And here we go again with the “I just can’t connect to Black characters 🥺” bs. Y’all don’t like Black ppl so that’s why you don’t like reading about us. No one cares if LegendBorn or Children of Blood and Bone are some of your favs, cuz what exactly is stopping you from finding books similar to them???? And then to say that Black authors should be more like Asian authors while also insinuating that we don’t have our own historical or cultural myths, especially when we exist on multiple continents and islands, is absolutely ludicrous. Not to mention that a statement like that feeds into racism and the fetishization of Asian ppl. Children of color are forced to see nothing but white ppl in every form of media all our lives and not once does not being able to connect to the characters stop us from enjoying that piece of media. You can empathize with dragons, elves, orcs, and witches easily. Anyone darker than dry glue however, needs to prove why you should read our stories and have sympathy for our characters. This is exactly why I don’t trust white readers regardless of if they read diversely or not cuz some of y’all don’t even read the books. You just get them for brownie points or judge them harshly cuz you still don’t see the characters as deserving of empathy.

Bro I hate fundamentalists and culturally-fundie parents they'll say shit like "spare the rod spoil the child am I right haha yea my parents used to have to beat my ass with a switch almost everyday but I sure did learn my lesson" but like??? no you didn't??? you were hit multiple times for something you very obviously did not, in fact, learn
Like studies about how harmful even lightly spanking children is aside, you're literally contradicting yourself?? Some even admitted they got worse as they got older cause they wanted to see how far they could push their parents before they got punished
And studies not aside, you're gonna get child raising advice from the same book that tells you to stone your wife if her hymen doesn't break on your wedding night instead of the decades of research we have now?? Just say you're a bad parent and move on my guy. Skill issue
#bro I had a coworker go 'unpopular opinion I think some kids really do need beatings' and I'm like????#unprompted???? what's going on there????#well anyways I ended up going 'yea so I plan on specializing in play therapy with autistic children so I've been learning about talking#to children and the ways their parents and environment affects them'#and they're like hmmm but beating this kid with a stick after they broke something or I upset them to the point of yelling is good actually#had a boss say it taught him and his kids respect cause they were hard-headed#and I'm like?? that's fear not respect! they fear punishment! they do not act out of respect for you!#he's a conservative christian black man tho so he's like 'But Authority!' like bro I don't even respect you what are you on about#'You don't respect police and their authority?' Nope! I fear them! I do not respect cops and every cop/cop-adjacent person I personally know#has reinforced that for me#'We'll agree to disagree' Cool! Doesn't mean you're not wrong! I could believe trees aren't real but that is in fact incorrect#then he pulled out the bible verse and I was like ah okay I forgot you like 'here's how to treat slaves' book you're so right bestie#I'm totally wrong now and so sorry for doubting you and your 2000+ year old book I don't believe in <3#They'd go 'well I turned out fine!' then say something that directly contradicts that#anyways I need christians to get their grubby little hands off the current state of Child Protection and Rights in the U.S.#So we can actually start working on helping kids without the force of christian hands suffocating them#cause homeschooling and child raising by evangelicals are so fucked up bro I'm tired of this shit#I'd only stay in my current state to help children get out of that cycle since I'm in the bible belt#ex christian#religious trauma#child abuse tw

Hi everyone! Since black history month is almost coming to an end (this does not mean we should stop celebrating and honoring the achievements of black Americans. We should continue to learn and educate ourselves). I thought I share one last book which caught my interest — In Your Hands by Carole Weatherford.
Tumblr media
In Your Hands • {Carole Weatherford | 2017}
In Your Hands is a 32-page picture book written by Carole Weatherford. The picture book was published in 2017 for young children between the ages of 4 - 8 years old.
In the picture book, the story begins by introducing a new mother, describing her hopes and dreams for her newborn son. The mother knows that as her child grows older, she won't be able to protect him from the all the dangers and difficulties from the world, so she sends prayers to god to protect her black son; this book sends a reminder that all lives matter, reinforcing the Black Lives Matter movement.
This picture book tells a powerful, heartwarming story which touches on important themes like motherly love, social justice issues like the Black Lives Matter movement and discrimination, the struggles and fears of people of color, and many more.
Overall, the picture book is accompanied by beautiful illustrations by Brian Pinkney. Pinkney's illustration was very captivating and somewhat abstract with the use of loose sketchy illustrations with the use of watercolor and gouache. Another thing I loved about Pinkney's illustrations is the dominant use of yellow, green and blue to symbolize the idea of hope.

“Following in the footsteps of other superstar athletes like Serena Williams and Stephen Curry, four-time major champion and former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka announced she would be releasing her first children's book with a post on Instagram on Tuesday. Titled "The Way Champs Play," the book is set to be released on Dec. 6 and, in an amazing flex, will be published by her production company Hana Kuma.”
Tumblr media
"I hope this book inspires kids to chase their dreams and encourages them to believe they can do anything they put their minds to," Osaka wrote about the project.”

Quote
I don't like the idea of children being treated as threats once they have a growth spurt, particularly young brown and black boys. It's insidious and I don’t know when it stops, but I hope it does soon because we're doing a great disservice to our young people when they recognize which lives have value in the news and in society and which lives are described as collateral damage.

Just wanted to say that it is alright to be fans of books like LegendBorn, Children of Blood and Bone, and Raybearer but if you are not Black you are not the targeted audience. They deserve your support but the author is not writing with a nonblack audience in mind. The same goes for other nonwhite authors no matter where they come from. Usually these authors are writing for themselves and ppl who look like them. Seeing ourselves is much more important than whether or not white readers like it.

As we continue to celebrate Black history month, this week I would like to share another one of my favorite picture book written by a brilliant black author. The book I would like to discuss this week is The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson.
Tumblr media
The Day You Begin • {Jacqueline Woodson | 2018}
The Day You Begin is a 32-page picture book written by Jacqueline Woodson. The picture book was published in 2018, and it is a number one New York Times bestseller for young children between the ages of 5 - 8 years old.
The Day You Begin tells the story of celebrating everyone's diversity within the classroom; each person comes from a different background and experiences, in which everyone can learn from each other by sharing their stories. This is illustrated in the picture book when the readers meet Angelina for the first to share her story about her summer vacation.
After reading this picture book, the book tells a powerful message as it touches on essential themes like self-esteem, inclusiveness, embracing our differences and similarities, positive friendships, and celebrating diversity, identity, and culture. For the most part, Woodson makes it a mission to remind us we are all different in our own way, making us feel like an outsider at times — whether it is our race, cultural differences, appearances, what we eat, our actions — but once we have the courage to share our personal stories and experiences to others, it gives them the opportunity to learn and appreciate our differences and accepting us for who we are.
Lastly, the picture book is beautifully illustrated by Rafael Lopez. The book was presented with the use of various mediums to reinforce Woodson's story. Rafael used many traditional mediums like watercolor, pencil, acrylics, and wood to create texture and uniqueness to the character's story. The illustrator also uses a lot of rich, bright, vibrant colors to capture the overall meaning and message of the story.

Went shopping today at a discount outlet and found books in the nonficton section spreading alt-right horseshit about the election being "stolen" and how "critical race theory is tearing the black community apart".
