Fun Things To Do in Medford Oregon
Tumblr media
Medford, Oregon is a fun place to visit. It has great food, beautiful scenery, and plenty to do! I'm going to tell you about some of my favorite places in Medford so that when you come to visit you can have an awesome time too.
Vodka tasting at Crater Lake
Tumblr media
Want to get a more sophisticated buzz? Some of the best vodkas in the country are made right here in Medford, Oregon. The vodka is distilled from potatoes and aged in barrels that were once used for bourbon or whiskey. A local family runs the distillery, and they produce their own spirits onsite. The business also has tasting rooms where you can sample any of their fine liquors—including gin, rum, and whiskey—to your heart’s content!
If you want to learn more about this process, check out one of these two cool events:
Vodka 101: A Tasting Class – $35 (2 hours)
Learn how vodka gets made by touring Crater Lake Distillery before taking part in an educational tasting session that will teach you how to identify different types of vodkas by taste alone (no glasses required). This class starts at 10 am every Saturday morning but spaces fill up quickly so be sure to book well ahead if you want to attend!
Go to the Medford Farmers Market.
Tumblr media
The Medford Farmers Market is a market where you can buy fresh produce, homemade food, and products, and even get your pet's food. The location of market is at the corner of Main Street and Riverside Drive. You can expect to find vegetables that are in season, as well as some out-of-season vegetables or fruits. There are also meat products sold here such as beef jerky, bison burgers, chicken breast strips, and pork chops. You can also purchase desserts like brownies or cookies from local bakeries like Big O's Cookies & Sweets (which has been featured on Food Network).
The farmers market is open every Saturday from 8 AM to 1 PM during spring through fall months (November - April), and closed during winter months (May - October). Admission into the market costs $0 for adults due to its location being part of a public park area; there will be booths selling tickets for rides/attractions nearby if interested in those activities instead!
Hike Table Rock
Tumblr media
If you like to hike, Table Rock is the place for you. This trail is short and sweet, but it’s also a great workout. The trail begins at the Crater Lake Lodge and climbs up several switchbacks before reaching Table Rock (a 1,200-foot elevation gain). Once at the top of this plateau-like rock, you’ll be rewarded with views of nearby Wizard Island, Mount Scott, and Mount Thielsen in addition to Crater Lake itself! If you get lucky with weather conditions or go during peak wildflower season (May), there are tons of wildflowers along the way that will make your hike even more magical.
Visit the Rogue Creamery.
Tumblr media
Located in a tiny town called Central Point, this artisanal cheese maker is well-known as a tourist attraction. In addition to making some of Oregon's best cheeses and ice creams, it has a tasting room and gift shop where you can sample its delicious products. There's also a restaurant that serves up fresh sandwiches and soups made with their cheese (and you thought sandwiches were just for lunch). If you're not into eating out then stop by for the picnic area where you can pack your own lunch or order one from their restaurant menu to enjoy in the park setting outside!
Look for Sasquatch at Collier State Park.
Tumblr media
If you're looking for something to do that's weird and wonderful, then look no further than Collier State Park. You can find Sasquatch here!
Sasquatch is a legendary creature, which supposedly lives in the forests of Oregon and Washington. It is said to eat berries and nuts from trees, but unlike Bigfoot, it doesn't like beer or pizza (or maybe they just don't get along). As with other mythical creatures such as dragons and fairies, there have not been any real sightings of Sasquatch—but that doesn't mean you can't try!
Collier State Park is part of the Coast Range mountains; it covers more than 3,000 acres near the city of Medford. It has plenty of hiking trails where you might be able to spot some furry beasties lurking around the bushes or hiding behind trees—check out their website for more information about camping at this park if you want an overnight stay!
Remodeling Services are an effective way

Back in 2023, Firestone Walker Brewing releases their latest edition of Parabola, barrel-aged imperial stout.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Press Release
Paso Robles, CA: Firestone Walker’s iconic Parabola imperial stout is back with a new vintage that was aged in a rare blend of spirits barrels from Blanton’s and W.L Weller distilleries. This release is also accompanied by the next edition of a small-batch spinoff called “Paraboloid,” which was aged in 20-year-old Elijah Craig bourbon barrels.
The 2023 vintage of Parabola is rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets in limited 12-ounce bottle and draft formats. Meanwhile, 12-ounce bottles of Paraboloid are available for a limited time at all Firestone Walker locations and online at FirestoneBeer.com.
Parabola is always a beast of a beer, with intense flavors of black cherry, dark chocolate, vanilla and roast coffee—yet each annual release also bears its own subtle imprint, gained from aging in a unique mix of barrels from one year to the next.
True to form, the 2023 edition was aged for a year in an equal combination of eight-year-old Blanton’s bourbon and 12-year-old W.L. Weller wheated whiskey barrels. The wheated whiskey barrels accentuated Parabola’s signature richness with fine notes of cereal grain, while the bourbon barrels imparted their classic notes of toasted coconut and cocoa nibs.
“These barrels are pretty rare, and we’ve never used them to this extent in Parabola,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “I’ve been a longtime fan of Blanton’s, and I’m a more recent fan of Weller, and together they add a flavorful new twist on the story of Parabola.”
Origin Story
The origins of Parabola date back to 2005, when it was created as a component for Firestone Walker’s first barrel-aged Anniversary Ale, which was called Ten. When this inaugural Anniversary Ale was released the following year, it became an immediate sensation and helped spark the coming surge in barrel-aged craft beers.
Along the way, Parabola gained a cult reputation of its own, finally meriting its own stand-alone release in 2010. Ever since, Parabola has returned each spring as a small-batch Firestone Walker staple. Today, Parabola maintains a perfect 100-point rating on Beer Advocate.
Paraboloid: Aged in 20-Year Elijah Craig Barrels
Parabola also achieves new heights in the limited small-batch spinoff known as Paraboloid.
The story of this beer began when it was aged in a special selection of premium 20-year-old Elijah Craig bourbon barrels. These barrels complemented Parabola’s flavors with mellow hints of oak, fudge and chocolate brownie.
“The rarity of these barrels speaks for itself, we were grateful to secure them,” Brynildson said. “They’re as old as the Parabola recipe itself. We’ve used Elijah Craig barrels in our barrel-aging program for a long time. Their barrels are super consistent and I’m a massive fan of their bourbons—but I’d never seen a 20-year-old Elijah Craig barrel until now.”
Additionally, the beer was aged for a full 18 months prior to blending and bottling, cultivating an ultra-smooth mouthfeel for this prodigiously flavorful stout.

Founded by brothers-in-law Adam Firestone and David Walker in 1996, Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a California beer company with three innovative brewing facilities. Firestone Walker’s main brewery in Paso Robles produces a diverse portfolio ranging from iconic pale ales to vintage barrel-aged beers. The Barrelworks facility in Buellton makes eccentric wild ales, while the Propagator pilot brewhouse in Venice specializes in R&D beers and limited local offerings. Firestone Walker is also the brewery behind 805, one of the nation’s fastest-growing beers. Firestone Walker was recently named “Best American Brewery of the Decade” by Paste Magazine.

#Repost @colvinology Barrel Aged Double Fudgy Brownie Stout, a 14.2% barrel aged imperial stout from Untitled Art (@untitledartbev) with milk sugar, cocoa nibs, and Belgian candi syrup, and the 1/100 Full Mechanics Barbados Lupus Rex . Pours a dark, Tootsie Roll brown with absolutely no head. The aroma is a potent mix of chocolate ice cream, brownie batter, bourbon, and wood chips. The sip is intensely chocolatey, combining flavors of milk, semi-sweet, and dark chocolate in cascades of increasing intensity. Right in the middle of this though, is a double shot of bourbon that stands out initially before blending in with the chocolate flavors. The finish is a mix of bourbon warmth and dark chocolate bitterness, with the chocolate ultimately winning out more and more as you go. This drinks like the 4th bourbon hot chocolate at an increasingly rowdy office Christmas party and I absolutely love it. If you like any beer even remotely like this, you owe it to yourself to try this one. It's an unapologetically boozy chocolate dream...it's also completely inappropriate for the 90 degree weather we've been having, but that's what air conditioning is for 😂. Sunday single barrel sipping with this bottle of Off Hours bourbon. Flavors of salted caramel brownies dominate this bottle with a bit of peanut and brown butter on the backend. Smoking an Alec Bradley Magic Toast while I while away the hours this fine Sunday afternoon. ..... I missed this one but yesterday marked the 50th Anniversary of the premiere of M*A*S*H on September 17, 1972 on CBS. The show has long been a part of my life with my parents fondly telling the story of me staying up to watch the show as a child and turning off the TV and going to bed when it was over. I remember the final episode airing and us taping it with our top loading, giant VHS deck. I think I still have the tape ina box somewhere. The show definitely helped form my humor and I still watch it to this day. It's also the show that I put on if I want to fall asleep, with the sounds of helicopters, jeeps, the brassy tones of "Suicide is Painless", and the wit of the 4077th playing through my screen. I've seen it so many times I know which version I'm watching (Hulu you need to get the full versions of the episodes up) missing jokes and scenes that don't show on certain formats. My wife and I often comment on how the show still holds up and is relevant to this day. So here's a toast to a show that has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. To the men and women of the 4077th and the production crew that brought them to life. In the immortal words of my favorite character Major Sydney Freeman, "Ladies and gentlemen take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice". .... "I'd like a dry martini, Mr. Quoc, a very dry martini. A very dry, arrid, barren, desiccated, veritable dustbowel of a martini. I want a martini that could be declared a disaster area. Mix me just such a martini." -- Hawkeye ..... #mash #cigar #CigarLover #CigarAfficionado #cigarphoto #cigarsnob #cigarlife #cigarsmoke #alecandbradleycigars #SailorsAndSticks #cigarsandwhisky #TapThatAsh #whiskey #bourbon #singlebarrel #singlebarrelsunday #whiskeylife #WhiskeyLover #whiskeyphoto #WhiskeyNeat #WhiskeyAfficionado #whiskeygram #quote #quotestagram (at Coastal San Pedro) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ciq4taDLeNo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Routines:
I can become very despondent when I get a little hangry. Luckily there was lunch.
For the last 6 years on this day, I’ve been blessed with having a few people at the Office think about me. I never asked, or never had to answer someone’s question. It just always showed up in the fridge, of was given to me on their way out. For 6 years now I’ve been given a piece of cake or brownie and a glass of bourbon, by a few different Office Managers. For those 6 years, I’ve had said gifts at my desk for my birthday dinner or snack, etc.
Today I was quietly thinking back to myself about all those times, when she asked what did I want, if she were to get me something. That’s just it, I don’t want to ask - just make an effort and surprise me. It took all my resolve not to answer in a sarcastic tone. What do I want? I want a piece of cake, a tall glass of barrel proof 9 year old bourbon, and a desk to eat it at....by myself, after working a 12 hour day.
I want my routine back.

One Piece Birthdays: Honorable Mentions
One Piece has hundreds of characters, and over the past year I’ve celebrated the birthdays of only about a few hundred or so of them. So I’d like to take the time to mention every One Piece character without a birthday. Some don’t have birthdays because they’ve debuted too recently, some have no birthdays because they have been forgotten. Some have no birthdays because we haven’t gotten to that yet, even though they’ve existed for a long time and we remember them. To start off with, I will mention every character that exists within the canon that have names. Some you’ll remember. Some you won’t recognize, but if I showed you a picture of them you’d be like “Oh yeah that guy”. And then some of them you won’t have any recollection of, and I can’t blame you for it. Today, we will honor your memories, and hope that one day, Eiichiro Oda gives you a birthday.

I used the names that they are given on the wiki, as opposed to their Official English names, if they even have one. I did this so that you can simply search their names on the One Piece Wiki and learn about them, if any interest you. However, a couple of them are so obscure that they don’t even have their own pages, in which case you will only be able to fine them here.
Next we will honor all non-canon characters. These characters appeared in filler, movies, specials, OVAs, one-shots, video games, or any other material that was officially made but not part of the manga. These characters are gaurunteed to never get a birthday, and that is a curse they bear. Now some non-canon characters, such as Gion and Tokikake, debut in non-canon and then later appear in canon, making them canon characters, and thus giving them a chance to have a birthday. However, this is such a rare case, that I wouldn’t count on it, especially for non-canon characters that debuted years ago.

Lastly, I want to honor all characters, canon and non-canon, with no names. The majority of these characters are just extras that only appeared in one panel or shot. But there’s a couple that are actually memorable, such as that one guy that was in Spandine’s group, or the masked CP-0 members. Some of these people can actually get names eventually. For example, Don Quixote Mjosgard was a nameless character for the longest time, until in the Reverie he became important and was given a name. I cannot list these nameless characters, as they have no names, but I do still want to honor them, and hope that one day they will be given names and have birthdays.

Beer One of my Twelve Beers of Christmas 2021 • Trillium German Chocolate Cake Doughnut - "Barrel-Aged German Chocolate Cake Doughnut is a 15.0% Imperial Stout that pours a thick, pitch black with an espresso-colored foam cap. The aroma is rich and layered, offering confectionery notes of creamy chocolate, thick vanilla frosting, and toasted coconut upfront. As the glass warms, the beer’s complexity is unveiled, with oak, sweet bourbon, and brownie batter contributing secondary tones. The body is viscous, providing structure for the huge flavor profile, moderate alcohol warmth, and welcomed sweetness." • Extremely rich and decadent, definitely dessert. • @trilliumbrewing @untappd • 🇩🇪🥥🍩🍻 • #BBQLou #craftbeer #trilliumbrewing #TwelveBeersOfChristmas #germanchocolatecakedoughnut #germanchocolatecake (at Oak Ridge House of Blues) https://www.instagram.com/p/CX7aNY4Oslf/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society unveils fiesta of flavour for Islay and Speyside festivals
SMWS takes members on flavour journey with a total of 10 exclusive bottles to celebrate both the Spirit of Speyside and Feis Ile festivals.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is making May a month to savour for its members with the release of 10 exclusive bottles to celebrate both the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival (3–7 May) and Feis Ile, The Islay Festival of Music and Malt (25 May–2 June).
The Society will also be holding a series of events at both festivals, as well as Speyside and Islay-themed tastings at its Members’ Rooms and partner bars throughout the UK and Europe.
Both regions have their superfans and this year the Society is urging members to make their voices heard, by joining the online debate between Speyside supporter the Craigellachie Crusader and peat freak the Islay Avenger at https://goo.gl/JgLRDe
The celebratory festival bottlings include:
Speyside
§  9.143: Graceful gravitas (21-years-old) – UK and EU bottling
§  107.13: Andalusian gazpacho (9-years-old) – UK and EU bottling
Islay
§  3.307: A journey into joy (20-years-old) – UK and EU bottling
§  3.308: A maritime meander (13-years-old)
§  10.141: Indulgence by the sea (12-years-old) – UK and EU bottling
§  10.146: Sweet smoky succulent sensation (9-years-old) – UK and EU bottling
§  29.241: A perfect moment (20-years-old) – UK and EU bottling
§  29.244: Weaving wondrous dreams (8-years-old) – available on Islay only
§  53.248: Slapped by Poseidon’s glove (11-years-old)
§  53.252: Smoky incarnations (11-years-old)
Helen Stewart, senior brand manager for the Society, said: “The Speyside and Islay Whisky Festivals are key dates in the whisky calendar, with May seeing the annual pilgrimage to the renowned whisky festivals. This year we have bottled more casks than ever before to give members all over the world even more opportunity to purchase one.”
For those fortunate enough to be travelling to the Islay Festival of Music and Malt, the SMWS will be releasing 29.244: Weaving wondrous dreams. To reward members who have made the journey to attend the Islay festival, this limited edition will only be available for existing and new members to purchase on the island.
The bottling is an 8-year-old peated whisky from a refill ex-bourbon barrel. The palate is described as intense – with an earthy sweetness (chocolate brownies, flying saucers, aniseed, liquorice root) and smoke-derived flavours of tar, iodine and coal. The SMWS Tasting Panel said, “the long-lasting medicinal smoke will waft and weave into wondrous dreams”.
With only 222 bottles available to members, this will be a very limited edition and sought-after bottle.
Like all Society bottlings, the distillery name is kept a secret on all the bottles.
The six casks destined for the UK and EU will be available (while stocks last) online at https://goo.gl/c38urY and at the Society’s venues and partner bars (by the dram only) from Friday 4 May 2018.
Speyside events
SMWS will be hosting tailored tasting events featuring special celebratory bottlings at the Speyside Festival with Society ambassador Hans Offringa. These will be held in SMWS official partner bar, The Quaich at The Craigellachie Hotel on Friday, 4 May. (http://www.spiritofspeyside.com/events)
Islay Whisky Festival
On Islay, the SMWS will be running a series of tastings and masterclasses throughout the festival, starting with an Open Day on Friday, 25 May on the lawns at Islay House, home to Society partner bar, The Peat Cutter Inn. Tastings and events will be hosted by master brand ambassador John McCheyne.
SMWS Venues: Members’ Rooms & Partner Bars
If you can’t make it to the festivals, then throughout May, the SMWS will be running Speyside & Islay-inspired offers and menus with matched whiskies in its Members’ Rooms and partner bars. There will also be special Islay and Speyside festival flights to sample and enjoy. Tastings will focus on an Islay versus Speyside theme, where the two regions will be presented against each other. In the Kaleidoscope Whisky Bar in Edinburgh, Festival themed cocktails will be created from Friday 4 May.

Mischief awaits you at Crossbuck Brewing, with the release of Widdiefu barrel-aged Strong Scotch Ale.
Tumblr media
Etched in Scottish mythology, the widdifow is described as a prankster or someone who deserved to be hung for their mischievous deeds. It’s also the name chosen by Crossbuck Brewing’s Nate Sherrod, for their soon-to-be released Widdiefu Strong Scotch Ale, aged in bourbon barrels.
Resting for 9-months in Maker’s Mark and Maker’s Mark Select El Gaucho blend barrels, has been described as beer with notes of vanilla, caramel, dried fruit flavors and toffee notes.
Brewed in April of last year (2019), Widdiefu could also be called a “Wee Heavy” given the malty, rich aromas imparted from a longer than normal boil in the brewery kettle. After a few weeks, aging away in a stainless steel cage, they transferred this Strong Scotch Ale early May into previous-use Maker’s Mark bourbon barrels. Recalling the barrels, Sherrod recalls,
“We used two Makers Mark barrels but one was the Private Select from El Gaucho.  They both contributed nice bourbon complexities, but the Private Select had a bit more intensity in vanilla and caramel flavors.”
At 8% ABV (alcohol by volume) and 23 IBU, Widdiefu is available for your judgement and per the brewery, should pair with a ribeye steak, braised beef, or other hearty and savory dishes. Or if you prefer, pair with a rich chocolate cake or brownie. But don’t wait long, as they released only 93 gallons.
Crossbuck Brewing Company is located at 410 N 2nd Avenue in Walla Walla, Washington. For more information including hours, menus, and current events, visit http://bit.ly/2SlM9Xh.

#Repost @colvinology Barrel Aged Hazelnut Imperial Stout from Untitled Art (@untitledartbev) and Mikerphone (@mikerphonebrewing), the Master Grade Gundam 3.0, and the Master Grade Gundam Mk V . WOW. The nose here is absolutely BURSTING with the aroma roasted hazelnut. There's also a fair amount of chocolate and bourbon here, as well as a bit of coffee, but man, this goes heavy on the hazelnut. The sip elicits another WOW from me. I actually hadn't checked the ABV on this until I took a sip, and I have to say, this definitely drinks like a 13% stout. The flavor is more balanced than the nose, with strong hits of dark chocolate, black coffee, and strong bourbon joining that total facepunch of hazelnut. The flavor of Nutella hits you first, before it's almost completely drowned out by a smooth shot of bourbon. As that fades, dark chocolate and black coffee bitterness arrive, as well as the tail end of the hazelnut flavor. As it warms, the bourbon becomes less harsh in the middle, and the whole thing settles into a sort of boozy hazelnut brownie flavor. This beer is what Stout Season is all about: when the weather gets cold, you need something that warms you up, like 3 shots of bourbon, a mug of hot cocoa, and a half jar of Nutella...and if you can get that all at once? Even better. The bourbon scouts at Cypress Craft Beer and Liquor and the Orange County Bourbon Society searched all the nooks and crannies at the Old Scout rickhouse as part of their single barrel hunter merit badge requirements and found a winner. This 6 year old 112.4 proof find brings home flavor of brownies, caramel, sea salt, and some wood. Perfect to sip by the fire with some smores and a good cigar. Speaking of which, I paired the bottle with a Tatuaje Mil Dias Magicos cigar. .... "If alcohol is queen, then tobacco is her consort. 10 Bourbon-Spiked Dessert Recipes and What to Drink With Them
Fall is here, and with it comes some of our favorite things: Cozy sweaters, crunchy leaves, and, of course, the return of some beloved cool-weather flavors. And while many people associate fall with pumpkin, apple, and gingerbread, we at VinePair are excited to indulge in another seasonal staple: Bourbon.
But why not have it all? From seasonal whiskeys, to sweet and spiced cocktails, there are endless ways to sip bourbon during the cooler months. This year, however, we’re getting creative — combining the spirit with the fall desserts we adore, all in one go. After all, who doesn’t love multitasking?
These tasty recipes combine our two favorite fall pastimes: The sweet pursuit of decadent desserts and the heat and comfort of cooking with bourbon. From apple bourbon bundt cake, to banana bourbon layer cake, these booze-soaked delicacies prove that bourbon is just as nice to eat as it is to drink.
Browned Butter & Bourbon Blondies (Saving Room for Dessert)
Pair with: Wheated bourbon, such as Larceny Small Batch
For a dessert straight out of a bourbon lover’s dream, try these browned butter and bourbon blondies. These mess-free squares travel well and are perfect for sharing — or saving. To spice up the dessert, try sipping wheated bourbon alongside these blondies. With its lighter flavor profile, this slightly sweet spirit is a perfect match for these luscious squares.
Easiest Caramel Apple Clafoutis (Bon Appetit)
Pair with: Vin Santo, such as 2008 Felsina Vin Santo
This one-skillet apple dessert is ideal for baking newbies, requiring minimal prep and cleanup compared to traditional pie. Apples and bourbon are this dessert’s secret weapons, adding a level of spice and acidity to this otherwise sweet dish. Try pairing this dish with an equally fruit-forward dessert wine, such as Vin Santo. This balanced Italian dessert wine adds to the apple-pie sweetness without overpowering it.
Bourbon-Cream Cheese Brownies (My Recipes)
Pair with: Flanders red ale, such as Rodenbach Classic
Bourbon-infused cream cheese is sandwiched between layers of brownie batter in this decadent treat. The rich chocolate and cheese pair beautifully with a tart Flanders red ale such as Rodenbach. The sour and sweet character of this Flemish beer refreshes the palate while adding oaky, fruity flavors.
Maple-Bourbon Banana Pudding Cake (Food and Wine)
Pair with: Hefeweizen, such as Wallenpaupack Brewing Company Hawley Hefeweizen
This low-effort cake is rich and syrupy and adds a couple of drams of bourbon for its characteristic sweet, warm vanilla notes. As the cake bakes, a bourbon and maple syrup sauce forms on the bottom, making for a dessert that’s half cake, half pudding, and all delicious. To ease up on the viscous nature of this dish, pair a slice of cake with a tall glass of hefeweizen, which lifts and enhances the cake’s banana flavors.
Banana Bourbon Layer Cake (Martha Stewart)
Pair with: Port wine, such as Zuccardi Malamado Malbec Port
This boozy cake is so tasty, it’s bananas. In a rich take on a New Orleans staple, the Bananas Foster, bourbon, banana, and butter are flambéed on top of a layer cake. The fiery excitement results in a moist, syrupy dessert that’s sure to impress your guests. Port wine’s spicy undertones even out the sweetness of this rich dessert.
Bourbon Apple Crisp Shooters with Bourbon Cream (Betty Crocker)
Pair with: Apple brandy, such as Laird’s Single Barrel
Take a shot and eat it, too, with this sippable version of an apple crisp. As both dessert and after-dinner cocktail, it’s an ideal date-night treat or weekend reward, and it requires only 15 minutes of preparation. Sipping this shooter alongside a small glass of apple brandy (shot glass optional) both cleanses the palate between sips and stretches out the experience of the apple crisp.
Chocolate Fudge Pecan Pie Tart (How Sweet Eats)
Pair with: Brown ale, such as Anderson Valley Black Rice Ale
This chocolatey pecan pie may put the traditional version to shame. Bourbon is combined with chocolate, pecans, and a whole lot of butter to make this grownup take on a Thanksgiving favorite. Brown ale’s lightly chocolatey, roasty, and nutty flavors meld with those in the chocolate fudge, while its carbonation lifts the fudge flavors so you can appreciate the next bite.
Gluten-Free Bourbon Caramel Samoas (Minimalist Baker)
Pair with: Gluten-free IPA, such as Glutenberg IPA
Delight your adult and childhood taste buds with this gluten-free, dairy-free take on the Samoa. Unlike the Girl Scout cookie, this so-called “healthier” version is topped with bourbon caramel sauce — made from only four ingredients. (Bourbon, unless made with 100 percent corn, is made using gluten-containing ingredients such as malted barley and wheat. However, distillation removes gluten proteins from the spirit.) To complete your gluten-free dessert experience, pair these cookies with a gluten-free IPA. The citrusy aromas and flavors from the hops are a great complement to the caramel sweetness.
Pumpkin Bread With Brown Butter and Bourbon (New York Times Cooking)
Pair with: Moscato d’Asti, such as 2018 Marenco Strev Moscato d’Asti
If it wasn’t already clear, pumpkin is fall’s BFF. From pumpkin spiced lattes, to pumpkin beers, the flavor has taken the culinary world by storm. This take on classic pumpkin bread adds bourbon to the mix for an extra hearty and spicy taste. Sweet, fruity Moscato d’Asti offers a satisfying contrast to this savory dessert.
Bourbon Peach Cobbler (Food Network)
Pair with: High-rye bourbon, such as Old Grand-Dad Bonded
This fruitful cobbler has peach, cinnamon, and bourbon flavors. It’s also relatively easy to make — taking about an hour to prepare, bake, and devour. High-rye bourbon is a great match for this recipe, as its subtly spicy bite balances out the sweet and fruity flavors of this dessert.

The Weenies Are In!
vimeo
Halloween starts early at the lab, and we’re excited to present the Halloween 2017 update! It’s here! The cornerstone of this year's collection is a spirited tribute to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart," featuring numerous heart-stopping illustrations by Drew Rausch (as previewed above).
But wait! There are more collections within the Collection:  Pile of Leaves, Pumpkin Spice Whatever (It will never die!), Samhainophobia (be very afraid), and, of course, the season’s stirring Single Notes.
The 2017 Weenies, all limited editions, are all ready and waiting for you online. If you’d like to catch a whiff of the whole set—and a whole lot more—come smell us at New York Comic Con, October 5 through 8. Or send your fairy to Comic Con on a Weenie-gathering mission.
NOW, HERE’S EVERYTHING!
Tumblr media
ALL SOULS
A day of remembrance and intercession. Without the prayers and sacrifices of their families and loved ones, the faithful departed may not be cleansed of their venal sins, and thereby cannot attain beatific vision. On November 2nd, prayers are sung and offerings are made to aid lost souls in transcending purgatory. An incense blend that invokes the higher qualities of mercy and compassion, mingled with the soft, sugared currant scent of offertory soul cakes.
THE APPARITION
When by thy scorne, O murdresse, I am dead,And that thou thinkst thee freeFrom all solicitation from mee,Then shall my ghost come to thy bed,And thee, fain'd vestall, in worse armes shall see; Then thy sicke taper will begin to winke,And he,whose thou art then, being tyr'd before,Will, if thou stirre, or pinch to wake him, thinkeThou call'st for more,And in false sleepe will from thee shrinke,And then poore Aspen wretch, neglected thouBath'd in a cold quicksilver swear wilt lyeA veryer ghost than I;What I will say, I will not tell thee now,Lest that preserve thee; and since my love is spent,I'had rather thou shouldst painfully repent,Than by my threatenings rest still innocent.
Quicksilver-cold and heartless: white sandalwood, immortelle, zdravetz, and oudh.
APPLE BUTTER RUM
Spiced rum with cinnamon, apple butter, nutmeg, and thick vanilla cream.
CARDAMOM CREAM PUMPKIN CAKE
Thick lumps of pumpkin cake with cardamom-cream frosting and a dusting of cinnamon.
CHOCOLATE BLOOD
A sideways ode to Hitchcock’s Psycho, by way of Bosco Chocolate Syrup.
CINNAMON CHAI CUPCAKE
A cozy accompaniment on chilly autumn nights.
DAY OF THE SKULLS
In Bolivia, many people hold to the tradition of keeping the skulls of their ancestors with them in their homes, caring for their remains. It is believed that each person has seven souls, and one of those souls stays with the skull after death, enabling a spirit to grant protection and prophetic dreams to their descendants, and to bless their families with good health and prosperity.
The Bolivian Fiesta de las Natitas, or Dia de los Natitas, is a day of honor for these ancestors. Their skulls are dressed with fragrant blossoms, and offerings of cocoa leaves, alcohol, and cigarettes are made.
White sandalwood, beeswax, and frankincense crowned by hydrangea, rose, and kantuta blossoms, dressed with tobacco, cocoa leaves and flowers from the sacred Cactus of the Four Winds.
DIRGE
We do lie beneath the grass In the moonlight, in the shade  Of the yew-tree. They that pass Hear us not. We are afraid   They would envy our delight,   In our graves by glow-worm night. Come follow us, and smile as we; We sail to the rock in the ancient waves, Where the snow falls by thousands into the sea, And the drown’d and the shipwreck’d have happy graves.- Thomas Lovell Beddoes
Yew berries and cypress boughs, ropes of kelp and sea spray.
FEEDING THE DEAD
A barrel of beer, a pyramid of cakes, and three sticks of incense.
HALLOW-E’EN, 1914
"Why do you wait at your door, woman,Alone in the night?”“I am waiting for one who will come, stranger,To show him a light. He will see me afar on the roadAnd be glad at the sight.” “Have you no fear in your heart, woman,To stand there alone? There is comfort for you and kindly contentBeside the hearthstone.”But she answered, “No rest can I haveTill I welcome my own.”“Is it far he must travel to-night,This man of your heart?”“Strange lands that I know not and pitiless seasHave kept us apart,And he travels this night to his homeWithout guide, without chart.” “And has he companions to cheer him?”“Aye, many,” she said.“The candles are lighted, the hearthstones are swept,The fires glow red.We shall welcome them out of the night—Our home-coming dead.”- Winifred M. Letts
A welcome for the home-coming dead: an incense of dried ivy and maple leaf with honeyed fig, black cypress, and grave dirt.
HAUNTED SEAS
A gleaming glassy ocean  Under a sky of grey;A tide that dreams of motion,  Or moves, as the dead may;A bird that dips and wavers  Over lone waters round,Then with a cry that quavers  Is gone—a spectral sound. The brown sad sea-weed drifting  Far from the land, and lost; The faint warm fog unlifting,  The derelict long tossed,But now at rest—though haunted  By the death-scenting shark,Whose prey no more undaunted  Slips from it, spent and stark.
- Cale Young Rice
Seaspray and flecks of foam welling with opoponax and labdanum’s sepulchral moans.
IN A WHISPERING GALLERY
That whisper takes the voiceOf a Spirit, speaking to me,Close, but invisible,And throws me under a spellAt the kindling vision it brings; And for a moment I rejoice,And believe in transcendent thingsThat would make of this muddy earthA spot for the splendid birthOf everlasting lives,Whereto no night arrives; And this gaunt gray galleryA tabernacle of worthOn this drab-aired afternoon,When you can barely seeAcross its hazed lacuneIf opposite aught there beOf fleshed humanityWherewith I may commune;Or if the voice so nearBe a soul’s voice floating here.- Thomas Hardy
Marbled white iris, white tobacco flower, Italian bergamot, white leather, and Mysore sandalwood.
LA CALAVERA CATRINA
The Lady of the Graveyard! Autumn leaves, wild roses, bourbon vanilla, dry chamomile, and a bouquet of bright chrysanthemums and Mexican marigolds.
OCTOBER
Ay, thou art welcome, heaven's delicious breath!
When woods begin to wear the crimson leaf,
And suns grow meek, and the meek suns grow brief
And the year smiles as it draws near its death.
Wind of the sunny south! oh, still delay
In the gay woods and in the golden air,
Like to a good old age released from care,
Journeying, in long serenity, away.
In such a bright, late quiet, would that I
Might wear out life like thee, 'mid bowers and brooks
And dearer yet, the sunshine of kind looks,
And music of kind voices ever nigh;
And when my last sand twinkled in the glass,
Pass silently from men, as thou dost pass.
Dry, cold autumn wind. A rustle of red leaves, a touch of smoke and sap in the air.

PUMPKIN BROWNIES

PUMPKIN CHYPRE
A gleaming auburn chypre shot through with streaks of pumpkin.
PUMPKIN SUGAR 2017
Crystallized glittering shards of lightly spiced pumpkin sugar.
SAMHAIN 2017
Truly the scent of autumn itself -- damp woods, fir needle, and black patchouli with the gentlest touches of warm pumpkin, clove, nutmeg, allspice, sweet red apple and mullein.
SEPTEMBER MIDNIGHT 2017
Lyric night of the lingering Indian Summer,
Shadowy fields that are scentless but full of singing,
Never a bird, but the passionless chant of insects,
Ceaseless, insistent.
The grasshopper's horn, and far-off, high in the maples,
The wheel of a locust leisurely grinding the silence
Under a moon waning and worn, broken,
Tired with summer.
Let me remember you, voices of little insects,
Weeds in the moonlight, fields that are tangled with asters,
Let me remember, soon will the winter be on us,
Snow-hushed and heavy.
Over my soul murmur your mute benediction,
While I gaze, O fields that rest after harvest,
As those who part look long in the eyes they lean to,
Lest they forget them.
- Sara Teasdale
A myrrh-darkened amber chypre sweetened by newly-ripened black pomegranate.
SUGAR SKULL 2017
Vibrant with the joy and sweetness of life in death! A blend of five sugars, lightly dusted with candied fruits.
THE WITCH BRIDE 2017
A fair witch crept to a young man's side,
And he kiss'd her and took her for his bride.
But a Shape came in at the dead of night,
And fill'd the room with snowy light.
And he saw how in his arms there lay
A thing more frightful than mouth may say.
And he rose in haste, and follow'd the Shape
Till morning crown'd an eastern cape.
And he girded himself, and follow'd still
When sunset sainted the western hill.
But, mocking and thwarting, clung to his side,
Weary day!-the foul Witch-Bride.
(Aw, c'mon, Allingham. Foul is a pretty strong choice of words, dontcha think?)
Pale and lovely, with eyes belladonna-wide: hemlock blossoms and ghostly nightshade veiled by wisteria, white frankincense, black amber, and narcissus resin.

++ THE TELL-TALE HEART
Story by Edgar Allan Poe, art by Drew Rausch, scents by Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab.
I HEARD MANY THINGS IN HELL
The disease had sharpened my senses -- not destroyed -- not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad? Hearken! and observe how healthily -- how calmly I can tell you the whole story.
Hearken and observe: black iris, French lavender, Roman chamomile, and frankincense.
THE EYE OF A VULTURE
It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night. Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture -- a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees -- very gradually -- I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.
Milky white fluid obfuscating a pale, lilac-blue iris.
YOU FANCY ME MAD
Now this is the point. You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me. You should have seen how wisely I proceeded -- with what caution -- with what foresight -- with what dissimulation I went to work! I was never kinder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed him.
Percolating with derangement: flashing spikes of orange blossom, neroli, lemon, and bitter clove in a bubbling mass of opoponax, patchouli, and thick, black vetiver.
GROAN OF MORTAL TERROR
Presently I heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of mortal terror. It was not a groan of pain or of grief -- oh, no! -- it was the low stifled sound that arises from the bottom of the soul when overcharged with awe. I knew the sound well. Many a night, just at midnight, when all the world slept, it has welled up from my own bosom, deepening, with its dreadful echo, the terrors that distracted me. I say I knew it well.
Opaque grey amber and opoponax swelling up like thick smoke, pressed under the weight of baleful tobacco.
THE MOURNFUL INFLUENCE OF THE UNPERCEIVED SHADOW
I knew what the old man felt, and pitied him, although I chuckled at heart. I knew that he had been lying awake ever since the first slight noise, when he had turned in the bed. His fears had been ever since growing upon him. He had been trying to fancy them causeless, but could not. He had been saying to himself -- "It is nothing but the wind in the chimney -- it is only a mouse crossing the floor," or "It is merely a cricket which has made a single chirp." Yes, he had been trying to comfort himself with these suppositions: but he had found all in vain. All in vain; because Death, in approaching him had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim. And it was the mournful influence of the unperceived shadow that caused him to feel -- although he neither saw nor heard -- to feel the presence of my head within the room.
Unutterable dread: thick black patchouli, shadow musk, myrrh, and threads of hot saffron mired in sweet, viscous labdanum.
And now at the dead hour of the night, amid the dreadful silence of that old house, so strange a noise as this excited me to uncontrollable terror.
THE DEAD HOUR OF THE NIGHT
Mist-shrouded pine and moonflower creeping over flaccid opium poppies.
THE DREADFUL SILENCE OF THAT OLD HOUSE
Polished mahogany blanketed by myrrh.
STEALTHILY, STEALTHILY
When I had waited a long time, very patiently, without hearing him lie down, I resolved to open a little -- a very, very little crevice in the lantern. So I opened it -- you cannot imagine how stealthily, stealthily -- until, at length a simple dim ray, like the thread of the spider, shot from out the crevice and fell full upon the vulture eye.
It was open -- wide, wide open -- and I grew furious as I gazed upon it. I saw it with perfect distinctness -- all a dull blue, with a hideous veil over it that chilled the very marrow in my bones; but I could see nothing else of the old man's face or person: for I had directed the ray as if by instinct, precisely upon the damned spot.
A dim ray upon the vulture eye: smoked violets and bulbous orris, threads of crumbling lavender, and wet iris butter.
OVER-ACUTENESS OF THE SENSE
And have I not told you that what you mistake for madness is but over-acuteness of the sense? -- now, I say, there came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. I knew that sound well, too. It was the beating of the old man's heart. It increased my fury, as the beating of a drum stimulates the soldier into courage.
Hyper-aware, swirling with delusions: orange blossom, lemon balm, and clove.
THE HELLISH TATTOO OF THE HEART
But even yet I refrained and kept still. I scarcely breathed. I held the lantern motionless. I tried how steadily I could maintain the ray upon the eve. Meantime the hellish tattoo of the heart increased. It grew quicker and quicker, and louder and louder every instant. The old man's terror must have been extreme! It grew louder, I say, louder every moment! -- do you mark me well I have told you that I am nervous: so I am.
Blood musk and pulsating black pepper, a throb of bitter almond, and cracked pimento.
SUSPICION OF FOUL PLAY
If still you think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body. The night waned, and I worked hastily, but in silence. First of all I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and the arms and the legs.
I then took up three planks from the flooring of the chamber, and deposited all between the scantlings. I then replaced the boards so cleverly, so cunningly, that no human eye -- not even his -- could have detected any thing wrong. There was nothing to wash out -- no stain of any kind -- no blood-spot whatever. I had been too wary for that. A tub had caught all -- ha! ha!
When I had made an end of these labors, it was four o'clock -- still dark as midnight. As the bell sounded the hour, there came a knocking at the street door. I went down to open it with a light heart, -- for what had I now to fear? There entered three men, who introduced themselves, with perfect suavity, as officers of the police. A shriek had been heard by a neighbour during the night; suspicion of foul play had been aroused; information had been lodged at the police office, and they (the officers) had been deputed to search the premises.
Clean wood floors, a clean tub, clean, clean, clean, with no stain of any kind, no blood-spot whatsoever.
THE WILD AUDACITY OF MY PERFECT TRIUMPH
I smiled, -- for what had I to fear? I bade the gentlemen welcome. The shriek, I said, was my own in a dream. The old man, I mentioned, was absent in the country. I took my visitors all over the house. I bade them search -- search well. I led them, at length, to his chamber. I showed them his treasures, secure, undisturbed. In the enthusiasm of my confidence, I brought chairs into the room, and desired them here to rest from their fatigues, while I myself, in the wild audacity of my perfect triumph, placed my own seat upon the very spot beneath which reposed the corpse of the victim.
A jubilant and deranged lime absinthe.
SINGULARLY AT EASE
The officers were satisfied. My manner had convinced them. I was singularly at ease. They sat, and while I answered cheerily, they chatted of familiar things. But, ere long, I felt myself getting pale and wished them gone. My head ached, and I fancied a ringing in my ears: but still they sat and still chatted.
Rum cakes and black tea, blueberry scones and biscuits.
VIOLENT GESTICULATIONS
No doubt I now grew very pale; -- but I talked more fluently, and with a heightened voice. Yet the sound increased -- and what could I do? It was a low, dull, quick sound -- much such a sound as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. I gasped for breath --and yet the officers heard it not. I talked more quickly -- more vehemently; but the noise steadily increased. I arose and argued about trifles, in a high key and with violent gesticulations; but the noise steadily increased. Why would they not be gone?
An erratic pomegranate mint, high-pitched and flailing with eucalyptus, above a throbbing core of black musk.

- Barrel Bourbon Batch 23 Barrell Bourbon Batch 023 is a blend of 10, 12 and 15-year-old barrels. We focused on a balance of richness and depth from the older barrels. The blend mingled for a couple of months to heighten the lushness and complexity. Finally, we methodically layered in 15-year-old barrels to bring out notes of tropical fruit and angelica spice. The result is an evolving bourbon with layers of flavor. Nose: Opens sweetly, on buttered pancakes with maple syrup and cinnamon donuts. Gradually the aroma shifts to exotic, earthy notes of forest floor, cracked walnut, leather, red miso, and incense. Fruits feel ancillary, but kiwi, white currant, mulled cider and raspberry pastille all make an appearance. The rye spice is pronounced, lending bay leaf, angelica and chocolate mint. Palate: Gently sweet with chewy tannin, the evolution on the palate mirrors the nose. Honey, coffee cake and a touch of brownie taking the lead. Dry rose follows, on walnut shell, fallen leaves and portobello mushroom; reminiscent of an old Oloroso sherry. There’s a juicy brightness that makes notes of honeydew melon, grenadine and orange zest come alive. Finish: Cinnamon donut accompanied by nocino, black licorice and tar. As it fades, it softens to leather, orange peel and apple blossom. Beautiful bourbon !! (at Elite Wine & Spirits) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_NhMupJrXw/?igshid=1sxjtvfng0y35
