspapers by storm and she’s a charity case. without any other family overseas, she moves in with her next door neighbours. a girl she knows from school. she suffers from traumatic mutism for a year. rehab and therapy get her to open up, and she cries anytime she speaks for another year. her life is spent in and out of therapy, and when she finally moves out and manages to get into university, she lives alone. everything about her life screams at her to live with company, but fear of what happens to company around her forces her into living alone. currently, mira is still healing. it’s been five years since her family’s death and she’s pushing herself back into society slowly. her emotions are hard to handle, and she’s incredibly clingy when she gets attached.
buster jones:
buster lives a comfortable life. his parents work good jobs and they don’t expect much from him. as the youngest of a trio of boys, he’s the family’s baby for most of his life and he milks it for all it’s worth. he spends most of his time gaming, eating, or hanging out with friends. never the best student, but he manages to pull through with the tutors his parents throw at him a countless number of times. he doesn’t tell them that he’s paid kids to do his homework and essays, they don’t need to know that. but when both brothers leave the house, grow old enough to make it out on their own, the attention turns back to buster. buster who does nothing for the family but eat half the contents of their fridge, which can no longer be excuse as the appetite of a growing boy. so his parents make him take up a job, any job, they tell him, and so he goes to work at a mcdonald’s. he reckons it’ll be the least amount of effort he’ll have to put in, and impossible to get fired from. plus, free fries anytime he so pleased. he’s working through his last year of highschool, projected to have to take a fifth year if summer courses fail him. when he makes it to college he takes up criminal justice. not with the dreams of being a lawyer like his mother so hopes, but with the dream of getting into the fbi. only because it looks cool on television and he swears they know everything about area 51, and the gps’ that babies are injected with. an avid reader of conspiracies that he spouts like his life depends on it, what he doesn’t have in book smart, he also doesn’t have much in street smart. how buster makes it through the day, everyone wonders. but somehow he does.
elena castillo:
she grows up doted on. an only child, given the world at her every whim. her father loves her, her mother loves her, but doesn’t have to love as much since her father takes care of that part. her father dies when she’s eight, and her mother doesn’t take it well. elena had shown various talents at a young age, and the one her mother hones in on is her ability to skate. never having taken professional figure skating, her mother says it’s time for her to try. she doesn’t protest much, knows just how pushy her mother can be. she’s a good child for the most part, prone to temper tantrums, but mother knows best. elena’s mother focuses all her energy on her daughter, and it becomes obsessive. like a pageant mom, she signs her up for every competition under the stars. elena is bound to win most of them, and that’s because her mother doesn’t let her rest until she gets her routine down pat. elena’s perfectionism is taught and forced down her throat, it doesn’t come naturally. it doesn’t take long for the girl to embrace that figure skating has become her life. pulled out of classes on a whim just to participate in competitions, she learns how to catch up with classwork quickly without disappointing her mother. she never admits it, but she seeks validation from the one parent she still has. thinks maybe she’ll gain the same love she got from her father if she does it right. elena is quick to snap as she grows older. becomes her biggest critique, and with it comes a sharp attitude that she’s quick to lash out onto others. she projects her own insecurities, and drags people down to bring herself up. she’s now a professional figure skater, one of the best of her age at twenty. but it didn’t come easy, and she’s not willing to give it up easy. in front of the cameras and the crews she waves and smiles. once the lights drop, so does the facade and she doesn’t bother to lift a finger for anyone she deems not worth her time. she becomes more like mother, and over the years, they become more like partners than mother and daughter. their relationship is never healthy.

20 Asian American Musicians To Add To Your Playlist Now
Tumblr media
Over the past several years, the K-pop industry in the U.S. has grown exponentially. The fan enthusiasm behind bands like BTS has drawn parallels to The Beatles, and so many K-pop groups have received the same passionate reception. The attention is well-deserved, but Asian artists represent a multitude of musical genres (even just within the K-pop industry) — a fact that should not be overlooked. Whether you're a fan of indie rock, R&B, hip-hop, or dance music, you won't want to sleep on these Asian American musicians.
Asian artists have recently received some long-deserved recognition in the entertainment industry, primarily in film. In 2020, Bong Joon-ho's Parasite won big at the Oscars. The following year, Youn Yuh-Jung won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Minari, which also scored The Walking Dead alum Steven Yeun a nomination for Best Actor. However, there's still plenty of work to be done within the music landscape to ensure equal representation is achieved.
BTS, most notably, has seen unprecedented success in the U.S. Still, despite being invited to attend the last three Grammys, they've yet to take home an award, highlighting the discrepancy between their immense success and the Recording Academy's willingness to acknowledge it. Additionally, Asian artists have a harder time landing record deals. As American Idol alumni Paul Kim explained to The New York Times, he was blatantly told by industry execs he would have been signed to a label faster had he not been Asian.
By streaming these artists, you're not only supporting them and their art, but you're subsequently showing industry insiders just how valuable they are. Consider this list sonic proof Asian artists are making exceptional, diverse music that can't be boxed into one genre or sound. Each of these artists prides themselves on breaking boundaries and creating their own rules. You may have heard of a few, but many have been flying under the radar for far too long. Your ears will thank you soon enough.
Melissa Polinar
Polinar got her start in the late 2000s when viral YouTube covers paved the way for success. While artists like Justin Bieber and Lennon & Maisy were sharing music covers, Polinar focused on posting her original music — and her soulful vocals were a hit. In 2019, the Filipino-American songwriter actually re-recorded one of the songs that propelled her career forward, "Try," on its 10-year anniversary.
Eric Nam
Born and raised in Atlanta, Nam moved to Korea to pursue music because he felt he had a better chance of succeeding there. “Even if you look at American Idol, or X-Factor, or The Voice or anything, it was always difficult to see an Asian or an Asian-American make it to a certain point,” Nam told TIME in November 2019. Today, Nam is a highly visible and respected name in the K-pop industry. While he's very proud of his K-pop success, he considers himself a pop singer first. He hopes to grow his success stateside and told TIME, "I want people to hear my music and say, 'I don’t know who this person is,' and I could be Black, white, Latino, Asian — it doesn’t matter, but it’s just a great pop song."
Clinton Kane
Kane's got every making of a great singer-songwriter, and his lyricism will make a fan out of loyal Ed Sheeran or Sam Smith listeners. The Filipino-American singer's impressive vocal range captivates, and his emotion-driven lyrics will melt your heart. One of his more popular tracks, "Chicken Tendies," has upwards of 2 million views and is a must-add to your heartbreak playlist.
Jhené Aiko
As a mixed-race Japanese, Creole, Dominican, and European woman, Aiko has proudly championed her diverse roots throughout her accomplished career. The R&B singer is a six-time Grammy-nominated artist and is well respected within the industry for her philanthropic endeavors. She launched the WAYS foundation in 2017, an organization dedicated to helping cancer patients and their families.
Steve Aoki
Steve Aoki is hardly a newcomer to the EDM scene, but as one of the most prominent DJs in the industry, and one of the biggest Japanese DJs ever, it would be a crime to leave him off this list. Aoki even has his own record label and, in 2016, Netflix released I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, a documentary about his career.
Karen O
As the lead singer for the rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O has solidified her spot as a rock music legend. Not only is the Korean-American singer's discography with the band a must-listen for any rock music fan, but her 2019 album with Danger Mouse, Lux Prima, earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance.
H.E.R.
Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, H.E.R. (aka Gabi Wilson) has become one of the most prominent names in R&B. At just 23 years old, the singer-songwriter already has four Grammy wins and 13 nominations. Along the way, she's never shied away from praising her Filipino mother and Black father, Agnes and Kenny Wilson, for giving her the unique perspectives that propelled her musical success.
Toro Y Moi
Toro Y Moi is actually one person (Chaz Bear) and he's become the unofficial king of chillwave. Born to a Filipino mother, the South Carolina native later relocated to California to further his music career. If you need some chill vibes on your playlist, Bear's got you covered.
Ruby Ibarra
Ibarra is a Filipino-American rapper from San Lorenzo, California who also dabbles in spoken word poetry. Her music is meaningful in more ways than one. A number of her songs touch upon her experience as an Asian American woman. In April 2021, she released a powerful song and video called "Gold" with Ella Jay Basco, which exposed the harmful effects of the skin whitening industry.
Ella Jay Basco
You may recognize Basco from her appearance in Birds of Prey, but her music is not to be slept on because it's making major waves. Her song "Gold" with Ruby Ibarra highlights her Filipino heritage. As she told People, "From top to bottom, we wanted to make sure that our Asian-American community was represented with this project."
Mitski
Meet your new favorite alt-rock queen. Mitski's dreamy melodies appeal to the indie-rock crowd more than anything, and, if you're a sucker for a sad bop, this Japanese-American songstress has plenty of those stacked up.
Yaeji
Yaeji was born in Flushing, Queens in 1993 and grew up between the U.S. and Korea. Since she moved around so much as a kid, she found friendship on the internet, where she first connected with the bossa nova, jazz, and Korean indie music that drove much of the Korean DIY scene. She soon returned to the States to attend college, where she discovered a love for producing and DJing. Now, she meticulously blends hip-hop elements with her house-driven sound for a listening experience that is unlike anything else.
Hayley Kiyoko
Kiyoko has been given the nickname Lesbian Jesus since she’s so outspoken about LGBTQ+ representation in the music industry. The Japanese-American singer is a true trailblazer and her pop music genius has landed her hits with Kehlani, MAX, and AJR.
Jay Park
Park is an industry heavyweight. The Seattle native got his start in the K-pop industry as part of the band 2PM, but he went solo in 2009. Today, not only does the star have dozens of hits under his belt, but he has two record labels of his own that specialize in R&B and hip-hop music: AOMG and H1ghr. Park uses his superstar status to give others the spotlight, and he's put his support behind other artists like GOT7's JAY B and Yugyeom, and Raz Simone. Whether you're a self-proclaimed K-pop stan, or you're just recently getting acquainted with the genre, Park's discography is required listening.
Jin Au-Yeung
Born and raised in North Miami Beach, Florida, the Chinese-American rapper, aka MC Jin, has some seriously impressive accolades under his belt. After becoming popular among his musical peers for his epic freestyles, he was signed to Ruff Ryders in 2002 at just 19 years old, becoming the first Asian American solo rapper to be signed to a major record label in the U.S. He's since parted ways with the label and now travels back and forth between the U.S. and Hong Kong, seeing success in both places. In May 2021, the rapper released a single called "Stop the Hatred" with Wyclef Jean to raise awareness about hate crimes toward Asian Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Olivia Rodrigo
Rodrigo needs no introduction, but I'll do it anyway: This Filipino-American actress-turned-singer-songwriter's mega-hit debut single "drivers license" was unavoidable in January 2021. Its heartbreakingly relatable lyrics about a crush moving on with someone else struck listeners to their core and immediately soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also went viral on TikTok, before making its way into a Saturday Night Live sketch. Rodrigo's songwriting skills have fans likening her to industry heavyweights like Taylor Swift, so it's no surprise her debut album, Sour, is one of the most highly-anticipated albums of summer 2021.
Run River North
Run River North is not just one musician, but three. The band formerly known as Monsters Calling Home is an indie rock band from Los Angeles. The group has an eclectic sound that draws inspiration from each member: Daniel Chae, Alex Hwang, and Sally Kang.
ZHU
When ZHU first entered the electronic music scene, he used an alias and remained anonymous. By 2014, the artist also known as Steven Zhu was ready to share his identity with the world. ZHU got his start in San Francisco, California, but has made his mark on the EDM scene globally.
Darren Criss
Criss rose to fame starring on the television series Glee and he's since proven himself to be a true triple threat. His work can be seen across TV, film, and music. In September of 2018, Criss became the first Filipino-American to win an Emmy in the lead actor category for his portrayal of Andrew Cunanan in FX's The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. He’s also got several full-fledged EPs under his belt.
Amber Liu
Amber Liu (also known mononymously as Amber) is of Taiwanese descent and grew up in Los Angeles. She made a big splash when debuting as a member of the K-pop girl group f(x) in September 2009, but has since gone solo. Her 2019 solo track "Other People" racked up millions of streams, and she’s gearing up to drop her first album of 2021, called y?, very soon. In the meantime, she’s continuing to grow her superstar following on social media, where she has 5 million Instagram followers and over 2.3 million on Twitter.

Some Albums I Like pt. 2 (2001-2020)
Ahh, the 21st century. Full of shitty music. Full of some good music too.
2001, Lateralus by TOOL: Maynard James Keenan’s voice makes you really want to understand whatever the fuck he’s saying in some of these songs. Because if you’re gonna get a crash course about Kabbalah from any record, it might as well be one this good.
2001, White Blood Cells by the White Stripes: This is the rock for college students to listen to on their way to their minimum wage job.
2003, Dopesmoker by Sleep: Yes, I know this record technically came out in 1998 as Jerusalem. But the 63 minute and 36 second long title track may just be what pushes me to break sobriety.
2005, I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning by Bright Eyes: In a post-Elliot Smith world, we still need tortured indie rock and tortured indie rock stars.
2005, Demon Days by Gorillaz: Three imaginary boys…and an imaginary girl as well. Not nearly as depressing as Smith’s debut though.
2006, Hell Hath No Fury by Clipse: What the title doesn’t tell you is that they stole all Hell’s fury and put it on this album.
2006, Donuts by J Dilla: Show love to the producers, kids. I wish he was still around to receive some love.
2008, 808s and Heartbreak by Kanye West: I loathe Kanye West for his arrogance and idiocracy. He might as well walk around with his arms given how often he shoves his feet in his mouth. I like this album because it barely sounds like Kanye West.
2008, Ninja Tuna by Mr. Scruff: The innocence that emanates from this album is enough to crack the tough shell of any music snob. The songs aren’t half bad either. Background music at it’s finest.
2009, The Suburbs by Arcade Fire: This album is a time machine. The sounds and flavors take me back to certain places and emotions. It’s intoxicating.
2010, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager by Kid Cudi: This record isn’t exactly a smash hit, but Mr. Mescudi is sincere and genuine. And some cuts on this LP truly feel like they’re on the cusp of greatness, and for that it’s wormed its way into my heart.
2012, The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do by Fiona Apple: The fact that I took the time to type this album’s ridiculously long title should be a testament to how much I like it.
2014, Run the Jewels II by Run The Jewels: Rarely is the sophomore album the best in an artist’s discography. But if there’s one word to describe El-P and Killer Mike, it’s definitely “rare.”
2015, To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar: An honest commentary on the inequity plaguing the U.S.A. Lamar is quick with his tongue and sharp with his mind.
2016, Teens of Denial by Car Seat Headrest: Indie rocker Will Toledo goes alt-rock because he can. Who are you to stop him? You still listen to The Lumineers.
2016, Blonde by Frank Ocean: One track made me cry. The rest of it was capable of far worse.
2017, Capacity by Big Thief: If every human had a voice like Adrianne Lenker, then I’d day at least 80% of current global issues wouldn’t exist.
2017, DAMN. by Kendrick Lamar: Wrath and frustration given sound. Lamar is shouting into the void and he demands an answer.
2017, Big Fish Theory by Vince Staples: I don’t like calling Vince Staples “experimental.” It would imply that what he’s doing isn’t natural for him.
2019, When I Get Home by Solange: Solange Knowles answers the question: What kind of music does a deity make?
2020, How I’m Feeling Now by Charli XCX: This whole bubblegum bass scene may be a flash in the pan, but Ms. Aitchison is quite flashy.
2020, After Hours by The Weeknd: I used to think that he was just another melodramatic straight guy. Now I know that he is, but he seems to be more self aware than before.
2020, Spinnin’ by Bastards Of Soul: Old school sounds with a lovely modern twist. These guys are definitely bastards; forgotten sons of a bygone age.

Okay, so I warned you this was coming: I intentionally didn't mention Zoe in my post about Lin (age 17) because I wanted you to be the one to decide what their relationship looks like. I'm thinking Zoe ended up becoming a permanent member of the Casperan household shortly after Lin's adoption was made official, because Douxie wanted him to have a proper Mum (and he and Zoe were practically already married anyways by then). But apart from that, I don't know what Zoe's dynamic with Lin looks like.
The serotonin I am feeling tonight is REAL. Like I think my brain can’t handle the asks and now this, soooo lol. Stuff is under the cut bc it will probably get long.
Zoe has always been a bit more on the rebellious/hardcore punk side of things than Douxie has, and so when Lin starts displaying that very same headstrong behavior she has, she buckles down and tells Douxie to back off. She handles it supremely well.
Zoe is not exactly physically affectionate with him at first(as a baby) because she just,,, doesn’t ‘get’ kiddos yet? But as soon as she starts reading up on it and everything and how kids need it, you can bet she’s always dancing and playing with him (yknow how like throwing/spinning/physical play for kids around is good for motor development? Que Douxie on two hours of sleep walking in to find her tossing him up into the air- mind you Lin is cackling and all, thrilled -and just screeches)
“ZOE WHAT ARE YOU DOING PUT HIM DOWN YOU ARE GOING TO HURT HIM.”
“Douxie, hun, it’s called helping with mental development.”
Zoe wearing the baby in a baby pouch thing whenever Douxie isn’t(cuz lets face it, he wears the baby like 90% of the time)
Zoe is like,,, a soccer mom but in the best of ways. You don’t mess with her kid and she is hella supportive of him, no matter what.
The only reason Zoe is ever disappointed in him is that he never picked up on everything she taught him about fashion stuff and she tried so hard.
Every swear that Lin ever learned was from Zoe and it was not on purpose at all. (Zoe: you had better not tell your father I said that)
Zoe’s magic, being a hedgewitch and all, is also a bit more volatile and emotionally charged much like Lin’s, so she helps teach him how to control it and regulate his emotions in general.
She is all for letting him dye his hair, get piercings, wear whatever he wants, she really pushed the whole “he needs to develop his own personality thing” and she helped him dye his hair for the first time.
She taught him how to play the drums. Douxie took a short vacation(presumably with Archie) to save his eardrums.
She also taught Lin how to cook(and he loves it) because Douxie is a disaster cook and no adopted son of hers was going to get that trait.
Zoe has made all sorts of little magical toys for him in her free time and they’re his favorite things and he keeps them in a keepsafe box once he’s “grown out of them”
Lin gets his music taste from Zoe, he’s really into Indie/Folk and alt stuff, he doesn’t mind rock but it’s not quite his cup of tea.
Zoe convinces Douxie to join her in telling bedtime stories to Lin, but really, they’re just their adventures over the years with the bad parts taken out.
She sings old lullabies to baby Lin and Douxie is just floored by her voice(”Zoe I literally thought you could only scream song lyrics why didn’t tell me you could SING”)
Lin gets his sense of sarcasm from Zoe and at first Douxie goes up a wall because TWO Zoes sassing him is almost too much. Archie thinks it’s hilarious.
Bonus that mostly pertains to this particular topic: Lin’s first word was “kitty” and Archie was the first to hear it and he is so, so proud (he spent a whole afternoon trying to get Lin to say a bunch of words and settled on trying for “kitty”). Lin’s second word, much to Zoe and Douxie’s frustration and amusement, was a swear, courtesy of Zoe letting it slip when she burned herself cooking.)
ANYWAYS this was soooo much funnnnnnn ahhhhhhh I love this too muchhhh.

Bayleigh Cheek
Dallas native Bayleigh Cheek began her love affair with music at an early age thanks to her immersive upbringing. Both parents were in the music scene, exposing her to a variety of sounds ranging from psychedelic and folk to progressive rock and new wave. Some of her personal music influences include Patti Smith, P.J. Harvey, Radiohead, and Angel Olsen. Those influences led to the creation of her EP, Immortals, that was self-released in early 2020 which brought her DOMA nominations for Best New Artist and Best EP. Her latest single is ‘Release Me’. "This song is about what it means to realize you've believed a lie, or false identity of yourself, and the process of becoming free from it and knowing the truth,” explains Bayleigh. “Growing up listening to a range of genres, from psychedelic and folk to progressive rock and new wave, ‘Release Me’ opened my eyes to the world of synths and everything electronics can provide to create a whole new universe of sound. Taking something seemingly fun and cheerful on the outside, and revealing something deeper on the inside. Before I started writing my upcoming debut album, I decided to be more vulnerable, honest and raw. I've hidden behind surrealism, which is still a big part of my art and always will be, but in light of the pandemic, I felt I needed to really let myself be open and not hide anymore. I'm becoming the person I've always wanted to become, and art will always be there as gentle reminders." Listen below.

Cozy Slippers
Cozy Slippers have released their first new music since 2019’s single ‘A Million Pieces’ b/w ‘Will You Disappear?’ (Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten) and the band’s tour of the United Kingdom. Like everyone else, the Seattle indie band had to adapt to the challenges of 2020 and beyond. ‘When Will When Come?’ is the first release to come from a year’s worth of home recordings done by the band. “We started from scratch. We didn’t have any gear and hadn’t really thought about recording ourselves before. It was so great to escape the stressful outside world for a while by recording and meeting on Zoom to put it all together,” explains vocalist and bassist Sarah Engel. While the band couldn’t be in the same room at the same time, they made use of samples from their prior recordings in order to stamp their sound and personality on the song. “We did whatever we could to get this thing recorded. Some of the vocals I recorded into my phone while sitting alone in my car or late at night when everybody else was asleep. It was a challenge to find space to be creative and alone time to make the recording happen during the past year,” remembers drummer and vocalist Barbara Barrilleaux. The track was mixed by Dylan Wall (Versing, Great Grandpa, and High Sunn).  Lyrically, ‘When Will When Come?’ is a plea from one person to another to embrace life’s messy possibilities -- to live before it is too late. Instead of participating in their own life, the subject of the song stares out a window and fantasizes about pink flamingos.  “I remember the first time I heard Sarah singing the lyrics. I thought the idea of somebody daydreaming about traveling to see flamingos was weirdly sad. Flamingos look cool, but the world has a lot of other things I’d want to see before a bunch of birds. It seemed poignant to have such a relatively small wish and still be unwilling to make it reality,” recalls guitarist Steven Skelton. Listen below.

Everstill
New York-based alternative rock band Everstill have released ‘In Your Dreams,’ their first single off their debut album, Longing. Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sara Aridi (vocals, bass, guitars, keys) weaves her melodic guitars and haunting vocal harmonies with percussionist Luca Bertaglia’s pulsating drums to evoke sounds that are at once melancholic and euphoric. The group draws from disparate influences and genres including grunge, indie rock, jazz, metal, folk and more. ‘In Your Dreams,’ recalls artists like Warpaint, Wolf Alice and Chelsea Wolfe. Aridi wrote the song — something of a seductive plea to an unknowing crush — in 2015. A year later she met Bertaglia while playing in an alt-prog band, and the pair reconnected in early 2020 to bring her songs to life. They found themselves working on their debut album during the pandemic. Listen to ‘In Your Dreams’ below.

No Lore
No Lore is unlike any other indie alt-pop duo. It all started when Manila-based visual artist Tita Halaman decided to make music out of her paintings and poetry with her brother Jerald. As an artist, she wants to elevate her audience’s experience by expounding the message of her paintings through the art of words and sound. No Lore’s goal is to continuously release a new song with a painting every month and to publish a book out of it. The band name No Lore comes from the concept of having no formal studies in visual art, music, and poetry. Both Tita Halaman and Jerald are self-taught and everything is D.I.Y. from ideation to audio and video production. New single ‘With Little Light’ is “a song about courage,” explains Tita. “I believe there is no such thing as complete darkness to a soul that thrives to seek for “light” everywhere. With all that’s happening these days, I hope that we can still see hope no matter how little it may seem. Hope prevails if we believe. I’m a visual artist here in the Philippines and my signature style is writing poems at the back of my paintings,” she continues of her creative process. “On top of that, me and my brother Jerald are also into music - we’ve been playing together and learning different instruments since we were kids. No Lore is our attempt to create a layered expression of our emotions. I’d say our songs are my art and poetry, but in sonic form. Every song is inspired by a specific painting of mine and the latter serves as the former’s cover art.” Listen to ‘With Little Light’ below.
Another Nguyen
Ngoc-Anh is a Vietnamese German independent artist from Berlin performing under the name Another Nguyen. She has just released her new single ‘My Friend’ which was entirely written, produced, mixed and mastered by women. She says of the song: “I wrote this song after a friend of mine opened up to me that her long-term partner was physically abusive towards her. Hearing her story was shocking because I had always perceived them as a very happy couple. With this song I want to tell my friend and anyone who has experienced intimate partner violence that "I see you" and "You are not alone". Listen below.

Noni A.
‘20s’ is the new single from the Berlin-based artist Noni A. Written in her bedroom and turned into a chill pop production by her brother, ‘20s’ talks about the aspects in your twenties that happen in the background but are not often addressed. 21-year-old singer-songwriter Noni A was born and raised in Prague in a German-Greek household. In 2020 Noni A. released her debut single ‘Losing Game’, an acoustic pop ballad. Currently based in Berlin, Noni dives into a different sonic direction in her new music. Inspired by the sound of Jeremy Zucker, Audrey Mika and Quinn XCII, Noni A. blends emotionally honest and unreserved lyrics with a clean and minimalist chill pop production. With her new single ‘20s’, Noni A. takes a new sonic direction. '20s' dives into the chill pop scene, including lo-fi elements, more samples, underlined by a strong beat. "I walked into my kitchen one evening and had absolutely no motivation to clean it,” says Noni A. “Apparently when you’re 20 that becomes a regular activity (cheers to my mom for letting me live blissfully unaware of this and cleaning up my stuff too). This realisation of my day-to-day life as a 20-something-year-old turned into the inspiration of '20s'. This song talks about all those things that everyone experiences in their twenties that happen in the background of our lives: moving out of your hometown, adjusting to life on your own, procrastinating (if you say you don't procrastinate, stop lying) and learning how to use your washing machine (in my opinion a straight-up mystery)." Listen below.

Chrissie Huntley
One of Bristol’s most promising new artists, Chrissie Huntley has released her brand new single, ‘Supposed to Be’. Huntley decided to use the time granted by national lockdowns to her advantage. Collaborating with musicians across the globe and transforming her closet into a home studio, Chrissie has spent the past year equipping herself with a brand new body of work to return to the stage with later in 2021. ‘Supposed to Be’ is the first of a series of single releases set for release this year, and is one that the Brit School graduate holds close to her heart: “‘Supposed to Be’ is one of the first songs I ever wrote when I was a teenager and I just got dumped by the guy who I thought was supposed to be “the one”. I think we’ve all been in that position where you know that it’s over, but you just want to hold on and pretend just a little while longer…” Recorded in Bristol with upcoming songwriter and producer Laurence Fazakerley Buglass, the track demonstrates why Chrissie’s effortless vocals have had such an effect on her audience to date. Working with rising producers Jon Will, Gabriel Gifford (Harvey Causon, Maya Law, Lucy Lu) and Peter Beckmann (Gregory Porter, Laura Mvula, Marie Dahlstrom) to bring the song to life; ‘Supposed to Be’ is the perfect balance of collective ingenuity, creativity and talent...  mixed with the exposed, emotional honesty that comes with having your heart broken. “... It’s a very vulnerable track I suppose. It was very raw at the time of writing and I never had any intention of releasing it- it was more like a therapy to me than anything else. But, seven years later and here we are! Releasing this as an introduction to my new sound seemed like the perfect fit, as it holds the part of me that first turned to music at a time where I was struggling, which went on to become the entire premise of my musical journey..." Listen below.
Karen Harding
Weaving enchanting melodies straight from the heart, Karen Harding crafts, intimate heartfelt tracks that help us become ones with ourselves. The kind of one-to-one soul conversations that dig deep into our hearts and wake emotions once thought long gone. She specializes in helping people shed away their insecurities and finally feel again in a special moment of true authenticity. Drawing from a lifetime of experience, the Melbourne-based singer crafts bittersweet melodies that move and inspire. She gorgeously crafts an entire experience with every timeless track she creates. The emerging singer has just  released her debut track ‘I Didn’t Realise’. The heartbreak ballad talks on the struggle of an earth shatteringly painful breakup in a way so intimate it feels like we’re right there with her. It’s a reflective song that navigates us through every raw emotion during the healing process; from processing the pain to finally coming to terms with what’s happened. Truly a breath-taking journey that will leave you with a deep sense of wonder. The song was passionately penned in the peak of Covid-19 on a piano she played growing up. Like much of her music it came to her very organically. She had the chords already laid out and the words just flowed out of her soul naturally. It wasn’t created with the intention of being turned into a record. Rather it was a simple moment of self-expression based on the way she currently felt. The result is something deeply authentic that’s oozing in originality. She worked with acclaimed producer Josh Hennessy of Pivotal Music to bring the project to life. He helped add the magic to this simplistic yet innovative piano and vocal track. Listen below.

𝕄𝕒𝕥𝕔𝕙 𝕌𝕡♡
Hi hi! Could I please get a matchup for Haikyuu and Demon Slayer with male characters? I’m a female, 5'5", american with short (a bob almost) blonde hair and dark blue/grayish eyes. My personality type is INFP, however I am fairly extroverted as well so I would definitely say I’m an ambivert. I’m also a sagittarius and I relate a lot to my sign, I’m very adventurous, spontaneous at times. I love a good old midnight adventure. I’m also fairly blunt sometimes and tend to tell things how they are. I usually try to just keep my mouth shut though so I don’t offend or upset anyone. I will not be talked down to though and don’t like being disrespected, it makes me pretty angry. I can get a little fired up when people try to pull stuff like that and I’m not afraid to put someone in their place. While this may be the case, I rarely have issues like that and am usually seen as someone very kind. I’m a person that people feel like they can come to with their secrets and for advice even if they aren’t really close to me. I’m sorta the mom friend but I’m also the crackhead energy friend sometimes.
I grew up in a slightly more rural area of my city and would always be running around playing outside which is what I feel like helped contribute to my slightly “tomboyish” nature. So I enjoy doing things outside like hiking and kayaking. I also played soccer for 13 years, I loved and enjoyed the sport very much, I played for fun and on competitive travel teams until I graduated high school. Along with the “tomboyish” aspect, I have a bit of a mixed personality between boho hippy and alternative punk. I listen to a lot of punk, alt, and classic rock but also a lot of indie and other genres too. I feel like you can tell a lot by peoples music tastes. I’m a stoner and I like to just be chill and tend to just go with the flow of life. I don’t worry about things such as religion or politics and try to stay away from those topics cause I feel like people argue about them too much. I also have a fairly dirty mind and love dark humor, humor in general cause I love a good laugh. I’m also the “looks innocent but totally isn’t” type as well.
I’m about to go into my last year of university and I’ll be finishing with a marine biology degree and a french degree (I’ve been learning french since I was little) and then plan to continue to graduate school for marine biology so I can do research on sharks. I’m fairly dedicated to school and have very set goals, I can be hardworking when I need to be but I’m also a huge procrastinator just because I know I can get things done last minute. I enjoy spending my free time hanging out with friends, playing video games, and occasionally I love enjoying a good book. Overall I’m pretty bubbly and very open once people get to know me, I start off being a lil awkward just until I open up to people and I have a very all over the place taste in things. Sorry if this is a lot, THANK YOU <333 :’)

Chaotic yet cheerful and energetic Terushima~! I feel as though he’d match quite well with your adventurous attitude~! He loves going on spontaneous adventures with you and will definitely want to make every moment with you as memorable as possible~! He doesn’t mind that you’re blunt-- he actually lives for it! It honestly helps to keep him in line and he actually learns to not spazz out too much or be too careless. He tries to encourage you to speak up more though, he feels as though people should be able to state an opinion without malice involved. After all, if you’re confronted with a problem that you have it’s better to own up and change for the better!
He learned that the hard way after a match against Karasuno---  Terushima will be your biggest hype man. He’ll literally back you up if someone is out speaking out of line and honestly, if you don’t say something he might. He really enjoys going to you for advice, and even though he’s a chaotic man, he hopes that you can rely on him as someone who can be there for you during those hard times.
Terushima absolutely adores how laid back you can be and how you go with the flow of life. Despite what others may think of who he has interests in or what his type would be stereotyped as, he actually likes all types of people as long as they’re able to mingle with his personality well! He’s interested in your various styles and loves to listen to any music recommendation you give him! It’ll only serve more as a reminder of you whenever he listens to anything you recommend him. He absolutely loves your dirty mind, because he’s just as bad as you. His dark humor may not be the best, but he does find them appealing and honestly relatable!
With PDA, he’s super touchy. He loves to have you at least within arms length away because he’s honestly a clingy baby. He really loves to snuggle up to you and hold you close. His favorite thing to do is to lay in bed right before you both fall asleep and to just look at you before giving you cute Eskimo kisses. Despite being chaotic and loud, Tersuhima is a sucker for the soft moments.
ᴛᴀɴᴊɪʀᴏ ᴋᴀᴍᴀᴅᴏ
ON THE OPPOSITE END OF THE SPECTRUM, we have the sweet older brother figure~! Super understanding and patient and will undoubtedly go out on adventures with you if you ask him to go along with you! Though he’ll be a bit worried for the late night adventures, he steels his resolve and will honestly be a bit more protective of you in that case.
He thinks your honesty and blunt comments can be hurtful, but honestly needed. To him, there’s no point in trying to sugar coat something if it was clearly wrong, and loves it when you can help drop the bomb on someone who is clearly stepping out of line.
Much more of the peacemaker, he’ll try to also calm you down if someone is being disrespectful or rude to you. He wants the situation to de-escalate as quickly as possible because he knows acting on pure emotion alone can lead to very nasty memories and experiences. If anything, he’ll lecture the person and if they’re a lost cause he’s not even going to bother. It’s one thing to try and help, but if they’re clearly being ignorant and biased to their own opinions he sees no point in wasting time or air on someone like that and will most likely take you away and treat you while letting you rant and vent about the person.
Similar to you, Tanjiro grew up in a rural area. He loves your personality and doesn’t really see it as the stereotypes that people label things. He honestly sees it as you being a kid who wanted to have fun in her own way. He definitely gets curious about your music tastes and will always lend an ear to any recommendation or if you want a listening partner!
He gets quite flustered at your dirty mind and will always turn beet red at any sort of innuendo which is charming in it’s own way. He tries to do the same but ends up too flustered and shy to even continue. Though on the flip side, he’s very confident with PDA! Much to Zenitsu’s surprise of course. He will gently hold your hand, or guide you around the town with his arm lightly wrapped around your waist while he smiles sweetly at you. Maybe even sneak in a little kiss or two when it’s not too crowded~

@thewinterose made some headcanons about the main gang’s movie tastes and made me wonder about music tastes!! so here goes:
tohru: mix of pop and soft 80′s folk rock. she likes feel-good music to bop to, but i see her also returning to the softer music that her mom might have listened to (which, kyoko’s music taste wasn’t entirely soft... i bet she would have liked the misfits as a kid lol). she sometimes listens to music while doing homework, so the guys sometimes hear what she’s into.... but she doesn’t play it very loud, because she can’t concentrate much when it is! hums to herself a lot, kind of sings bits and pieces of songs she likes while she’s cleaning. also loves disney songs let’s be real. loves love songs in general!
carly rae jepsen / suzanne vega / simon & garfunkel / ingrid michaelson
shigure: 80′s pop/rock, but really anything that he finds easy to hang out and have fun to. i don’t see him being into anything really loud or heavy or flashy -- unless it’s to annoy hatori or the boys, in which case he has no qualms about blasting some ke$ha or miley (which he really only knows about because of uo and hana hanging out with tohru... he overheard “tik tok” once and went “hmm :)”). i could see him liking something more modern like vampire weekend, too -- still in the realm of fun and easy, but with a lot of fun wordplay.
wham! / toto / vampire weekend / animal collective
yuki: soft indie rock. he doesn’t really have any preferences for a while, since he didn’t really listen to music as a kid -- he has a lot of quiet time outside of school (gardening, studying, all that), so he doesn’t really think about it. kakeru’s the one to push him into figuring out what he likes, if only because yuki mostly hates the music kakeru listens to (which i’ll get to eventually, but i see it as being more on the hard rock/punk side of things lmao). likes music that tends towards being instrumentally soft or chill but really emotive in its lyrics and vocals. no one really knows what he’s into because he’ll just lay in bed with his headphones on listening to it in peace.
japanese breakfast / mitski / laura stevenson / andrew bird
kyo: indie/alt rock and lofi hip-hop. he’s a hard one to pin down because i don’t think he really gives a damn about music when he’s younger; he’s a minimalist. definitely one of those types to work out in silence. i think he picked up on some music from haru, which tended more towards alt rock and metal (coldplay, three days grace, u know), but curating his own preferences took a while. i think as a teen he just needs some music he can get emo to -- those sad indie rock ballads about feeling worthless. when he gets older and chills out though, i like the idea of him getting into lofi hip-hop... something he can really just relax and take a nap or something to lmao.

RIP Ric Ocasek 1944-2019
This one hurts! Musician, singer, songwriter, producer, artist and music legend Ric Ocasek has died at 75.
Here is the obit from Rolling Stone.
Tumblr media
Let me begin this obit by saying his band The Cars were one of the greatest bands of all time - hands down. They were music video pioneers with their ground breaking music videos, rock legends, performers at Live Aid and 2018 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
youtube
When I was a little kid just learning about music, The Cars’ music video for “You Might Think” was one of the early music videos I took a shine to. I thought it was so cool to learn that they were from the Boston area, where I was growing up at the time. That video ended up winning the very first Video of the Year award at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards.
Tumblr media
I soon got into The Cars. Their 1985 Greatest Hits album was one of my faves. The band’s mixture of new wave, synth-pop, and rock was so hooky and infectious. They had countless hits and even after the band’s 1988 breakup, they became a staple of classic rock radio. To this day, so many of their hits are in constant rotation. In the years that followed, I got into many of their albums including The Cars and Heartbeat City.
youtube
Its important to note that Ocasek also released several highly underrated solo albums. One of my faves of his was 1986′s This Side of Paradise. “Emotion in Motion” is Power Pop Gold!
Tumblr media
He even did some acting, including his cameo as the beatnik in John Waters’ Hairspray.
Tumblr media
The Cribs with Ocasek and Dave Grohl
By the 90s alt-rock boom, bands like Smashing Pumpkins (who covered “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight”), Nirvana (who covered “My Best Friend’s Girl” live), Letters to Cleo (who covered “Dangerous Type”), Foo Fighters (who covered “Let’s Go” when I saw them at Fenway Park in 2015) and Nine Inch Nails (who recorded at The Cars’ Synchro Sound studio) embraced their love of The Cars. So it made perfect sense that Ocasek soon became an in-demand music producer. I loved several of the albums he produced, including Weezer’s Blue Album, Hole’s “Gold Dust Woman” and No Doubt’s Rock Steady just to name a few.
Tumblr media
In the mid-00s, I helped my good friend Memo Salazar out with a indie music biopic spoof about The Cars he was making with comedian David Juskow. The film Turbocharge: The Unauthorized Story of The Cars was taking The Cars story and telling it as a goofy comedy. I helped out as a crew member and an extra on a few occasions, I even got to act in a scene with Dave Attell when I played his cameraman. Juskow played Ocasek in the film.
Around 2009, when I was making my documentary about Boston’s 1980s music video TV stations V66, it was important to me to have The Cars represented. We interviewed Cars keyboardist Greg Hawkes. I was truly honored to have him in my doc. There is a segment in my doc about The Cars’ popularity on V66 too. Over the years, several Cars fanatics checked out my doc just because of The Cars and Mr. Hawkes. I’ve gotten tweets from tons of hardcore Cars fans who have been super supportive of my doc.
youtube
After Ben Orr passed away in 2000, it was questionable if The Cars would ever reunite, but then it happened in 2011. The reunion album Move Like This was really good. It’s like they hadn’t changed at all in 23 years. Now I am kicking myself for not seeing them on that 2011 tour when I should have. In 2018, the band was inducted into the Rock Hall and they even performed. Nice to see that Ocasek got to be inducted. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018 when they were inducted.
Tumblr media
Thoughts go out to Mr. Hawkes and his bandmates at this time. RIP Ric!

The best songs of the 2010s: #100-76
Happy 2020! Now that the previous decade has finally finished, it’s time to commemorate the 2010s. The decade in which I grew from an awkward teen to an awkward adult. And a decade with a ton of great music. Let’s dive right in: these are my 100 favorite songs of the 2010s.
Tumblr media
#100: “Monopoly” by Danny Brown (2011)
Danny Brown is so delightfully grimy. He’s like a cartoon sewer rat come to life, rapping about pills and making hilariously crude jokes. In an anti-drug PSA, he’d be the sketchy weirdo trying to get a kid hooked on bath salts or whatever. And for a quick shot of his non-replicable style, it’s hard to do better than “Monopoly.”
Rapping over a glitchy, menacing beat with his trademark squawk, Brown lands oddball punchline after oddball punchline. In a span of less than 3 minutes, he threatens to defecate on your tape (and he has to clarify that too — “No, literally, shit all on your mixtape”), compares himself to Ferris Bueller sipping wine coolers and then closes his track by describing a woman’s vagina as “smellin’ like cool ranch Doritos.” And that last insult is the perfect distillation of Brown: the Adult Swim of rap. But much smarter than that would imply.
Tumblr media
#99: “Shutdown” by Skepta (2015)
At the 2015 BRIT Awards, Kanye West performed “All Day” with a massive crowd of grime artists on stage, all in black, with flamethrowers shooting fire into the sky.
Four days after the performance, Skepta — one of the artists on stage with Kanye — released “Shutdown.” It’s a much more fitting song for the intimidating, energized and proudly British crowd of MCs than a middling Kanye non-album cut.
“Shutdown” is the kind of song a rapper releases when they’re at the peak of their powers. Skepta was absolutely at that point in 2015, and so his finest single sounds like a coronation. His gruff delivery isn’t too loud, but it’s firm and confident. He knew he was the best MC in Britain, and “Shutdown” cemented that status.

#98: “Amor Fati” by Washed Out (2011)
Washed Out was one of the brightest voices in the turn-of-the-decade chillwave movement, and with cuts like “Amor Fati,” it’s not hard to see why.
The big single off his debut, “Amor Fati” gives you a similar sensation as taking a shower: Pure bliss and warmth cascade around you. It’s a bit repetitive, but the song is clearly meant to set a mood more than anything else, so that’s excusable. If you need an entry point into chillwave, you can’t do much better than this.

#97: “Los Ageless” by St. Vincent (2017)
St. Vincent’s trajectory this decade took her from an art-pop weirdo who collaborates with David Byrne to a more mainstream art-pop weirdo who collaborates with Taylor Swift. But in that process, Annie Clark was able to pull her sharpest hooks out and put them in use in deceptively dark songs like “Los Ageless.”
With its sleek new wave production from Jack Antonoff, “Los Ageless” could’ve easily fit on most pop records. But Clark’s atonal, shrill guitar bursts and increasingly disturbing lyrics differentiate it. The song’s themes gradually shift from “lol Los Angeles is fake and plastic” to something more tragic. The desperate (in a good way) chorus says it all: “How could anybody have you and lose you/And not lose their minds too?”

#96: “I Like It” by Enrique Iglesias feat. Pitbull (2010)
I’m aware how ridiculous putting “I Like It” — a disposable, trashy club pop hit most people might not remember — on this list. Admitting I that I love this song probably guarantees that I’ll never get a job at Pitchfork.
But then those fuzzy, cheap synths come crashing in. And Enrique Iglesias sings his sleazy come-ons in an auto-tune slurry. And Pitbull delivers a gloriously ridiculous, very-2010 verse that references both the Tiger Woods cheating scandal AND the Obamas (along with gratuitous Spanish and a Miami shoutout). And then there’s the final touch: a prominent sample of Lionel Richie’s cheeseball classic “All Night Long.” It’s too much to resist.
What can I say? “I Like It” hits all the pleasure centers (including nostalgia, seeing as it came out in the middle of my high school tenure) in my brain. It’s a beautifully stupid, hedonistic highlight of the 2009-12 pop golden age.

#95: “The Wire” by HAIM (2013)
Retro-pop standard bearers HAIM had plenty of great singles this decade. But one of their first, the groovy breakup anthem “The Wire,” is still their best.
Unlike many most breakup anthems, which tend to be wildly emotional, “The Wire” is matter-of-fact. The relationship simply isn’t working, and it’s time to end it. That’s that. You’re going to be okay.
The verging-on-curt lyrics mixed with the Haim sisters’ groovy early ‘80s rhythm makes for a pop jam that’s perfect for any “It’s not you, it’s me” moment in your life.

#94: “Helena Beat” by Foster The People (2011)
I know they represent the mainstream selling-out moment of the magical late-’00s MGMT/Passion Pit/Phoenix moment, but I have a soft spot for Foster The People. Their debut album, Torches, might not have much indie cred, but it’s all-killer-no-filler and stuffed with monster hooks. And despite “Pumped Up Kicks” being the big hit, I’ve always preferred the album’s opening track, “Helena Beat.”
With its shuffling disco beat and Mark Foster’s piercing falsetto, “Helena Beat” is likely about as close as alt-rock ever got to the Bee Gees. The lyrics, which tackle addiction, are much darker than “Staying Alive,” but it’s got a similar sense of propulsion.
And let’s not forget — Foster wrote jingles before starting a band, so he can get melodies stuck in your head. And once you’ve heard “Helena Beat,” good luck getting it unstuck.

#93: “Redbone” by Childish Gambino (2016)
“Redbone” might be the smoothest R&B cut on this list. Which is why the song’s sense of dread and paranoia makes it stand out.
Donald Glover’s scratchy, passionate falsetto isn’t conventionally pretty, but it works well while singing about some unknown boogieman who’s “creeping.” That’s why “Redbone” was a perfect fit for Get Out, because of its lurking dread underneath the comfortable exterior. This is the song that cemented Glover as being a true renaissance man, rather than an actor with a weird musical side project.
(of course, this still isn’t Glover’s greatest musical contribution — that would be the iconic “Troy and Abed in the Morning” jingle. Especially the night variant.)

#92: “Do You” by Spoon (2014)
Spoon has been America’s most consistently great rock band for the past two decade now. Even calling them “consistent” is practically a cliché.
So all you need to know about “Do You” is that it’s another solid Spoon song in a vast catalog of Spoon songs. Lead singer Britt Daniel is still effortlessly cool, the guitar-driven groove is simple and it all goes down easy. By 2014, Spoon had nothing left to prove, except how long they could keep up their streak.

#91: “I’m Not Part of Me” by Cloud Nothings (2014)
Cloud Nothings’ finest moment is four and a half minutes of pure angst and crunchy guitars. Squint hard enough, and “I’m Not Part of Me” is one of the closest approximations to ‘90s alt-rock. And while the Ohio band isn’t necessarily reinventing the wheel here, refining what made past music so great can be just as effective.

#90: “Hello” by Adele (2015)
Despite only releasing two albums this decade, Adele casts a major shadow over the 2010s. Although I find both those records to be a little on the bland side, there’s a reason she was/is a juggernaut. And the example of her prowess is “Hello.”
“Hello” has everything you’d want in an Adele song: It’s about not getting over a breakup, a very relatable topic, and Adele gets to show off her cannon of a voice. But it also has a secret weapon compared to other Adele ballads: ‘80s power-ballad production! The bombastic chorus has more in common with Heart’s “Alone” than any of Adele’s previous hits, and it’s a perfect accompaniment to one of the decade’s most melodramatic singles.

#89: “Slumlord” by Neon Indian (2015)
Despite putting out two essentially perfect albums this decade, Neon Indian’s mastermind, Alan Palomo, doesn’t really have that one mind-melting single. Yes, “Polish Girl” was a decent-sized indie hit, but it’s nowhere near his best.
But “Slumlord” comes damn close to perfection. It’s not quite as heavy on the melted-VCR aesthetic of other songs on Palomo’s best album, Vega INTL. Night School, but it makes up for that with an irrepressible ‘80s techno groove. “Slumlord” is one of those songs that could ride its beat forever — and it kind of does, with the “Slumlord’s Re-lease” coda following it on the album. It’s a nocturnal synthpop jam that even those allergic to keyboards couldn’t resist.

#88: “The Bay” by Metronomy (2011)
While most synth-weilding indie acts were trying to ape MGMT’s high-pitched fever dreams in the early ‘10s, Metronomy decided on a different, sleeker path with their 2011 album The English Riviera. That album’s best single, “The Bay,” is an immaculate blend of silky smooth yacht rock and nervy, tense new wave. Those two opposite styles shouldn’t work together, but Metronomy managed to pull it off regardless, creating the perfect beach anthem for awkward hipster Brits.

#87: “bad guy” by Billie Eilish (2019)
I expect the 17-year-old Eilish will likely be remembered more as an icon of the 2020s than the 2010s, as she has a long and promising career ahead of her. It’s like how Lady Gaga is much more of a figure of this decade, despite her earliest hits arriving in 2009. But “bad guy” — the kind of left-field, innovative pop single that signals a new era — came out in 2019. And it’s too damn weird, catchy and just plain fun to leave off this list.

#86: “Latch” by Disclosure feat. Sam Smith (2012)
It’s a bummer that Sam Smith turned out to be such a bore, because “Latch” — his introduction to the world — is pure electricity.
Smith and fellow Brits Disclosure, who provide the pulsating, sensual production, were a dream team on “Latch.” All Disclosure needed to do was give Smith plenty of room to unleash his golden pipes, complete with a few futuristic touches. Smith delivered on his end, proving his worth as one of the best vocalists for conveying drama on the dancefloor.

#85: “Need You Now” by Cut Copy (2011)
No, it’s not a cover of the Lady Antebellum hit of the same name.
There were plenty of ‘80s-inspired epic synthpop bangers this decade; some groups made their entire careers off of them. But what sets Cut Copy’s “Need You Now” above the rest is its sense of patience. It’s an incredibly slow burner, building the tension with a thumping beat and calm vocals until it all explodes with a dazzling climax nearly 5 minutes in. Af that moment, the Aussies fulfill their promise with a euphoric release of synths and thundering drums.
It’s not a complicated concept for a song, but Cut Copy executed it perfectly.

#84: “The Mother We Share” by CHVRCHES (2013)
Glasgow new wave trio CHVRCHES never really lived up to their promising 2013 debut album, which opened with the anthemic “The Mother We Share.” But man, what a way to start a career.
"The Mother We Share” is all icy synths and furious drum machines, the sounds bouncing off each other like a hall of mirrors. And lead singer Lauren Mayberry’s quiet but confident vocals add the necessary human touch, conveying a tragic feel to the song’s triumphant chorus.
Tumblr media
#83: “Night Shift” by Lucy Dacus (2018)
One of the most ferocious, biting breakup songs of the decade, “Night Shift” is a showcase for Lucy Dacus’ vivid storytelling. The Virginia singer-songwriter spends the first half the song setting the scene of a crappy ex trying to halfway make amends, while Dacus’ character holds herself back from lashing out. She saves the visceral emotion for the second half, when the grungy guitars kick in and Dacus lets out a wounded howl, proudly stating that “I’ll never see you again/If I can help it.” “Night Shift” is a tour de force of indie rock songwriting that rewards patience.

#82: “Round and Round” by Ariel Pink (2010)
Much of indie-rock trickster Ariel Pink is a little too jokey and off-putting for my taste. But on his defining single “Round and Round,” he sprinkled in just the right touch of weirdness into a song that otherwise could’ve been a massive easy-listening hit in 1980.
The quirks throughout “Round and Round” — the woozy, off-kilter production, the lyrics that seemingly make no sense, Pink answering his phone in the middle of the song — are enjoyable. But the song’s true strength is in its chorus: a sudden punch of roller-disco AM-lite harmonies that cut through all the song’s oddities. It’s a double-shot of warmth and nostalgic beauty that feels comfortingly familiar, yet still thrilling.
Pink seemed to know the chorus was the key to “Round and Round,” as he makes the listener wait nearly two minutes for it. But its inevitable release is a truly magical moment.

#81: “4th of July, Philadelphia (SANDY)” by Cymbals Eat Guitars (2016)
Heavily referencing an early Bruce Springsteen classic in the title of a song that sounds nothing like Springsteen is quite the flex. But New Jersey indie-rockers Cymbals Eat Guitars pulled it off regardless.
“4th of July” is a clanging, anthemic scuzz-rock track about going through an existential crisis in the middle of Independence Day. While everyone else is making plans for the holiday, lead singer and guitarist Joseph D’Agostino is howling away, “HOW MANY UNIVERSES AM I ALIVE AND DEAD IN?!?” It’s one of the hardest-rocking mental breakdowns put on record this decade.

#80: “I Like It” by Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin (2018)
Rapping over extremely-obvious samples has been a time-honored tradition in hip-hop, from the Beastie Boys trading verses over The Beatles to Puff Daddy jacking the chorus from one ‘80s hit and the beat from another in the same song.
But Cardi B, and reggaeton superstars Bad Bunny and J Balvin sampling the boogaloo classic “I Like It Like That” was an inspired choice. The trio’s verses are all delicious fun, whether they’re bragging about eating halal in a Lamborghini or referencing a classic Lady Gaga hit.
But that sample, combined with a trap beat and Cardi’s swaggering charisma powering the chorus, is what makes “I Like It” a classic.

#79: “Sign of the Times” by Harry Styles (2017)
Most former boy band members aim for a grown-and-sexy pop anthem once they go solo, whether its Jordan Knight, Justin Timberlake or Zayn Malik. But the standout member of the 2010s’ standout boy band, Harry Styles, chose took a sharp left turn into melodramatic classic rock instead. And it was a brilliant decision.
"Sign of the Times” is about as close to a classic Beatles or Queen power ballad we got this decade, with its clanging Western guitars, lush strings and thundering drum fills. Styles doesn’t have Freddie Mercury’s gravity-defying vocals, but his immense charisma powers the song anyways. It’s not 100% clear what “Sign of the Times” is about, but with its cinematic scope and cryptic lyrics, it’s likely about the apocalypse. And there’s not many superior songs to cry to while the bombs fall.

#78: “Dancing On My Own” by Robyn (2010)
The ultimate crying-on-the-dancefloor anthem, “Dancing On My Own” has already become a standard.
But Swedish alt-pop icon Robyn’s combination of icy synths and heartbroken, jealous lyrics can’t be replicated. Just ask Calum Scott, who slowed down the track into mushy, piano-ballad goop. Yikes.
What makes “Dancing On My Own” brilliant is its resiliency. It’s not a mopey song — Robyn is defiantly still grooving despite her crushed feelings. It’s a siren call for all those who have been hurt and know the only proper way to work out their emotions through cathartic dancing.

#77: “Trap Queen” by Fetty Wap (2015)
“Trap Queen” is an incredibly fun hip-hop banger, but I don’t think I can extoll its virtues quite as well as Fetty Wap’s hype man at the end of the track. So I’ll let him speak:
“YOU HEAR MY BOY SOUNDIN’ LIKE A ZILLION BUCKS ON THE TRACK?! I GOT WHATEVER ON MY BOY!!”
Amen. It’s a real shame Fetty wasn’t able to keep his momentum rolling past a big 2015, but at least we’ll always have the magic dying-walrus energy of “Trap Queen.” HEY WHAT’S UP HELLOOOOO

#75: “R U Mine?” by Arctic Monkeys (2012)
"R U Mine?” offers Arctic Monkeys fans the best of both worlds. On one hand, you have their AM-era slinky swagger. But it also retains the furious rock-n-roll energy of their early days.
Alex Turner sounds like a smooth-talkin’ cowboy here, but the music is anything but smooth. It hits like a semi-truck, with a calvary-charge guitar riff and so many thunderous drum fills you’d think you were listening to the E Street Band.
