The Inverted Thinking IQ Matrix explores an alternate way to think about your life, problems, and circumstances. Instead of thinking about what can be done, inverted thinking challenges you to consider what can’t be done. Instead of thinking about how to succeed, you reflect on how you could potentially fail and the mistakes you could make. Instead of thinking about what it takes to achieve a goal, you mull over worst-case scenarios that will likely hinder your progress.

Inversion isn’t about being negative; it’s instead about foreseeing the possible negative scenarios that could eventuate. Thinking in this way provides you with unique insights into your situation that can help you plan and generate answers to overcome the potential pitfalls of your decisions.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with subscribing to more traditional norms, such as that of having a nuclear family. I wouldn’t dare judge anyone for choosing to live that narrative. But just because you may have grown up with more traditional norms doesn’t mean your views or values are superior to others who have different conceptions of what a “family” is. I grew up in a nuclear household but that didn’t automatically equate to bliss or what some societies may deem as “righteous”. I grew up with the religious notion that the man should be the “head of the household”. Yet, I also saw my mother, a strong and religious Christian woman, succumb to the ideologies that she should be yielding or enduring, despite the personal and painful hardships she was experiencing in her marriage. She sacrificed her own personal health and well being in order to keep her family intact because she was taught that divorce was sinful in the eyes of God. That being said, if we continue to see the world from such a narrow lens, wherein there should be only one image of what a family should look like, we may be doing more harm than good by imposing our values onto others. Who’s to say that having both a mother and a father is better than having two women as parental figures? Who’s to say that single-parent families or same-sex parents aren’t capable of raising smart and capable members of society? What type of message are we sending to our children if we continue to promote the idea that a nuclear family is the only type of family that should exist? When my mother made the painful decision to separate from her husband, she often worked 12- hour shifts as a nurse, sometimes 5 to 6 days out of the week and also juggled the responsibilities of motherhood. She was the true example of a matriarch. This is the narrative I grew up with. She taught me that I don’t need a man to complete me. I complete me. My family is not perfect by any means, so why should I judge someone who doesn’t fit the stereotypical image of a nuclear family? That is not my place, and it shouldn’t be yours either.
